Muutoskatsastusta koskeva lainsäädäntö aiheuttaa tulkintavaikeuksia ja rajoitteita moottoripyöräharrastajille ja alan toimijoille. Nykyinen asetus edellyttää tarvittaessa asiantuntijaselvitystä rakennemuutoksen lujuudesta ja hitsaustyöstä. Moottoripyörän geometria on laissa rajattu akselivälin ja emäputken kulman osalta. Moottoripyörien runkoja valmistetaan hitsaamalla seostamattomista teräksistä ja lämpökäsiteltävistä alumiini- ja terässeoksista. Runkojen muuntelu suoritetaan myös yleisesti hitsaamalla. Turvallisuuden kannalta tärkeiltä hitsausliitoksilta vaaditaan hyvää laatua, joka saavutetaan oikeilla hitsausparametreilla ja -suorituksella. Vaatimukset seostamattomalle teräkselle voidaan täyttää pätevöityneen hitsaajan toimesta. Lämpökäsiteltävät seokset vaativat lisäksi jälkilämpökäsittelyn, mikä edelleen vaikeuttaa runkojen hitsausta. Hitsien laadun merkitystä moottoripyörän rungossa tutkittiin soveltamalla rajoitetun vahingon periaatetta. Vauriotapauksena mallinnettiin satunnaisen rungon hitsausliitoksen murtuminen. Eri kuormitustilanteissa elementtimenetelmää hyödyntäen todettiin chopper-tyyppisten moottoripyörien runkojen olevan osittain vauriosietoisia ja havaittiin kriittiset hitsausliitokset emä- ja vaakaputken alueilla. Moottoripyörien runkojen kriittisiä hitsausliitoksia tarkasteltiin väsymisen kannalta. Soveltamalla tehollista lovijännitystä, vertailtiin emäputken hitsausliitosten väsymiskestävyyttä oletetulla kuormituksella. Tulosten perusteella muunneltu moottoripyörän runko voi olla alkuperäisrunkoa kestävämpi tai heikompi. Moottoripyörän akseliväli tai emäputken kulma eivät määrää kestävyyttä, vaan rakenteen yksityiskohtainen suunnittelu. Kriittisten liitosten väsymiskestävyyksissä havaittiin merkittäviä eroja eri mallien välillä.

Työn tarkoituksena oli löytää kapillaarielektroforeesimenetelmä (CE), joka soveltuisi metallien neste-nesteuutossa käytettävien orgaanisten uuttofaasien koostumuksen analysointiin. Kapillaarielektroforeesissa käytetyn elektrolyyttiliuoksen analyytti-kohtaista optimointia ei tässä työssä tehty, vaan liikkeelle lähdettiin fenoleille tarkoitetulla menetelmällä. Tarkasteltavia uuttoreagenssiryhmiä olivat hydroksi-oksiimit sekä fosfiinihappo- ja fosforihappopohjaiset reagenssit. Tutkittavia kaupallisia laimentimia olivat Orfom SX 11 ja Shellsol D70. Lisäksi tutkittiin kahta modifiointiainetta, TOPOa (tri-n-oktyylifosfiinioksidi) ja TXIB:tä (2,2,4-trimetyyli-1,3-pentaanidiolidi-isobutyraatti). Työssä tavoiteltiin kapillaarielektroforeesin hyötyjä erityisesti hydrometallurgisessa teollisuudessa. Suurimpana hyötynä ennakoitiin mahdollisuus analysoida suuria molekyylejä, kuten uuttoreagenssi-metallikomplekseja, joita ei pystytä analysoimaan kaasukromatografilla (GC). Näytteet voidaan myös analysoida ilman hidasta ja usein ei-kvantitatiivista derivatisointia. Kirjallisuudesta ei löytynyt aiempia artikkeleita CE:n soveltamisesta kyseisille aiheille. Kapillaarielektroforeesianalyyseissa pystyttiin esimerkiksi havaitsemaan hydroksi-oksiimin kuparikompleksi orgaanisessa faasissa. Seulonta-ajoissa yleisenä ongelmana oli kuitenkin tulosten heikko toistettavuus. Kapillaari-elektro-foreesi-menetelmä tarjoaa selvästi mahdollisuuksia tulevaisuudessa, mutta vielä sillä ei päästy luotettavaan toistoon sähkökentän häiriöiden ja elektrolyyttiliuoksen riittämättömän optimoinnin vuoksi. Lisäksi teollisissa olosuhteissa käytetyille autenttisille hydroksioksiimi- ja fosfiinihapponäytteille tehtiin perinteisiä kaasukromatografia-analyysejä, joiden perusteella voitiin nähdä uuttofaasin koostumuksen muuttuneen prosessissa. Hapettuminen sekä eri hydrolyysireaktiot ovat tärkeimmät syyt reagenssien ja laimentimien muuttumiselle. Näitä hajoamistuotteita ei tässä työssä onnistuttu analysoimaan kapillaarielektroforeesilla.

