In this session we look at how to use Abstract Classes and Interfaces in Object Oriented Design - especially as a way to get all the advantages of multiple inheritance without any of the problems.

User Experience (a hidden barrier) in OER

More Open Education Resources (OER) and learning environments are being created and starting to mature and there are a number of barriers to learning and creator participation. One often overlooked barrier that has been given less attention, especially within OERs, is user experience (UX). UX is the way a person feels about using a product, system or service. We are creatures with emotional needs and, in the rush to get great content open and available sometimes the usability, the wow factor and good design principles get left by the wayside. I will demonstrate ways to think about UX for your OER and learning environments and why this is an important factor in helping engage learners with our educational materials. ‘The real payoff comes when we can make that remarkability last. User-Centred Methods for Measuring the Value of Open Data

A project to identify metrics for assessing the quality of open data based on the needs of small voluntary sector organisations in the UK and India. For this project we assumed the purpose of open data metrics is to determine the value of a group of open datasets to a defined community of users. We adopted a much more user-centred approach than most open data research using small structured workshops to identify users’ key problems and then working from those problems to understand how open data can help address them and the key attributes of the data if it is to be successful. We then piloted different metrics that might be used to measure the presence of those attributes. The result was six metrics that we assessed for validity, reliability, discrimination, transferability and comparability. This user-centred approach to open data research highlighted some fundamental issues with expanding the use of open data from its enthusiast base.

Signergias: red de coordinación de proyectos de SIG libre

La creciente importancia del uso de las aplicaciones SIG en las administraciones públicas, tanto españolas como europeas, ha dado lugar al surgimiento de diversos proyectos de desarrollo de software basados en licencias libres, cada uno de los cuales se dirige a un sector determinado de usuarios. Además, cada uno de estos proyectos define un modelo conceptual de datos para almacenar la información, servicios o módulos para el acceso a esa a información y funcionalidad que se le ofrece al usuario. La mayor parte de las veces estos proyectos se desarrollan de forma independiente a pesar de que existen interrelaciones claras entre todos ellos tales como compartir partes del modelo de datos, el interés común en dar soporte a aplicaciones de gestión municipal o el hecho de utilizar como base los mismos componentes. Estos motivos recomiendan buscar la confluencia entre los proyectos con el objetivo de evitar desarrollos duplicados y favorecer su integración e interoperabilidad. Por este motivo, en Enero de 2009 se constituyó la red signergias que busca mantener en contacto a los responsables de arquitectura y de desarrollo de estos proyectos con el fin de analizar las posibilidades de confluencia y de llegar a acuerdos que permitan compartir modelos de datos, definir de forma conjunta servicios y funcionalidades, o intercambiar componentes de software. En este artículo se describe la motivación de la creación de la red, sus objetivos, su forma de funcionamiento y los resultados alcanzados

Selenium cycling in volcanic environments: the role of soils as reactive interfaces

Selenium (Se) is an element with important health implications that is emitted in significant amounts from volcanoes. Attracted by the fertility of volcanic soils, around 10% of the world population lives within 100 km of an active volcano. Nevertheless, the behaviour of Se in volcanic environments is poorly understood. Therefore, the main aim of this thesis is to investigate the role of soils in the Se cycling in volcanic environments. Prior to the geochemical studies, precise and accurate methods for the determination of Se contents, speciation and isotopic signatures were developed. Afterwards, a combination of field studies and lab controlled experiments were performed with soils from two contrasting European volcanic settings: Mount Etna in Sicily (Italy) and Mount Teide in Tenerife (Spain). The results showed a strong link between Se behaviour and soil development, indicating that Se mobility in volcanic soils is controlled by sorption processes and soil mineralogy.
