Abstract Web 2.0 applications enabled users to classify information resources using their own vocabularies. The bottom-up nature of these user-generated classification systems have turned them into interesting knowledge sources, since they provide a rich terminology generated by potentially large user communities. Previous research has shown that it is possible to elicit some emergent semantics from the aggregation of individual classifications in these systems. However the generation of ontologies from them is still an open research problem. In this thesis we address the problem of how to tap into user-generated classification systems for building domain ontologies. Our objective is to design a method to develop domain ontologies from user-generated classifications systems. To do so, we rely on ontologies in the Web of Data to formalize the semantics of the knowledge collected from the classification system. Current ontology development methodologies have recognized the importance of reusing knowledge from existing resources. Thus, our work is framed within the NeOn methodology scenario for building ontologies by reusing and reengineering non-ontological resources. The main contributions of this work are: An integrated method to develop ontologies from user-generated classification systems. With this method we extract a domain terminology from the classification system and then we formalize the semantics of this terminology by reusing ontologies in the Web of Data. Identification and adaptation of existing techniques for implementing the activities in the method so that they can fulfill the requirements of each activity. A novel study about emerging semantics in user-generated lists.

ABSTRACT This project work describes and analyzes the comprehensive study of the effect of the vibrations produced by surface blasting carried out in the "Third Set of Locks" project executed for the expansion of the Panama Canal. A total of 53 records were collected, with the data generated by the monitoring of 7 seismographs in 10 production blasts carried out in 2010. The vibratory phenomenon has two fundamental parameters, the peak-particle velocity (PPV) and the dominant frequency, which characterize how damaging this can be compared to their influence on structures, which is why this is intended to characterize and predict fundamentally, that which allows proper control. Based on the above, the study consists of two parts; the first describes the behavior of the terrain by estimating the attenuation law for peak-particle velocity by using the ordinary least squares regression analysis, the second details a validable procedure for the prediction of the dominant frequency and pseudo-velocity response spectrum (PVRS) based on the theory of Newmark & Hall. The following have been obtained: (i) the attenuation law of the terrain for different degrees of reliability, (ii) blast design tools based on charge-distance ratio, (iii) the demonstration that the values of PPV conform to a log-normal distribution, (iv) the map of isolines of PPV for the area of study (v) detailed and valid technique for predicting the dominant frequency response spectrum, (vi) mathematical formulations of the amplification factors for displacement, velocity and acceleration, (vii) amplification of isolines map for the study area. From the results obtained, the study provides useful information for use in the design and control of blasting for subsequent projects.

----ABSTRACT--- The project has been developed during the second semester of the 2013/2014 academic year. This Project has been done inside EURECA and INTEGRATE European biomedical research projects, where the GIB (Biomedical Informatics Group) of the UPM works as a partner. Both projects aim is to develop platforms and services with the main goal of storing clinical information (e.g. information from hospital electronic health records (EHRs), clinical trials or research articles) in a common way and easy to access and query, in order to support medical research. The whole software environment of these projects is based on the idea of semantic interoperability, which means the ability of computer systems to exchange data with unambiguous and shared meaning. This idea allows knowledge inference, which fits perfectly in medical research context. The tool to develop in this project is also "semantic operability-oriented". Its purpose is to store standardized clinical information in a common data model, implemented in relational databases. The project has been performed during the period between February 3rd and June 6th, of 2014. It has followed a "Waterfall model" of software development, in which progress is seen as flowing steadily downwards through its phases. Each phase starts when its previous phase has been completed and reviewed. The task of documenting the project‟s work is an exception; it has been performed in a parallel way to the rest of the tasks.

