Literature mentions propyl gallate (PG) as a non-toxic synthetic antioxidant that can be used as a food additive due to its high tolerance to heat. It is important to understand the thermal properties and to identify the decomposition products of this substance, since it has been reported to be thermally stable at temperatures as high as 300 C. Simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry-photovisual (DSC-photovisual), coupled thermogravimetry-infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) analyses and spectroscopic techniques were used to study the food additive PG. The TG-DTA curves, which were performed with the aid of DSC-photovisual, provided information concerning the thermal stability and decomposition profiles of the compound. From the TG-FTIR coupled techniques, it was possible to identify n-propanol as a possible volatile compound released during the thermal decomposition of the antioxidant. A complete spectroscopic characterization in the ultraviolet, visible, near and middle infrared regions was performed in order to understand the spectroscopic properties of PG.

Optical and structural properties of planar and channel waveguides based on sol gel Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped SiO2-ZrO2 are reported. Microstructured channels with high homogeneous surface profile were written onto the surface of multilayered densified films deposited on SiO2/Si substrates by a femtosecond laser etching technique. The densification of the planar waveguides was evaluated from changes in the refractive index and thickness, with full densification being achieved at 900 degrees C after annealing from 23 up to 500 min, depending on the ZrO2 content Crystal nucleation and growth took place together with densification, thereby producing transparent glass ceramic planar waveguides containing rare earth-doped ZrO2 nanocrystals dispersed in a silica-based glassy host Low roughness and crack-free surface as well as high confinement coefficient were achieved for all the compositions. Enhanced NIR luminescence of the Er3+ ions was observed for the Yb3+- codoped planar waveguides, denoting an efficient energy transfer from the Yb3+ to the Er3+ ion. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Inclusion compounds of Al-quercetin and Al-catechin complexes with beta-cyclodextrin (beta CD) were investigated. The complex and the inclusion compound of quercetin are more effective DPPHaEuro cent scavengers than the corresponding catechin compounds and the inclusion does not compromise their scavenging abilities, with only a slight decrease in the EC50 values. This is in accordance with the electrochemical data, which revealed that the inclusion compounds have lower diffusion coefficients in aqueous solution than the non-included compounds. For the quercetin compounds, some spectroscopic properties were also addressed by means of UV-visible and NMR measurements in aqueous media.

