Hubble parameter reconstruction from a principal component analysis: minimizing the bias

Aims. A model-independent reconstruction of the cosmic expansion rate is essential to a robust analysis of cosmological observations. Our goal is to demonstrate that current data are able to provide reasonable constraints on the behavior of the Hubble parameter with redshift, independently of any cosmological model or underlying gravity theory. Methods. Using type Ia supernova data, we show that it is possible to analytically calculate the Fisher matrix components in a Hubble parameter analysis without assumptions about the energy content of the Universe. We used a principal component analysis to reconstruct the Hubble parameter as a linear combination of the Fisher matrix eigenvectors (principal components). To suppress the bias introduced by the high redshift behavior of the components, we considered the value of the Hubble parameter at high redshift as a free parameter. We first tested our procedure using a mock sample of type Ia supernova observations, we then applied it to the real data compiled by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) group. Results. In the mock sample analysis, we demonstrate that it is possible to drastically suppress the bias introduced by the high redshift behavior of the principal components. Applying our procedure to the real data, we show that it allows us to determine the behavior of the Hubble parameter with reasonable uncertainty, without introducing any ad-hoc parameterizations. Beyond that, our reconstruction agrees with completely independent measurements of the Hubble parameter obtained from red-envelope galaxies.

Photochemistry of anthocyanins and their biological role in plant tissues

Anthocyanins, the major red, purple, and blue pigments of plants, absorb visible as well as UV radiation and are effective antioxidants and scavengers of active oxygen species. In plant leaves, one of the functional roles proposed for anthocyanins is protection of the photosynthetic apparatus from the effects of excess incident visible or UV-B radiation and photooxidative stress. In essence, a photoprotective role requires that the excited singlet states of both complexed and uncomplexed anthocyanins deactivate back to the ground state so quickly that intersystem crossing, photoreaction, and diffusion-controlled quenching processes cannot compete. Studies of the photochemical properties of synthetic analogs of anthocyanins and of several naturally occurring anthocyanins show that this is indeed the case, uncomplexed anthocyanins decaying back to the ground state via fast (subnanosecond) excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) and anthocyanin-copigment complexes by fast (sub-picosecond) charge-transfer-mediated internal conversion.

'Living together on one's own': Cohousing for older people - an example from Denmark and The Netherlands

‘Living together on one’s own’ is the seemingly contradictory expression of the National Association of Housing Communities for Elderly People (LVGO) in The Netherlands which in fact captures the essence of cohousing. Cohousing is a novel kind of neighbourhood, housing a novel form of intentional community, which began to take shape in Denmark in the early to mid-1960s and, independently, in The Netherlands a few years later. The inventors of cohousing wanted to live in a much more communal or community-oriented neighbourhood than was usual, but they wanted to do so without sacrificing the privacy of individual families or households and their dwellings. Could they have their cake and eat it too? It would seem so. What is cohousing for older people (op-cohousing)? Op-cohousing is essentially no different, except for the differences in outlook or expectations, experience, interests and abilities that a particular, exclusively older, group of people have brought to this housing type. I discuss and analyse several communities in both countries.

Glutamate-mediated transmission, alcohol, and alcoholism

Glutamate-mediated neurotransmission may be involved in the range of adaptive changes in brain which occur after ethanol administration in laboratory animals, and in chronic alcoholism in human cases. Excitatory amino acid transmission is modulated by a complex system of receptors and other effecters, the efficacy of which can be profoundly affected by altered gene or protein expression. Local variations in receptor composition may underlie intrinsic regional variations in susceptibility to pathological change. Equally, ethanol use and abuse may bring about alterations in receptor subunit expression as the essence of the adaptive response. Such considerations may underlie the regional localization characteristic of the pathogenesis of alcoholic brain damage, or they may form part of the homeostatic change that constitutes the neural substrate for alcohol dependence. The personal constructs of coping with chronic low back pain: is coping a necessary evil?

