A vertex-based finite volume (FV) method is presented for the computational solution of quasi-static solid mechanics problems involving material non-linearity and infinitesimal strains. The problems are analysed numerically with fully unstructured meshes that consist of a variety of two- and threedimensional element types. A detailed comparison between the vertex-based FV and the standard Galerkin FE methods is provided with regard to discretization, solution accuracy and computational efficiency. For some problem classes a direct equivalence of the two methods is demonstrated, both theoretically and numerically. However, for other problems some interesting advantages and disadvantages of the FV formulation over the Galerkin FE method are highlighted.

Accurate patient positioning is vital for improved clinical outcomes for cancer treatments using radiotherapy. This project has developed Mega Voltage Cone Beam CT using a standard medical linear accelerator to allow 3D imaging of the patient position at treatment time with no additional hardware required. Providing 3D imaging functionality at no further cost allows enhanced patient position verification on older linear accelerators and in developing countries where access to new technology is limited.

Rare earth exchanged H–Y zeolites were prepared by simple ion exchange methods at 353 K and have been characterized using different physicochemical techniques. A strong peak around 58 ppm in the 27Al{1H} MAS NMR spectra of these zeolites suggests a tetrahedral coordination for the framework aluminium. Small peak at or near 0 ppm is due to hexa-coordinated extra-framework aluminium and a shoulder peak near 30 ppm is a penta-coordinated aluminium species; [Al(OH)4]−. The vapor-phase benzene alkylation with 1-decene and 1-dodecene was investigated with these catalytic systems. Under the reaction conditions of 448 K, benzene/olefin molar ratio of 20 and time on stream 3 h, the most efficient catalyst was CeH–Y which showed more than 70% of olefin conversion with 48.5% 2-phenyldecane and 46.8%, 2-phenyldodecane selectivities with 1-decene and 1-dodecene respectively.

In many industrial casting processes, knowledge of the solid fraction evolution during the solidification process is a key factor in determining the process parameters such as cooling rate, stirring intensity and in estimating the total solidification time. In the present work, a new method of estimating solid fraction is presented, which is based on calorimetric principles. In this method, the cooling curve data at each point in the melt, along with the thermal boundary conditions, are used to perform energy balance in the mould, from which solid fraction generation during any time interval can be estimated. This method is applied to the case of a rheocasting process, in which Al-Si alloy (A356 alloy) is solidified by stirring in a cylindrical mould placed in the annulus of a linear electromagnetic stirrer. The metal in the mould is simultaneously cooled and stirred to produce a cylindrical billet with non-dendritic globular microstructure. Temperature is measured at key locations in the mould to assess the various heat exchange processes prevalent in the mould and to monitor the solidification rate. The results obtained by energy balance method are compared with those by the conventional procedure of calculating solid fraction using the Schiel equation.

Designing bioactive peptides containing thioamide functionality to modulate their pharmacological properties has been thwarted so far because of various synthetic challenges. The fast, efficient, and inexpensive synthesis and incorporation of a wide range of thionated amino acids into a growing peptide chain on a solid support is reported using standard Fmoc-based chemistry. The commonly employed methodology is comprehensively investigated and optimized with significant improvements regarding the quantity of reagents and reaction conditions. The utility of the protocol is further demonstrated in the synthesis of dithionated linear and monothionated cyclic peptides, which has been a daunting task.

In this paper, we first present a system of differential-integral equations for the largedisturbance to the general case that any arbitrarily shaped solid body with a cavity contain-ing viscous liquid rotates uniformly around the principal axis of inertia, and then develop aweakly non-linear stability theory by the Lyapunov direct approach. Applying this theoryto the Columbus problem, we have proved the consistency between the theory and Kelvin'sexperiments.

A novel fiber coated with novel sol-gel (5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-diglycidyloxycalix[4]arene/hydroxy-terminated silicone oil; diglycidyloxy-C[4]/OH-TSO) was prepared for use with headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography (GC) and electron capture detection (ECD), which was applied in order to determine nine chlorobenzenes in soil matrices. Due to the improved fiber preparation, which increases the percentage of calixarene in the coating, the new calixarene fiber exhibits very high extraction selectivity and sensitivity to chlorine-substituted compounds. Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized in order to maximize the sensitivity during the chlorobenzene analysis. Interferences from different soil matrices with different characteristics were investigated, and the amount extracted was strongly influenced by the matrix. Therefore, a standard addition protocol was performed on the real soil samples. The linear ranges of detection for the chlorobenzenes tested covered three orders of magnitude, and correlation coefficients > 0.9976 and relative standard deviations (RSD) < 8% were observed. The detection limits were found at sub-ng/g of soil levels, which were about an order of magnitude lower than those given by the commercial poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) coating for most of the compounds. The recoveries ranged from 64 to 109.6% for each analyte in the real kaleyard soil matrix when different concentration levels were determined over the linear range, which confirmed the reliability and feasibility of the HS-SPME/GC-ECD approach using the fiber coated with diglycidyloxy-C[4]/OH-TSO for the ultratrace analysis of chlorobenzenes in complex matrices.

