A high-throughput screening was employed to identify new compounds in Cu(CH3COO)(2)center dot H2O-NIPA-heterocyclic ligand systems. Of the compounds identified, three compounds, Cu-3{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(3)(C3N6H6)] (1), Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN4H)]center dot-(H2O) (II), and Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2}-)(CN5H2)]center dot 2(H2O) (III), have been isolated as good quality single crystals by employing conventional hydrothermal methods. Three other compounds, Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}-(CN4H)(H2O) (IIa), Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN5H2) (IIIa), and Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}{(CN5H2)(2)}2H(2)O (IIIb), were identified by a combination of elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and IR spectroscopic studies, although their structures are yet to be determined. The single crystalline compounds were also characterized by elemental analysis, TGA, IR, UV vis, magnetic, and catalytic studies. The structures of the compounds have paddle wheel (I) and infinite Cu 0(H) Cu chains (II and HI) connected with NLPA and heterocyclic ligands forming two-(II) and three-dimensional (I and III) structures. The bound and lattice water molecules in 11 and 111 could be reversibly removed/inserted without affecting the structure. In the case of II, the removal of water gives rise to a structural transition, but the dehydrated phase reverts back to the original phase on prolonged exposure to atmospheric conditions. Magnetic studies indicate an overall antiferromagnetism in all of the compounds. Lewis acid catalytic studies indicate that compounds II and HI are active for cyanosilylation of imines.

The higher substrate and chiral auxiliary concentration is a pre-requisite to obtain efficient separation of H-1 NMR signals of enantiomers. The higher concentration of chiral lanthanide shift reagents provides broadened spectral lines resulting in a severe loss of resolution between the enantiomer resonances. In order to circumvent such difficulties, herein we present the application and the usefulness of a selective F-1 decoupled correlation (COSY) experiment which yields proton decoupled proton spectra in the indirect dimension. The potentiality of the experiment is demonstrated on several chiral compounds possessing different functional groups, employing either a lanthanide shift reagent or a solvating reagent as chiral auxiliaries. We report the C-HETSERF experiment for determination of long- and short-range homo- and heteronuclear scalar couplings ((n)J(HH) and (n)J(XH), n >= 1) of organic molecules with a low sensitivity dilute heteronucleus in natural abundance. The method finds significant advantage in measurement of relative signs of long-range heteronuclear total couplings in chiral organic liquid crystal. The advantage of the method is demonstrated for the measurement of residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) in enantiomers oriented in the chiral liquid crystal with a focus to unambiguously assign R/S designation in a 2D spectrum. The alignment tensor calculated from the experimental RDCs and with the computed structures of enantiomers obtained by DFT calculations provides the size of the back-calculated RDCs. Smaller root-mean-square deviations (rmsd) between experimental and calculated RDCs indicate better agreement with the input structure and its correct designation of the stereogenic center.

Fluorene and its derivatives are well-known organic semiconducting materials in the field of opto-electronic devices because of their charge transport properties. Three new organic semiconducting materials, namely, 2,2'-((9,9-butyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene))bisbenzod]thiazole, C4; 2,2'-((octyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene))bisbenzod]thiazole, C8; and 2,2'-((9,9-dodecayl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene))bisbenzod]thiazole, C12 with a benzothiazole-fluorene backbone, were synthesized and characterized for their photophysical properties. A phenomenon of concomitant polymorphism has been investigated in the first two derivatives (C4 and C8) and has been analyzed systematically in terms of the packing characteristics involving pi ... pi interactions. The conformational flexibility of the pi-conjugated 2,2'-(fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene)bisbenzod]thiazole backbone coupled with orientational freedom of the terminal alkyl chains were found to be the key factors responsible for these polymorphic modifications. Attempts to grow suitable crystals for single crystal X-ray diffraction of compound C12 were unsuccessful.

We demonstrate a technique for precisely measuring hyperfine intervals in alkali atoms. The atoms form a three-level system in the presence of a strong control laser and a weak probe laser. The dressed states created by the control laser show significant linewidth reduction. We have developed a technique for Doppler-free spectroscopy that enables the separation between the dressed states to be measured with high accuracy even in room temperature atoms. The states go through an avoided crossing as the detuning of the control laser is changed from positive to negative. By studying the separation as a function of detuning, the center of the level-crossing diagram is determined with high precision, which yields the hyperfine interval. Using room temperature Rb vapor, we obtain a precision of 44 kHz. This is a significant improvement over the current precision of similar to1 MHz.

A low power keeper circuit using the concept of rate sensing has been proposed. The proposed technique reduces the amount of short circuit power dissipation in the domino gate by 70% compared to the conventional keeper technique. Also the total power-delay product is 26% lower compared to the previously reported techniques. The process tracking capability of the design enables the domino gate to achieve uniform delay across different process corners. This reduces the amount of short circuit power dissipation that occurs in the cascaded domino gates by 90%. The use of the proposed technique in the read path of a register file reduces the energy requirement by 26% as compared to the other keeper techniques. The proposed technique has been prototyped in 130nm CMOS technology.

We propose and demonstrate a technique for electrical detection of polarized spins in semiconductors in zero applied magnetic fields. Spin polarization is generated by optical injection using circularly polarized light which is modulated rapidly using an electro-optic cell. The modulated spin polarization generates a weak time-varying magnetic field which is detected by a sensitive radio-frequency coil. Using a calibrated pickup coil and amplification electronics, clear signals were obtained for bulk GaAs and Ge samples from which an optical spin orientation efficiency of 4.8% could be determined for Ge at 1342 nm excitation wavelength. In the presence of a small external magnetic field, the signal decayed according to the Hanle effect, from which a spin lifetime of 4.6 +/- 1.0 ns for electrons in bulk Ge at 127 K was extracted.

