We propose an experimentally feasible scheme to generate a superposition of travelling field coherent states using an extremely small Kerr effect and an ancilla which could be a single photon or two entangled twin photons. The scheme contains ingredients which are all within the current state of the art and is robust against the main sources of errors which can be identified in our setups.

A novel method for controlling wave energy converters using active bipolar damping is described and compared with current control methods. The performance of active bipolar damping is modelled numerically for two distinct types of wave energy converter and it is found that in both cases the power capture can be significantly increased relative to optimal linear damping. It is shown that this is because active bipolar damping has the potential for providing a quasi-spring or quasi-inertia, which improves the wave energy converter's tuning and amplitude of motion, resulting in the increase in power capture observed. The practical implementation of active bipolar damping is also discussed. It is noted that active bipolar damping does not require a reactive energy store and thereby reduces the cost and eliminates losses due to the cycling of reactive energy. It is also noted that active bipolar damping could be implemented using a single constant pressure double-acting hydraulic cylinder and so potentially represents a simple, efficient, robust and economic solution to the control of wave energy converters.

Changes in domain wall mobility, caused by the presence of antinotches in single crystal BaTiO3 nanowires, have been investigated. While antinotches appeared to cause a slight broadening in the distribution of switching events, observed as a function of applied electric field (inferred from capacitance-voltage measurements), the effect was often subtle. Greater clarity of information was obtained from Rayleigh analysis of the capacitance variation with ac field amplitude. Here the magnitude of the domain wall mobility parameter (R) associated with irreversible wall movements was found to be reduced by the presence of antinotches - an effect which became more noticeable on heating toward the Curie temperature. The reduction in this domain wall mobility was contrasted with the noticeable enhancement found previously in ferroelectric wires with notches. Finite element modeling of the electric field, developed in the nanowires during switching, revealed regions of increased and decreased local field at the center of the notch and antinotch structures, respectively; the absolute magnitude of field enhancement in the notch centers was considerably greater than the field reduction in the center of the antinotches and this was commensurate with the manner in, and degree to, which domain wall mobility appeared to be affected. We therefore conclude that the main mechanism by which morphology alters the irreversible component of the domain wall mobility in ferroelectric wire structures is via the manner in which morphological variations alter the spatial distribution of the electric field.

Prokaryotes represent one-half of the living biomass on Earth, with the vast majority remaining elusive to culture and study within the laboratory. As a result, we lack a basic understanding of the functions that many species perform in the natural world. To address this issue, we developed complementary population and single-cell stable isotope (C-13)-linked analyses to determine microbial identity and function in situ. We demonstrated that the use of rRNA/mRNA stable isotope probing (SIP) recovered the key phylogenetic and functional RNAs. This was followed by single-cell physiological analyses of these populations to determine and quantify in situ functions within an aerobic naphthalene-degrading groundwater microbial community. Using these culture-independent approaches, we identified three prokaryote species capable of naphthalene biodegradation within the groundwater system: two taxa were isolated in the laboratory (Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas putida), whereas the third eluded culture (an Acidovorax sp.). Using parallel population and single-cell stable isotope technologies, we were able to identify an unculturable Acidovorax sp. which played the key role in naphthalene biodegradation in situ, rather than the culturable naphthalene-biodegrading Pseudomonas sp. isolated from the same groundwater. The Pseudomonas isolates actively degraded naphthalene only at naphthalene concentrations higher than 30 mu M. This study demonstrated that unculturable microorganisms could play important roles in biodegradation in the ecosystem. It also showed that the combined RNA SIP-Raman-fluorescence in situ hybridization approach may be a significant tool in resolving ecology, functionality, and niche specialization within the unculturable fraction of organisms residing in the natural environment.

We use many-body theory to find the asymptotic behaviour of second-order correlation corrections to the energies and positron annihilation rates in many- electron systems with respect to the angular momenta l of the single-particle orbitals included. The energy corrections decrease as 1/(l+1/2)4, in agreement with the result of Schwartz, whereas the positron annihilation rate has a slower 1/(l+1/2)2 convergence rate. We illustrate these results by numerical calculations of the energies of Ne and Kr and by examining results from extensive con?guration-interaction calculations of PsH binding and annihilation.

