A review of spontaneous rupture in thin films with tangentially immobile interfaces is presented that emphasizes the theoretical developments of film drainage and corrugation growth through the linearization of lubrication theory in a cylindrical geometry. Spontaneous rupture occurs when corrugations from adjacent interfaces become unstable and grow to a critical thickness. A corrugated interface is composed of a number of waveforms and each waveform becomes unstable at a unique transition thickness. The onset of instability occurs at the maximum transition thickness, and it is shown that only upper and lower bounds of this thickness can be predicted from linear stability analysis. The upper bound is equivalent to the Freakel criterion and is obtained from the zeroth order approximation of the H-3 term in the evolution equation. This criterion is determined solely by the film radius, interfacial tension and Hamaker constant. The lower bound is obtained from the first order approximation of the H-3 term in the evolution equation and is dependent on the film thinning velocity A semi-empirical equation, referred to as the MTR equation, is obtained by combining the drainage theory of Manev et al. [J. Dispersion Sci. Technol., 18 (1997) 769] and the experimental measurements of Radoev et al. [J. Colloid Interface Sci. 95 (1983) 254] and is shown to provide accurate predictions of film thinning velocity near the critical thickness of rupture. The MTR equation permits the prediction of the lower bound of the maximum transition thickness based entirely on film radius, Plateau border radius, interfacial tension, temperature and Hamaker constant. The MTR equation extrapolates to Reynolds equation under conditions when the Plateau border pressure is small, which provides a lower bound for the maximum transition thickness that is equivalent to the criterion of Gumerman and Homsy [Chem. Eng. Commun. 2 (1975) 27]. The relative accuracy of either bound is thought to be dependent on the amplitude of the hydrodynamic corrugations, and a semiempirical correlation is also obtained that permits the amplitude to be calculated as a function of the upper and lower bound of the maximum transition thickness. The relationship between the evolving theoretical developments is demonstrated by three film thickness master curves, which reduce to simple analytical expressions under limiting conditions when the drainage pressure drop is controlled by either the Plateau border capillary pressure or the van der Waals disjoining pressure. The master curves simplify solution of the various theoretical predictions enormously over the entire range of the linear approximation. Finally, it is shown that when the Frenkel criterion is used to assess film stability, recent studies reach conclusions that are contrary to the relevance of spontaneous rupture as a cell-opening mechanism in foams. The tribological response of multilayer micro/nanocrystalline diamond coatings grown by the hot filament CVD technique is investigated. These multigrade systems were tailored to comprise a starting microcrystalline diamond (MCD) layer with high adhesion to a silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic substrate, and a top nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) layer with reduced surface roughness. Tribological tests were carried out with a reciprocating sliding configuration without lubrication. Such composite coatings exhibit a superior critical load before delamination (130–200 N), when compared to the mono- (60–100 N) and bilayer coatings (110 N), considering ∼10 µm thick films. Regarding the friction behaviour, a short-lived initial high friction coefficient was followed by low friction regimes (friction coefficients between 0.02 and 0.09) as a result of the polished surfaces tailored by the tribological solicitation. Very mild to mild wear regimes (wear coefficient values between 4.1×10−8 and 7.7×10−7 mm3 N−1 m−1) governed the wear performance of the self-mated multilayer coatings when subjected to high-load short-term tests (60–200 N; 2 h; 86 m) and medium-load endurance tests (60 N; 16 h; 691 m).

Three different lubricating greases and their bleed and base oils were compared in terms of film thickness in a ball-on-disc test rig through optical interferometry. The theoretical values calculated according to Hamrock's equation are in close agreement with the base oil film thickness measurements, which validates the selected experimental methodology. The grease and bleed oil film thickness under fully flooded lubrication conditions presented quite similar behaviour and levels. Therefore, the grease film thickness under full film conditions might be predicted using their bleed oil properties, namely the viscosity and pressure-viscosity coefficient. The base and bleed oil lubricant parameter LP are proportional to the measured film thickness. A relationship between grease and the corresponding bleed oil film thickness was evidenced.

