SrTiO3:Pr3+,Al3+ phosphor samples with varying ratios of Sr/Ti/Al were prepared by the gel-carbonate method and the mechanism of enhancement of the red photoluminescence intensity therein was investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of SrTiO3:Pr3+ show both D-1(2) --> H-3(4) and P-3(0) --> H-3(4) emission in the red and blue spectral regions, respectively, with comparable intensity. The emission intensity of D-1(2) --> H-3(4) is drastically enhanced by the incorporation of Al3+ and excess Ti4+ in the compositional range Sr(Ti,Al-y)(O3+3y/2):Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.4) and SrTi1+xAlyO3+z:Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5; 0.05 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.1; z = 2x + 3y/2) with the complete disappearance of the blue band. This cannot be explained by the simple point defect model as the EPR studies do not show any evidence for the presence of electron or hole centers. TEM investigations show the presence of exsolved nanophases of SrAl12O19 and/or TiO2 in the grain boundary region as well as grain interiors as lamellae which, in turn, form the solid-state defects, namely, dislocation networks, stacking faults and crystallographic shear planes whereby the framework of corner shared TiO6 octehedra changes over to edge-sharing TiO5-AlO5 strands as indicated from the Al-27 MAS NMR studies. The presence of transitional nanophases and the associated defects modify the excitation-emission processes by way of formation of electronic sub-levels at 3.40 and 4.43 eV, leading to magnetic-dipole related red emission with enhanced intensity. This is evidenced by the fact that SrAl12O19:Pr3+,Ti4+ shows bright red emission whereas SrAl12O19:Pr3+ does not show red photoluminescence.

Gd1.95Eu0.4M0.01O3 (M = Li+ Na+ K+) nanophosphors have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion (LSC) method. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out to characterize their structural and luminescent properties. The excitation and emission spectra indicated that the phosphor could be well excited by UV light (243 nm) and emit red light about 612 nm. The effect of alkali co-dopant on PL properties has been examined. The results showed that incorporation of Li+, Na+ and K+ in to Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor would lead to a remarkable increase of photoluminescence. The PL intensity of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor was improved evidently by co-doping with Li+ ions whose radius is less than that of Gd3+ and hardly with Na+, K+ whose radius is larger than that of Gd3+. The effect of co-dopants on enhanced luminescence was mainly regarded as the result of a suitable local distortion of crystal field surrounding the Eu3+ activator. These results will play an important role in seeking some more effective co-dopants. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Gd2O3:Eu3+ (4 mol%) co-doped with Bi3+ (Bi = 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 mol%) ions were synthesized by a low-temperature solution combustion method. The powders were calcined at 800A degrees C and were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The PXRD profiles confirm that the calcined products were in monoclinic with little cubic phases. The particle sizes were estimated using Scherrer's method and Williamson-Hall plots and are found to be in the ranges 40-60 nm and 30-80 nm, respectively. The results are in good agreement with TEM results. The photoluminescence spectra of the synthesized phosphors excited with 230 nm show emission peaks at similar to 590, 612 and 625 nm, which are due to the transitions D-5(0)-> F-7(0), D-5(0)-> F-7(2) and D-5(0)-> F-7(3) of Eu3+, respectively. It is observed that a significant quenching of Eu3+ emission was observed under 230 nm excitation when Bi3+ was co-doped. On the other hand, upon 350 nm excitation, the luminescent intensity of Eu3+ ions was enhanced by incorporation of Bi3+ (5 mol%) ions. The introduction of Bi3+ ions broadened the excitation band of Eu3+ of which a new strong band occurred ranging from 320 to 380 nm. This has been attributed to the 6s(2)-> 6s6p transition of Bi3+ ions, implying a very efficient energy transfer from Bi3+ ions to Eu3+ ions. The gamma radiation response of Gd2O3:Eu3+ exhibited a dosimetrically useful glow peak at 380A degrees C. Using thermoluminescence glow peaks, the trap parameters have been evaluated and discussed. The observed emission characteristics and energy transfer indicate that Gd2O3:Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphors have promising applications in solid-state lighting.

We report the synthesis of trigonal and tetragonal phase GeO2 films/microrods from a Ge wafer/powder by thermal oxidation. Both trigonal and tetragonal GeO2 exhibit excitation-dependent luminescence. Trigonal GeO2 exhibits strong green luminescence while tetragonal GeO2 exhibits strong blue luminescence when excited with ultra-violet light. Yellow-red luminescence is observed when both the phases are excited with green light. The emission wavelength varies almost linearly with the excitation wavelength both for trigonal and tetragonal GeO2. The variation is significant in the case of tetragonal GeO2, indicating a potential wavelength converter material.

