Del papel al celuloide: la adaptación cinematográfica de la novela Las tres ratas, de Alfredo Pareja Diezcanseco (Del Fabulador)

En este ensayo el autor analiza la manera en que fue adaptada, en 1946, la novela Las tres ratas, describe aspectos de las dos narrativas (literaria y fílmica), para determinar qué elementos de la novela fueron conservados en la adaptación argentina, y cuáles fueron cambiados u omitidos. Sostiene que la película fracasa en la reconstrucción de la esencia de la obra, principalmente porque se omite el segundo nivel discursivo de la novela (la aproximación a la caída del liberalismo en el Ecuador), además, se cambia el carácter de varios personajes (la hermana mayor, el novio de Ana Luisa, o el usurero Don Horacio), cuyos rasgos son importantes pues aportan al conflicto, al tono y ambiente de la historia, finalmente, la adaptación omite la recreación del ambiente de fracaso del proyecto político liberal, para inscribir la historia en clave de melodrama.

Cristianización del Imaginario y religiosidad de los Indios de Puerto Viejo durante la Colonia

El espíritu de esta investigación es el de desentrañar el proceso dinámico a través del cual se conjugaron la religión y religiosidad occidental cristiana con la religiosidad de los aborígenes en una zona periférica de los Andes Septentrionales. Conocer qué características particulares modelaron estos indios en el contexto de la América andina colonial. A su vez, relacionar esa dimensión cultural, con las prácticas concretas de supervivencia que se realizaban en un lugar dado. En tanto que el período cubierto en nuestro trabajo es el de la Colonia, el espacio concreto es el Partido de Puerto Viejo, perteneciente a la antigua provincia de Guayaquil, ubicada en la costa de los Andes Septentrionales. La tesis está estructurada en función de una cronología de la interacción cultural. El primer capítulo aborda el momento del encuentro/conquista, pero no desde la perspectiva de los hechos, sino de los imaginarios de los europeos y los aborígenes. A través de cada uno de los cronistas europeos, mestizos e indios que dejaron su testimonio sobre Puerto Viejo, buscamos penetrar en su mundo interior para conocer qué tipos de mitos usan para decodificar la nueva realidad de la Mar del Sur, cuyo primer territorio asequible es Puerto Viejo. Luego, qué reconfiguración se producen en sus categorías mentales a causa del impacto de la otra realidad hallada, en el caso de los cronistas occidentales. A través de un segundo capítulo buscamos ubicarnos en la otra orilla y establecer cuáles son los rasgos esenciales de la religiosidad de los indios de Puerto Viejo, vigentes en el momento de la Conquista, tarea aún más compleja que la anterior, porque para ello debemos utilizar los mismos testimonios de los cronistas europeos, aunque apelamos también al de los mestizos e indígenas, los cuales, sin embargo, estás más relacionados con la cultura Inca. En el tercer capítulo tratamos el aspecto del impacto cultural de la Conquista, la iniciación del proceso de evangelización, extirpación y sustitución de idolatrías; introducción de las doctrinas, cultos y otras instituciones religiosas; y finalmente la práctica de rituales. En suma, es en esta parte donde intentamos conocer el carácter de la transición e interacción cultural y qué tipo de religiosidad se deriva de ello en los indios. En un capítulo final analizamos las dimensiones concretas en donde se desenvuelve la religiosidad de los indios de Puerto Viejo. Operamos la relación entre este espacio real biodiverso, donde está la geografía sagrada y las prácticas indígenas para la supervivencia, es decir, las relaciones de producción, extracción, comercio y poder. Así mismo, esas prácticas para la supervivencia nos llevaron a tratar el tema del sistema de saberes que también se inserta en la tupida red que constituye la cultura de los indios de Puerto Viejo. El aspecto de los imaginarios religiosos y luego, la religiosidad misma de los indios de Puerto Viejo durante la Colonia, se tropieza con el problema de las fuentes primarias. No obstante se puede apelar a los cronistas tempranos, entre los cuales utilizamos a los de origen hispano – soldados, sacerdotes y escribanos oficiales -, y a los de origen indígena y mestizo. Varios de ellos mencionan brevemente el momento del primer encuentro y Conquista de Puerto Viejo. Utilizamos también informes oficiales y crónicas tardías para hallar respuestas sobre los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII. Analizamos igualmente, documentos del Archivo de la Diócesis de Cuenca, que por lo demás, no están catalogados, así como algunas copias de originales que permanecen en La Casa de Horacio de Portoviejo. Así mismo, tomamos eventualmente transcripciones parciales de documentos primarios que aparecen en otros trabajos y cuyos originales no están localizados en los archivos oficiales.