The reduction of the power loss generated in mechanical transmissions and the use of low friction biodegradable lubricants has been attracting considerable attention in recent times. Therefore, it is necessary to develop methods to test and evaluate the performance of such lubricants and compare them with conventional ones. In this sense, a Four-Ball Machine was modified allowing the test of rolling bearings. A 51107 thrust ball bearing was used to test two different greases and the corresponding base oils. Friction torque and operating temperatures were continuously monitored to quantify the power loss and the heat evacuation for each lubricant tested. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Thrust ball bearings lubricated with several different greases were tested on a modified Four-Ball Machine, where the Four-Ball arrangement was replaced by a bearing assembly. The friction torque and operating temperatures in a thrust ball bearing were measured during the tests. At the end of each test a grease sample was analyzed through ferrographic techniques in order to quantify and evaluate bearing wear. A rolling bearing friction torque model was used and the coefficient of friction in full film lubrication was determined for each grease, depending on the operating conditions. The experimental results obtained showed that grease formulation had a very significant influence on friction torque and operating temperature. The friction torque depends on the viscosity of the grease base oil, on its nature (mineral, ester, PAO, etc.), on the coefficient of friction in full film conditions, but also on the interaction between grease thickener and base oil, which affected contact replenishment and contact starvation, and thus influenced the friction torque.

Presentemente, com a economia cada vez mais globalizada e com a grande competitividade do mercado, as empresas de produção procuram cada vez mais ajustar-se às exigências dos clientes. Por esse motivo, o controlo do fluxo produtivo torna-se imprescindível para a resolução de problemas e para a própria melhoria contínua do processo. O sistema “Lean Manufacturing”, é um conjunto de atividades que tem como meta o aumento da capacidade de resposta às mudanças e à minimização dos desperdícios na produção, constituindo-se num verdadeiro empreendimento de gestão inovadora. O TPM – Total Productive Maintenance, é uma ferramenta de melhoria continua cada vez mais utilizada nas empresas com o objetivo de melhorar a eficiência dos seus equipamentos e atingir metas para a redução de desperdícios, incluindo a restauração e manutenção de condições padrão de funcionamento. O presente trabalho visa a implementação da ferramenta TPM num equipamento (Serrote Mecânico Alternativo) instalado no Laboratório das Oficinas Mecânicas do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto. No contexto prático, este trabalho consistiu numa primeira fase por implementar a ferramenta 5S´s no posto de trabalho do equipamento em estudo. Durante esta implementação foi possível detetar algumas anomalias no equipamento, tendo sido sujeitas a uma análise para encontrar as suas causas raiz. Posteriormente foi implementada a ferramenta TPM, de modo, a criar melhores condições de acesso e simplificação das atividades de inspeção, lubrificação e limpeza. Além disso, foi executado e proposto algumas oportunidades de melhoria em alguns elementos, de forma a reduzir tempos de operação e tempos de setup, contribuindo para o aumento da eficiência do equipamento.

Avarias em rolamentos são causas comuns de falhas em máquinas e equipamentos industriais. Portanto, é importante a aplicação de técnicas que permitam a deteção e a identificação do problema o mais cedo possível a fim de evitar a destruição do rolamento e consequente paragem da máquina. Logo, o processo de monitorização do estado dos rolamentos deve receber uma atenção especial no plano de manutenção de qualquer indústria. Este trabalho tem, assim, como principal objetivo a caracterização das partículas de desgaste provenientes de rolamentos através da análise dos seus lubrificantes por ferrometria e ferrografia analítica. Estas técnicas permitem identificar e caracterizar as várias partículas de desgaste presentes numa amostra de lubrificante, permitindo não só avaliar o grau de severidade do desgaste mas também identificar o tipo de desgaste predominante (fadiga, abrasão, corrosão,etc.), e até identificar os diferentes materiais das partículas que se podem associar a componentes específicos com falhas. A criação de uma base de dados para armazenar os resultados, os comentários e as informações mais importantes obtidos nos ensaios experimentais, assim como a análise de alguns casos práticos, foram também realizados no âmbito deste trabalho. Para desenvolver um conhecimento mais profundo sobre as técnicas utilizadas foi importante fazer uma análise aos diversos tipos de rolamentos, a sua lubrificação e as causas e tipos principais de avarias encontradas.