The construct of coping is explored in this paper utilising repertory grid technique with a small group of non-patients with chronic pain. Nineteen volunteers with low back pain completed a repertory grid with eight given elements signifying various self and illness-related roles. Two constructs were given and the remainder elicited using the triad method. The 19 participants rated themselves as being in less pain than those they typified as ill or disabled and considered themselves to be coping with their pain. The constructs elicited emphasised authenticity, the limitations of being a coper, mastery, active stoicism, cheerfulness, acceptance and maintaining acceptable social interactions and appearances. Copers were considered to not be in constant pain. Self, ideal-self and social-self constructs were closely related, The participants rated themselves more like copers than ill, pain-suffering, invalid or hypochondriacal persons. Being a coper, however, was less desirable than being pain free, In essence, these volunteers with low back pain see coping as a necessary evil. This ambivalent and ambiguous construing of coping needs to be further explored in community and patient groups if we are to improve the collaboration between patients and therapists in achieving good pain management. Understanding the practical sense of health actions: contributions of Philosophical Hermeneutics

Health actions have a powerful tech no-scientific armory invested in their instrumental success. Conversely, they have a fragile conceptual basis for the understanding and transformation of the practical sense of health-disease-care processes that especifically take place nowadays. This essay intends to identify the potential contributions of philosophical hermeneutics to overcome such fragility. With this purpose and through contemporary hermeneutics, the recovery of the aristotelian distinction between theory, technique and praxis and its repercussions is discussed, for a systematic treatment of the practical reason of health actions. Against this backdrop, the following stands out: the dialogic essence of understanding-interpreting human acts; the fusion of horizons as the movement of realization of those processes of understanding; and happiness projects, existential guide to everyday life, as the impulse and the possibility of openness of the reason to the practical sense of health actions.

Card sorts: Constructivist assessment tools

In a changing employment climate and with the growth of demand for careers guidance at all stages of life, careers guidance practice has moved from its positivist world view, with the counsellor as expert and client as passive responder, to more holistic 'constructivist' approaches. In essence, these approaches view the career as a holistic concept in which work and personal life are inextricably intertwined, and individuals are experts in their own lives, actively constructing their careers. The first to fully explore the constructivist approach, this book: provides a theoretical background to constructivism; outlines a range of constructivist approaches to career counselling; and gives examples of the practical application of constructivism. The equilibrium penetration of monolayers. Is equilibrium really established?

In studying the penetration of water-soluble surfactants into water-insoluble monolayers the main theoretical problem is to find a relationship that would enable the amount of surfactant that has entered the monolayer to be calculated from a set of equilibrium surface pressure-area isotherms. Despite many attempts, no current theory gives satisfactory results when applied to experimental data (Langmuir 14 (1998) 2148). One possible reason is that equilibrium had not been established when the surface pressure-area curves were measured. The three experiments reported here suggest that equilibrium is extremely difficult to establish in such systems when the area is low or the surface pressure is high. The essence of these experiments is to try to reach the same final condition by two different routes. In the first route, the one nearly always used in equilibrium penetration measurements, the surfactant is injected under the expanded monolayer, which is then slowly compressed in steps, with time allowed at each step for a steady surface pressure to be attained. In the second procedure, the monolayer is first compressed to a high surface pressure and the surfactant then injected. A stepped expansion isotherm may then be observed. Surface pressure-area per monolayer molecule isotherms, reflection spectra, and slow neutron reflectivity data all show the same pattern: if the surfactant was allowed to penetrate while the monolayer was in an expanded state, it was not completely removed when the monolayer was compressed; but if the monolayer was in a highly compressed state when exposed to the surfactant little penetration took place until the film was expanded. There thus appear to be very large energy barriers to the ejection of surfactant from a compressed monolayer and to the penetration of surfactant into a compressed monolayer. Although these experiments have some limitations, it now seems likely that at least some of the penetration data used in evaluating the various thermodynamic treatments of equilibrium penetration were not equilibrium data. Ballistic missile defence: An Australian perspective

The University of Queensland's School of Political Science and International Studies organised a round table in Canberra on 27 June 2001 that brought together a select group of government policy-makers and academic specialists to discuss the issue of ballistic missile defence (BMD). The round table provided useful insights into Australian thinking on the issue. This report seeks to summarise the essence of those discussions in order to contribute to the broader national debate.(1)