Viime vuosisadan lopulla tehtiin tärkeä havainto supernovista: galaksit näyttävät loittenevan kiihtyvällä vauhdilla. Näiden havaintojen jälkeen yleistetyt gravitaatioteoriat ovat nousseet huomattavan kiinnostuksen kohteiksi. Näillä uusilla teorioilla voidaan mahdollisesti selittää maailmankaikkeuden kiihtyvä laajeneminen ilman pimeää energiaa. Tässä tutkielmassa on perehdytty yhteen mahdolliseen yleistykseen: Palatini-formalismiin f(R)-teorioissa. Yleisessä suhteellisuusteoriassa aika-avaruuden ominaisuudet seuraavat metriikasta. Tämä on erikoistapaus Palatiniformalismissa, jossa yhdensuuntaissiirtoon liittyvä konnektio on metriikasta riippumaton. Palatini-formalismi selviää samoista testeistä kuin erikoistapauksensa, yleinen suhteellisuusteoria. Käsitellyt Lagrangen tiheydet ovat f(R)-muotoa eli kaarevuuden funktioita. Tutkielmassa on aluksi perehdytty menetelmän historiaan. Taustojen selvittelyn jälkeen käsitellään Palatini-formalismia yksinkertaisessa tapauksessa, jossa konnektio on symmetrinen. Erikoistapauksena käsitellään eräs Lagrangen tiheys, jolla voidaan selittää maailmankaikkeuden kiihtyvä laajeneminen. Palatini-formalismiin kohdistunutta kritiikkiä on myös tarkasteltu _ mikään ei kuitenkaan sulje menetelmää pois laskuista. Vaikka Palatini-formalismia tarkastellaan tavallisesti symmetrisen konnektion tapauksessa, on yksi tutkielman luku omistettu yleisemmälle tapaukselle. Osoittautuu, että monet symmetriseen konnektioon liitetyt ominaisuudet seuraavat yleisemmästäkin tapauksesta, mutta ilman tarvetta lisäoletuksiin. Samassa luvussa on myös tarkasteltu materian osuutta Lagrangen tiheydessä. Tutkielman lopussa on tarkasteltu mahdollisuuksia hyödyntää symmetriaa konnektion määräämisessä. Tätä mahdollisuutta ei ole juurikaan tutkittu aiemmin. Havainnot ovat osoittaneet, että maailmankaikkeudessa esiintyy symmetriaa. Tensorien muotoinvarianssia hyödynnetään konnektion komponenttien laskemiseen. Yleisessä tapauksessa konnektiolla on 64 komponenttia, jotka voivat riippua ajasta ja paikasta. Homogeenisessa ja isotrooppisessa tapauksessa vapausasteet saadaan rajoitettua neljään vain ajasta riippuvaan funktioon. Pallosymmetrisessä tapauksessa vapausasteita jää 14 ajasta ja säteestä riippuvaa funktiota. Näitä tuloksia ei tiettävästi ole laskettu muualla. Tässä laskettuja tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää sijoittamalla huomattavasti rajatut konnektion komponentit kenttäyhtälöihin. Näin saadut yhtälöt ovat huomattavasti yksinkertaisempia. Käyttömahdollisuudet eivät rajoitu pelkästään Palatini-formalismiin, vaan kirjoittamalla Lagrangen tiheys tietyllä tavalla, voidaan tuloksia käyttää myös puhtaasti metrisessä formalismissa.