O processo de hidrofugação é definido como um tratamento efetuado com gorduras e agentes químicos, nomeadamente polímeros e acrílicos que dão características de lubrificação e propriedades hidrofóbicas ao material, cujas etapas são adicionadas na fase de recurtume. Um dos objetivos principais foi a obtenção de um couro com alto grau hidrofóbico, isto é um couro com baixo poder de absorção da água, resistência a sua penetração e conservação da permeabilidade ao vapor de água, sem a utilização do sal de crómio na fase de fixação, e mais pelas problemáticas ambientais que existem na atualidade com o uso deste metal no mundo dos couros. É de salientar que, o único parâmetro que foi possível analisar, de acordo com a disponibilidade do laboratório foi a percentagem de absorção da água. Portanto, para este trabalho escrito foram desenhadas uma série de ensaios, onde se testaram inúmeros produtos utilizados na indústria de produção dos couros, alterando-se fatores de temperatura, dosagem, posição dos produtos aplicados, tempos, entre outros parâmetros, de modo a obter um couro com melhores resultados na percentagem de absorção. A hidrofugação é um processo bastante delicado e mais quando se tenta produzir um couro isento de metais e com alto poder hidrofóbico. Os resultados obtidos experimentalmente apontam para uma percentagem de absorção de cerca de 30% para espaços de tempo de 10 minutos, utilizando sempre sais de alumínio na etapa de fixação, pelo que ainda se requer mais investigação para obter um couro wet-white sem adição de sais metálicas e com alto poder de absorção.

The occurrence of audible squeaking in some patients with ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) hip prostheses is a cause for concern. Considering multifactor contributing to this phenomenon, many studies have been conducted over the last decade. Great efforts have been put on understanding the mechanics of the hip squeaking to gain a deep insight into factors resulting in sound emission from hip articulation. Disruption of fluid-film lubrication and friction were reported as main potential causes of hip squeaking, while patient and surgical factors as well as design and material of hip implants were identified as affecting factors. This review article therefore summarised the recent available literature on this subject to provide a platform for future developments. Moreover, high wear rates and ceramic liner fracture as viable consequences of hip squeaking were discussed.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to estimate fecal, urinary incontinence, and sexual function 6 years after an obstetrical anal sphincter tear. METHODS: Among 13,213 women who had a vaginal delivery of a cephalic singleton at term, 196 women sustained an anal sphincter tear. They were matched to 588 controls. Validated questionnaires grading fecal and urinary incontinence, and sexual dysfunction were completed by the participants. RESULTS: Severe fecal incontinence was more frequently reported by women who had sustained an anal sphincter tear compared to the controls. Women with an anal sphincter tear had no increased risk of urinary incontinence, but reported significantly more pain, difficulty with vaginal lubrication, and difficulty achieving orgasm compared to the controls. A fetal occiput posterior position during childbirth was an independent risk factor for both severe urinary incontinence and severe sexual dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: Fecal incontinence is strongly associated with an anal sphincter tear. A fetal occiput posterior position represents a risk factor for urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction.

A la física o a l’enginyeria es defineix com fregament o fricció a la resistència que s'oposa a la rotació o al lliscament d'un cos sobre un altre, o també a la força que apareix en la superfície de contacte de dos cossos quan s'intenta lliscar un sobre un altre. El fregament ha estat fins avui dia un gran problema físic, això és degut a que genera imperfeccions, especialment microscòpiques, entre les superfícies en contacte. Aleshores és quan apareix la tribologia. La tribologia és la ciència que estudia la fricció, el desgast i la lubricació de superfícies en contacte. El lliscament entre superfícies sòlides es caracteritza generalment per un alt coeficient de fricció i un gran desgast a causa de les propietats específiques de lessuperfícies. La lubricació consisteix en la introducció d'una capa intermèdia d'un material aliè entre les superfícies en moviment. En aquest projecte hem intentat aplicar tècniques i mètodes de control els quals puguin arribar a millorar i perfeccionar els sistemes de mesura i control a nivell industrial i/o particular. En el nostre cas ha estat l’estudi dels olis lubricants usats en motors de combustió interna de variats vehicles com motocicletes, automòbils, camions o vaixells. Hem introduït una millora d’automatització mitjançant un circuit pneumàtic al captador de partícules, hi hem introduït una tècnica per captar partícules a partir de filtres de membrana, hem estudiat les mostres i llurs ferrogrames i membranes amb la finalitat de detectar les anomalies dels motors. L’objectiu del treball és l’estudi del desgast originat en motors de combustió interna, majoritàriament, Dièsel de camions, automòbils i vaixells. Això, comprèn la captació de partícules en ferrografies, la seva observació i anàlisi en microscopi, la seva classificació, comparació i la detecció d’anomalies en els motors. Per altra banda, també s’aprofundirà en les tècniques d’anàlisi, la lubricació i manteniment dels motors i el nou disseny i validació d’un captador de partícules automatitzat