An experimental setup has been realized to measure weak magnetic moments which can be modulated at radio frequencies (similar to 1-5 MHz). Using an optimized radio-frequency (RF) pickup coil and lock-in amplifier, an experimental sensitivity of 10(-15) Am(2) corresponding to 10(-18) emu has been demonstrated with a 1 s time constant. The detection limit at room temperature is 9.3 x 10(-16) Am(2)/root Hz limited by Johnson noise of the coil. The setup has been used to directly measure the magnetic moment due to a small number (similar to 7 x 10(8)) of spin polarized electrons generated by polarization modulated optical radiation in GaAs and Ge. The Gibbs' energy offormation of the intermetallic compound URh3has been measured in the temperature range 980 to 1320 K using an oxide solid state cell incorporating yttria-doped thoria as the solid electrolyte and a mixture of manganese and manganese oxide as the reference electrode. The cell can be represented as Pt, Mn + MnO I (Y203)Th02 I Rh + URh3 + U02 + x' Rh, Pt The reversible emf of the cell was a linear function of temperature E = 15.60 +0.0237 T (±0.8) mY. Using auxiliary thermodynamic data for MnO and U02+ x the Gibbs' energy of formation of URh3 from component metals has been computed. The results can be expressed by the equation L'.G?< URh3 > = -316240 + 13.22 T (± 3000) J mol-1. The "third-law" enthalpy of formation of URh3at 298 K is -293.2 (± 4) kJ mol-1, significantly more negative than the value of -181.5 kJ mol-1 calculated using Miedema's model.

The generalizations of the Onsager model for the radial boundary layer and the Carrier-Maslen model for the end-cap axial boundary layer in a high-speed rotating cylinder are formulated for studying the secondary gas flow due to wall heating and due to insertion of mass, momentum and energy into the cylinder. The generalizations have wider applicability than the original Onsager and Carrier-Maslen models, because they are not restricted to the limit A >> 1, though they are restricted to the limit R e >> 1 and a high-aspect-ratio cylinder whose length/diameter ratio is large. Here, the stratification parameter A = root m Omega(2)R(2)/2k(B)T). This parameter A is the ratio of the peripheral speed, Omega R, to the most probable molecular speed, root 2k(B)T/m, the Reynolds number Re = rho w Omega R(2)/mu, where m is the molecular mass, Omega and R are the rotational speed and radius of the cylinder, k(B) is the Boltzmann constant, T is the gas temperature, rho(w) is the gas density at wall, and mu is the gas viscosity. In the case of wall forcing, analytical solutions are obtained for the sixth-order generalized Onsager equations for the master potential, and for the fourth-order generalized Carrier-Maslen equation for the velocity potential. For the case of mass/momentum/energy insertion into the flow, the separation-of-variables procedure is used, and the appropriate homogeneous boundary conditions are specified so that the linear operators in the axial and radial directions are self-adjoint. The discrete eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear operators (sixth-order and second-order in the radial and axial directions for the Onsager equation, and fourth-order and second-order in the axial and radial directions for the Carrier-Maslen equation) are determined. These solutions are compared with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) simulations. The comparison reveals that the boundary conditions in the simulations and analysis have to be matched with care. The commonly used `diffuse reflection' boundary conditions at solid walls in DSMC simulations result in a non-zero slip velocity as well as a `temperature slip' (gas temperature at the wall is different from wall temperature). These have to be incorporated in the analysis in order to make quantitative predictions. In the case of mass/momentum/energy sources within the flow, it is necessary to ensure that the homogeneous boundary conditions are accurately satisfied in the simulations. When these precautions are taken, there is excellent agreement between analysis and simulations, to within 10 %, even when the stratification parameter is as low as 0.707, the Reynolds number is as low as 100 and the aspect ratio (length/diameter) of the cylinder is as low as 2, and the secondary flow velocity is as high as 0.2 times the maximum base flow velocity. The predictions of the generalized models are also significantly better than those of the original Onsager and Carrier-Maslen models, which are restricted to thin boundary layers in the limit of high stratification parameter.

The paper outlines a technique for sensitive measurement of conduction phenomena in liquid dielectrics. The special features of this technique are the simplicity of the electrical system, the inexpensive instrumentation and the high accuracy. Detection, separation and analysis of a random function of current that is superimposed on the prebreakdown direct current forms the basis of this investigation. In this case, prebreakdown direct current is the output data of a test cell with large electrodes immersed in a liquid medium subjected to high direct voltages. Measurement of the probability-distribution function of a random fluctuating component of current provides a method that gives insight into the mechanism of conduction in a liquid medium subjected to high voltages and the processes that are responsible for the existence of the fluctuating component of the current.

In the determination of the response time of u.h.v. damped capacitive impulse voltage dividers using the CIGRE IMR-1MS group (1) method and the arrangement suggested by the International Electrotechnical Commission (the I EC square loop),the surge impedance of the connecting lead has been found to influence the accuracy of determination. To avoid this difficulty,a new graphical procedure is proposed. As this method uses only those data points which can be determined with good accuracy, errors in response-time area evaluation do not influence the result.
