In Brazil there are few studies on the occurrence of the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection and its subtypes, which are essential for the development of vaccines and new diagnostic tests. The present study investigated the occurrence of the FIV infection between 2010 and 2011 in domestic cats submitted to medical attendance in the city of Pelotas and nearby area. Total blood samples of seventy cats, suspected (28) or not (42) of infection by FIV were analyzed by nested PCR in order to perform a diagnosis. The results pointed to a FIV infection frequency of 15.7% (11/70) and the analysis of the risk factors related to infection (sex, age and clinical condition) evidenced a greater occurrence in cats up to 10 years of age with chronic and recurrent infections. Eight samples found positive by nested PCR were submitted to DNA sequencing indicating that only the subtype B was detected in the studied region.

Currently the study of important molecular compounds present in low abundance in some tissues has been a challenge for proteomic analysis classic. An analysis requires more exploratory investigation of small regions of a tissue or a group of cells. MALDI Imaging Technology (MSI) is an application of mass spectrometry facing the chemical analysis of intact tissues. Thus, advances in mass spectrometry MALDI being obtained by the integration of histology, the best methods and automation are the main tools of data analysis. This tool has become essential to analyze the spatial distribution of peptides and proteins throughout the tissue sections, providing an enormous amount of data with minimum sample preparation. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop the technique of MALDI Imaging using tissue from glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a form of most common malignant tumor in the brain. For this we used the printer chemical ChIP-1000 (Chemical Inkjet Printer, Shimadzu) and mass spectrometer type Maldi-ToF-ToF (Axima Performance, Shimadzu), a search of the identifications were performed in databases such as SwissProt. We identified more than forty proteins with diverse functions such as proteins F-actin-capping and Thymosin to the structure and organization cellular and proteins such several Tumor necrosis factor receptor development-related pathology. The development of this technique will permit to carry-out proteomic analysis directly into the tissue, enabling earlier diagnosis of diseases, as well as the identification and characterization of potential biomarkers of disease.

After the discovery of ionizing radiation, its applications in various fields of science began to take significant proportions. In the case of medicine, there are the application areas in radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine. It was then necessary to create the field of radiological protection to establish the conditions necessary for the safe use of such ionizing radiation. Apply knowledge obtained during the graduation stage and in the practice of radiological protection in the areas of nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology. In the area of nuclear medicine, tests were made in the Geiger-Muller counters (GM) and the dose calibrator (curiometer), the monitoring tests of radiation, waste management, clean of the Therapeutic room and testing the quality control of gamma-chambers. In the area of radiology, were performed tests of quality control equipment for conventional X-ray equipment and x-ray fluoroscopy, all following the rules of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), and reporting of tests. The routine developed in the fields of nuclear medicine in hospitals has proved very useful, since the quality control of GM counters contribute to the values of possible contamination are more reliable. The control of dose calibrator enables the patient not to receive different doses of the recommended amounts, which prevents the repetition of tests and unnecessary exposure to radiation. The management of waste following the rules and laws established and required for its management. Tests for quality control of gamma chambers help to evaluate its medical performance through image. In part of diagnostic radiology, tests for quality control are performed in order to verify that the equipment is acceptable for usage or if repairs are needed. Neste livro são expostos, para uso de profissionais da área, os princípios básicos e conceitos fundamentais, além dos procedimentos necessários para a prática da Medicina Baseada em Evidências (MBE). A MBE é uma prática relativamente nova, criada em 1992, pelo cientista epidemiologista Gordon Guyatt, na canadense McMaster University. Trata-se da utilização e do desenvolvimento de métodos rigorosos que respondam a questões clinicas sobre efetividade, eficiência e segurança de determinado tratamento e prevenção, bem como sobre a sensibilidade e especificidade de testes diagnósticos de certa doença na área de saúde. A MBE propõe realizar pesquisas de boa qualidade metodológica e livres de vieses e conflitos de interesse, de forma que as respostas sejam adequadas para auxiliar na tomada de decisão clínica. Segundo a MBE, a melhor forma de saber se uma medicação específica é eficaz no tratamento de determinada doença é a revisão sistemática de ensaios clínicos randomizados, que mapeiam os estudos publicados e não publicados realizados mundialmente sobre o assunto. Tal revisão deve ainda contar com metodologia rigorosa que busque, por exemplo, explicar resultados contraditórios sobre a mesma questão e comparar estudos com diferentes amostras para detectar possível diferença estatística. De forma didática e detalhada, mas mantendo todo o rigor científico, esta obra tem caráter de manual. Ao longo dos capítulos, seus autores explicam conceitos e apresentam o passo a passo da utilização da MBE para os profissionais de saúde.

Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is a progressive degenerative disorder of older dogs, characterized by a decline in cognitive function. The main clinical signs consistent with CDS are: disorientation, changes in socio-environmental interaction, sleep-wake cycle disturbance, changes in hygiene habits, urinate and/or defecate in unusual places, decreased physical activity, anxiety and eating disorders. There are no specific diagnostic tests for this condition in vivo, but alterations in neurological examination, cognitive tests and magnetic resonance imaging can be observed. The diagnosis is confirmed by histopathological examination of brain tissue. Diets rich in antioxidants, environmental enrichment with exercise and the use of selegiline and L-deprenyl have been recommended for the treatment of CDS.
