This article presents a back-electromotive force (BEMF)-based technique of detection for sensorless brushless direct current motor (BLDCM) drivers. The BLDCM has been chosen as the energy converter in rotary or pulsatile blood pumps that use electrical motors for pumping. However, in order to operate properly, the BLDCM driver needs to know the shaft position. Usually, that information is obtained through a set of Hall sensors assembled close to the rotor and connected to the electronic controller by wires. Sometimes, a large distance between the motor and controller makes the system susceptible to interference on the sensor signal because of winding current switching. Thus, the goal of the sensorless technique presented in this study is to avoid this problem. First, the operation of BLDCM was evaluated on the electronic simulator PSpice. Then, a BEMF detector circuitry was assembled in our laboratories. For the tests, a sensor-dependent system was assembled where the direct comparison between the Hall sensors signals and the detected signals was performed. The obtained results showed that the output sensorless detector signals are very similar to the Hall signals at speeds of more than 2500 rpm. Therefore, the sensorless technique is recommended as a responsible or redundant system to be used in rotary blood pumps.

Honeycomb structures have been used in different engineering fields. In civil engineering, honeycomb fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) structures have been used as bridge decks to rehabilitate highway bridges in the United States. In this work, a simplified finite-element modeling technique for honeycomb FRP bridge decks is presented. The motivation is the combination of the complex geometry of honeycomb FRP decks and computational limits, which may prevent modeling of these decks in detail. The results from static and modal analyses indicate that the proposed modeling technique provides a viable tool for modeling the complex geometry of honeycomb FRP bridge decks. The modeling of other bridge components (e.g., steel girders, steel guardrails, deck-to-girder connections, and pier supports) is also presented in this work.

Copper strike baths are extensively used in metal plating industry as they present the ability to plate adherent copper layers on less-noble metal substrates such as steel and zinc die castings. However, in the last few years, due to environmental controls and safety policies for operators, the plating industry has been interested in replacing the toxic cyanide copper strike baths with environmentally friendly baths. A broad bibliographic review showed that the published papers, referring to the new nontoxic copper strike baths, are patents, having little or no emphasis focused on electrodeposition mechanisms. Therefore, it was decided to study the copper electrodeposition mechanism from a strike alkaline bath prepared with one of the most nontoxic chelating agents cited in many patents which is the 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid, known as HEDP. This acid forms very stable water soluble complexes with Cu(2+) ions, thus cupric sulfate was used for preparing the plating bath. The results obtained through a cyclic voltammetry technique showed that Cu(2+) ion reduction to Cu from an HEDP electrodeposition bath occurs via a direct reduction reaction without a formation of Cu(+) intermediates. In this work the performance of graded-channel (CC) SOI MOSFETs operating as source-follower buffers is presented. The experimental analysis is performed by comparing the gain and linearity of buffers implemented with CC and standard SOI MOS devices considering the same mask dimensions. It is shown that by using CC devices, buffer gain very close to the theoretical limit can be achieved, with improved linearity, while for standard devices the gain departs from the theoretical value depending on the inversion level imposed by the bias current and input voltage. Two-dimensional numerical simulations were performed in order to confirm some hypotheses proposed to explain the gain behavior observed in the experimental data. By using numerical simulations the channel length has been varied, showing that the gain of buffers implemented with CC devices remains close to the theoretical limit even when short-channel devices are adopted. It has also been shown that the length of a source-follower buffer using CC devices can be reduced by a factor of 5, in comparison with a standard Sol MOSFET, without gain loss or linearity degradation. In this work we report on a study of the morphological changes of LDL induced in vitro by metallic ions (Cu(2+) and Fe(3+)). These modifications were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and the Z-scan technique. The degree of oxidative modification of LDL was determined by the TBARS and lipid hydroperoxides assays. It is shown that distinct pathways for modifying lipoproteins lead to different morphological transformations of the particles characterized by changes in size and/or shape of the resulting particles, and by the tendency to induce aggregation of the particles. There were no evidence of melting of particles promoted by oxidative processes with Cu and Fe. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