CaTiO3:Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) nanophosphors were successfully synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method LCS]. The structural and morphological properties of the phosphors were studied by using Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM studies indicate that the size of the phosphor is similar to 20-35 nm. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) doped CaTiO3 for NUV excitation (407 nm) was studied in order to investigate the possibility of its use in White light emitting diode (WLED) applications. The emission spectra consists of intra 4f transitions of Sm3+, such as (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(5/2) (561 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(7/2) (601-611 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(9/2) (648 nm) and (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(11/2) (703 nm) respectively. Further, the emission at 601-611 nm show strong orange-red emission and can be applied to the orange-red emission of phosphor for the application for near ultra violet (NUV) excitation. Thermoluminescence (TL) of the samples irradiated with gamma source in the dose range 100-500 Gy was recorded at a heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). Two well resolved glow peaks at 164 degrees C and 214 degrees C along with shouldered peak at 186 degrees C were recorded. TL intensity increases up to 300 Gy and thereafter, it decreases with further increase of dose. The kinetic parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics were estimated and results were discussed in detail. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Combustion synthesized tetragonal ZrO2: Eu3+ nanophosphors: Structural and photoluminescence studies
Resumo:
Novel crystalline tetragonal ZrO2: Eu3+ phosphors were prepared by a facile and efficient low temperature solution combustion method at 400 +/- 10 degrees C using oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as fuel. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns and Rietveld confinement of as formed ZrO2: Eu3+ (1-11 mol%) confirmed the presence of body centered tetragonal phase. The crystallite size estimated from Scherrer's and W-H plots was found to be in the range of 7-17 nm. These results were in good agreement with transmission electron microscopy studies. The calculated microstrain in most of the planes indicated the presence of tensile stress along various planes of the particles. The observed space group (P4(2)/nmc) revealed the presence of cations in the 2b positions (0.75, 0.25, 0.25) and the anions in the 4d positions (0.25, 0.25, 0.45). The optical band gap energies estimated from Wood and Tauc's relation was found to be in the range 4.3-4.7 eV. Photoluminescence (PL) emission was recorded under 394 and 464 nm excitation shows an intense emission peak at 605 nm along with other emission peaks at 537, 592, 605 and 713 nm. These emission peaks were attributed to the transition of D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3) of Eu3+ ions. The high ratio of Intensity of (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) and (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) infers that Eu3+ occupies sites with a low symmetry and without an inversion center. CIE color coordinates indicated the red regions which could meet the needs of illumination devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of scheelite-type Eu3+-activated CaMoO4 phosphors were synthesized by the nitrate-citrate gel combustion method. All the compounds crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). FESEM results reveal the spherical-like morphology. The CaMoO4 phosphor exhibited broad emission centered at 500 nm under the excitation of 298 nm wavelength, while Eu3+-activated CaMoO4 shows an intense characteristic red emission peak at 615 nm at different excitation wavelengths, due to D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ions. The intensities of transitions between different J levels depend on the symmetry of the local environment of Eu3+ ions and were estimated using the Judd-Ofelt analysis. The high asymmetric ratio revealed that Eu3+ occupies sites with a low symmetry and without an inversion center. The CIE chromaticity co-ordinates (x, y) were calculated from emission spectra, and the values were close to the NTSC standard. Therefore, the present phosphor is highly useful for LEDs applications.

Scheelite-type MWO4 (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba) nanophosphors were synthesized by the precipitation method. All compounds crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group 141/a (No. 88). Scherrer's and TEM results revealed that the average crystallite size varies from 32 to 55 nm. FE-SEM illustrate the spherical (CaWO4), bouquet (SrWO4), and fish (BaWO4) like morphologies. PL spectra indicate the broad emission peak maximum at 436 (CaWO4), 440 (SrWO4), and 433 nm (BaWO4) under UV excitation. The calculated CIE color coordinates of MWO4 nanophosphors are close to the commercial BAM and National Television System Committee blue phosphor. The photocatalytic activities of MWO4 were investigated for the degradation of methylene blue dye under UV illumination. At pH 3, BaWO4 nanocatalyst showed 100% dye degradation within 60 min. The photocatalytic activity was in the decreasing order of BaWO4> CaWO4>SrWO4 under both neutral and acidic conditions. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Stolzite polymorph of PbWO4 catalyst was prepared by the facile room temperature precipitation method. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld analysis using powder X-ray data. PbWO4 was crystallized in the scheelite-type tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed leaf like morphology. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit broad blue emission (425 nm) under the excitation of 356 nm. The photocatalytic degradation of Methylene blue, Rhodamine B and Methyl orange dyes were measured under visible illumination. The 100% dye degradation was observed for MB and RhB dyes within 60 and 105 min. The rate constant was found to be in the decreasing order of MB > RhB > MO which followed the 1st order kinetic mechanism. Therefore, PbWO4 can be a potential candidate for blue component in white LEDs and also acts as a catalyst for the treatment of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants in water. We report, for the first time, the photoluminescence properties of Eu3+-doped LiNa3P2O7 phosphor, synthesized by a facile solid-state reaction method in air atmosphere. The crystal structure and phase purity of the phosphors were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Orthorhombic structural morphology was identified by scanning electron microscopy. The phosphate groups in the phosphor were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared analysis. Bandgap of the phosphor was calculated from the diffuse reflectance spectra data using Kubelka-Munk function. Under 395-nm UV excitation, the phosphors show signs of emitting red color due to the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. In accordance with Judd-Ofelt theory, spectroscopic parameters such as oscillator intensity parameter Omega(t) (t = 2), spontaneous emission probabilities, fluorescence branching ratios and radiative lifetimes were calculated and analyzed for the first time in this system.

