FEAST is a recently developed eigenvalue algorithm which computes selected interior eigenvalues of real symmetric matrices. It uses contour integral resolvent based projections. A weakness is that the existing algorithm relies on accurate reasoned estimates of the number of eigenvalues within the contour. Examining the singular values of the projections on moderately-sized, randomly-generated test problems motivates orthogonalization-based improvements to the algorithm. The singular value distributions provide experimentally robust estimates of the number of eigenvalues within the contour. The algorithm is modified to handle both Hermitian and general complex matrices. The original algorithm (based on circular contours and Gauss-Legendre quadrature) is extended to contours and quadrature schemes that are recursively subdividable. A general complex recursive algorithm is implemented on rectangular and diamond contours. The accuracy of different quadrature schemes for various contours is investigated.

We show that the non-embedded eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on the real line with complex mass and non-Hermitian potential V lie in the disjoint union of two disks, provided that the L1-norm of V is bounded from above by the speed of light times the reduced Planck constant. The result is sharp; moreover, the analogous sharp result for the Schrödinger operator, originally proved by Abramov, Aslanyan and Davies, emerges in the nonrelativistic limit. For massless Dirac operators, the condition on V implies the absence of non-real eigenvalues. Our results are further generalized to potentials with slower decay at infinity. As an application, we determine bounds on resonances and embedded eigenvalues of Dirac operators with Hermitian dilation-analytic potentials.

In this paper, we are concerned with determining values of lambda, for which there exist positive solutions of the nonlinear eigenvalue problem [GRAPHICS] where a, b, c, d is an element of [0, infinity), xi(i) is an element of (0, 1), alpha(i), beta(i) is an element of [0 infinity) (for i is an element of {1, ..., m - 2}) are given constants, p, q is an element of C ([0, 1], (0, infinity)), h is an element of C ([0, 1], [0, infinity)), and f is an element of C ([0, infinity), [0, infinity)) satisfying some suitable conditions. Our proofs are based on Guo-Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Based on Reddy's third-order theory, the first-order theory and the classical theory, exact explicit eigenvalues are found for compression buckling, thermal buckling and vibration of laminated plates via analogy with membrane vibration, These results apply to symmetrically laminated composite plates with transversely isotropic laminae and simply supported polygonal edges, Comprehensive consideration of a Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation, a hydrostatic inplane force, an initial temperature increment and rotary inertias is incorporated. Bridged by the vibrating membrane, exact correspondences are readily established between any pairs of buckling and vibration eigenvalues associated with different theories. Positive definiteness of the critical hydrostatic pressure at buckling, the thermobukling temperature increment and, in the range of either tension loading or compression loading prior to occurrence of buckling, the natural vibration frequency is proved. This paper presents a method to analyze the first order eigenvalue sensitivity with respect to the operating parameters of a power system. The method is based on explicitly expressing the system state matrix into sub-matrices. The eigenvalue sensitivity is calculated based on the explicitly formed system state matrix. The 4th order generator model and 4th order exciter system model are used to form the system state matrix. A case study using New England 10-machine 39-bus system is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. This method can be applied into large scale power system eigenvalue sensitivity with respect to operating parameters.

We scrutinize the concept of integrable nonlinear communication channels, resurrecting and extending the idea of eigenvalue communications in a novel context of nonsoliton coherent optical communications. Using the integrable nonlinear Schrödinger equation as a channel model, we introduce a new approach - the nonlinear inverse synthesis method - for digital signal processing based on encoding the information directly onto the nonlinear signal spectrum. The latter evolves trivially and linearly along the transmission line, thus, providing an effective eigenvalue division multiplexing with no nonlinear channel cross talk. The general approach is illustrated with a coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmission format. We show how the strategy based upon the inverse scattering transform method can be geared for the creation of new efficient coding and modulation standards for the nonlinear channel. © Published by the American Physical Society.

We deal with a class of elliptic eigenvalue problems (EVPs) on a rectangle Ω ⊂ R^2 , with periodic or semi–periodic boundary conditions (BCs) on ∂Ω. First, for both types of EVPs, we pass to a proper variational formulation which is shown to fit into the general framework of abstract EVPs for symmetric, bounded, strongly coercive bilinear forms in Hilbert spaces, see, e.g., [13, §6.2]. Next, we consider finite element methods (FEMs) without and with numerical quadrature. The aim of the paper is to show that well–known error estimates, established for the finite element approximation of elliptic EVPs with classical BCs, hold for the present types of EVPs too. Some attention is also paid to the computational aspects of the resulting algebraic EVP. Finally, the analysis is illustrated by two non-trivial numerical examples, the exact eigenpairs of which can be determined.

We consider a model eigenvalue problem (EVP) in 1D, with periodic or semi–periodic boundary conditions (BCs). The discretization of this type of EVP by consistent mass finite element methods (FEMs) leads to the generalized matrix EVP Kc = λ M c, where K and M are real, symmetric matrices, with a certain (skew–)circulant structure. In this paper we fix our attention to the use of a quadratic FE–mesh. Explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of the resulting algebraic EVP are established. This leads to an explicit form for the approximation error in terms of the mesh parameter, which confirms the theoretical error estimates, obtained in [2].

One of the extraordinary aspects of nonlinear wave evolution which has been observed as the spontaneous occurrence of astonishing and statistically extraordinary amplitude wave is called rogue wave. We show that the eigenvalues of the associated equation of nonlinear Schrödinger equation are almost constant in the vicinity of rogue wave and we validate that optical rogue waves are formed by the collision between quasi-solitons in anomalous dispersion fiber exhibiting weak third order dispersion.

The impact of third-order dispersion (TOD) on optical rogue wave phenomenon is investigated numerically. We validate the TOD coefficient by utilizing the eigenvalue of the associated equation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). © 2014 OSA.