A simple, fast, inexpensive and reliable capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method for the determination of econazole nitrate in cream formulations has been developed and validated. Optimum conditions comprised a pH 2.5 phosphate buffer at 20 mmol L(-1) concentration, +30 kV applied voltage in a 31.5 cm x 50 mu m I.D. capillary. Direct UV detection at 200 nm led to an adequate sensitivity without interference from sample excipients. A single extraction step of the cream sample in hydrochloric acid was performed prior to injection. Imidazole (100 mu g mL(-1)) was used as internal standard. Econazole nitrate migrates in approximately 1.2 min. The analytical curve presented a coefficient of correlation of 0.9995. Detection and quantitation limits were 1.85 and 5.62 mu g mL(-1), respectively. Excellent accuracy and precision were obtained. Recoveries varied from 98.1 to 102.5% and intra- and inter-day precisions, calculated as relative standard deviation (RSD), were better than 2.0%. The proposed CZE method presented advantageous performance characteristics and it can be considered suitable for the quality control of econazole nitrate cream formulations. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. In this study, a simple, rapid and sensitive HPLC method with UV detection is described for determination of metformin in plasma samples from bioequivalence assays. Sample preparation was accomplished through protein precipitation with acetonitrile and chromatographic separation was performed on a reversed-phase phenyl column at 40 degrees C. Mobile phase consisted of a mixture of phosphate buffer and acetonitrile at flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. Wavelength was set at 236 nm. The method was applied to a bioequivalence study of two drug products containing metformin, and allowed determination of metformin at low concentrations with a higher throughput than previously described methods. A partial pseudo-ternary phase diagram has been studied for the cethyltrimethylammonium bromide/isooctane:hexanol:butanol/potassium phosphate buffer system, where the two-phase diagram consisting of the reverse micelle phase (L-2) in equilibrium with the solvent is indicated. Based on these diagrams two-phase systems of reverse micelles were prepared with different compositions of the compounds and used for extraction and recovery of two enzymes, and the percentage of enzyme recovery yield monitored. The enzymes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and xylose redutase (XR) obtained from Candida guilliermondii yeast were used in the extraction procedures. The recovery yield data indicate that micelles having different composition give selective extraction of enzymes. The method can thus be used to optimize enzyme extraction processes. In vitro skin permeation of hyaluronidase enzyme and the ultrasound (US) effects on cutaneous permeation of this enzyme were investigated. Diffusion cell technique, porcine skins, buffer solution, and a hydrophilic gel+hyaluronidase (100 TUR/g), were used for study. The experimental groups were: gel+enzyme and gel+enzyme+US. The activity of permeated hyaluronidase was determined by turbydimetric method in spectrophotometer at 400nm. Gel+enzyme group permitted a diffusion of 26.89 +/- 3.82 TUR of hyaluronidase in the total time of 240 minutes. However, the other group did not produce significant differences (p0.05) in the same period (13.68 +/- 5.35 TUR). Hyaluronidase permeation through the skin was verified; however US did not cause increase of this enzyme permeation.