The work described in this thesis revolves around the 1,1,n,ntetramethyl[n](2,11)teropyrenophanes, which are a series of [n]cyclophanes with a severely bent, board-shaped polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The thesis is divided into seven Chapters. The first Chapter conatins an overview of the seminal work on [n]cyclophanes of the first two members of the capped rylene series of PAHs: benzene and pyrene. Three different general strategies for the synthesis of [n]cyclophanes are discussed and this leads in to a discussion of some slected syntheses of [n]paracyclopahnes and [n](2,7)pyrenophanes. The chemical, structural, spectroscopic and photophysical properties of these benzene and pyrene-derived cyclophanes are discussed with emphasis on the changes that occur with changes in the structure of the aromatic system. Chapter 1 concludes with a brief introduction to [n]cyclophanes of the fourth member of the capped rylene series of PAHs: teropyrene. The focus of the work described in Chapter 2 is the synthesis of of 1,1,n,ntetramethyl[n](2,11)teropyrenophane (n = 6 and 7) using a double-McMurry strategy. While the synthesis 1,1,7,7-tetramethyl[7](2,11)teropyrenophane was successful, the synthesis of the lower homologue 1,1,6,6-tetramethyl[6](2,11)teropyrenophane was not. The conformational behaviour of [n.2]pyrenophanes was also studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy and this provided a conformation-based rationale for the failure of the synthesis of 1,1,6,6-tetramethyl[6](2,11)teropyrenophane. Chapter 3 contains details of the synthesis of 1,1,n,n-tetramethyl[n](2,11)teropyrenophanes (n = 7-9) using a Wurtz / McMurry strategy, which proved to be more general than the double McMurry strategy. The three teropyrenophanes were obtained in ca. 10 milligram quantities. Trends in the spectroscopic properties that accompany changes in the structure of the teropyrene system are discussed. A violation of Kashas rule was observed when the teropyrenophanes were irradiated at 260 nm. The work described in the fourth Chapter concentrates on the development of gram-scale syntheses of 1,1,n,n-tetramethyl[n](2,11)teropyrenophanes (n = 710) using the Wurtz / McMurry strategy. Several major modifications to the orginal synthetic pathway had to be made to enable the first several steps to be performed comfortably on tens of grams of material. Solubility problems severely limited the amount of material that could be produced at a late stage of the synthetic pathways leading to the evennumbered members of the series (n = 8, 10). Ultimately, only 1,1,9,9- tetramethyl[9](2,11)teropyrenophane was synthesized on a multi-gram scale. In the final step in the synthesis, a valence isomerization / dehydrogenation (VID) reaction, the teropyrenophane was observed to become unstable under the conditions of its formation at n = 8. The synthesis of 1,1,10,10-tetramethyl[10](2,11)teropyrenophane was achieved for the first time, but only on a few hundred milligram scale. In Chapter 5, the results of an investigation of the electrophilic aromatic bromination of the 1,1,n,n-tetramethyl[n](2,11)teropyrenophanes (n = 710) are presented. Being the most abundant cyclophane, most of the work was performed on 1,1,9,9-tetramethyl[9](2,11)teropyrenophane. Reaction of this compound with varying amounts of of bromine revealed that bromination occurs most rapidly at the symmetryrelated 4, 9, 13 and 18 positions (teropyrene numbering) and that the 4,9,13,18- tetrabromide could be formed exclusively. Subsequent bromination occurs selectively on the symmetry-related 6, 7, 15 and 16 positions (teropyrene numbering), but considerably more slowly. Only mixtures of penta-, hexa-, hepta and octabromides could be formed. Bromination reactions of the higher and lower homologues (n = 7, 8 and 10) revealed that the reactivity of the teropyrene system increased with the degree of bend. Crystal structures of some tetra-, hexa-, hepta- and octa-brominated products were obtained. The goal of the work described in Chapter 6 is to use 1,1,9,9- tetramethyl[9](2,11)teropyrenophane as a starting material for the synthesis of warped nanographenophanes. A bromination, Suzuki-Miyaura, cyclodehydrogenation sequence was unsuccessful, as was a CH arylation / cyclodehydrogenation approach. Itamis recently-developed K-region-selective annulative -extension (APEX) reaction proved to be successful, affording a giant [n]cyclophane with a C84 PAH. Attempted bay-region Diels-Alder reactions and some cursory host-guest chemistry of teropyrenophanes are also discussed. In Chapter 7 a synthetic approach toward a planar model compound, 2,11-di-tbutylteropyrene, is described. The synthesis could not be completed owing to solubility problems at the end of the synthetic pathway.

This work focus on the influence of solvent on the photophysical properties of chlorophyll α and pheophytin. Both compounds are related to the photosynthesis process and are considered prototypes of photosensitizers in Photodynamic Therapy. Fluorescence measurements were developed using water/ethanol mixtures at different compositions, since both solvents could be employed in biological applications. The spectroscopic properties of these compounds undergo profound changes depending on water content in the ethanol due to auto-aggregation processes. The major hydrophobicity and the lower dielectric constant of ethanol when compared with water precluded significantly the auto-aggregation process of these compounds.

It is reported in this work the preparation, characterisation and photoluminescence study of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) thin films co-doped with [Eu(tta)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] and [Tb(acac)(3)(H(2)O)(3)] complexes. Both the composition and excitation wavelength may be tailored to fine-tune the emission properties of these Ln(3+)-beta-diketonate doped polymer films, exhibiting green and red primary colours, as well as intermediate colours. In addition to the ligand-Ln(3+) intramolecular energy transfer, it is observed an unprecedented intermolecular energy transfer process from the (5)D(4) emitting level of the Tb(3+) ion to the excited triplet state T(1) of the tta ligand coordinated to the Eu(3+) ion. The PMMA polymer matrix acts as a co-sensitizer and enhances the overall luminescence intensity of the polymer films. Furthermore, it provides considerable UV protection for the luminescent species and improves the photostability of the doped system.

