The freshwater testate amoeba Difflugia biwae Kawamura, 1918, isolated from Mulan Lake, Hubei Province, China is investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The morphology, biometry and distribution of this little known species are supplied. After careful comparison with three other similar species, including D. delicatula Gauthier-Livre et Thomas, D. elegans Penard and D. oblonga caudata Stepanek, we believe that the characteristics of smooth fusiform shell, conspicuous great collar flare (always larger than body-width) around the aperture, constriction behind the aperture and a somewhat curved aboral horn set D. biwae apart from all other Difflugia species. This species shows a great diversity in total length, collar height and aboral horn length which have high variability (CV between 11.76 and 24.52). However, body width, collar diameter, neck width, body length and aperture diameter are fairly constant with low variability (CV between 5.34 and 8.79) which shows a remarkable uniformity of D. biwae. Also, the size frequency distributions of both body width and body length yield bell-shaped (normally distributed) curves and indicate that D. biwae is a size-monomorphic species, characterized by a main-size class and a small size range. D. biwae is probably endemic to East Asia (China and Japan) because it has such a large size (165-306 mu m) that it would have been easily found in Europe and North America, if it were there. Consequently, D. biwae must have a restricted geographical distribution, disproving the old hypothesis that microscopic organisms are cosmopolitan.

By using modern techniques of isotope dilution, high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry and multiple ions detection, an effective cleanup, qualitative and quantitative method was developed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/F) and polychlorinated biphenyls analysis. Based on the chromatographic relative retentions of PCDD/F, a software was established for automatic peak recognition of all the isomers from tetra- to octachlorine PCDD/F. It ensured good reliability and accuracy of the analytical data.

The magnetic properties of RCo5Ga7 (R = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) compounds which crystallize in the ScFe6Ga6-type structure have been studied. The compounds with R, Y, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er display behaviour similar to semiconductors. The Co transition metal sublattice is ferrimagnetic with a very low spontaneous magnetization. The ferrimagnetic ordering observed for R = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er is due to the transition metal sublattice with transition temperatures at about 295 K. At low temperatures, the magnetic ordering for R Tb, Dy, Ho and Er is due to the rare-earth sublattice, which is ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature below 5 K. By fitting the linear part of the inverse magnetization, the effective magnetic moment of the R ion is found to be close to its expected theoretical value, with paramagnetic Curie temperatures below 5 K. Due to the paramagnetic nature of the R sublattice above 60 K, the ferrimagnetic ordering temperature of the Co sublattice does not vary with the type of rare-earth ion. The irreversibility of the magnetization of YCo5Ga7, as measured in zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) states, is attributed to movement of domain walls. Application of a large enough applied field completes the movement of the domain wall from the low-temperature to the high-temperature one at 5 K. With a very low magnetic field 100 Oe, the difference between the ZFC and the FC shrinks. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Er photoluminescence (Er PL) and dangling bonds (DBs) of annealed Er-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiN:H(Er)) with various concentrations of nitrogen are studied in the temperature range 62-300 K. Post-annealing process is employed to change the DBs density of a-SiN:H(Er). PL spectra, DBs density and H, N concentrations are measured. The intensity of Er PL displays complicated relation with Si DBs density within the annealing temperature range 200-500 degreesC. The intensity of Er PL first increases with decreasing density of Si dangling bonds owing to the structural relaxation up to 250 degreesC, and continues to increase up to 350 degreesC even though the density of Si DBs increases due to the improvement of symmetry environment of Er3+. Six-stacked InAs/In0.52Al0.48As self-assembled quantum wires (QWRs) on InP(001) by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) have been studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and polarized PL measurements. We obtained the chemical lattice fringe (CLF) image of InAs self-assembled QWRs embedded in the In0.52Al0.48As matrix by the interference between the (002)-diffracted beam and the transmitted beam in the image plane of the objective lens. The results show that the InAs QWRs were bounded by (113), (001) and (114) facets. Both the size and strain distribution in QWRs were determined. It was found that with the growth of successive periods, the height and height fluctuation of InAs QWRs decreased from the bottom period to the upper one. Some suggestions are put forward for further improving the uniformity of the stacked InAs QWRs. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ZnO vertical well-aligned nanorods were grown on A1N/sapphire by using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. We first observed the ZnO net-like structures under the nanorods. The different strain was determined in these two layers by using double crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, which revealed that the nanorods were relaxed and the net-like structures were strained. The optical properties of two layers were measured by using the cathodoluminescence and photo luminescence and the shift of UV peaks was observed. Moreover, the growth mechanism of the ZnO nanorods and the net-like structures is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1.5 mu m n-type InGaAsP/InGaAsP modulation-doped multiple quantum well (MD-MQW) DFB lasers have been fabricated successfully by low pressure metal organic chemical vapour deposition (LP-MOCVD) technology. The experimental results indicate that n-type MD-MQWs can effectively reduce the threshold Current compared with conventional multiple quantum well DFB lasers. Theoretical analysis indicates that such an effect is due to the much smaller absorption loss and lower Auger recombination, compared with that in an undoped MQW structure. Moreover, the introduction of n-type dopant of suitable levels of concentration in the barrier layers enhances the dynamic characteristics of DFB lasers, due to a coupling between the adjacent quantum well layers and tunnelling-assisted injection, which can reduce the relatively long capture time and increase the effective differential gain 1/X dG/dn .