Outcomes of transient evoked otoacoustic emission testing in 6-year-old school children: A comparison with pure tone screening and tympanometry

Objectives: (1) To establish test performance measures for Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission testing of 6-year-old children in a school setting; (2) To investigate whether Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission testing provides a more accurate and effective alternative to a pure tone screening plus tympanometry protocol. Methods: Pure tone screening, tympanometry and transient evoked otoacoustic emission data were collected from 940 subjects (1880 ears), with a mean age of 6.2 years. Subjects were tested in non-sound-treated rooms within 22 schools. Receiver operating characteristics curves along with specificity, sensitivity, accuracy and efficiency values were determined for a variety of transient evoked otoacoustic emission/pure tone screening/tympanometry comparisons. Results: The Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission failure rate for the group was 20.3%. The failure rate for pure tone screening was found to be 8.9%, whilst 18.6% of subjects failed a protocol consisting of combined pure tone screening and tympanometry results. In essence, findings from the comparison of overall Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission pass/fail with overall pure tone screening pass/fail suggested that use of a modified Rhode Island Hearing Assessment Project criterion would result in a very high probability that a child with a pass result has normal hearing (true negative). However, the hit rate was only moderate. Selection of a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) criterion set at greater than or equal to 1 dB appeared to provide the best test performance measures for the range of SNR values investigated. Test performance measures generally declined when tympanometry results were included, with the exception of lower false alarm rates and higher positive predictive values. The exclusion of low frequency data from the Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission SNR versus pure tone screening analysis resulted in improved performance measures. Conclusions: The present study poses several implications for the clinical implementation of Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission screening for entry level school children. Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission pass/fail criteria will require revision. The findings of the current investigation offer support to the possible replacement of pure tone screening with Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission testing for 6-year-old children. However, they do not suggest the replacement of the pure tone screening plus tympanometry battery. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Sobre a atividade da consciência infeliz na Fenomenologia do Espírito de Hegel

Realizamos uma análise da atividade da Consciência Infeliz (unglücklichesBewusstsein), tal como foi exposta por G.W.F. Hegel em sua obraFenomenologia do Espírito(PhänomenologiedesGeistes), de 1807.A Consciência Infeliz é uma denominação hegeliana referente a uma consciência religiosa que se cinde em duas; um destes seus lados, ela aliena de si e tem por sua essência que reside no além, o Imutável; ao outro lado, ela mesma, assevera como o Mutável, inessente, residente no aquém. Toda a sua atividade resume-se a unir isto que ela põe como o infinitamente desunido, a saber, ela e sua essência, pois a consciência ainda não é ciente de que esta essência absoluta que ela opôs a si mesma nada mais é do que ela mesma. Isto resulta num tender singular para seu objeto Universal absoluto e ao mesmo tempo não querer maculá-lo com esta sua singularidade; numa atividade que deve absolutamente ser e não-ser, busca de algo que não pode nem deve ser buscado. Enquanto herdeira do pensamento estóico e cético, a Consciência Infeliz aparece como consciência contraditória, curvada sobre si mesma e sempre dolorida, que além de efetivar um movimento de negação para com o mundo do aquém e tudo o que lhe diz respeito, busca se libertar da dor que é ser portadora desta contraditoriedade que surge justamente daquela sua atitude negativa. A fim de que possamos fundamentar esta atitude Infeliz, realizamos em nosso primeiro capítulo uma investigação acerca de suas características peculiares nas esferas anteriores ao seu aparecimento, a saber, a esfera do Entendimento (Verstand), a dialética do Senhor e do Escravo e do Estoicismo e Ceticismo. No segundo capítulo, discorremos acerca do conceito e da atividade da Consciência Infeliz, bem como procuramos investigar a necessidade de sua superação a partir de uma análise de sua suprassunção no momento da Razão (Vernunft). Por fim, em nosso terceiro e último capítulo, procuramos refletir sobre em que medida se poderia afirmar que as consciências contemporâneas continuam agindo de maneira infeliz, e para tanto, nos apoiamos em breves leituras de S. Freud, pensador do ―mal-estar‖ moderno e Z.Bauman, pensador do ―mal-estar‖ contemporâneo.
