A high contrast laser writing technique based on laser induced efficient chemical oxidation in insitu textured Ge films is demonstrated. Free running Nd-YAG laser pulses are used for irradiating the films. The irradiation effects have been characterised using optical microscopy, electron spectroscopy and microdensitometry. The mechanism for the observed contrast has been identified as due to formation of GeO2 phase upon laser irradiation using X-ray initiated Auger spectroscopy (XAES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The contrast in the present films is found to be nearly five times more than that known due to GeO phase formation in similar films.

The electrical resistivity of bulk GexTe100-x glasses has been measured as a function of temperature and pressure. Under high pressure, all the glasses were found to undergo sharp discontinuous transitions from glassy semiconductors to crystalline metal. Several of the observed properties such as the transition pressure, conductivity activation energy and pre-exponential factor, exhibit anomalous trends at a composition x = 20. These results suggest that the x = 20 composition in the Ge-Te system should possess salient structural features. A model based on the unusual stability of structural units is proposed for explaining the anomaly at 20 at.% Ge concentration.

A tactical gaming model for wargame play between two teams A and B through a control unit C has been developed, which can be handled using IBM personal computers (XT and AT models) having a local area network facility. This simulation model involves communication between the teams involved, logging and validation of the actions of the teams by the control unit. The validation procedure uses statistical and also monte carlo techniques. This model has been developed to evaluate the planning strategies of the teams involved. This application software using about 120 files has been developed in BASIC, DBASE and the associated network software. Experience gained in the instruction courses using this model will also be discussed.

The properties of thin films depend to a large extent upon their mechanical stability which in turn is dependent on the intrinsic stresses developed during evaporation. This paper describes a simple method for the measurement of stresses in thin films by the use of real-time holographic interferometry.

Radiometric determination methods, such as alpha spectrometry require long counting times when low activities are to be determined. Mass spectrometric techniques as Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) have shown several advantages compared to traditional methods when measuring long-lived radionuclides. Mass spectrometric methods for determination of very low concentrations of elemental isotopes, and thereby isotopic ratios, have been developed using a variety of ion sources. Although primarily applied to the determination of the lighter stable element isotopes and radioactive isotopes in geological studies, the techniques can equally well be applied to the measurement of activity concentrations of long-lived low-level radionuclides in various samples using “isotope dilution” methods such as those applied in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Due to the low specific activity of long-lived radionuclides, many of these are more conveniently detected using mass spectrometric techniques. Mass spectrometry also enables the individual determination of Pu-239 and Pu-240, which cannot be obtained by alpha spectrometry. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) are rapidly growing techniques for the ultra-trace analytical determination of stable and long-lived isotopes and have a wide potential within environmental science, including ecosystem tracers and radio ecological studies. Such instrumentation, of course needs good radiochemical separation, to give best performance. The objectives of the project is to identify current needs and problems within low-level determination of long-lived radioisotopes by ICP-MS, to perform intercalibration and development and improvement of ICP-MS methods for the measurement of radionuclides and isotope ratios and to develop new methods based on modified separation chemistry applied to new auxiliary equipment.

The development of high-quality tin monosulphide (SnS) layers is one of the crucial tasks in the fabrication of efficient SnS-based optoelectronic devices. Reduction of strain between film and the substrate by using an appropriate lattice-matched (LM) substrate is a new attempt for the growth of high-quality layers. In this view, the SnS films were deposited on LM Al substrate using the thermal evaporation technique with a low rate of evaporation. The as-grown SnS films were characterized using appropriate techniques and the obtained results are discussed by comparing them with the properties of SnS films grown on amorphous substrate under the same conditions. From structural analysis of the films, it is noticed that the SnS films deposited on amorphous substrate have crystallites that were oriented along different directions. However, the SnS crystallites grown on Al substrate exhibited epitaxial growth along the 101] direction. Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman studies reveal that the films grown on Al substrate have better optical properties than those of the films grown on amorphous substrates. In this study we present approximate analytical expressions for estimating the variation in multipole expansion coefficients as a function of the size of the apertures in the electrodes in axially symmetric (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) ion trap ion traps. Following the approach adopted in our earlier studies which focused on the role of apertures to fields within the traps, here too, the analytical expression we develop is a sum of two terms, A(n,noAperiure), the multipole expansion coefficient for a trap with no apertures and A(n,dueToAperture), the multipole expansion coefficient contributed by the aperture. A(n,noAperture) has been obtained numerically and A(n,dueToAperture) is obtained from the n th derivative of the potential within the trap. The expressions derived have been tested on two 3D geometries and two 2D geometries. These include the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the cylindrical ion trap (CIT) for 3D geometries and the linear ion trap (LIT) and the rectilinear ion trap (RIT) for the 2D geometries. Multipole expansion coefficients A(2) to A(12), estimated by our analytical expressions, were compared with the values obtained numerically (using the boundary element method) for aperture sizes varying up to 50% of the trap dimension. In all the plots presented, it is observed that our analytical expression for the variation of multipole expansion coefficients versus aperture size closely follows the trend of the numerical evaluations for the range of aperture sizes considered. The maximum relative percentage errors, which provide an estimate of the deviation of our values from those obtained numerically for each multipole expansion coefficient, are seen to be largely in the range of 10-15%. The leading multipole expansion coefficient, A(2), however, is seen to be estimated very well by our expressions, with most values being within 1% of the numerically determined values, with larger deviations seen for the QIT and the LIT for large aperture sizes.
