Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and complex impedance spectroscopy have been used to study gelatin-based polymer electrolytes plasticized with glycerol and containing lithium perchlorate. The studied samples were prepared with salt concentration of 7.9 wt% and 10.3 wt%. Ionic conductivity of about 10(-5) S/cm was obtained at room temperature for both samples. Lithium (Li-7) and proton (H-1) lineshapes and spin-lattice relaxation times were measured as a function of temperature. The Li-7 NMR relaxation results indicate that the ionic mobility in this system is comparable to those found in other plasticized polymer electrolytes.

This work describes the covalent grafting of 3,4,9,10-perylenediimides (PDI), which are fluorescent dyes with very interesting optical properties, onto the walls of mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and SBA-15. The mesoporous materials were first treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in anhydrous toluene, generating amine-containing surfaces. The amine-containing materials were then reacted with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCA), generating surface-grafted PDI. Infrared spectra of the materials showed that the reaction with amino groups took place at both anhydride ends of the PTCA molecule, resulting in surface attached diimides. No sign of unreacted anhydride groups were found. The new materials, designated as MCMN2PDI and SBAN(2)PDI, presented absorption and emission spectra corresponding to weakly coupled PDI chromophores, in contrast to the strongly coupled rings usually found in solid PDI samples. The materials showed a red fluorescence, which could be observed by the naked eye under UV irradiation or with a fluorescence microscope. The PDI-modified mesoporous materials showed electrical conductivity when pressed into a pellet. The results presented here show that the new materials are potentially useful in the design of nanowires. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The viscosity of ionic liquids based on quaternary ammonium cations is reduced when one of the alkyl chains is replaced by an alkoxy chain (Zhou et al. Chem. Eur. J. 2005, 11, 752.). A microscopic picture of the role played by the ether function in decreasing the viscosity of quaternary ammonium ionic liquids is provided here by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A model for the ionic liquid N-ethyl-N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, MOENM(2)E TFSI, is compared to the tetraalky-lammonium counterpart. The alkoxy derivative has lower viscosity, higher ionic diffusion coefficients, and higher conductivity than the tetraalkyl system at the same density and temperature. A clear signature of the ether function on the liquid structure is observed in cation-cation correlations, but not in anion-anion or anion-cation correlations. In both the alkyl and the alkoxy ionic liquids, there is aggregation of long chains of neighboring cations within micelle-like structures. The MD simulations indicate that the less effective assembly between the more flexible alkoxy chains, in comparison to alkyl chains, is the structural reason for higher ionic mobility in MOENM(2)E TFSI.

Ten anionic compounds, including four acidic dyes, were used to dope polypyrrole powder. The effects of the dopants on density, optical absorption and conductivity of the polypyrroles were studied. The presence of the dopant in the conducting polymer matrix was verified by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Density function theory (DFT) simulation was used to understand the effect of the dopants on the solid structure, optical absorption and energy band structures. Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid-doped polypyrrole yielded the highest conductivity. The dye-doped polypyrrole showed an enhancement in its UV–vis optical absorption.

A series of new electrolyte materials based on a molecular plastic crystal doped by different iodide salts together with iodine have been prepared and characterized by thermal analysis, ionic conductivity, electrochemical and solid-state NMR diffusion measurements. In these materials, the plastic crystal phase of succinonitrile acts as a good matrix for the quaternary ammonium based iodides and iodine and appears to act in some cases as a solid-state “solvent” for the binary dopants. The materials were prepared by mixing the components in the molten state with subsequent cooling into the plastic crystalline state. This resulted in waxy-solid electrolytes in the temperature range from − 40 to 60 °C. The combination of structural variation of the cations, and fast redox couple diffusion (comparable with liquid-based electrolytes), as well as a high ionic conductivity of up to 3 × 10− 3 S cm− 1 at ambient temperature, make these materials very attractive for potential use in solid-state photoelectrochemical cells.

NMR provides a tool whereby the dynamic properties of specific nuclei can be investigated. In the present study, a poly(ethylene oxide-co-propylene oxide) network has been used as the polymer host to prepare solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) containing either LiClO4 or LiCF3SO3. In addition, a low molecular weight plasticizer [propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl formamide (DMF) or tetraglyme] has been added to several of the samples to enhance the mobility of the polymer and, thus, of the ionic species. The effects of plasticizer and salt concentration on the ionic structure and mobility in these SPEs, as measured by NMR relaxation times, and correlation to the conductivity behaviour in these systems are discussed. Temperature dependent triflate diffusion coefficients, as measured by Pulsed Field Gradient 19F-NMR, in plasticized SPEs are also reported.