The main goal of the thesis was to further develop harvester head saw device to the Finnish forest machine manufacturer. The work was done from the basis of the manufacturer´s current production model and the earlier study from this same subject called: “Development of chain saw for harvester” Tero Kaatrasalo, 2004. The work was focused to improving the serviceability and reliability of the saw device, but design also included adding few beforehand determined new features into the saw unit. This was done to give some added value for the end customer. The work includes analysis of the earlier saw devices and ideations of the improvements for the structure.

The research assesses the skills of upper comprehensive school pupils in history. The focus is on locating personal motives, assessing wider reasons hidden in historical sources and evaluating source reliability. The research also questions how a wide use of multiple sources affects pupils’ holistic understanding of historical phenomena. The participants were a multicultural group of pupils. The origins of their cultures can be traced to the Balkan, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. The number of native Finnish speakers and pupils speaking Finnish as their second language was almost equal. The multicultural composition provides opportunities to assess how culturally responsive learning history from sources is. The intercultural approach to learning in a multicultural setting emphasizes equality as a precondition for learning. In order to set assignments at least to some extent match with all participants only those answers were taken into account which were produced by pupils who had studied history for a similar period of time in the Finnish comprehensive school system. Due to the small number of participants (41), the study avoids wide generalizations. Nevertheless, possible cultural blueprints in pupils’ way of thinking are noted. The first test examined the skills of pupils to find motives for emigration. The results showed that for 7th graders finding reasons is not a problematic task. However, the number of reasons noticed and justifications varied. In addition, the way the pupils explained their choices was a distinguishing factor. Some pupils interpreted source material making use of previous knowledge on the issue, while other pupils based their analysis solely on the text handed and did not try to add their own knowledge. Answers were divided into three categories: historical, explanatory and stating. Historical answers combined smoothly previously learned historical knowledge to one’s own source analysis; explanatory answers often ignored a wider frame, although they were effective when explaining e.g. historical concepts. The stating answers only noticed motives from the sources and made no attempts to explain them historically. Was the first test culturally responsive? All pupils representing different cultures tackled the first source exam successfully, but there were some signs of how historical concepts are understood in a slightly different way if the pupil’s personal history has no linkage to the concepts under scrutiny. The second test focused on the history of Native Americans. The test first required pupils to recognize whether short source extracts (5) were written by Indians or Caucasians. Based on what they had already learned from North American history, the pupils did not find it hard to distinguish between the sources. The analysis of multiphase causes and consequences of the disputes between Native Americans and white Americans caused dispersion among pupils. Using two historical sources and combining historical knowledge from both of them simultaneously was cumbersome for many. The explanations of consequences can be divided into two groups: the ones emphasizing short term consequences and those placing emphasis on long term consequences. The short term approach was mainly followed by boys in every group. The girls mainly paid attention to long term consequences. The result suggests that historical knowledge in sources is at least to some extent read through role and gender lenses. The third test required pupils to explain in their own words how the three sources given differed in their account of living conditions in Nazi Germany, which turned out to be demanding for many pupils. The pupils’ stronghold was rather the assessment of source reliability and accounts why the sources approached the same events differently. All participants wrote critical and justified comments on reliability and aspects that might have affected the content of the sources. The pupils felt that the main reasons that affected source reliability were the authors’ ethnic background, nationality and profession. The assessment showed that pupils were well aware that position in a historical situation has an impact on historical accounts, but in certain cases the victim’s account was seen as a historical truth. The account of events by a historian was chosen most often as the most reliable source, but it was often justified leniently with an indication to professionalism rather than with clear ideas of how historians conduct accounts based on sources. In brief, the last source test demonstrates that pupils have a strong idea that the ethnicity or nationalism determines how people explained events of the past. It is also an implication that pupils understand how historical knowledge is interpretative. The results also imply that history can be analyzed from a neutral perspective. One’s own membership in an ethnical or religious group does not automatically mean that a person’s cultural identity excludes historical explanations if something in them contradicts with his or her identity. The second method of extracting knowledge of pupils’ historical thinking was an essay analysis. The analysis shows that an analytical account of complicated political issues, which often include a great number of complicated political concepts, leads more likely to an inconsistent structure in the written work of pupils. The material also demonstrates that pupils have a strong tendency to take a critical stance when assessing history. Historical empathy in particular is shown if history somehow has a linkage to young people, children or minorities. Some topics can also awake strong feelings, especially among pupils with emigrant background, if there is a linkage between one’s own personal history and that of the school; and occasionally a student’s historical experience or thoughts replaced school history. Using sources during history lessons at school seems to have many advantages. It enhances the reasoning skills of pupils and their skills to assess the nature of historical knowledge. Thus one of the main aims and a great benefit of source work is to encourage pupils to express their own ideas and opinions. To conclude, when assessing the skills of adolescents in history - their work with sources, comments on history, historical knowledge and finally their historical thinking - one should be cautious and avoid cut off score evaluations. One purpose of pursuing history with sources is to encourage pupils to think independently, which is a useful tool for further identity construction. The idea that pupils have the right to conduct their own interpretations of history can be partially understood as part of a wider learning process, justification to study history comes from extrinsic reasons. The intrinsic reason is history itself; in order to understand history one should have a basic understanding of history as a specific domain of knowledge. Using sources does not mean that knowing history is of secondary importance. Only a balance between knowing the contextual history, understanding basic key concepts and working with sources is a solid base to improve pupils’ historical understanding.