El Estado boliviano como Estado Social de Derecho

A partir del concepto de "Estado Social y Democrático de Derecho, este trabajo investigativo pretende establecer cuales son las características, funciones y perfiles constitucionales de esta fórmula encargada de articular las instituciones, normas y políticas de un Estado que se auto define como social, con este fm luego de un breve análisis histórico del concepto de Estado, se pasa a establecer las diferencias existentes entre el Estado Liberal y el Estado Social, con sus correspondientes y particulares perfiles, para encarar después el análisis del Estado Social y Democrático de Derecho como la fórmula constitucional acogida por la Constitución del2004 en Bolivia. Partiendo de una clara exposición del régimen económico dentro del cual se desarrollo y se desarrolla Bolivia, el régimen social y sus contradicciones y la diversidad étnica y cultural, este trabajo estudia el contexto histórico-político y económico de Bolivia desde sus origines republicanos, precisando el análisis desde el año 1982, año en el que se reinstauro la democracia en Bolivia, pasando por los sucesos de Febrero y Octubre del 2003, las históricas elecciones del 2005 y la asunción al poder en enero del 2006 del primer presidente indígena, el aymara Evo Morales Ayma. Los importantes sucesos políticos y constitucionales que llevaron a la construcción del nuevo mapa político-constitucional de la actual Bolivia, demuestran que también resulta indispensable realizar un análisis histórico de las reformas constitucionales· mas importantes realizadas en Bolivia, partiendo desde su primera constitución la "Constitución Bolivariana" hasta llegar a las últimas reformas, para terminar haciendo un recorrido a lo largo del actual proceso constituyente boliviano, visualizando además las perspectivas y propuestas de transformación radical del modelo de Estado en Bolivia.

Rejoinder to 'Performance of different synchronisation measures in real data: A case study on electroencephalograhic signals

We agree with Duckrow and Albano [Phys. Rev. E 67, 063901 (2003)] and Quian Quiroga et al. [Phys. Rev. E 67, 063902 (2003)] that mutual information (MI) is a useful measure of dependence for electroencephalogram (EEG) data, but we show that the improvement seen in the performance of MI on extracting dependence trends from EEG is more dependent on the type of MI estimator rather than any embedding technique used. In an independent study we conducted in search for an optimal MI estimator, and in particular for EEG applications, we examined the performance of a number of MI estimators on the data set used by Quian Quiroga et al. in their original study, where the performance of different dependence measures on real data was investigated [Phys. Rev. E 65, 041903 (2002)]. We show that for EEG applications the best performance among the investigated estimators is achieved by k-nearest neighbors, which supports the conjecture by Quian Quiroga et al. in Phys. Rev. E 67, 063902 (2003) that the nearest neighbor estimator is the most precise method for estimating MI.

Dissociation of circadian and light inhibition of melatonin release through forced desynchronization in the rat

Pineal melatonin release exhibits a circadian rhythm with a tight nocturnal pattern. Melatonin synthesis is regulated by the master circadian clock within the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and is also directly inhibited by light. The SCN is necessary for both circadian regulation and light inhibition of melatonin synthesis and thus it has been difficult to isolate these two regulatory limbs to define the output pathways by which the SCN conveys circadian and light phase information to the pineal. A 22-h light-dark (LD) cycle forced desynchrony protocol leads to the stable dissociation of rhythmic clock gene expression within the ventrolateral SCN (vlSCN) and the dorsomedial SCN (dmSCN). In the present study, we have used this protocol to assess the pattern of melatonin release under forced desynchronization of these SCN subregions. In light of our reported patterns of clock gene expression in the forced desynchronized rat, we propose that the vlSCN oscillator entrains to the 22-h LD cycle whereas the dmSCN shows relative coordination to the light-entrained vlSCN, and that this dual-oscillator configuration accounts for the pattern of melatonin release. We present a simple mathematical model in which the relative coordination of a single oscillator within the dmSCN to a single light-entrained oscillator within the vlSCN faithfully portrays the circadian phase, duration and amplitude of melatonin release under forced desynchronization. Our results underscore the importance of the SCN`s subregional organization to both photic input processing and rhythmic output control.

Thiol and Sulfenic Acid Oxidation of AhpE, the One-Cysteine Peroxiredoxin from Mycobacterium tuberculosis: Kinetics, Acidity Constants, and Conformational Dynamics

Drug resistance and virulence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are partially related to the pathogen`s antioxidant systems. Peroxide detoxification in this bacterium is achieved by the heme-containing catalase peroxidase and different two-cysteine peroxiredoxins. M. tuberculosis genome also codifies for a putative one-cysteine peroxiredoxin, alkyl hydroperoxide reductase E (MtAhpE). Its expression was previously demonstrated at a transcriptional level, and the crystallographic structure of the recombinant protein was resolved under reduced and oxidized states. Herein, we report that the conformation of MtAhpE changed depending on its single cysteine redox state, as reflected by different tryptophan fluorescence properties and changes in quaternary structure. Dynamics of fluorescence changes, complemented by competition kinetic assays, were used to perform protein functional studies. MtAhE reduced peroxynitrite 2 orders of magnitude faster than hydrogen peroxide (1.9 x 10(7) M(-1) s(-1) vs 8.2 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1) at pH 7.4 and 25 degrees C, respectively). The latter also caused cysteine overoxidation to sulfinic acid, but at much slower rate constant (40 M(-1) s(-1)). The pK(a) of the thiol in the reduced enzyme was 5.2, more than one unit lower than that of the sulfenic acid in the oxidized enzyme. The pH profile of hydrogen peroxide-mediated thiol and sulfenic acid oxidations indicated thiolate and sulfenate as the reacting species. The formation of sulfenic acid as well as the catalytic peroxidase activity of MtAhpE was demonstrated using the artificial reducing substrate thionitrobenzoate. Taken together, our results indicate that MtAhpE is a relevant component in the antioxidant repertoire of M. tuberculosis probably involved in peroxide and specially peroxynitrite detoxification.

