Introdução: A ambliopia é a principal causa de diminuição da acuidade visual em crianças. O diagnóstico e tratamento precoces são fundamentais para o sucesso terapêutico. A oclusão continua a ser o tratamento mais utilizado nesta patologia. Objectivos: Este estudo teve como objectivo a avaliação da estereopsia em crianças com ambliopia sob terapêutica oclusiva e a sua relação com a acuidade visual. Material e Métodos: Estudo prospectivo que incluiu 35 crianças com ambliopia, por anisometropia, estrabismo ou ambos, a fazer terapêutica oclusiva. Em cada consulta foi avaliada a melhor acuidade visual corrigida (MAVC) e a estereopsia para perto. Resultados: A idade média no início do estudo era de 6,17 anos (intervalo 3-9 anos) e o seguimento médio foi de 17 meses (intervalo 6-24 meses). Após tratamento com oclusão houve uma melhoria da MAVC média de 0,5 para 0,84 (p<0,001) e da estereopsia para perto de 1148 para 415 segundos de arco (p<0,001). Observou-se uma correlação linear significativa entre a melhoria da AV e da estereopsia (0,001
visual está relacionada com uma melhoria da estereopsia.

The aim of this paper is to present the main Portuguese results from a multi-national study on reading format preferences and behaviors from undergraduate students from Polytechnic Institute of Porto (Portugal). For this purpose we apply an adaptation of the Academic Reading Questionnaire previously created by Mizrachi (2014). This survey instrument has 14 Likert-style statements regarding the format influence in the students reading behavior, including aspects such as ability to remember, feelings about access convenience, active engagement with the text by highlighting and annotating, and ability to review and concentrate on the text. The importance of the language and dimension of the text to determine the preference format is also inquired. Students are also asked about the electronic device they use to read digital documents. Finally, some demographic and academic data were gathered. The analysis of the results will be contextualized on a review of the literature concerning youngsters reading format preferences. The format (digital or print) in which a text is displayed and read can impact comprehension, which is an important information literacy skill. This is a quite relevant issue for class readings in academic context because it impacts learning. On the other hand, students preferences on reading formats will influence the use of library services. However, literature is not unanimous on this subject. Woody, Daniel and Baker (2010) concluded that the experience of reading is not the same in electronic or print context and that students prefer print books than e-books. This thesis is reinforced by Ji, Michaels and Waterman (2014) which report that among 101 undergraduates the large majority self-reported to read and learn more when they use printed format despite the fact that they prefer electronically supplied readings instead of those supplied in printed form. On the other side, Rockinson-Szapkiw, et al (2013) conducted a study were they demonstrate that e-textbook is as effective for learning as the traditional textbook and that students who choose e-textbook had significantly higher perceived learning than students who chose to use print textbooks.

This communication aims to present some reflections regarding the importance of information in organizational context, especially in business context. The ability to produce and to share expertise and knowledge among its employees is now a key factor in the success of any organization. However, it’s also true that workers are increasingly feeling that too much information can hurt their performance. The existence of skilled professionals able to organize, evaluate, select and disseminate information in organizations appears to be a prerequisite for success. The skills necessary for the formation of a professional devoted to the management of information and knowledge in the context of business organizations will be analysed. Then data collected in two focus group discussion with students from a graduate course in Business Information, from Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Portugal, a will be examined.

The underground scenarios are one of the most challenging environments for accurate and precise 3d mapping where hostile conditions like absence of Global Positioning Systems, extreme lighting variations and geometrically smooth surfaces may be expected. So far, the state-of-the-art methods in underground modelling remain restricted to environments in which pronounced geometric features are abundant. This limitation is a consequence of the scan matching algorithms used to solve the localization and registration problems. This paper contributes to the expansion of the modelling capabilities to structures characterized by uniform geometry and smooth surfaces, as is the case of road and train tunnels. To achieve that, we combine some state of the art techniques from mobile robotics, and propose a method for 6DOF platform positioning in such scenarios, that is latter used for the environment modelling. A visual monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (MonoSLAM) approach based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), complemented by the introduction of inertial measurements in the prediction step, allows our system to localize himself over long distances, using exclusively sensors carried on board a mobile platform. By feeding the Extended Kalman Filter with inertial data we were able to overcome the major problem related with MonoSLAM implementations, known as scale factor ambiguity. Despite extreme lighting variations, reliable visual features were extracted through the SIFT algorithm, and inserted directly in the EKF mechanism according to the Inverse Depth Parametrization. Through the 1-Point RANSAC (Random Sample Consensus) wrong frame-to-frame feature matches were rejected. The developed method was tested based on a dataset acquired inside a road tunnel and the navigation results compared with a ground truth obtained by post-processing a high grade Inertial Navigation System and L1/L2 RTK-GPS measurements acquired outside the tunnel. Results from the localization strategy are presented and analyzed.

The robotics community is concerned with the ability to infer and compare the results from researchers in areas such as vision perception and multi-robot cooperative behavior. To accomplish that task, this paper proposes a real-time indoor visual ground truth system capable of providing accuracy with at least more magnitude than the precision of the algorithm to be evaluated. A multi-camera architecture is proposed under the ROS (Robot Operating System) framework to estimate the 3D position of objects and the implementation and results were contextualized to the Robocup Middle Size League scenario.

This work presents an automatic calibration method for a vision based external underwater ground-truth positioning system. These systems are a relevant tool in benchmarking and assessing the quality of research in underwater robotics applications. A stereo vision system can in suitable environments such as test tanks or in clear water conditions provide accurate position with low cost and flexible operation. In this work we present a two step extrinsic camera parameter calibration procedure in order to reduce the setup time and provide accurate results. The proposed method uses a planar homography decomposition in order to determine the relative camera poses and the determination of vanishing points of detected lines in the image to obtain the global pose of the stereo rig in the reference frame. This method was applied to our external vision based ground-truth at the INESC TEC/Robotics test tank. Results are presented in comparison with an precise calibration performed using points obtained from an accurate 3D LIDAR modelling of the environment.