The Ageing in Working Life. Do Adolescence and Schooling Beat Adulthood and Experience? This study examines the changes in the work and the work organisations of employees in the fields of health care and retail trade who have turned 45 and their experience of change. In addition, the question of how ageing employees experience their status in post-modern working life is explored. Attention is also focused on the choices and decisions connected with staying at work and retiring. These views are examined in relation to professions and professional cultures. Thematic interviews (N=98) were used to gather the material. The effects of the market liberalistic turn in welfare policy are clearly seen in the everyday work of the health care professions. These changes were examined from the point of view of managing by outcomes and quality assurance, multi-professional cooperation, flexibility in the division of labour, and the spread of market-like procedures. The discourse of those in involved retail trade was dominated by extremely tight global market competition and control of outcomes, and by the structural changes taking place in the retail trade sector. This change discourse was to a large extent a reaction to those changes in the functional environment which were experienced as negative and to the conflict between their own professional identity and professional ethics on the one hand, and their functional environment on the other. There were also obstacles connected with professional culture: defending one's own station and power, guarding the 'frontier', showed up in attitudes towards new management and organisation models or towards structural and functional reforms. The deep structures of professional culture and the mindset of the actors change much more slowly than the functional practices of organisations. For those in a supervisory position, the loss of power due to becoming part of a chain or because of the introduction of a team organisation model was not an easy thing to accept. The nurses and others in related fields felt that they were forced to do work that was below their level of training and professional skill. For sales personnel and those who did assisting work in health care, power and the possibility of having an influence were not so important, as long as they were able to do their work in their own way and were trusted. This view is often completely forgotten, for example, in various organisation models in which power and the possibility of having an influence entwined with power are taken for granted as being clearly positive and desired aspects of job satisfaction. Up to date professional skills were experienced as being important from the point of view of professional identity and self-worth. Thus, training can be understood as a moral obligation, which in turn is intertwined with professional ideology. In the rhetoric of adult education, an adult is expected to be an active player who will seek training again and again if working life so requires. The dark side of this ideology, which leads to feelings of guilt, was apparent in the thoughts of the respondents. Am I never good enough at my job; why must I continually strive for better, additional qualifications? The majority of the respondents evaluated their expertise as being at quite a high level. This self-confidence did not extend to applying for a job. Job recruitment was seen as a situation in which age discrimination reached its peak. The interviewees were unanimous about the idea that society favours the young. Especially among those in the retail trade sector, there was a feeling that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a new job of the same level or a permanent post if they were made redundant. Age discrimination was also apparent in the retail trade field in the form of older employees being retired against their will or transferred to other tasks. It was felt that ruthless forced retirement of older workers was part of the personnel policy of some organisations. The importance of one's outward appearance was connected with the theme of discrimination. This phenomenon is described using the concept of the double standard of ageing in feminist research. An ageing woman is relegated to an inferior position due to both her age and her sex. A culture that would both make possible and allow various types of choices regardless of age, which is described as being characteristic of the post-modern era, does not seem to be very topical in the practice of working life. It is important for employees that the management and the personnel policy that is being implemented makes them feel like both their contribution and they as individuals are appreciated, that their opinions are listened to and that they are noticed as persons. The interviewees hoped for gratitude and a concern for the well-being of employees that shows in everyday life. They valued training and activities aimed at maintaining their work ability, but thought that better coping at work and a pleasant working environment cannot be achieved through such measures as along as the foundation is 'in a mess'. Development of the quality of working life is the only thing that can improve job satisfaction and get people to remain in the work force longer than at present. There should be a sufficient number of properly trained employees at the work place. It was important to the respondents that they be able to stay on their job to the end with honour, since compromising with their own quality standards or acting contrary to their ideal self-image in terms of professional ethics would strike a blow to their professional self-esteem. They called for the development of various types of workplace flexibility, and felt that they have the right to a lightened workload and to early retirement. Early retirement was even seen as an altruistic deed: it would free up a place for younger workers. Thoughts of retirements were explained by familiar factors such as health and finances, life situation, the enticement of free-time, as well as by various factors related to work. It is very important to ageing employees that their work has meaningful content. The values related to self-fulfilment are felt to be of great importance, and if they cannot be realised at work, the respondents wanted more free time, either through retirement or in the form of flexibility in working life.