Purpose: In vitro studies in porcine eyes have demonstrated a good correlation between induced intraocular pressure variations and corneal curvature changes, using a contact lens with an embedded microfabricated strain gauge. Continuous 24 hour-intraocular pressure (IOP) monitoring to detect large diurnal fluctuation is currently an unmet clinical need. The aims of this study is to evaluate precision of signal transmission and biocompatibility of 24 hour contact lens sensor wear (SENSIMED Triggerfish®) in humans. Methods: After full eye examination in 10 healthy volunteers, a 8.7 mm radius contact lens sensor and an orbital bandage containing a loop antenna were applied and connected to a portable recorder. Best corrected visual acuity and position, lubrication status and mobility of the sensor were assessed after 5 and 30 minutes, 4, 7 and 24 hours. Subjective comfort was scored and activities documented in a logbook. After sensor removal full eye examination was repeated, and the registration signal studied. Results: The comfort score was high and did not fluctuate significantly, except at the 7 hour-visit. The mobility of the contact lens was minimal but its lubrication remained good. Best corrected visual acuity was significantly reduced during the sensor wear and immediately after its removal. Three patients developed mild corneal staining. In all but one participant we obtained a registration IOP curve with visible ocular pulse amplitude. Conclusions: This 24 hour-trial confirmed the functionality and biocompatibility of SENSIMED Triggerfish® wireless contact lens sensor for IOP-fluctuation monitoring in volunteers. Further studies with a range of different contact lens sensor radii are indicated.

Työn kirjallisuusosassa esitellään paperi- ja kartonkikoneiden kiertovoitelujärjestelmien rakennetta ja voitelussa käytettyjen öljyjen ominaisuuksia. Lisäksi on selvitetty voiteluöljyn kunnossapidon kannalta keskeisten epäpuhtauksien kuten veden, hiukkasten ja ilmakuplien analysointia. Suurissa voitelujärjestelmissä öljyn suuri ilmapitoisuus on usein ongelma, mihin ei ole ollut selkeää ratkaisua. Työn tavoitteena oli tutkia ilmakuplien poistamista voiteluöljystä alipainekäsittelyn avulla. Alipaineen vaikusta eri öljyille ja lämpötiloilla tutkittiin laboratoriossa standarditestillä ja määritettiin sopiva alipaine tehdaskokeisiin. Testeissä havaittiin odotutetusti viskositeetin eli käytännössä lämpötilan olevan ratkaiseva tekijä ilman poistumisnopeuteen. Tehdasmittakaavan kokeissa mitattiin rakenteeltaan yksinkertaisen ja vähän energiaa kuluttavan ilmanpoistolaitteen toimintaa. Laitteisto sijoitetaan paluuöljyputkistoon ja sen ei tarvitse olla kiertovoitelukeskuksen yhteydessä. Täysimittainen laitteisto rakennettiin kartonkikoneen ja paperikoneen kiertovoitelujärjestelmiin. Laitteen avulla voidaan käsitellä koko voitelujärjestelmän öljy. Tuloksien mukaan laite toimii odotetulla tavalla ja vähentää merkittävästi ilmapitoisuutta. Järjestelmä on heikoimmillaan tilanteessa, jossa lämpötilat on pidettävä alhaisina ja ilmakuplia on runsaasti.