A novel possibility to determine the temperature, density and velocity simultaneously in gas flows by measuring the average value, amplitude of modulation and phase shift of the photoluminescence excited by a temporally or spatially modulated light source is investigated. Time-dependent equations taking the flow, diffusion, excitation and decay into account are solved analytically. Different experimental arrangements are proposed. Measurements of velocity with two components, and temporal and spatial resolutions in the measurements are investigated. Numerical examples are given for N z with biacetyl as the seed gas. Practical considerations for the measurements and the relation between this method and some existing methods of lifetime measurement are discussed.

Nonequilibrium spin distributions in single GaAs/AlGaAs core-shell nanowires are excited using resonant polarized excitation at 10 K. At all excitation energies, we observe strong photoluminescence polarization due to suppressed radiative recombination of excitons with dipoles aligned perpendicular to the nanowire. Excitation resonances are observed at 1- or 2-LO phonon energies above the exciton ground states. Using rate equation modeling, we show that, at the lowest energies, strongly nonequilibrium spin distributions are present and we estimate their spin relaxation rate.

E2SiO5 thin films were fabricated on Si substrate by reactive magnetron sputtering method with subsequent annealing treatment. The morphology properties of as-deposited films have been studied by scanning electron microscope. The fraction of erbium is estimated to be 23.5 at% based on Rutherford backscattering measurement in as-deposited Er-Si-O film. X-ray diffraction measurement revealed that Er2SiO5 crystalline structure was formed as sample treated at 1100 degrees C for 1 h in O-2 atmosphere. Through proper thermal treatment, the 1.53 mu m Er3+-related emission intensity can be enhanced by a factor of 50 with respect to the sample annealed at 800 degrees C. Analysis of pump-power dependence of Er3+ PL intensity indicated that the upconversion phenomenon could be neglected even under a high photon flux of 10(21) (photons/cm(2)/sec). Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) of Er2SiO5 was studied and showed a weak thermal quenching factor of 2. Highly efficienct photoluminescence of Er2SiO5 films has been demonstrated with Er3+ concentration of 10(22)/cm(3), and it opens a promising way towards future Si-based light source for Si photonics. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity enhancement and suppression mechanism on surface plasmons (SPs) coupling with InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) have been systematically studied. The SP-QW coupling behaviors in the areas of GaN cap layer coated with silver thin film were compared at different temperatures and excitation powers. It is found that the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the light emitting diodes (LEDs) varies with temperature and excitation power, which in turn results in anomalous emission enhancement and suppression tendency related to SP-QW coupling. The observation is explained by the balance between the extraction efficiency of SPs and the IQE of LEDs

Tensile-strained GaAsP/GaInP single quantum well (QW) laser diode (I-D) structures have been grown by low-pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD) and related photoluminescence (PL) properties have been investigated in detail. The samples have the same well thickness of 16 nm but different P compositions in a GaAsP QW. Two peaks in room temperature (RT) PL spectra are observed for samples with a composition larger than 0.10. Temperature and excitation-power-dependent PL spectra have been measured for a sample with it P composition of 0.15. It is found that the two peaks have a 35 meV energy separation independent of temperature and only the low-energy peak exists below 85 K. Additionally, both peak intensities exhibit a monotonous increase as excitation power increases. Analyses indicate that the two peaks arise from the intrinsic-exciton recombination mechanisms of electron-heavy hole (e-hh) and electron-light hole (e-hh). A theoretical calculation based oil model-solid theory, taking, into account the spin-orbit splitting energy, shows good agreement with our experimental results. The temperature dependence of PL intensity ratio is well explained using the spontaneous emission theory for e-hh and e-hh transitions. front which the ratio can be characterized mainly by the energy separation between the fill and Ill states.