Hydrophilic dentin adhesives are prone to water sorption that adversely affects the durability of resin-dentin bonds. This study examined the feasibility of bonding to dentin with hydrophobic resins via the adaptation of electron microscopy tissue processing techniques. Hydrophobic primers were prepared by diluting 2,2-bis[4(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy-propyloxy)-phenyl] propane/triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate resins with known ethanol concentrations. They were applied to acid-etched moist dentin using an ethanol wet bonding technique that involved: (1) stepwise replacement of water with a series of increasing ethanol concentrations to prevent the demineralized collagen matrix from collapsing; (2) stepwise replacement of the ethanol with different concentrations of hydrophobic primers and subsequently with neat hydrophobic resin. Using the ethanol wet bonding technique, the experimental primer versions with 40, 50, and 75% resin exhibited tensile strengths which were not significantly different from commercially available hydrophilic three-step adhesives that were bonded with water wet bonding technique. The concept of ethanol wet bonding may be explained in terms of solubility parameter theory. This technique is sensitive to water contamination, as depicted by the lower tensile strength results from partial dehydration protocols. The technique has to be further improved by incorporating elements of dentin permeability reduction to avoid water from dentinal tubules contaminating water-free resin blends during bonding. A method for simultaneous determination of seven benzodiazepines (BZPs) (flunitrazepam, clonazepam, oxazepam, lorazepam, chlordiazepoxide, nordiazepam and diazepam using N-desalkylflurazepam as internal standard) in human plasma using liquid-liquid and solid-phase extractions followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is described. The analytes were separated employing a LC-18 DB column (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 mu m) at 35 degrees C under isocratic conditions using 5 mM KH(2)PO(4) buffer solution pH 6.0: methanol: diethyl ether (55:40:5, v/v/v) as mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.8 mL min(-1). UV detection was carried out at 245 nm. Employing LLE, the best conditions were achieved with double extraction of 0.5 mL, plasma using ethyl acetate and Na(2)HPO(4) pH 9.5 for pH adjusting. Employing SPE, the best conditions were achieved with 0.5 mL plasma plus 3 mL 0.1 M borate buffer pH 9.5, which were then passed through a C18 cartridge previously conditioned, washed for 3 times with these solvents: 3 mL 0.1 M borate buffer pH 9.5,4 mL Milli-Q water and 1 mL acetonitrile 5%, finally the BZPs elution was carried with diethyl ether: n-hexane: methanol (50:30:20). In both methods the solvent was evaporated at 40 degrees C under nitrogen flow. The validation parameters obtained in LLE were linearity range of 50-1200 ng mL(-1) plasma (r >= 0.9927), limits of quantification of 50 ng mL(-1) plasma, within-day and between-day CV% and E% for precision and accuracy lower than 15%, and recovery above 65% for all BZPs. In SPE, the parameter obtained were linearity range of 30-1200 ng mL(-1) plasma (r >= 0.9900), limits of quantification of 30 ng mL(-1) plasma, within-day and between-day CV% and E% for precision and accuracy lower than 15% and recovery above 55% for all BZPs. These extracting procedures followed by HPLC analysis showed their suitable applicability in order to examine one or more BZPs in human plasma. Moreover, it could be suggested that these procedures might be employed in various analytical applications, in special for toxicological/forensic analysis. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. A simple, rapid and sensitive analytical procedure for the measurement of imiquimod in skin samples after in vitro penetration studies has been developed and validated. In vitro penetration studies were carried out in Franz diffusion cells with porcine skin. Tape stripping technique was used to separate the stratum corneum (SC) from the viable epidermis and dermis. Imiquimod was extracted from skin samples using a 7:3 (v/v) methanol:acetate buffer (100 mm, pH 4.0) solution and ultrasonication. Imiquimod was analyzed by H-PLC using C(8) column and UV detection at 242 ran. The mobile phase used was acetonitrile:acetate buffer (pH 4.0, 100 mM):diethylamine (30:69.85:0.15, v/v) with flow rate 1 mL/min. Imiquimod eluted at 4.1 min and the running time was limited to 6.0 min. The procedure was linear across the following concentration ranges: 100-2500 ng/mL for both SC and tape-stripped skin and 20-800 ng/mL for receptor solution. Intra-day and inter-day accuracy and precision values were lower than 20% at the limit of quantitation. The recovery values ranged from 80 to 100%. The method is adequate to assay imiquimod from skin samples, enabling the determination of the cutaneous penetration profile of uniquimod by in vitro studies. Pharmaceuticals can exist in many solid forms, which can have different physical and chemical properties. These solid forms include polymorphs, solvates, amorphous, and hydrates. Particularly, hydration process can be quite common since pharmaceutical solids can be in contact with water during manufacturing process and can also be exposed to water during storage. In the present work, it is proved that NQR technique is capable of detecting different hydrated forms not only in the pure raw material but also in the final product (tablets), being in this way a useful technique for quality control. This technique was also used to study the dehydration process from pentahydrate to trihydrate.

A general, fast wavelet-based adaptive collocation method is formulated for heat and mass transfer problems involving a steep moving profile of the dependent variable. The technique of grid adaptation is based on sparse point representation (SPR). The method is applied and tested for the case of a gas–solid non-catalytic reaction in a porous solid at high Thiele modulus. Accurate and convergent steep profiles are obtained for Thiele modulus as large as 100 for the case of slab and found to match the analytical solution.

In this paper, we propose a fast adaptive importance sampling method for the efficient simulation of buffer overflow probabilities in queueing networks. The method comprises three stages. First, we estimate the minimum cross-entropy tilting parameter for a small buffer level; next, we use this as a starting value for the estimation of the optimal tilting parameter for the actual (large) buffer level. Finally, the tilting parameter just found is used to estimate the overflow probability of interest. We study various properties of the method in more detail for the M/M/1 queue and conjecture that similar properties also hold for quite general queueing networks. Numerical results support this conjecture and demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