Tämän työn tavoitteena oli suunnitella esimerkkirakenne vaikeisiin olosuhteisiin tarkoitetusta sähkömoottorista. Ensisijaisesti tarkasteltavia osia sähkömoottorin rakenteessa olivat roottoriakseli, laakerointi sekä laakerikilvet. Laakeroinnista tarkasteltiin laakerivaurioiden syntymistä, tarvittavaa esijännitysvoimaa sekä jälkivoitelua. Lisäksi momenttiakselista tarkasteltiin sen vääntövärähtelyominaisuuksia sekä rungosta ja laakerikilvistä niiden jännityksiä B5-kiinnitysasennossa, eli laippakiinnityksessä. Työstä pyrittiin tekemään suunnitteluohje vastaavanlaisiin suunnittelutehtäviin. Tämän työn kirjallisessa osassa tarkasteltiin oikosulkumoottorin rakennetta ja laakerointia, josta perehdyttiin erityisesti erilaisiin kuormitustilanteisiin, voiteluun sekä kestoiänlaskentaan. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin roottoridynamiikkaa ja ominaismuotojen laskentaa. Kokonaisen roottorin, sisältäen roottoriakselin, –levypaketin, laakeroinnin ja ylikuormitussuojan, pienimmäksi ominaistaajuudeksi saatiin 62,1 Hz:ä, joka oli kuitenkin lähes kaksinkertainen verrattaessa roottorin käyntinopeuteen (33,3 Hz:ä). On siis varmaa, että roottorin kestoikä ei heikkene sen ominaistaajuuksien aiheuttamasta resonanssista. Pelkän roottoriakselin pienimmäksi ominaistaajuudeksi saatiin 448,0 Hz:ä. Verrattaessa tätä taajuutta roottorin käyntinopeuteen nähtiin, että roottoriakselin ominaistaajuuksien puolesta rakenne oli selvästi alikriittinen. Tarkasteltaessa roottoriakselin vääntövärähtelyn ominaistaajuutta 12,6 Hz:ä nähtiin, että se oli pienempi kuin moottorin pyörimisnopeus. Tämä ei kuitenkaan ollut moottorin kestoiän kannalta vakavaa. Koska todellisista sähkömoottorin käyttöolosuhteista ei ollut tarkkaa tietoa, tutkittiin laakeroinnin kestoikää kahdessa ääriolosuhteessa, joko moottoriin kohdistuva tärinä oli kokoajan suurin mahdollinen tunnettu tai tärinää ei ollut ollenkaan. Todellinen tilanne on jossakin näiden kahden ääriolosuhteen välissä. Oli kuitenkin varmaa, että tarkasteltava rakenne kestää halutun kestoiän eli 10000 tuntia laakeroinnin puolesta. Laakerikilpien ominaistaajuudet olivat korkeita eikä niillä ollut vaikutusta rakenteen kestoikään. Laakerikilpien korkeat ominaistaajuudet johtuivat niiden jäykästä rakenteesta ja suuresta materiaalipaksuudesta. Tarkasteltaessa momenttiakselin vääntövärähtelyn ominaistaajuutta 7,2 Hz:ä nähtiin, että se oli pienempi kuin moottorin pyörimisnopeus. Tämä ei kuitenkaan ollut moottorin kestoiän kannalta vakavaa, jos ominaistaajuus ja sen kerrannaiset ohitettaisiin sähkömoottorin käytössä hetkellisesti eikä moottoria käytettäisi vääntövärähtelyn taajuudella. Tarkasteltaessa B5-asennon jännityksiä nähdään, että ne kasvoivat rungon ja laakerikilven välisissä kiinnitysruuveissa yllättävän suuriksi. Normaalin ruuvin murtoraja on 640 MPa:a, kun jännitys rungon ja laakerikilven välisissä kiinnitysruuveissa oli suurimmillaan 400 MPa:a. Rakenne oli kuitenkin varmalla puolella kestävyyden suhteen, koska keskimääräinen vetojännitys ruuveissa oli noin 200 MPa:a. Ruuvien jännityksiä voidaan pienentää lisäämällä kiinnitys-ruuvien lukumäärää tai kasvattamalla niiden kokoa. Koko moottorin kiinnitysruuveissa jännitys oli vain 4 MPa:a, koska osan kuormituksesta kantoi laakerikilven olakkeet.