Lautanauhatekniikka on monipuolinen menetelmä esimerkiksi kuvioitujen nauhojen kutomiseen, mutta uusien kuvioaiheiden suunnittelu, tai aloittelijalle jo valmiiden ohjeettomien kuviomallien jäljittely, voi helposti käydä työlääksi menetelmän ominaispiirteiden johdosta. Tämän työn tavoitteena oli kehittää ohjelmallinen työkalu auttamaan näissä ongelmissa automatisoimalla kudontaohjeen etsintä käyttäjän laatimalle tavoitekuviolle. Ratkaisumenetelmän perustaksi valittiin geneettinen algoritmi, minkä johdosta työn keskeisintutkimusongelma oli kartoittaa algoritmin perusoperaatioiden parametrien ja tavoitekuvion kompleksisuuden keskinäisiä riippuvuuksia riittävästi toimivien arvosuositusten antamiseen ohjelman tulevassa käytännön käytössä. Työssä ei kehitetty sovellusalueeseen mukautettuja evoluutiooperaatioita, vaan keskityttiin luomaan hyvin tunnetuista elementeistä perusta, jota voi myöhemmin kehittää eteenpäin.

In my PhD dissertation, I have examined a group of people of Scandinavian origin received by Ospizio dei Convertendi. This group has been hitherto largely unknown to historical research. The Ospizio was an institute founded by the Oratorian Congregation in Rome in 1673 to provide religious instruction and material aid to both recent and aspirant converts to Roman Catholicism. My research traces the profile of converts and a typology of motives, examining different factors which influenced the conversion process. I show that the key factors were often of a social rather than a religious nature. Moreover, I have analyzed the hospice in the context of Counter-Reformation charity as well. In terms of numbers, the Scandinavians formed a somewhat marginal yet not insignificant group within the Roman hospice. Out of a total of 2203 guests received between 1673 and 1706, 4.6 % were Scandinavians: 74 Swedes (including Finland and Livonia) and 27 Danes (including Norway). They came from a rigorously Protestant region which reacted to Catholicism with severe legislative measures. Converts to Catholicism risked confiscation of their goods, expulsion or even capital punishment. Since both Sweden and Denmark were practically impenetrable to Catholicism at the time and clandestine missionary attempts often failed before they had even properly started, the Roman Catholic Church shifted its interest towards Northerners arriving in Rome, a preferred destination for young noblemen, artists and migrant craftsmen. The material related to Ospizio dei Convertendi, conserved in the Vatican archives, is a scarcely known yet unusually rich source, not only for the religious history of our continent, but also for social history and the study of migration in early modern Europe. It contains a wealth of information about members of the subordinate classes, of their travels and lives in Europe. The profile delineated in these documents is of individuals who had a wide range of different professions and different aspirations. These documents encompass a vast social spectrum that was highly mobile on a continent which by that time had become pluriconfessional. Therefore, these migrants faced the complex religious reality in their everyday life. The principal corpus of my research consists of two types of manuscript sources created for administrative and in a way also for apologetic purposes of the Roman Catholic Church. My starting point is the Primo registro generale of Ospizio dei Convertendi. This is a volume in which the following information about each guest was registered: name, nationality, city of origin, age, sex, profession, confession professed before converting, date of arrival, departure, abjuration and baptism. Typically, the convert was male, originating from Stockholm or Copenhagen, from 21 to 30 years of age. The biggest occupational groups in descending order were soldiers, noblemen, craftsmen and sailors. Thus the data reflects a multiform reality of interurban and long distance migration, ideals regarding the education of young noblemen and gentry as well as the need of European armies to hire foreign mercenaries in their various campaigns. Against this background the almost total absence of women is hardly surprising: there is only one woman in the material I have studied. The second main source, Nota degl’ospiti ricevuti e spese fatte per essi, sheds more light on the choices of the converts, their motivations and their lives outside Scandinavia before reaching Rome. This narrative material permits an analysis which completes but also goes far beyond the columns of the Institute’s general register. This material consists of reports written by Catholic priests based on an interview conducted upon each guest’s arrival. The material frequently includes