The Spanish Mediterranean region hydrology is characterised by low rainfall, but concentrated in extreme convective events. Those heavy rains and storms lead to large, flash-floods which cause devastation of fields, villages and, unfortunately, loss of lives. Segura River Basin Authority has developed an ambitious plan for flood protection and control that is constituted by a system of flood protection dams, river channelling, river diversions diversions and levees. Flood protection dams placed on this area, are distinct structures, as they are located on extremely dry basins, with high slopes and limited vegetal covering. These facts, along with the very high rainfall intensity, are determinants of a rapid response and a very erosive flow. The flow transports a large rate of solids in suspension, and also debris, which many times block and clog the outlets intakes, disabling them. In such a case, the dam would be inoperative, in an emergency state and remedial measures should be taken. This PhD thesis analyses the flood protection dams operation criteria, for providing managers a methodology to analyse each individual case and also the flood protection system as a whole. Additionally practical rules and recommendations, to cope with the objectives of dam safety, flood protection and water resources use, are given. The rules consider the specific differences and risks that may be faced by the dams. To that end, they were grouped, depending on their characteristics: allowance for permanent water storage, environmental restrictions, water quality, geotechnical problems, type of structure, etc. As a result of this research, it is recommended to design these dams with valves for regulating the bottom outlets. The availability of valves is linked with the routing strategy of receiving flood with the outlets closed. This has been shown as the best measure to prevent clogging and opens the possibility of storing temporarily the water, making then a scheduled emptying of the reservoir, which could be computed as a virtual transfer to the regulating dams. Emptying should be done in accordance with the situation of the other dams of the system and of the rivers downstream. This detention time would make possible also the beginning of the sedimentation process which is necessary for using the water with the modern irrigation systems that are in use in this area.

Information obtained from studies of developmental and cellular processes in lower organisms is beginning to make significant contributions to the understanding of the pathogenesis of human birth defects, and it is now becoming possible to treat birth defects as inborn errors of development. Mutations in genes for transcription factors, receptors, cell adhesion molecules, intercellular junctions, molecules involved in signal transduction, growth factors, structural proteins, enzymes, and transporters have been identified in genetically caused human malformations and dysplasias. The identification of these mutations and the analysis of their developmental effects have been greatly facilitated by the existence of natural or engineered models in the mouse and even of related mutations in Drosophila, and in some instances a remarkable conservation of function in development has been observed, even between widely separated species.

Backbone networks are responsible for long-haul data transport serving many clients with a large volume of data. Since long-haul data transport service must rely on a robust high capacity network the current technology broadly adopted by the industry is Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). WDM networks enable one single ber to operate with multiple high capacity channels, drastically increasing the ber capacity. In WDM networks each channel is associated with an individual wavelength. Therefore a whole wavelength capacity is assigned to a connection, causing waste of bandwidth in case the connection bandwidth requirement is less than the channel total capacity. In the last half decade, Elastic Optical Networks (EON) have been proposed and developed based on the fexible use of the optical spectrum known as the exigrid. EONs are adaptable to clients requirements and may enhance optical networks performance. For these reasons, research community and data transport providers have been demonstrating increasingly high interest in EONs which are likely to replace WDM as the universally adopted technology in backbone networks in the near future. EONs have two characteristics that may limit its ecient resources use. The spectrum fragmentation, inherent to the dynamic EON operation, decrease the network capacity to assign resources to connection requests increasing network blocking probability. The spectrum fragmentation also intensifides the denial of service to higher rate request inducing service unfairness. Due to the fact EONs were just recently developed and proposed, the aforementioned issues were not yet extensively studied and solutions are still being proposed. Furthermore, EONs do not yet provide specific features as differentiated service mechanisms. Differentiated service strategies are important in backbone networks to guarantee client\'s diverse requirements in case of a network failure or the natural congestion and resources contention that may occur at some periods of time in a network. Impelled by the foregoing facts, this thesis objective is three-fold. By means of developing and proposing a mechanism for routing and resources assignment in EONs, we intend to provide differentiated service while decreasing fragmentation level and increasing service fairness. The mechanism proposed and explained in this thesis was tested in a EON simulation environment and performance results indicated that it promotes beneficial performance enhancements when compared to benchmark algorithms.

Film-based photographic collections of nitrate negatives pose major challenges to preservation and access because of unstable media and the lack of item-level indexing. Digitization offers an opportunity to capture the content of deteriorating negatives, to extend access to them, and to restore their usefulness as information resources. Digitization as a preservation strategy has been the subject of ongoing debate. This article contributes to the discussion by exploring access to and the preservation of film-based photographic collections and by presenting the digiti- zation project at the American Geographical Society Library as a case study. The project, Saving and Sharing the AGS Library’s Historic Nitrate Negative Images, was undertaken from 2010 to 2012 to preserve and provide access to over 69,000 nitrate negatives from its historic collections.