Three major odorous compounds are 2-methylisoborneol ( 2-MIB), geosmin and beta-cyclocitral, which in water were determined by coupling headspace solid-phase microextraction ( HS-SPME) with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The operating conditions of HS-SPME, such as fibre type, salt concentration, water temperature, stirring, absorption time and desorption time were studied and discussed. The highest absorption of the odorous compounds were obtained under the following operating conditions as the addition of 30% ( m/V) NaCl, stirring at 60 degrees C for 40 min, using 65 mu m polydimethyl siloxane/divinylbenzene coated fibre. After the odorous compounds had been absorbed in the fibre under the optimal conditions of HSSPME, they were desorbed at 250 degrees C and determined by GC-MS. The limits of detection for geosmin, beta-cyclocitral and 2-MIB in water were 1. 0, 1. 3, 1. 7 ng/L, and the relative standard deviations for them were 4. 9%, 8. 4%, 6. 2%,respectively. There were good linear correlation (the calibration coefficients were all above 0. 997) for the three odorous compounds in the range of 5 similar to 1000 ng/ L. Therefore, trace levels of the odorous compounds at ng/L in water could be quantified by the simple method with satisfactory result.

Ultrasonic solvent extraction combined with solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with calix[4]arene/hydroxy-terminated silicone (C[4]/OHTSO) oil coated fiber was used to extract phthalate acid esters (PAEs) plasticizers in plastic, such as blood bags, transfusion tubing, food packaging bag, and mineral water bottle for analysis by gas chromatography (GC). Both extraction parameters (i.e. extraction time, extraction temperature, ionic strength) and conditions of the thermal desorption in a GC injector were optimized by analysis of eight phthalates. The fiber shows wonderful sensitivity and selectivity to the tested compounds. Owing to its high thermal stability (380 degreesC), the carryover effect that often encountered when using conventional fibers can be reduced by appropriately enhancing the injector temperature. The method showed linear response over two to four orders of magnitude with correlation coefficients (r) better than 0.996, and limits of detection (LOD) ranged between 0.006 and 0.084 mug l(-1). The relative standard deviation values obtained were less than or equal to 10%. bis-2-Ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) was the sole analyte detected in these plastics and recoveries were in the ranges 95.5-101.4% in all the samples. In this paper, a low-power, highly linear, integrated, active-RC filter exhibiting a multi-standard (IEEE 802.11a/b/g and DVB-H) application and bandwidth (3MHz, 4MHz, 9.5MHz) is present. The filter exploits digitally-controlled polysilicon resister banks and an accurate automatic tuning scheme to account for process and temperature variations. The automatic frequency calibration scheme provides better than 3% corner frequency accuracy. The Butterworth filter is design for receiver (WLAN and DVB-H mode) and transmitter (WLAN mode). The filter dissipation is 3.4 mA in RX mode and 2.3 mA (only for one path) in TX mode from 2.85-V supply. The dissipation of calibration consumes 2mA. The circuit has been fabricated in a 0.35um 47-GHz SiGe BiCMOS technology, the receiver and transmitter occupy 0.28-mm(2) and 0.16-mm(2) (calibration circuit excluded), respectively.

We report capillary electrophoresis coupling to a solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detector for the first time. The solid-state ECL detector was fabricated by immobilizing the ECL reagent tris(2,2'-bipyridyf)ruthenium (TBR) in poly-(p-styrenesulfonate)-silica-poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine copolymer films. The excellent stability of the solid-state ECL detector in the phosphate solution satisfied application in CE. The CE with solid-state ECL detector system was characterized using tripropylamine (TPA) and proline. The influences of detection potential, the concentration of TBR in the film, and pH value of ECL buffer were investigated. The linear range for TPA and proline was 0.005-10 muM and 5-10 mM with correlation coefficients of 0.997 and 0.998, respectively. The detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio S/N = 3) was estimated to be 0.002 and 2.0 muM for TPA and proline, respectively. The relative standard deviations for 1.0 pm TPA and 1.0 mm proline were 8.7% and 7.5% with theoretical plate numbers of 70 000 and 16 000, respectively. Compared with the CE-ECL of TBR in aqueous solution, the CE coupling with solid-state ECL detector system gave the same sensitivity of analysis.