DFT study of the electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of SnO(2)

We report results on the electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of SnO(2) obtained using first-principles calculations performed within the density functional theory. All the calculated phonon frequencies, real and imaginary parts of complex dielectric function, the energy-loss spectrum, the refractive index, the extinction, and the absorption coefficients show good agreement with experimental results. Based on our calculations, the SnO(2) electron and hole effective masses were found to be strongly anisotropic. The lattice contribution to the low-frequency region of the SnO(2) dielectric function arising from optical phonons was also determined resulting the values of E > (1aSyen) (latt) (0) = 14.6 and E > (1ayen) (latt) (0) = 10.7 for directions perpendicular and parallel to the tetragonal c-axis, respectively. This is in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. After adding the electronic contribution to the lattice contribution, a total average value of E >(1)(0) = 18.2 is predicted for the static permittivity constant of SnO(2).

Electronic, vibrational and related properties of group IV metal oxides by ab initio calculations

We present our theoretical results for the structural, electronic, vibrational and optical properties of MO(2) (M = Sn, Zr, Hf and Ti) obtained by first-principles calculations. Relativistic effects are demonstrated to be important for a realistic description of the detailed structure of the electronic frequency-dependent dielectric function, as well as of the carrier effective masses. Based on our results, we found that the main contribution of the high values calculated for the oxides dielectric constants arises from the vibrational properties of these oxides, and the vibrational static dielectric constant values diminish with increasing pressure. CONTINUITY OF GLOBAL ATTRACTORS FOR A CLASS OF NON LOCAL EVOLUTION EQUATIONS

In this work we prove that the global attractors for the flow of the equation partial derivative m(r, t)/partial derivative t = -m(r, t) + g(beta J * m(r, t) + beta h), h, beta >= 0, are continuous with respect to the parameters h and beta if one assumes a property implying normal hyperbolicity for its (families of) equilibria.

Effect of some antioxidants on oxidative DNA damage induced by autoxidation of microquantities of sulfite in the presence of Ni(II)/Gly-Gly-L-His

Ni(II)GGH (GGH, glycylglycyl-L-histidine) reacts rapidly with S(IV), in air-saturated solution, to produce Ni(III)GGH. A mechanism is proposed where Ni(III) oxidizes SO(3)(2-) to SO(3)(center dot-), which reacts with dissolved oxygen to produce SO(5)(center dot-), initiating radical chain reactions. DNA strand breaks and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-20-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) formation were observed in air-saturated solutions containing micromolar concentrations of nickel(II) and S(IV). The efficacies of melatonin, (-)-epigallocatechin-gallate (from green tea), resveratrol, tannic, and ascorbic acids in terms of their inhibitory activities of DNA strand breaks and 8-oxodGuo formation were evaluated.

The reduction of Cu(II)/neocuproine complexes by some polyphenols: Total polyphenols determination in wine samples

A new method is presented for spectrophotometric determination of total polyphenols content in wine. The procedure is a modified CUPRAC method based on the reduction of Cu(II), in hydroethanolic medium (pH 7.0) in the presence of neocuproine (2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline), by polyphenols, yielding a Cu(I) complexes with maximum absorption peak at 450 nm. The absorbance values are linear (r = 0.998, n = 6) with tannic acid concentrations from 0.4 to 3.6 mu mol L(-1). The limit of detection obtained was 0.41 mu mol L(-1) and relative standard deviation 1.2% (1 mu mol L(-1); n = 8). Recoveries between 80% and 110% (mean value of 95%) were calculated for total polyphenols determination in 14 commercials and 2 synthetic wine samples (with and without sulphite). The proposed procedure is about 1.5 more sensitive than the official Folin-Ciocalteu method. The sensitivities of both methods were compared by the analytical responses of several polyphenols tested in each method. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A multicommuted flow-system for spectrophotometric determination of tannin exploiting the Cu(I)/BCA complex formation

A flow system exploiting the multicommutation approach is proposed for spectrophotometric determination of tannin in beverages. The procedure is based on the reduction of Cu(II) in the presence of 4,4`-dicarboxy-2,2`-biquinoline, yielding a complex with maximum absorption at 558 nm. Calibration graph was linear (r=0.999) for tannic acid concentrations up to 5.00 mu mol L-1. The detection limit and coefficient of variation were estimated as 10 nmol L-1 (99.7% confidence level) and 1% (1.78 mu mol L-1 tannic acid, n=10), respectively. The sampling rate was 50 determinations per hour. The proposed procedure is more sensitive and selective than the official Folin-Denis method, also minimizing drastically waste generation. Recoveries within 91.8 and 115% were estimated for total tannin determination in tea and wine samples. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
