This paperaims to determine the velocity profile, in transient state, for a parallel incompressible flow known as Couette flow. The Navier-Stokes equations were applied upon this flow. Analytical solutions, based in Fourier series and integral transforms, were obtained for the one-dimensional transient Couette flow, taking into account constant and time-dependent pressure gradients acting on the fluid since the same instant when the plate starts it´s movement. Taking advantage of the orthogonality and superposition properties solutions were foundfor both considered cases. Considering a time-dependent pressure gradient, it was found a general solution for the Couette flow for a particular time function. It was found that the solution for a time-dependent pressure gradient includes the solutions for a zero pressure gradient and for a constant pressure gradient.

Several machining processes have been created and improved in order to achieve the best results ever accomplished in hard and difficult to machine materials. Some of these abrasive manufacturing processes emerging on the science frontier can be defined as ultra-precision grinding. For finishing flat surfaces, researchers have been putting together the main advantages of traditional abrasive processes such as face grinding with constant pressure, fixed abrasives for two-body removal mechanism, total contact of the part with the tool, and lapping kinematics as well as some specific operations to keep grinding wheel sharpness and form. In the present work, both U d-lap grinding process and its machine tool were studied aiming nanometric finishing on flat metallic surfaces. Such hypothesis was investigated on AISI 420 stainless steel workpieces U d-lap ground with different values of overlap factor on dressing (Ud=1, 3, and 5) and grit sizes of conventional grinding wheels (silicon carbide (SiC)=#800, #600, and #300) applying a new machine tool especially designed and built for such finishing. The best results, obtained after 10 min of machining, were average surface roughness (Ra) of 1.92 nm, 1.19-μm flatness deviation of 25.4-mm-diameter workpieces, and mirrored surface finishing. Given the surface quality achieved, the U d-lap grinding process can be included among the ultra-precision abrasive processes and, depending on the application, the chaining steps of grinding, lapping, and polishing can be replaced by the proposed abrasive process.

In this work we introduce a relaxed version of the constant positive linear dependence constraint qualification (CPLD) that we call RCPLD. This development is inspired by a recent generalization of the constant rank constraint qualification by Minchenko and Stakhovski that was called RCRCQ. We show that RCPLD is enough to ensure the convergence of an augmented Lagrangian algorithm and that it asserts the validity of an error bound. We also provide proofs and counter-examples that show the relations of RCRCQ and RCPLD with other known constraint qualifications. In particular, RCPLD is strictly weaker than CPLD and RCRCQ, while still stronger than Abadie's constraint qualification. We also verify that the second order necessary optimality condition holds under RCRCQ.

We study local rigidity and multiplicity of constant scalar curvature metrics in arbitrary products of compact manifolds. Using (equivariant) bifurcation theory we determine the existence of infinitely many metrics that are accumulation points of pairwise non-homothetic solutions of the Yamabe problem. Using local rigidity and some compactness results for solutions of the Yamabe problem, we also exhibit new examples of conformal classes (with positive Yamabe constant) for which uniqueness holds. In accelerating dark energy models, the estimates of the Hubble constant, Ho, from Sunyaev-Zerdovich effect (SZE) and X-ray surface brightness of galaxy clusters may depend on the matter content (Omega(M)), the curvature (Omega(K)) and the equation of state parameter GO. In this article, by using a sample of 25 angular diameter distances of galaxy clusters described by the elliptical beta model obtained through the SZE/X-ray technique, we constrain Ho in the framework of a general ACDM model (arbitrary curvature) and a flat XCDM model with a constant equation of state parameter omega = p(x)/rho(x). In order to avoid the use of priors in the cosmological parameters, we apply a joint analysis involving the baryon acoustic oscillations (BA()) and the (MB Shift Parameter signature. By taking into account the statistical and systematic errors of the SZE/X-ray technique we obtain for nonflat ACDM model H-0 = 74(-4.0)(+5.0) km s(-1) Mpc(-1) (1 sigma) whereas for a fiat universe with constant equation of state parameter we find H-0 = 72(-4.0)(+5.5) km s(-1) Mpc(-1)(1 sigma). By assuming that galaxy clusters are described by a spherical beta model these results change to H-0 = 6(-7.0)(+8.0) and H-0 = 59(-6.0)(+9.0) km s(-1) Mpc(-1)(1 sigma), respectively. The results from elliptical description are in good agreement with independent studies from the Hubble Space Telescope key project and recent estimates based on the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, thereby suggesting that the combination of these three independent phenomena provides an interesting method to constrain the Bubble constant. As an extra bonus, the adoption of the elliptical description is revealed to be a quite realistic assumption. Finally, by comparing these results with a recent determination for a, flat ACDM model using only the SZE/X-ray technique and BAO, we see that the geometry has a very weak influence on H-0 estimates for this combination of data.
