This paper summarises some of the most recent work that has been done on nanoscale ferroelectrics as a result of a joint collaborative research effort involving groups in Queen's University Belfast, the University of Cambridge and the University of St. Andrews. Attempts have been made to observe fundamental effects of reduced size, and increasing morphological complexity, on ferroelectric behaviour by studying the functional response and domain characteristics in nanoscale single crystal material, whose size and morphology have been defined by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) patterning. This approach to nanoshape fabrication has allowed the following broad statements to be made: (i) in single crystal BaTiO3 sheets, permittivity and phase transition behaviour is not altered from that of bulk material down to a thickness of similar to 75 nm; (ii) in single crystal BaTiO3 sheets and nanowires changes in observed domain morphologies are consistent with large scale continuum modeling.

This article aims to reassess F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby (1925), taking into consideration the myth-critical hypotheses of philosopher René Girard. Specifically, this essay will analyse the concepts of mimetic desire, resentment and reprisal violence as emotional components of myth, paying close attention to how the reinterpreted mythical pattern of the novel influences the depiction of such emotions as social traits of corruption. Finally, this article will challenge interpretations that have regarded Gatsby as a successful scapegoat-figure, examining instead how the mythical meanings and structures of the text stage an emotional crisis of frustrated desire and antagonism that ultimately offers no hope of communal restoration.

This essay is an investigation into the existence of primitive thisness, i.e. the property of being a particular individual. I begin with a look at what is commonly taken to be the test for primitive thisness, namely, the failure of application of the principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles for some class of individuals. The two classes that I look at are those of material objects and events. I then discuss Hacking’s objection to the general project of seeking counterexamples to the Identity of Indiscernibles, and consider a response due to Adams. I argue that Hacking’s objection does, indeed, count against the instantiation of thisness by material objects. I go on to argue, however, that Hacking’s objection does not hold against the instantiation of thisness by events, and that this is due to a fundamental disanalogy between space and time.

Carbon stable-isotope analysis showed that individual brown trout Salmo trutta in Loch Lomond adopted strategies intermediate to that of freshwater residency or anadromy, suggesting either repeated movement between freshwater and marine environments, or estuarine residency. Carbon stable-isotope (delta C-13) values from Loch Lomond brown trout muscle tissue ranged from those indicative of assimilation of purely freshwater-derived carbon to those reflecting significant utilization of marine-derived carbon. A single isotope, two-source mixing model indicated that, on average, marine C made a 33% contribution to the muscle tissue C of Loch Lomond brown trout. Nitrogen stable isotope, delta N-15, but not delta C-13 was correlated with fork length suggesting that larger fish were feeding at a higher trophic level but that marine feeding was not indicated by larger body size. Purpose: We have shown previously that exposure to anticancer drugs can trigger the activation of human epidermal receptor survival pathways in colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we examined the role of ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinases) and soluble growth factors in this acute drug resistance mechanism.
Experimental Design: In vitro and in vivo models of CRC were assessed. ADAM-17 activity was measured using a fluorometric assay. Ligand shedding was assessed by ELISA or Western blotting. Apoptosis was assessed by flow cytometry and Western blotting.
Results: Chemotherapy (5-fluorouracil) treatment resulted in acute increases in transforming growth factor-a, amphiregulin, and heregulin ligand shedding in vitro and in vivo that correlated with significantly increased ADAM-17 activity. Small interfering RNA–mediated silencing and pharmacologic inhibition confirmed that ADAM-17 was the principal ADAM involved in this prosurvival response. Furthermore, overexpression of ADAM-17 significantly decreased the effect of chemotherapy on tumor growth and apoptosis. Mechanistically, we found that ADAM-17 not only regulated phosphorylation of human epidermal receptors but also increased the activity of a number of other growth factor receptors, such as insulin-like growth factor-I receptor and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor.
Conclusions: Chemotherapy acutely activates ADAM-17, which results in growth factor shedding, growth factor receptor activation, and drug resistance in CRC tumors. Thus, pharmacologic inhibition of ADAM-17 in conjunction with chemotherapy may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of CRC.