information on what the converts would do following their departure from the Institute as well. These sources have a specific narrative form and contain short biographies, list reasons for converting and information about the journey from the North to the Mediterranean - a journey which in many cases took several years. Moreover, they show that certain unorthodox practices such as calling on the saints and pleading for help from them were not uncommon in the Protestant popular religion. The recording of information on conversions from Protestantism to Catholicism reflects both religious and social interest on the part of the receiving institute. The information obtained was used for the purposes of religious teaching, for finding adequate ways of inserting the convert into Italian society so that he could earn a living, and to find effective methods to convert others with a similar cultural and geographical background. The stories recorded were based on interviews with the newly-arrived, information obtained from a travel companion or fellow countrymen, or from written documents the aspirant converts carried with them. These sources illustrate, although sometimes in rather simplified ways, the circumstances and motivations which were relevant to the choice of changing one’s confession. In addition, I have examined petitions addressed to the hospice and other Roman authorities in order to get financial aid. These petitions were written by Italian scrittori, and they contain certain conventions and topoi of presenting the conversion with the purpose of improving the chances of obtaining financial aid. It is through these filters, which may seem initially almost invisible, that the remote voice of the converts reaches us. The results of the analysis are particularly interesting because they disagree with some of the principal conclusions of previous work on the subject. First, earlier research has focused almost exclusively on the conversions of noblemen, and has argued, second, that the Queen Christina of Sweden was the driving force behind their change of confession. The sources examined for this dissertation present a profile of long-distance migrants, many of them members of the subordinate classes, who were looking for ways to make their living in Europe. These people had in many cases left their country of origin several years earlier and not for religious reasons, so, crucially, we are not dealing with confessional migration in these cases. Rather, conversion was a complex process, intricately tied up with strategies of survival, integration and upward social mobility. At the same time, while these components are significant on their own right, they do not necessarily point to the absence of motivations of a more clearly religious nature.

Suunnanmuutoksia -raporttiin on koottu hankkeen tuloksia sekä aiemmissa Etelä-Karjala-instituutin hankkeissa syntynyttä tietoa. Raportti on tiivis lukupaketti, joka sisältää seitsemän artikkelia maakunnan kannalta keskeisistä aiheista. Jokaisen ytimekkään artikkelin lopussa on toimenpide-ehdotuksia, jotka on laadittu aluekehitystä silmälläpitäen. Raportissa pohditaan kestävän rakennemuutoksen mahdollisuuksia, maakunnan identiteetin ja median suhdetta, Saimaata ja veden merkitystä, yliopiston asemaa maakunnassa, venäläisten maahanmuuttoa ja monikulttuurisuutta, matkailun kehittämistä sekä kulttuurin merkitystä maakunnan hyvinvoinnille. Etelä-Karjalassa on tehty paljon työtä hyvinvoinnin eteen ja kirjoitettu runsaasti erilaisia strategioita. Strategioiden toteuttajia ei tunnu kuitenkaan olevan tarpeeksi. Maakunta on ikään kuin odottavassa tilassa ja toivoo, että jostakin löytyisi veturi, joka tulisi vetämään maakuntaa eteenpäin. Suunnanmuutoksia -raportin kirjoittajat esittävät, että Etelä-Karjalan on aika siirtyä veturin odottamisesta malliin, jossa kaikki toimijat ottavat vastuuta oma-aloitteisina toimijoina. Luovuus ei synny siitä, että yksi vetää muita perässään kohti tiettyä päämäärää, vaan siitä, että kukin toimija ottaa vastuun omasta hyvinvoinnistaan ja kulkee luovasti sitä kohti. Suunnanmuutoksia -raportti päättyy toivomukseen maakunnallisesta flow-ilmiöstä, keskittymisen, osaamisen ja onnistumisen kautta saavutetusta onnellisuuden tunteesta. Sen alkua ja suuntaa on mahdoton ennustaa, mutta aika on kypsä entistä radikaaleimmille innovaatioille. Näiden tekeminen vaatii flowta; halua ja rohkeutta tavoitella jotakin sellaista, joka on arkipäiväisyyden yläpuolella. Raportti on suunnattu kaikille Etelä-Karjalan tulevaisuudesta ja kehittämisestä kiinnostuneille. Raportin kirjoittaneet Etelä-Karjala-instituutin tutkijat toivovat etenkin kuntien päättäjien ja aluekehittäjien ottavan sen työkalukseen.