For a class of nonlinear dynamical systems, the adaptive controllers are investigated using direction basis function (DBF) in this paper. Based on the criterion of Lyapunov' stability, DBF is designed which guarantees that the output of the controlled system asymptotically tracks the reference signals. Finally, the simulation shows the good tracking effectiveness of the adaptive controller.

In this paper, an efficient iterative discrete Fourier transform (DFT) -based channel estimator with good performance for multiple-input and multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems such as IEEE 802.11n which retain some sub-carriers as null sub-carriers (or virtual carriers) is proposed. In order to eliminate the mean-square error (MSE) floor effect existed in conventional DFT-based channel estimators, we proposed a low-complexity method to detect the significant channel impulse response (CIR) taps, which neither need any statistical channel information nor a predetermined threshold value. Analysis and simulation results show that the proposed method has much better performance than conventional DFT-based channel estimators and without MSE floor effect.

Oxide-free InGaAlAs waveguides have been grown on the InP substrates patterned with pairs of SiO2 mask stripes using narrow stripe selective MOVPE. The mask stripe width is varied from 0 to 40 pm, while the window region width between a pair of mask stripes is fixed at 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 mu m, respectively. Smooth surface s and flat interfaces are obtained in the selectively grown InQaAlAs waveguides. There exhibit strong dependences of the thickness enhancement ratio and the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum on the mask stripe width and the window region width for the InGaAlAs wavegwdes. A large PL peak wavelength shift of 79 nm and a PL full width of at half maximum (FWHM) of less than 64 meV are obtained simultaneously. Some possible interpretations for our investigations are presented by considering both the migration effect from a masked region (MMR) and the lateral vapor diffusion effect (LVD).

提出了在DBMS中支持多种安全策略的需求,指出了在DBMS中支持多安全策略所面临的主要问题,针对这些问题提出了支持多安全策略的DBMS体系结构(MSDA).在抽象层次上该体系结构与GFAC一致,主要区别表现在性能优化和面向DBMS的适应性改造.为了提高系统性能,MSDA在客体管理器中引入了访问判定缓存.而为了适用于DBMS,MSDA在体系结构层次引入了重写来支持高效的细粒度访问控制.此外还引入了访问上下文栈来支持视图和存储过程这类的受控访问机制.给出了MSDA在LOIS SDBMS v3.0中的实现,并通过实验给出了MSDA对目标系统的性能影响分析.结果表明,MSDA将访问控制判定与实施分离,既能充分解决数据库系统中支持多安全策略的相关问题,同时能够与当前主流关系数据库系统相匹配,不会造成目标系统性能的显著下降.

In order to improve stimulus-response compatibility of touchpad in pen-based user interface, we present the tilt cursor, i.e. a cursor dynamically reshapes itself to providing the 3D orientation cue of pen. We also present two experiments that evaluate the tilt cursor’s performance in circular menu selection and specific marking menu selection tasks. Results show that in a specific marking menu selection task, the tilt cursor significantly outperforms the shape-fixed arrow cursor and the live cursor [4]. In addition, results show that by using the tilt cursor, the response latencies for adjusting drawing directions are smaller than that by using the other two kinds of cursors.
