Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from a ruthenium complex, mer-[RuCl3(dppb)(py)] (dppb = PPh2(CH2)(4)PPh2; py = pyridine) (Rupy), and from mixtures with varied amounts of polyaniline (PANi) were fabricated. Molecular-level interactions between the two components are investigated by surface potential, dc conductivity and Raman spectroscopy measurements, particularly for the mixed film with 10% of Rupy. For the latter, the better miscibility led to an interaction with Rupy inducing a decrease in the conducting state of PANi, as observed in the Raman spectra and conductivity measurement. The interaction causes the final film properties to depend on the concentration of Rupy, and this was exploited to produce a sensor array made up of sensing units consisting of 11-layer LB films from pure PANi, pure Rupy and mixtures with 10 and 30% of Rupy. It is shown that the combination of only four non-specific sensing units allows one to distinguish the basic tastes detected by biological systems, viz. saltiness, sweetness, sourness and bitterness, at the muM level. We report on the use of dynamic scale theory and fractal analyses in a study of the growth stages of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of polyaniline and a neutral biphosphinic ruthenium complex, namely mer-[ RuCl3 (dppb)(py)] (dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphine) buthane, py = pyridine), Rupy. The LB films were deposited onto indium-tin-oxide substrates and characterized with atomic force microscopy. From the granular morphology exhibited by the films one could infer growth processes inside and outside the grains. Growth outside was found to follow the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model, with fractal dimensions of about 2.7. As one would expect, inside the grains the morphology is close to a Euclidian surface with fractal dimension of about 2.

Ceftazidime shows two main polarographic reduction peaks at pH 4.0, that at -0.45 V owing to reduction of the C=N bond in the methylethoxyimino group and that at -1.00 V owing to the reductive elimination of pyridine: the first peak is particularly suitable for the determination of ceftazidime. Ceftazidime can also be determined indirectly using the tensammetric peak at -0.60 V (in Britton-Robinson buffer pH 9.5) of pyridine liberated on hydrolysis. Ceftazidime can be determined in urine using the direct method only after Cls solid phase extraction, but it can be determined directly in the urine by hydrolysing it and using the pyridine peak. A more direct and efficient route to the syntheses of [Ru(NH3)(4)(X-Y)](BF4)(2), where X-Y can be 2-acetylpyridine (2-acpy) or 2-benzoylpyridine (2-bzpy), based on the reactions of [RuCl(NH3)(5)]Cl-2 with these ortho-substituted azines is described. The [Ru(2-acpy)(NH3)(4)](BF4)(2) and [Ru(NH3)(5)(2-bzpy)](BF4)(2) complexes have a molar conductance of 328 and 292 Ohm(-1) cm(2) mol(-1), respectively, corresponding to a 1:2 species in solution. These complexes showed two intense absorption bands around 620-650 and 380 nm, the energies of which are solvent dependent, decreasing with the increase of the Gutman's donor number of the solvent, and were assigned as metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT). The complexes have oxidation potentials (Ru-II/III) of +0.380 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and +0.400 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy), and reduction potentials (X-Y0/-) of -1.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and -0.950 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy) on CF3COOH/NaCF3COO at pH=3.0, scan rate 100 mV s(-1), [Ru]=1.0x10(-3) mol l(-1). Both processes show a coupled chemical reaction. Upon oxidation of the metal center, the MLCT absorption bands are bleached and restored upon subsequent reduction. In order to confirm the structure of the complexes a detailed LH NMR investigation was performed in d(6)-acetone. Further confirmation of the structure was obtained by recording the N-15 NMR spectrum of [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-bzpy)](2+) in d(6)-DMSO using the INEPT pulse sequence improving the sensitivity of N-15 by polarization transfer from the protons to the N-15. The Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE) experiments were made qualitatively for [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-acpy)](2+), and showed that H-6 of the pyridine is close to a NH3 proton, which should then be in a cis position, and, hence, confirming that acpy is acting as a bidentate ligand. This work presents the synthesis of the complex [Fe(L)(2)](PF6)(2) (.) H2O (L = 2,6-bis[1-(3-pyrrol-1-yl-propylimino)ethyl]pyridine (Fig. 1) and its characterization through elemental and thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and UV-Vis, IR and H-1 NMR spectra. The use of this compound in the preparation of modified electrodes is also described. The best electrochemical parameters to achieve optimum film formation have been established and the effects of both the upper-limit of the applied scanning potential (E-aul) and the number of scans on the efficiency of film formation have been investigated. Film surface morphology has been characterized by atomic force microscopy. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The influence of the equatorial ligand on the electrochemical oxidation of the compounds [H3CCo(chel)B], where chel is bis (dimethylglyoximato), (DH)2; bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediimine, salen; bis(salicylaldehyde) o-phenylenediimine, salophen; bis(salicylaldehyde)cyclohexylenediimine, salcn; bis(acetylacetone) ethylenediimine, bae; and where B is pyridine when chel is (DH2), and dimethylformamide (DMF) when chel represents a Schiff base (salen, salcn, salophen and bae), was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry in DMF, 0.2 M in tetraethylammonium perchlorate, between 25 and -25°C, with a platinum disk working electrode. Absorption spectra in the visible and near ultraviolet regions for these compounds in DMF at 25°C were obtained. The complexes exhibit a reversible one-electron oxidation, at -20°C with scan rates >0.5 V s-; chemical reactions following electron transfer are not detected under these conditions. At slower potential or higher temperatures, the oxidized product decomposes chemically in a solvent-assisted (or nucleophile-assisted) reaction, yielding products which are electroactive in the applied potential range. The behavior of the [H3CCo (DH2)py] derivative is better described as a quasi-reversible charge transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Experimental evidence suggests that in the case of the [H3CCo(bae)] derivative at -20°C, the reactive -species is pentacoordinated and weakly adsorbed at the electrode surface. The value of E 1 2 and the energies of the first two absorption bands in the visible spectra reveal the ability of the studied complexes to donate and to delocalize electronic charge. © 1982.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) non-peptide antagonists were injected i.c.v. (6.25-200 nmol, n = 5-8 rats/group): In sodium replete rats, losartan (AT1 receptor antagonist) induced an increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and in heart rate (HR) by 3rd ventricular (3rdV) injection, and a weaker pressor response and bradycardia by 4th ventricular (4thV) injection. PD123319 (AT2 receptor antagonist) induced an increase in MAP and in HR by 3rdV injection, and an increase in MAP and no alteration in HR by 4thV injection. In sodium deplete (furosemide plus removal of ambient sodium for 24 h) rats, losartan induced an increase in MAP and no alteration in HR by 3rdV injection, and no alteration in MAP and bradycardia by 4thV injection. PD123319 induced an increase in MAP and in HR by 3rdV injection, and an increase in MAP and bradycardia by 4thV injection. Thus, there was no fall in MAP by central injections of Ang II antagonists. Intravenous injection of losartan, but not of PD123319, induced a fall in MAP in both sodium replete and sodium deplete animals. Therefore, losartan and PD123319 can have similar effects on MAP and HR when injected intracerebroventricularly, although some differences are also present. The bradycardia is consistent with an withdrawal of Ang II inhibitory action on baroreflex.