Tutkimus on esiselvitystyö, jonka tavoitteena oli selvittää miten luoda innovaatiojärjestelmä Kouvolan seudulle. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli selvittää alueen innovaatiojärjestelmän nykytila, tutkia miten toimijat saadaan sitoutumaan ja toimimaan kohti yhteistä päämäärää sekä kuvata prosessi kehitystyölle. Kouvolan seudulla on tapahtunut lähiaikoina runsaasti muutoksia, jotka vaikuttavat myös innovaatiotoimintaan. Kehitystä on tapahtunut, mutta kehitystä on kiihdytettävä, jotta alue on tulevaisuudessa elinvoimainen seutu asua ja yrittää. Suoritettujen kahdeksan asiantuntijahaastattelun pohjalta voidaan todeta, että Kouvolan seudulla ei nykyisellään ole innovaatiojärjestelmää. Kouvolan seudulla on innovaatiojärjestelmän osia, mutta toiminta on hajanaista ja toimijoilla ei ole selkeää kuvaa omasta roolistaan osana kokonaisuutta. Innovaatioiden syntyä ei voi jättää sattuman käsiin, vaan uusien innovaatioiden syntyminen vaatii yhteistyötä ja vuorovaikutusta eri yritysten ja organisaatioiden välillä. Innovaatiojärjestelmän luomiseen Kouvolan seudulle ei ole yhtä oikeaa ja helppoa tietä. Harmaakorven alueellinen kehitysalustamenetelmä tarjoaa selkeän prosessin kehitystyöhön, mutta onko Kouvolassa tarvittavia resursseja ja osaamista prosessin läpivientiin? Tulisiko lähteä liikkeelle pienistä asioista, yhteisesti määritellyistä käsitteistä, päämääristä ja rooleista. Yhtenä ratkaisuna on Kouvolan seudun innovaatio-ohjelman rakentaminen, jossa nämä määritellään. Ohjelman kehittämisessä on syytä olla mukana mahdollisimman laajalti innovaatiojärjestelmän toimijoita, mutta kehittämisprosessin on syytä olla kevyt. Jo ohjelmaa kehittäessä tarvitaan erilaisia pilot-projekteja ja foorumeita, joiden kautta Kouvolan seudun innovaatiojärjestelmää saadaan kehitettyä ja pikku hiljaa rakennettua luottamusta ja yhteistyötä. Tekemisen kautta tietoisuus toiminnasta ja sen eduista leviää, ja Kouvolan seudun saadaan luotua toimiva alueellinen innovaatiojärjestelmä.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on analysoida pääjohtajan kaksoisroolin eriytymistä suomalaisissa pörssiyhtiöissä, sekä sen vaikutusta yrityksen suorituskykyyn taloudellisia tunnuslukuja apuna käyttäen. Tutkielmassa löydettiin vastaus siihen, mikä on mahdollisesti aiheuttanut yrityksessä pääjohtajan kaksoisroolista luopumisen aineiston perusteella. Tutkimusmenetelmänä on laadullinen tapaustutkimus. Otoksen suuruus on 130 suomalaista pörssiyhtiötä ja tutkielman aineisto koostuu pääasiallisesti niiden vuosikertomuksista, joista vain kuudella yrityksellä on ollut käytössään johtamisrakenteena pääjohtajan kaksoisrooli tutkittavalla ajanjaksolla. Tutkielma osoittaa, että pääjohtajan kaksoisroolista ollaan Suomessa luovuttu 2000-luvulla melkein kokonaan. Merkittävimpänä syynä kaksoisroolin eriytymiseen pidän pörssiyhtiöille laadittuja Corporate Governance –suosituksia. Johtamisrakenteen vaikutusta yrityksen suorituskyvyn paranemiseen ei yksiselitteisesti pystytä selittämään, vaan analysoitaessa sen merkitystä, tulisi ottaa huomioon myös yrityksen toimintaympäristön muutokset ja tapahtumat.