We are presenting a simple, low-cost and rapid solid-state optical probe for screening chlorpromazine (CPZ) in aquacultures. The method exploits the colourimetric reaction between CPZ and Fe(III) ion that occurs at a solid/liquid interface, the solid layer consisting of ferric iron entrapped in a layer of plasticized PVC. If solutions containing CPZ are dropped onto such a layer, a colour change occurs from light yellow to dark pink or even light blue, depending on the concentration of CPZ. Visual inspection enables the concentration of CPZ to be estimated. The resulting colouration was also monitored by digital image collection for a more accurate quantification. The three coordinates of the hue, saturation and lightness system were obtained by standard image processing along with mathematical data treatment. The parameters affecting colour were assessed and optimized. Studies were conducted by visible spectrophotometry and digital image acquisition, respectively. The response of the optimized probe towards the concentration of CPZ was tested for several mathematical transformations of the colour coordinates, and a linear relation was found for the sum of hue and luminosity. The limit of detection is 50 μM (corresponding to about 16 μg per mL). The probe enables quick screening for CPZ in real water samples with prior sample treatment.

The physical and chemical characteristics of peat were assessed through measurement of pH, percentage of organic matter, cationic exchange capacity (CEC), elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and quantitative analysis of metals by ICP OES. Despite the material showed to be very acid in view of the percentage of organic matter, its CEC was significant, showing potential for retention of metal ions. This characteristic was exploited by coupling a peat mini-column to a flow system based on the multicommutation approach for the in-line copper concentration prior to flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination. Cu(II) ions were adsorbed at pH 4.5 and eluted with 0.50 mol L(-1) HNO(3). The influence of chemical and hydrodynamic parameters, such as sample pH, buffer concentration, eluent type and concentration, sample flow-rate and preconcentration time were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, a linear response was observed between 16 and 100 mu g L(-1), with a detection limit estimated as 3 mu g L(-1) at the 99.7% confidence level and an enrichment factor of 16. The relative standard deviation was estimated as 3.3% (n = 20). The mini-column was used for at least 100 sampling cycles without significant variation in the analytical response. Recoveries from copper spiked to lake water or groundwater as well as concentrates used in hemodialysis were in the 97.3-111 % range. The results obtained for copper determination in these samples agreed with those achieved by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) at the 95% confidence level. A dynamic atmosphere generator with a naphthalene emission source has been constructed and used for the development and evaluation of a bioluminescence sensor based on the bacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens HK44 immobilized in 2% agar gel (101 cell mL(-1)) placed in sampling tubes. A steady naphthalene emission rate (around 7.3 nmol min(-1) at 27 degrees C and 7.4 mLmin(-1) of purified air) was obtained by covering the diffusion unit containing solid naphthalene with a PTFE filter membrane. The time elapsed from gelation of the agar matrix to analyte exposure (""maturation time"") was found relevant for the bioluminescence assays, being most favorable between 1.5 and 3 h. The maximum light emission, observed after 80 min, is dependent on the analyte concentration and the exposure time (evaluated between 5 and 20 min), but not on the flow rate of naphthalene in the sampling tube, over the range of 1.8-7.4 nmol min(-1). A good linear response was obtained between 50 and 260 nmol L-1 with a limit of detection estimated in 20 nmol L-1 far below the recommended threshold limit value for naphthalene in air. This paper reports on the development and optimization of a modified Quick, Easy, Cheap Effective, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) based extraction technique coupled with a clean-up dispersive-solid phase extraction (dSPE) as a new, reliable and powerful strategy to enhance the extraction efficiency of free low molecular-weight polyphenols in selected species of dietary vegetables. The process involves two simple steps. First, the homogenized samples are extracted and partitioned using an organic solvent and salt solution. Then, the supernatant is further extracted and cleaned using a dSPE technique. Final clear extracts of vegetables were concentrated under vacuum to near dryness and taken up into initial mobile phase (0.1% formic acid and 20% methanol). The separation and quantification of free low molecular weight polyphenols from the vegetable extracts was achieved by ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) equipped with a phodiode array (PDA) detection system and a Trifunctional High Strength Silica capillary analytical column (HSS T3), specially designed for polar compounds. The performance of the method was assessed by studying the selectivity, linear dynamic range, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, trueness, and matrix effects. The validation parameters of the method showed satisfactory figures of merit. Good linearity (View the MathML sourceRvalues2>0.954; (+)-catechin in carrot samples) was achieved at the studied concentration range. Reproducibility was better than 3%. Consistent recoveries of polyphenols ranging from 78.4 to 99.9% were observed when all target vegetable samples were spiked at two concentration levels, with relative standard deviations (RSDs, n = 5) lower than 2.9%. The LODs and the LOQs ranged from 0.005 μg mL−1 (trans-resveratrol, carrot) to 0.62 μg mL−1 (syringic acid, garlic) and from 0.016 μg mL−1 (trans-resveratrol, carrot) to 0.87 μg mL−1 ((+)-catechin, carrot) depending on the compound. The method was applied for studying the occurrence of free low molecular weight polyphenols in eight selected dietary vegetables (broccoli, tomato, carrot, garlic, onion, red pepper, green pepper and beetroot), providing a valuable and promising tool for food quality evaluation.
