The hydrolytic property and thermal stability of LiAlO2 (LAO), important factors for its application, were examined by AFM and X-ray rocking curve. We found that H2O may be deleterious for LAO surface polishing when the root mean square (RMS) value is less than 1 nm. However, when the RMS value is more than 1 nm it may be useful for LAO polishing. (100)-plane LAO substrates are annealed in the range of 850-900 degrees C in flux N-2, Slick AlN layer probably is produced on the substrate surface. M-plane GaN layer has grown on the substrate by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method. Theses results show that LiAlO2 crystal is a promising substrate of fabricating high-efficiency LEDs by MOCVD. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Laser conditioning effects of the HfO2/SiO2 antireflective (AR) coatings at 1064 nm and the accumulation effects of multishot laser radiation were investigated. The HfO2/SiO2 AR coatings were prepared by E-beam evaporation (EBE). The singleshot and multi-shot laser induced damage threshold was detected following ISO standard 11254-1.2, and the laser conditioning was conducted by three-step raster scanning method. It was found that the single-shot LIDT and multi-shot LIDT was almost the same. The damage mostly > 80% occurred in the first shot under multi-shot laser radiation, and after that the damage occurring probability plummeted to < 5%. There was no obvious enhancement of the laser damage resistance for both the single-shot and multi-shot laser radiation of the AR coatings after laser conditioning. A Nomarski microscope was employed to map the damage morphology, and it found that the damage behavior is defect-initiated for both unconditioned and conditioned samples. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Procedures for sampling genomic DNA from live billfishes involve manual restraint and tissue excision that can be difficult to carry out and may produce stresses that affect fish survival. We examined the collection of surface mucous as a less invasive alternative method for sourcing genomic DNA by comparing it to autologous muscle tissue samples from Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus), sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus), and swordfish (Xiphias gladius). Purified DNA from mucous was comparable to muscle and was suitable for conventional polymerase chain reaction, random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis, and mitochondrial and nuclear locus sequencing. The nondestructive and less invasive characteristics of surface mucous collection may promote increased survival of released specimens and may be advantageous for other marine fish genetic studies, particularly those involving large live specimens destined for release.

[ES] La astrología grecorromana es un código lingüístico con signos (planetas, signos del Zodíaco), y con leyes de interconexión entre ellos (eclíptica, aspectos, casas, límites), y ha de ser valorada no sólo desde la perspectiva de su cientificidad, sino desde la de sus funciones para el individuo y la sociedad: es un conocimiento del futuro singular que afecta a la totalidad de lo implicado, y en la totalidad de sus dimensiones. Suple así el conocimiento de la ciencia antigua, que no fue capaz de incluir ni lo futuro ni lo singular. La astrología integra al individuo en la comunidad, integrándolo previamente en su universo semántico. Cosmos, mundo humano y mundo natural se armonizan totalmente.

This paper presents 649 length-weight relationships gathered from literature pertaining to 83 fish species, belonging to 34 families, throughout Greek marine waters. The value of the slope b ranged from 1.667 for Cepola macrophthalma to 3.707 for Mullus barbatus. The mean value of b was 2.989 (SD=0.339) and did not differ significantly from 3(t-test, p<0.05). The median value of b was 3.058 and 50% of the b values ranged between 2.900 and 3.186.

A dissertação procura estabelecer os fundamentos constitucionais e legais do princípio da cooperação no processo civil, descrevendo-o como um princípio constitucional implícito, decorrente do princípio da solidariedade (art. 3, I, CF/1988), da isonomia (art. 5., caput, CF/1988), do acesso à ordem jurídica justa (art. 5., XXXV, CF/1988), do devido processo legal (art. 5., LIV, CF/1988), do contraditório, da ampla defesa (art. 5., LV, CF/1988) e da duração razoável do processo (art. 5., LXXVIII, CF/1988). O trabalho procura demonstrar que o princípio da cooperação é a ideia base de vários dispositivos do Código de Processo Civil (CPC) de 1973 e do Projeto do Novo CPC, entre eles o art. 339 do CPC/1973 e aqueles que disciplinam a exibição de documento ou coisa. A dissertação procura estabelecer os limites do princípio da cooperação existentes no ordenamento jurídico brasileiro, em especial o direito à privacidade (art. 5., X, CF/1988) e o direito ao silêncio (art. 5., LXIII, CF/1988). Enfim, a dissertação procura estabelecer o conteúdo do princípio da cooperação e a forma como este opera no processo civil.

Fishery science pioneers often faced challenges in their field work that are mostly unknown to modern biologists. Some of the travails faced by ichthyologist and, later, fishery biologist Charles Henry Gilbert (1859-1928) during his service as Naturalist-in-Charge of the North Pacific cruise ofthe U.S. Bureau of Fisheries Steamer Albatross in 1906, are described here, as are accomplishments of the cruise. The vessel left San Francisco, Calif., on 3 May 1906, just after the great San Francisco earthquake, for scientific exploration of waters of the Aleutian islands, Bering Sea, Kamchatka, Sakhalin, and Japan, returning to San Francisco in December. Because the expedition occurred just after the war between Japan and Russia of 1904-05 floating derelict mines in Japanese waters were often a menace. Major storms caused havoc in the region, and the captain of the Albatross, Lieutenant Commander LeRoy Mason Garrett (1857-1906), U.S.N., was lost at sea, apparently thrown from the vessel during a sudden storm on the return leg of the cruise. Despite such obstacles, Gilbert and the Albatross successfully completed their assigned chores. They occupied 339 dredging and 48 hydrographic stations, and discovered over 180 new species of fishes and many new species of invertebrates. The expedition's extensive biological collections spawned over 30 descriptive publications, some of which remain today as standards of knowledge.