Most single-reed woodwind instrument models rely on a quasistationary approximation to describe the relationship between the volume flow and. the pressure difference across the reed channel. Semiempirical models based on the quasistationary approximation are very useful in explaining the fundamental characteristics of this family of instruments such as self-sustained oscillations and threshold of blowing pressure. However, they fail at explaining more complex phenomena associated with the fluid-structure interaction during dynamic flow regimes, such as the transient and steady-state behavior of the system as a function. of the mouthpiece geometry. Previous studies have discussed the accuracy of the quasistationary approximation but the amount of literature on the subject is sparse, mainly due to the difficulties involved in the measurement of dynamic flows in channels with an oscillating reed. In this paper, a numerical technique based on the lattice Boltzmann method and a finite difference scheme is proposed in order to investigate the characteristics of fully coupled fluid-structure interaction in single-reed mouthpieces with different channel configurations. Results obtained for a stationary simulation with a static reed agree very well with those predicted by the literature based on the quasistationary approximation. However, simulations carried out for a dynamic regime with dn oscillating reed show that the phenomenon associated with flow detachment and reattachment diverges considerably frorn the theoretical assumptions. Furthermore, in the case of long reed channels, the results obtained for the vena contracta factor are in significant disagreement with those predicted by theory. For short channels, the assumption of constant vena contracta was found to be valid for only 40% of the duty cycle. (c) 2007 Acoustical Society of America.

1. Diet and health are intimately linked and recent studies have found that caloric restriction can affect immune function. However, when given a choice between diets that differ in their macronutrient composition, pathogen-infected individuals can select a diet that improves their survival, suggesting that the nutritional composition of the diet, as well as its calorie content, can play a role in defence against disease. Moreover, as individuals change their diet when infected, it suggests that a diet that is optimal for growth is not optimal for immunity, leading to trade-offs.
2. Currently, our knowledge of the effects of diet on immunity is limited because previous experiments have manipulated either single nutrients or the calorie content of the diet without considering their interactive effects. By simultaneously manipulating both the diet composition (quality) and its caloric density (quantity), in both naive and immune-challenged insects, we asked how do diet quality and quantity influence an individual's ability to mount an immune response? And to what extent are allocation trade-offs driven by quantity- versus quality-based constraints?
3. We restricted individuals to 20 diets varying in their protein and carbohydrate content and used 3D response surfaces to visualize dietary effects on larval growth and immune traits. Our results show that both constitutive and induced immune responses are not limited by the total quantity of nutrients consumed, but rather different traits respond differently to variation in the ratios of macronutrients (diet quality), and peak in different regions of macronutrient space. The preferred dietary composition therefore represents a compromise between the nutritional requirements of growth and immune responses. We also show that a non-pathogenic immune challenge does not affect diet choice, rather immune-challenged insects modify their allocation of nutrients to improve their immune response.
4. Our results indicate that immune traits are affected by the macronutrient content of the diet and that no diet can simultaneously optimize all components of the immune system. To date the emphasis has been on the effects of micronutrients in improving immunity, our findings indicate that this must be widened to include the neglected impact of macronutrients on defence against disease.

Mode-mixing of coherent excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is modeled using the Bogoliubov approximation. Calculations are presented for second-harmonic generation between the two lowest-lying even-parity m=0 modes in an oblate spheroidal trap. Hybridization of the modes of the breather (l=0) and surface (l=4) states leads to the formation of a Bogoliubov dark state near phase-matching resonance so that a single mode is coherently populated. Efficient harmonic generation requires a strong coupling rate, sharply-defined and well-separated frequency spectrum, and good phase matching. We find that in all three respects the quantal results are significantly different from hydrodynamic predictions. Typically the second-harmonic conversion rate is half that given by an equivalent hydrodynamic estimate.

A stationary phase model is used to study supercritical waves generated by high speed ferries. Some general relationships in terms of wave angle, propagation direction, dispersion relationship and depth wavelength relationship are explored and discussed. In particular, it is shown that the wave pattern generated by high speed craft at supercritical speeds depends mainly on the relationship of water depth and ship speed and that the wave patterns are similar in terms of location of crests and troughs for a given depth Froude number. In addition it is found that the far field wave pattern can be described adequately using a single moving point source. The theoretical model compares well with towing tank measurements and full scale data over a range of parameters and hull shapes. The paper also demonstrates that the far field wave pattern at supercritical speeds should be non-dimensionalised by water depth and not hull length unlike it is usually done for subcritical speeds.

The hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs; isoforms HIF-1 alpha, HIF-2 alpha, HIF-3 alpha) mediate many responses to hypoxia. Their regulation is principally by oxygen-dependent degradation, which is initiated by hydroxylation of specific proline residues followed by binding of von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) protein. Chuvash polycythemia is a disorder with elevated HIF. It arises through germline homozygosity for hypomorphic VHL alleles and has a phenotype of hematological, cardiopulmonary, and metabolic abnormalities. This study explores the phenotype of two other HIF pathway diseases: classic VHL disease and HIF-2 alpha gain-of-function mutation. No cardiopulmonary abnormalities were detected in classic VHL disease. HIF-2 alpha gain-of-function mutations were associated with pulmonary hypertension, increased cardiac output, increased heart rate, and increased pulmonary ventilation relative to metabolism. Comparison of the HIF-2 alpha gain-of-function responses with data from studies of Chuvash polycythemia suggested that other aspects of the Chuvash phenotype were diminished or absent. In classic VHL disease, patients are germline heterozygous for mutations in VHL, and the present results suggest that a single wild-type allele for VHL is sufficient to maintain normal cardiopulmonary function. The HIF-2 alpha gain-of-function phenotype may be more limited than the Chuvash phenotype either because HIF-1 alpha is not elevated in the former condition, or because other HIF-independent functions of VHL are perturbed in Chuvash polycythemia.-Formenti, F., Beer, P. A similar to 3 ps travelling wave chirped pulse amplified pulse at 6 x 10(14) W cm(-2) superimposed on similar to 300 ps background pulses is shown to be an efficient method to pump transient collisional excitation X-ray lasers in both Ni-like and Ne-like ions. Measurements of X-ray laser output as a function of plasma length are fitted with results of an amplified spontaneous emission model of the laser output taking account of travelling wave pumping effects. A small signal gain coefficient similar to 42 cm(-1) and a effective gain length product of similar to 18 are measured for the Ni-like Sn laser at 120 Angstrom. Simulations from a hydrodynamic and atomic physics code (EHYBRID) coupled to a ray trace code show that a spatially averaged small signal gain similar to 65 cm(-1) can be obtained in Ne-like Ge provided the optimum pumping pulse arrangement is used. Absolute doubly differential cross sections have been measured as a function of electron energy and angle of observation for electron emission in collisions of 3.5-MeV/u Fe17+ and Fe22+ ions with He and Ar gas targets under single-collision conditions. The measured electron emission cross sections are compared to theoretical and scaled cross sections based on the Born approximation. The results using intermediate-mass ions are discussed with reference to previously reported cross sections from collisions with highly charged lighter- and heavier-ion species at MeV/u projectile energies. The continuum-distorted-wave-eikonal-initial-state approximation shows good agreement with experiments except in the

The well-known shock solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation are revisited, together with their limitations in the context of plasma (astro)physical applications. Although available in the literature for a long time, it seems to have been forgotten in recent papers that such shocks are monotonic and unique, for a given plasma configuration, and cannot show oscillatory or bell-shaped features. This uniqueness is contrasted to solitary wave solutions of the two parent equations (Korteweg-de Vries and Burgers), which form a family of curves parameterized by the excess velocity over the linear phase speed.

The quality of single crystal diamond obtained by microwave CVD processes has been drastically improved in the last 5 years thanks to surface pretreatment of the substrates [A. Tallaire, J. Achard, F. Silva, R.S. Sussmann, A. Gicquel, E. Rzepka, Physica Status Solidi (A) 201, 2419-2424 (2004); G. Bogdan, M. Nesladek, J. D'Haen, J. Maes, V.V. Moshchalkov, K. Haenen, M. D'Olieslaeger, Physica Status Solidi (A) 202, 2066-2072 (2005); M. Yamamoto, T. Teraji, T. Ito, Journal of Crystal Growth 285, 130-136 (2005)]. Additionally, recent results have unambiguously shown the occurrence of (110) faces on crystal edges and (113) faces on crystal corners [F. Silva, J. Achard, X. Bonnin, A. Michau, A. Tallaire, O. Brinza, A. Gicquel, Physica Status Solidi (A) 203, 3049-3055 (2006)]. We have developed a 3D geometrical growth model to account for the final crystal morphology. The basic parameters of this growth model are the relative displacement speeds of (111), (110) and (113) faces normalized to that of the (100) faces, respectively alpha, beta, and gamma. This model predicts both the final equilibrium shape of the crystal (i.e. after infinite growth time) and the crystal morphology as a function of alpha, beta, gamma, and deposition time.
An optimized operating point, deduced from the model, has been validated experimentally by measuring the growth rate in (100), (111), (110), and (113) orientations. Furthermore, the evolution of alpha, beta, gamma as a function of methane concentration in the gas discharge has been established. From these results, crystal growth strategies can be proposed in order, for example, to enlarge the deposition area. In particular, we will show, using the growth model, that the only possibility to significantly increase the deposition area is, for our growth conditions, to use a (113) oriented substrate. A comparison between the grown crystal and the model results will be discussed and characterizations of the grown film (Photoluminescence spectroscopy, EPR, SEM) will be presented. A compact differential 4-way power combiner with 2.3 dB loss and high common-mode rejection characteristic for use in mm-wave PAs is presented. A complete circuit comprised of a power splitter, two-stage cascode PA array, and a power combiner was implemented in SiGe technology. Measured small-signal gain of at least 17 dB was obtained from 74.5 GHz to 80.5 GHz with a peak 21 dB at 79 GHz. The prototype delivered 13.2 dBm P1dB and 14.3 dBm Psat when operated from a single 3.3 V supply at 75 GHz.