Bioactivity-guided fractionation of several bioactive extracts obtained from Cerrado and Atlantic Forest plant species led to the isolation of potent DNA-damaging piperidine 1-5 and guanidine alkaloids 6-9 from Cassia leptophylla and Pterogyne nitens respectively, two common Leguminosae from Atlantic Forest. By means of biotechnological approach on Maytenus aquifolium, a species from Cerrado, moderate DNA-damaging sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloid 10-11 was isolated. Bioassay-guided fractionation on Casearia sylvestris, a medicinal plant species found in Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, led to the isolation of clerodane diterpenes 12-13 which showed effect on DNA. In addition, we have reported several interesting potent antifungal iridoids: 1β-hydroxy-dihydrocornin (14), 1α-hydroxy-dihydrocornin (15), α-gardiol (16), β-gardiol (17), plumericin (18), isoplumericin (19), 11-O-trans-caffeoylteucrein (20); ester derivative: 2-methyl-4-hydroxy-butyl-caffeoate (21), amide N-[7-(3'.4'-methylenedioxyphenyl)-2Z, 4Z-heptadienoyl] pyrrolidine (22) and triterpene viburgenin (23).

Objective - We determined the effects of losartan and PD 123319 (antagonists of the AT1 and AT2 angiotensin receptors, respectively), and [Sar1, Ala8] ANG II (a relatively peptide antagonist of angiotensin receptors) injected into the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) on water and 3% NaCl intake, and the diuretic, natriuretic, and pressor effects induced by administration of angiotensin II (ANG II) into the medial septal area (MSA) of conscious rats. Methods - Holtzman rats were used. Animals were anesthetized with tribromoethanol (20 mg) per 100 grams of body weight, ip. A stainless steel guide cannula was implanted into the MSA and PVN. All drugs were injected in 0.5-μl volumes for 10-15 seconds. Seven days after brain surgery, water and 3% NaCl intake, urine and sodium excretion, and arterial blood pressure were measured. Results - Losartan (40 nmol) and [Sar1, Ala8] ANG II (40 nmol) completely eliminated whereas PD 123319 (40 nmol) partially blocked the increase in water and sodium intake and the increase in arterial blood pressure induced by ANG II (10 nmol) injected into the MSA. The PVN administration of PD 123319 and [Sar1, Ala8] ANG II blocked whereas losartan attenuated the diuresis and natriuresis induced by MSA administration of ANG II. Conclusion - MSA involvement with PVN on water and sodium homeostasis and arterial pressure modulation utilizing ANGII receptors is suggested.