Ambient temperature conductive plastic crystal phases of alkylmethylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonyl amide (TFSA) salts are studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to examine the role of vacancy size and concentration in conductivity. The ethyl methylpyrrolidinium TFSA salt (P12 TFSA) has larger vacancies and a greater concentration of vacancies than the dimethylpyrrolidinium TFSA salt (P11 TFSA) over the temperature range investigated. The relative vacancy size and concentration vary with temperature and reflect the solid–solid transitions as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). P12 TFSA has greater conductivity than P11 TFSA and has furthermore been observed to exhibit slip planes at room temperature. P12 TFSA has greater entropy changes associated with solid–solid phase transitions below the melting point than P11 TFSA possibly indicating greater rotational freedom in P12 TFSA. These results support the notion that the diffusion, conduction, and plastic flow properties of the pyrrolidinium TFSA salts are derived from the lattice vacancies.

Doping of lithium salts and acids into the plastic crystal phase of succinonitrile has shown for the first time of the possibility of creating solid state electrolytes based on plastic crystalline solvents where the matrix itself is neutral and hence not intrinsically conductive. These materials illustrate the concept of a solid state electrolyte solvent. Room temperature conductivities up to 3.4×10−4 S cm−1 were obtained with 5 wt.% lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonylamide) in succinonitrile. Pulsed field gradient NMR measurements indicate that both cation and anion are mobile in this lattice. Proton conductivity was also observed when methane sulfonic acid or glacial acetic acid was used as dopants, however, the conductivity in these systems is limited by the poor dissociating ability of these acids.

Model systems of sodium iodide dissolved in dimethyl ether or 1,2-dimethoxyethane (glyme) were studied in order to investigate the structural and dynamic properties of ionic solutions in small and polymeric ethers. Full molecular dynamics simulations were performed at a range of different salt concentrations. An algorithm was designed which assigns ions to clusters and then calculates all the terms which contribute to ionic conductivity. In dilute solutions, free ions are the most common ionic species, followed by ion pairs. As the concentration increases, pairs become the most common species, with significant concentrations of clusters with 3 through 6 ions. Changing the solvent from dimethyl ether to glyme significantly decreases the ion clustering due to the chelate effect in which the two oxygens on a solvent stabilize an associated cation. The conductivity in stable systems is shown to be primarily the result of the movement of free ions and the relative movement of ions within neutral pairs. The Nernst-Einstein relation, commonly used in the discussion of polymer electrolytes, is shown to be inadequate to quantitatively describe conductivity in the model systems.

N,N,N,N-Tetramethylammonium dicyanamide (Me4NDCA) has been examined via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, conductivity, single crystal X-ray diffraction and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses, and was found to be highly conductive in the solid state (σ =10−3 S cm−2 at 420 K) and to also exhibit unusual plastic crystal behaviour. To investigate the correlation between such behaviour and the occurrence of molecular rotations in the crystal, 1H NMR second moment measurements are compared with calculated values predicted from the crystal structure. While DSC analysis indicates a number of solid–solid transitions at ambient temperatures, subsequent 1H NMR analysis of the Me4N+ cation shows that a variety of rotational motions become active at low (<240 K) temperatures, and that such transitions in rotational states occur over a range of temperatures rather than in a sharp transition. Conductivity analysis reveals that between 320 K and 420 K the conductivity increases by more than six orders of magnitude in the solid state, in line with the transition of the Me4N+ cation to a diffusive state, and that other phase transitions observed in this temperature range have no marked effect on the conductivity. Conduction in this solid state is therefore envisaged to involve a vacancy-diffusion model, involving Me4N+ cation vacancies.

In order to explore the various possible property trends in ionic liquid mixtures, five different ionic liquids were mixed with N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C3mpyr][NTf2]), and the viscosities, excess molar volumes, ionic conductivities, and phase diagrams of the mixtures were determined over a range of temperatures. In a number of the mixtures the crystallization of both components was completely suppressed and no melting point was observable. Such mixtures of similar ionic liquids thus have potential for use in low-temperature applications by extending the liquid range to Tg. The molar conductivities and viscosities are described as approximating predictable or “simple” mixing behaviors, while excess molar volumes were found to show a variety of mixing and nonideal mixing effects. Mixture equations for viscosity and conductivity are discussed and analyzed. An immiscibility window was observed in the trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([P6,6,6,14][NTf2]) in the [C3mpyr][NTf2] system in the [C3mpyr][NTf2]-rich region. Unusual physical properties are exhibited by miscible compositions near the demixing line. These compositions are described as [P6,6,6,14][NTf2]-like, even up to 0.5 mol fraction of [C3mpyr][NTf2].