We present a novel approach of Stereo Visual Odometry for vehicles equipped with calibrated stereo cameras. We combine a dense probabilistic 5D egomotion estimation method with a sparse keypoint based stereo approach to provide high quality estimates of vehicle’s angular and linear velocities. To validate our approach, we perform two sets of experiments with a well known benchmarking dataset. First, we assess the quality of the raw velocity estimates in comparison to classical pose estimation algorithms. Second, we added to our method’s instantaneous velocity estimates a Kalman Filter and compare its performance with a well known open source stereo Visual Odometry library. The presented results compare favorably with state-of-the-art approaches, mainly in the estimation of the angular velocities, where significant improvements are achieved.

Contextualization is critical in every decision making process. Adequate responses to problems depend not only on the variables with direct influence on the outcomes, but also on a correct contextualization of the problem regarding the surrounding environment. Electricity markets are dynamic environments with increasing complexity, potentiated by the last decades' restructuring process. Dealing with the growing complexity and competitiveness in this sector brought the need for using decision support tools. A solid example is MASCEM (Multi-Agent Simulator of Competitive Electricity Markets), whose players' decisions are supported by another multiagent system – ALBidS (Adaptive Learning strategic Bidding System). ALBidS uses artificial intelligence techniques to endow market players with adaptive learning capabilities that allow them to achieve the best possible results in market negotiations. This paper studies the influence of context awareness in the decision making process of agents acting in electricity markets. A context analysis mechanism is proposed, considering important characteristics of each negotiation period, so that negotiating agents can adapt their acting strategies to different contexts. The main conclusion is that context-dependant responses improve the decision making process. Suiting actions to different contexts allows adapting the behaviour of negotiating entities to different circumstances, resulting in profitable outcomes.

In the traditional paradigm, the large power plants supply the reactive power required at a transmission level and the capacitors and transformer tap changer were also used at a distribution level. However, in a near future will be necessary to schedule both active and reactive power at a distribution level, due to the high number of resources connected in distribution levels. This paper proposes a new multi-objective methodology to deal with the optimal resource scheduling considering the distributed generation, electric vehicles and capacitor banks for the joint active and reactive power scheduling. The proposed methodology considers the minimization of the cost (economic perspective) of all distributed resources, and the minimization of the voltage magnitude difference (technical perspective) in all buses. The Pareto front is determined and a fuzzy-based mechanism is applied to present the best compromise solution. The proposed methodology has been tested in the 33-bus distribution network. The case study shows the results of three different scenarios for the economic, technical, and multi-objective perspectives, and the results demonstrated the importance of incorporating the reactive scheduling in the distribution network using the multi-objective perspective to obtain the best compromise solution for the economic and technical perspectives.

A construção de uma marca gráfica, signo que se pretende que identifique e sintetize uma entidade, deve ser consciente dos processos, objectivos e modus operandi que integram o seu contexto e tornam este tema ainda hoje um ponto central no design de identidade e no design de comunicação. Ainda assim, assistimos ao surgir de tendências que vão uniformizando várias marcas que procuram, passe o paradoxo, demarcar-se. Meme é um conceito originalmente publicado pelo biólogo Richard Dawkins (Dawkins, 1989), que significa ‘replicador’, sendo uma teoria alternativa para explicar a evolução humana (uma teoria que não depende dos genes, mas sim da noção de imitação: da noção de ideias que se reproduzem de pessoa para pessoa, quase como um vírus). O conceito vem da palavra grega mimeme e significa ‘aquilo que é imitado’. Este conceito foi desenvolvido por Susan Blackmore no livro The Meme Machine (1999) e, mais recentemente, esta autora introduz a ideia de teme – o meme tecnológico. Como explicar, por exemplo, que a recente imagem gráfica da NOS (2014) seja tão similar à da POV, criada por Paula Scher em 2007? E por sua vez, qual a razão da identidade visual da Optimus (magma, 2008) ser também, em certa medida, idêntica à da Nokia Trends Lab (criado por Greenspace), projecto do mesmo ramo de operação das telecomunicações? No modus operandi do trabalho de design de identidade entram em acção os media digitais, tanto no momento de concepção, como no momento de exibição e fruição das marcas gráficas. Assim, as aplicações, o software transformaram-se numa espécie de silent designers (conceito proposto por Gorb e Dumas em 1987), uma vez que são verdadeiros orientadores da resposta visual a um determinado problema: impulsionam direcções na linguagem visual do design, resultando em soluções semelhantes. Dada esta mudança de paradigmas que as novas tecnologias forjaram no zeitgeist do design, este artigo – baseado em parte da investigação de doutoramento em design – versa sobre a construção da marca gráfica e sobre a análise das categorias visuais que operam em cada signo gráfico da marca, bem como os medias digitais onde elas se inscrevem. Visualmente podemos constatar que as características dos nossos processos de percepção e as características dos meios de criação e transmissão das marcas actuam de forma a aproximar as soluções gráficas, resultando, por vezes, em temes. Com o objectivo de gerar debate académico sobre o tema da sintaxe e da retórica visual da marca gráfica, procuramos identificar e visualizar variáveis estruturais comuns das marcas realizadas com uma linguagem advinda do Estilo Internacional e das marcas mais recentes, digitais, fluídas e em sistema aberto, com a intenção de contribuir para implementar uma literacia visual que descodifique este signo icónico, dentro da actual realidade.