Appearance of trust in regional, co-operative networks In our times, the value of social networks has been widely acknowledged. One can say that it is important for private persons to get networked, whilst it is even a must for companies and organizations in business life. This doctor's thesis examines three co-operative regional networks. Networks are located in Western Uusimaa (Länsi-Uusimaa) region in southernmost Finland, and they had both public organizations and private companies as participants (later called ‘players’). Initially, all of them were co-financed from public funds, and two of them are still operational while writing this. The main target of these networks has been to act as learning networks. The learning network stands for an ensemble of research and development units and workplaces constituting a common forum for learning. The main focus in this study has been on qualitative and structural characteristics of the networks, and how they are relating with intrinsic trust. In addition to the development of trust, it has been studied, at what level organizational learning within the networks takes place, and lastly, what kind of factors facilitate the development of social capital. The theoretical framework for the study is built on analysing trust and social capital. It is a 'mission impossible' to find single definitions for such major concepts. In this study, from the research questions' point of view it has been more relevant to concentrate on the aspects of networking and the relationships between the participating organizations. The total view in this study is very network-centric, and therefore those theories which have similar point of view have been prioritized. Such is the theory about structural holes by Ronald S. Burt (1992). It has been widely applied; especially his views on constraints affecting players in networks. The purpose of this study has not been to create new theories or to analyse and compare thoroughly the existing theoretical trends. Instead, the existing theories have provided the study with conceptual tools, which have been utilized for supporting the empirical results. The aim has been to create an explanatory case study consisting relevant discussion on the relationship between the network characteristics and the appearance of trust. The conceptual categorization for confidence vs. trust created by Niklas Luhmann (1979) is another important theoretical building block. In most cases, co-operation in networks is initiated by people already trusting in each other and willing to work together. However, personal trust is not sufficient in the long run to sustain the co-operation within the network: more abstract systemic trust described by Luhmann must also emerge. In the networks with different structures and at different development phases, these forms of trust appear at different levels. In this study, Luhmann’s systemic trust as a term has been replaced by the concept of 'trust in network as a system'. Structural characteristics of a network (density, centrality, structural holes etc.) have been selected to explain the creation of social capital and trust. The ability to adapt new information is essential for the development of social capital. Qualitative analysis for development phase has been used, and the Learning Network Maturity Test by Leenamaija Otala (2000) and her work have been applied. Thus, the qualitative characteristics and the structural characteristics of the networks are utilized together, when the creation of social capital and appearance of trust are assessed. Social Network Analysis, questionnaires and interviews have been the research methods. Quantitative and qualitative data have been combined. There is a similarity in viewpoints to research data with Extensive Case Study method, in which different cases are searched by exploring various cases and comparing certain common features between them and generic models. Development of trust, social capital and organizational learning has been explained in the study by comparing the networks in hand. Being a case study, it doesn't have targets to provide with general results and findings like conventional surveys. However, in this work phenomena and mechanisms related to them are interpreted from the empirical data. Key finding of this study is that the networks with high structural equality and clear target setting enable building trust to the network as a system. When systemic trust is present, e.g. changes in personnel involved in the co-operation won't hinder the network from remaining operational. On the other hand, if the players are not well motivated to co-operate, if the network is extremely centralized structurally, or if the network has players holding very much more beneficial position compared to the others, systemic trust won't develop: trust tends to remain at the personal level, and is directed to some players only. Such networks won't generate results and benefits to its players, and most probably they won’t live very long. In other words, learning networks cannot solely be based on willingness to learn, but also on willingness to co-operate.