A simplified wet-spinning process for the production of continuous poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) fibers is reported. Conductivity enhancement of PEDOT:PSS fibers up to 223 S cm−1 has been demonstrated when these fibers are exposed to ethylene glycol as a post-synthesis processing step. In a new spinning approach it is shown that by employing a spinning formulation consisting of an aqueous blend of PEDOT:PSS and poly(ethlylene glycol), the need for post-spinning treatment with ethylene glycol is eliminated. With this approach, 30-fold conductivity enhancements from 9 to 264 S cm−1 are achieved with respect to an untreated fiber. This one-step approach also demonstrates a significant enhancement in the redox properties of the fibers. These improvements are attributed to an improved molecular ordering of the PEDOT chains in the direction of the fiber axis and the consequential enrichment of linear (or expanded-coil like) conformation to preference bipolaronic electronic structures as evidenced by Raman spectroscopy, solid-state electron spin resonance (ESR) and in situ electrochemical ESR studies.

In the present work, electrospinnability as well as thermal, rheological, and morphological characteristics of low molecular weight hardwood organosolv lignin, as a potential precursor for carbon fiber, was investigated. Submicromter biobased fibers were electrospun from a wide range of polymer solutions with different ratios of organosolv lignin to polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Rheological studies were conducted by measuring viscosity, surface tension, and electrical conductivity of hybrid polymer solutions, and used to correlate electrospinning behavior of solutions with the morphology of the resultant electrospun composite fibers. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, the solutions that led to the formation of bead-free uniform fibers were found. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis revealed that lignin-based fibers enjoy higher decomposition temperatures than that of pure PAN. Thermal stability of the lignin-based fibers was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicating a high carbon yield of above 50% at 600 °C, which is highly crucial in the production of low-cost carbon fiber. It was also observed that organosolv lignin synergistically affects thermal decomposition of composite fibers. A significant lower activation energy was found for the pyrolysis of lignin-derived electrospun fibers compared to that of pure PAN.

In this dissertation, the theoretical principles governing the molecular modeling were applied for electronic characterization of oligopeptide α3 and its variants (5Q, 7Q)-α3, as well as in the quantum description of the interaction of the aminoglycoside hygromycin B and the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosome. In the first study, the linear and neutral dipeptides which make up the mentioned oligopeptides were modeled and then optimized for a structure of lower potential energy and appropriate dihedral angles. In this case, three subsequent geometric optimization processes, based on classical Newtonian theory, the semi-empirical and density functional theory (DFT), explore the energy landscape of each dipeptide during the search of ideal minimum energy structures. Finally, great conformers were described about its electrostatic potential, ionization energy (amino acids), and frontier molecular orbitals and hopping term. From the hopping terms described in this study, it was possible in subsequent studies to characterize the charge transport propertie of these peptides models. It envisioned a new biosensor technology capable of diagnosing amyloid diseases, related to an accumulation of misshapen proteins, based on the conductivity displayed by proteins of the patient. In a second step of this dissertation, a study carried out by quantum molecular modeling of the interaction energy of an antibiotic ribosomal aminoglicosídico on your receiver. It is known that the hygromycin B (hygB) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that affects ribosomal translocation by direct interaction with the small subunit of the bacterial ribosome (30S), specifically with nucleotides in helix 44 of the 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA). Due to strong electrostatic character of this connection, it was proposed an energetic investigation of the binding mechanism of this complex using different values of dielectric constants (ε = 0, 4, 10, 20 and 40), which have been widely used to study the electrostatic properties of biomolecules. For this, increasing radii centered on the hygB centroid were measured from the 30S-hygB crystal structure (1HNZ.pdb), and only the individual interaction energy of each enclosed nucleotide was determined for quantum calculations using molecular fractionation with conjugate caps (MFCC) strategy. It was noticed that the dielectric constants underestimated the energies of individual interactions, allowing the convergence state is achieved quickly. But only for ε = 40, the total binding energy of drug-receptor interaction is stabilized at r = 18A, which provided an appropriate binding pocket because it encompassed the main residues that interact more strongly with the hygB - C1403, C1404, G1405, A1493, G1494, U1495, U1498 and C1496. Thus, the dielectric constant ≈ 40 is ideal for the treatment of systems with many electrical charges. By comparing the individual binding energies of 16S rRNA nucleotides with the experimental tests that determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hygB, it is believed that those residues with high binding values generated bacterial resistance to the drug when mutated. With the same reasoning, since those with low interaction energy do not influence effectively the affinity of the hygB in its binding site, there is no loss of effectiveness if they were replaced.