The low-lying doublet and quartet electronic states of the species SeF correlating with the first dissociation channel are investigated theoretically at a high-level of electronic correlation treatment, namely, the complete active space self-consistent field/multireference single and double excitations configuration interaction (CASSCF/MRSDCI) using a quintuple-zeta quality basis set including a relativistic effective core potential for the selenium atom. Potential energy curves for (Lambda+S) states and the corresponding spectroscopic properties are derived that allows for an unambiguous assignment of the only spectrum known experimentally as due to a spin-forbidden X (2)Pi-a (4)Sigma(-) transition, and not a A (2)Pi-X (2)Pi transition as assumed so far. For the bound excited doublets, yet unknown experimentally, this study is the first theoretical characterization of their spectroscopic properties. Also the spin-orbit coupling constant function for the X (2)Pi state is derived as well as the spin-orbit coupling matrix element between the X (2)Pi and a (4)Sigma(-) states. Dipole moment functions and vibrationally averaged dipole moments show SeF to be a very polar species. An overview of the lowest-lying spin-orbit (Omega) states completes this description. A variety of nanostructures are being investigated as functional drug carriers for treatment of a wide range of diseases, most notably cardiovascular defects, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. The aim of this present contribution is to evaluate potentially applicable nanomaterials in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer due to their photophysical and photobiological properties and complexation behavior. The delivery systems consisted of chloro-aluminum phthalocyanine associated with beta-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin. The preparation of the complex and its stoichiometry in an ethanol/buffer (3:1) solution were studied by spectroscopic techniques, which were defined as 1:2. The inclusion complex in the nanometer scale was observed on the basis of changes to the spectroscopic properties. The singlet oxygen production and complex photophysical parameters were determined by measuring luminescence at 1270 nm and by steady state and time resolved spectroscopic, respectively. The preparation of the complex was tested and analyzed with regard to cellular damage by visible light activation. The inclusion complex showed a higher singlet oxygen quantum yield compared with other systems and other photoactive dyes. There was also a reduction in the fluorescence quantum yield compared with the results obtained for zinc phthalocyanine in organic medium. The results reported clearly that the inclusion complex chloro-aluminum phthalocyanine/cyclodextrin showed some changes in its spectroscopy properties leading to better biodistribution and biocompatibility with a potential application in photodynamic therapy, especially in the case of neoplasy. Additionally, it also has non-oncological applications as a drug delivery system.

We investigated three amino derivatives of ortho-aminobenzoic or anthranilic acid (o-Abz): a) 2-Amino-benzamide (AbzNH(2)); b) 2-Amino-N-methyl-benzamide (AbzNHCH(3)) and c) 2-Amino-N-N`-dimethyl-bezamide (AbzNH(CH(3))(2)), see Scheme 1. We describe the results of ab-initio calculations on the structural characteristics of the compounds and experimental studies about solvent effects in their absorption and steady-state and time-resolved emission properties. Ab-initio calculations showed higher stability for the rotameric conformation in which the oxygen of carbonyl is near to the nitrogen of ortho-amino group. The derivatives present decrease in the delocalization of pi electron, and absorption bands are blue shifted compared to the parent compound absorption, the extent of the effect increasing from to Abz-NH(2) to Abz-NHCH(3) Abz-NH(CH(3))(2). Measurements performed in several solvents have shown that the the dependence of Stokes shift of the derivatives with the orientational polarizability follows the Onsager-Lippert model for general effects of solvent. However deviation occurred in solvents with properties of Bronsted acids, or electron acceptor characteristics, so that hydrogen bonds formed with protic solvents predominates over intramolecular hydrogen bond. In most solvents the fluorescence decay of AbzNH(2) and AbzNHCH(3) was fitted to a single exponential with lifetimes around 7.0 ns and no correlation with polarity of the solvent was observed. The fluorescence decay of AbzN(CH(3))(2) showed lifetimes around 2.0 ns, consistent with low quantum yield of the compound. The spectroscopic properties of the monoamino derivative AbzNHCH(3) are representative of the properties presented by Abz labelled peptides and fatty acids previously studied.

The synthesis, spectroscopic properties, and chemical reactions of the stable (neopentylimino)-, (mesitylimino)-, and (o-tert-butylphenylimino)propadienones (6) are reported. Nucleophilic addition of amines affords the malonic amidoamidines 7 and 8. 3,5-Dimethylpyrazole reacts analogously to form 9b. Addition of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine produces pyrazolinones 10-12. Addition of N,Y'-dimethyldiaminoethane, -propane, and -butane gives diazepine, diazocine, and diazonine derivatives 13-15, respectively (X-ray structures of 13c, 14a, and 15a are available). The mesoionic pyridopyrimidinium olates IS are obtained by addition of 2-(methylamino)pyridine (X-ray structure of 18b available). Primary 2-aminopyridines afford the pyridopyrimidininones 20-29 and 31 (X-ray structure of 21a available), and 2-aminopyrimidines and 2-aminopyrazine afford pyrimidopyrimidinones and pyrazinopyrimidinones 33-35. Pyrimidoisoquinolinone 36 results from 1-aminoisoquinoline and pyridoquinolinone 40 from 8-aminoquinoline. 2-Aminothiazoline and 2-aminothiazole afford thiazolopyrimidinone derivatives 41-43 (X-ray structure of 43a available).