An alternative method using liquid chromatography with UV detection for the determination of prochloraz as 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in mango, papaya and orange is described. Ethyl acetate, acetone and dichloromethane were tested for extraction of prochloraz from the fruits. After extraction the residue of prochloraz was derivatized with pyridine hydrochloride. The analysis was carried out using liquid chromatography with UV detection and gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Average recoveries of prochloraz from spiked fruits (0.1 and 0.2 mg kg-1) ranged from 80% to 94% with relative standard deviations between 5.6% and 12.6% (n=8). Detection and quantification limits were 0.05 and 0.1 mg kg-1, respectively. The LC-UV method was applied to mango and papaya samples submitted to dip treatment with a prochloraz formulation under laboratory conditions. In addition, fruit samples obtained from local markets were analysed. ©2005 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

The present paper describes the one-pot procedure for the formation of self-assembled thin films of two silanes on the model oxidized silicon wafer, SiO2/Si. SiO2/Si is a model system for other surfaces, such as glass, quartz, aerosol, and silica gel. MALDI-TOF MS with and without a matrix, XPS, and AFM have confirmed the formation of self-assembled thin films of both 3-imidazolylpropyltrimethoxysilane (3-IPTS) and 4-(N- propyltriethoxysilane-imino)pyridine (4-PTSIP) on the SiO2/Si surface after 30 min. Longer adsorption times lead to the deposition of nonreacted 3-IPTS precursors and the formation of agglomerates on the 3-IPTS monolayer. The formation of 4-PTSIP self-assembled layers on SiO2/Si is also demonstrated. The present results for the flat SiO2/Si surface can lead to a better understanding of the formation of a stationary phase for affinity chromatography as well as transition-metal-supported catalysts on silica and their relationship with surface roughness and ordering. The 3-IPTS and 4-PTSIP modified SiO2/Si wafers can also be envisaged as possible built-on-silicon thin-layer chromatography (TLC) extraction devices for metal determination or N-heterocycle analytes, such as histidine and histamine, with on-spot MALDI-TOF MS detection. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. The median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) is one of most important site of the lamina terminalis implicated in the regulation of hydro electrolytic and cardiovascular balance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of L-Type calcium channel antagonist, nifedipine, on the increase of median arterial blood pressure (MAP) induce by angiotensin II (ANG II) injected into the MnPO. The influence of nitric oxide (NO) on nifedipine antipressor action has also been studied by utilizing N W-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (40 μg 0.2 μL -1) a NO synthase inhibitor (NOSI), 7-nitroindazole (7-NIT) (40 μg 0.2 μL -1), a specific neuronal NO synthase inhibitor (nNOSI) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (20 μg 0.2 μL -1) a NO donor agent. We have also investigated the central role of losartan and PD123349 (20 nmol 0.2 μL -1), AT 1 and AT 2, respectively (selective non peptide ANG II receptor antagonists), in the pressor effect of ANG II (25 pmol 0.2 μL -1) injected into the MnPO. Male Wistar rats weighting 200-250 g, with cannulae implanted into the MnPO were utilized. Losartan injected into the MnPO, prior to ANG II, blocked the pressor effect of ANGII. PD 123319 only decreased the pressor effect of ANG II. Rats pre-treated with either 50 μg 0.2 μL -1 or 100 μg 0.2 μL -1 of nifedipine, followed by 25 pmol 0.2 μL -1 of ANG II, decreased ANG II-pressor effect. L-NAME potentiated the pressor effect of ANG II. 7-NIT injected prior to ANG II into the MnPO also potentiated the pressor effect of ANGII but with less intensity than that of L-NAME. SNP injected prior to ANG II blocked the pressor effect of ANG II. The potentiation action of L-NAME and 7-NIT on ANG II-pressor effect was blocked by prior injection of nifedipine. The results described in this study provide evidence that calcium channels play important roles in central ANG II-induced pressor effect. The structures containing NO in the brain, such as MnPO, include both endothelial and neuronal cells, which might be responsible for the influence of nifedipine on the pressor effect of ANG II. These data have shown the functional relationship between L-Type calcium channel and a free radical gas NO in the MnPO, on the control of ANG II-induced pressor effect acting in AT 1 and AT 2 receptors.

We study the effects of angiotensin receptors antagonists, arginine vasopressin receptor antagonist, L-arginine and L-NAME, injected into supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus (SON) on sodium intake induced by the injection of angiotensin II (ANGII). Holtzman rats weighing 200-250 g with canulae implanted into the SON were used. The drugs were injected in 0.5 μL over 30-60 sec. Sodium intake after injection of saline SAL+SAL 0.15 M NaCl was 0.10±00.1 mL 2 h -1; SAL+ANGII injected into SON increased sodium intake. Losartan injected prior to ANGII into SON decreased sodium intake induced by ANGII. PD123319 injected prior to ANGII produced no changes in sodium intake induced by ANGII. AVPA receptor V 1 antagonist injected prior to ANGII reduced sodium intake with a less intensity than losartan. L-arginine injected prior to ANGII decreases sodium intake at a same intensity than losartan. L-NAME injected prior to ANGII potentiated sodium intake induced by ANGII. Losartan injected simultaneously with L-arginine prior to ANGII blocked the natriorexigenic effect of ANGII. These results confirm the importance of SON in the control of sodium intake. Also suggest that both AT 1 and arginine vasopressin V 1 receptors interact with nitrergic pathways within the SON influencing the sodium metabolism by changing sodium appetite induced by ANGII. © 2007 Asian Network for Scientific Information.
