Following suggestions of Nekrasov and Siegel, a non-minimal set of fields are added to the pure spinor formalism for the superstring. Twisted (c) over cap = 3 N = 2 generators are then constructed where the pure spinor BRST operator is the fermionic spin-one generator, and the formalism is interpreted as a critical topological string. Three applications of this topological string theory include the super-Poincare covariant computation of multiloop superstring amplitudes without picture-changing operators, the construction of a cubic open superstring field theory without contact-term problems, and a new four-dimensional version of the pure spinor formalism which computes F-terms in the spacetime action.

Some properties of the Clifford algebras Cl-3,Cl-0, Cl-1,Cl-3, Cl-4,Cl-1 similar or equal to C circle times Cl-1,Cl-3 and Cl-2,Cl-4 are presented, and three isomorphisms between the Dirac-Clifford algebra C circle times Cl-1,Cl-3 and Cl-4,Cl-1 are exhibited, in order to construct conformal maps and twistors, using the paravector model of spacetime. The isomorphism between the twistor space inner product isometry group SU( 2,2) and the group $pin(+)(2,4) is also investigated, in the light of a suitable isomorphism between C circle times Cl-1,Cl-3 and Cl-4,Cl-1. After reviewing the conformal spacetime structure, conformal maps are described in Minkowski spacetime as the twisted adjoint representation of $ pin(+)(2,4), acting on paravectors. Twistors are then presented via the paravector model of Clifford algebras and related to conformal maps in the Clifford algebra over the Lorentzian R-4,(1) spacetime. We construct twistors in Minkowski spacetime as algebraic spinors associated with the Dirac-Clifford algebra C circle times Cl-1,Cl-3 using one lower spacetime dimension than standard Clifford algebra formulations, since for this purpose, the Clifford algebra over R-4,R-1 is also used to describe conformal maps, instead of R-2,(4). Our formalism sheds some new light on the use of the paravector model and generalizations.

Two new families of T-dual integrable models of dyonic type are constructed. They represent specific A(n)((1)) singular non-abelian affine Toda models having U(1) global symmetry. Their I-soliton spectrum contains both neutral and U(I)-charged topological solitons sharing the main properties of 4-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs monopoles and dyons. The semiclassical quantization of these solutions as well as the exact counterterms and the coupling constant renormalization are studied. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A bicomplex structure is associated with the Leznov-Saveliev equation of integrable models. The linear problem associated with the zero-curvature condition is derived in terms of the bicomplex linear equation. The explicit example of a non-Abelian conformal affine Toda model is discussed in detail and its conservation laws are derived from the zero-curvature representation of its equation of motion.

We investigate a class of conformal nonabelian-Toda models representing noncompact SL(2, R)/U(1) parafermions (PF) interacting with specific abelian Toda theories and having a global U(1) symmetry. A systematic derivation of the conserved currents, their algebras, and the exact solution of these models are presented. An important property of this class of models is the affine SL(2, R)(q) algebra spanned by charges of the chiral and antichiral nonlocal currents and the U(1) charge. The classical (Poisson brackets) algebras of symmetries VG(n), of these models appear to be of mixed PF-WG(n) type. They contain together with the local quadratic terms specific for the W-n-algebras the nonlocal terms similar to the ones of the classical PF-algebra. The renormalization of the spins of the nonlocal currents is the main new feature of the quantum VA(n)-algebras. The quantum VA(2)-algebra and its degenerate representations are studied in detail. A general construction of affine nonabelian (NA)-Toda models in terms of the axial and vector gauged two loop WZNW model is discussed. They represent integrable perturbations of the conformal sigma -models (with tachyons included) describing (charged) black hole type string backgrounds. We study the off-critical T-duality between certain families of axial and vector type integrable models for the case of affine NA-Toda theories with one global U(1) symmetry. In particular we find the Lie algebraic condition defining a subclass of T-selfdual torsionless NA-Toda models and their zero curvature representation. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

We consider a real Lagrangian off-critical submodel describing the soliton sector of the so-called conformal affine sl(3)((1)) Toda model coupled to matter fields. The theory is treated as a constrained system in the context of Faddeev-Jackiw and the symplectic schemes. We exhibit the parent Lagrangian nature of the model from which generalizations of the sine-Gordon (GSG) or the massive Thirring (GMT) models are derivable. The dual description of the model is further emphasized by providing the relationships between bilinears of GMT spinors and relevant expressions of the GSG fields. In this way we exhibit the strong/weak coupling phases and the (generalized) soliton/particle correspondences of the model. The sl(n)((1)) case is also outlined. The role played by torsion in gravitation is critically reviewed. After a description of the problems and controversies involving the physics of torsion, a comprehensive presentation of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity is made. According to this theory, curvature and torsion are alternative ways of describing the gravitational field, and consequently related to the same degrees of freedom of gravity. However, more general gravity theories, like for example Einstein-Cartan and gauge theories for the Poincare and the affine groups, consider curvature and torsion as representing independent degrees of freedom. By using an active version of the strong equivalence principle, a possible solution to this conceptual question is reviewed. This solution ultimately favors the teleparallel point of view, and consequently the completeness of general relativity. A discussion of the consequences for gravitation is presented.

The Lagrangian formalism for the N = 2 supersymmetric sinh-Gordon model with a jump defect is considered. The modified conserved momentum and energy are constructed in terms of border functions. The supersymmetric Backlund transformation is given and an one-soliton solution is obtained. The Lax formulation based on the affine super Lie algebra sl(2, 2) within the space split by the defect leads to the integrability of the model and henceforth to the existence of an infinite number of constants of motion.

After adding 7 auxiliary scalars to the d = 10 super-Yang-Mills action, 9 of the 16 supersymmetries close off-shell. In this Letter, these 9 supersymmetry generators are related by dimensional reduction to scalar and vector topological symmetry in N = 2, d = 8 twisted super-Yang-Mills. Furthermore, a gauge-invariant superspace action is constructed for d = 10 super-Yang-Mills where the superfelds depend on 9 anticommuting theta variables. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

In this paper we discuss the algebraic construction of the mKdV hierarchy in terms of an affine Lie algebra (s) over capl(2). An interesting novelty araises from the negative even grade sector of the affine algebra leading to nonlinear integro-differential equations admiting non-trivial vacuum configuration. These solitons solutions are constructed systematically from generalization of the dressing method based on non zero vacua. The sub-hierarchies admiting such class of solutions are classified.
