Feeding activity, selective grazing and the potential grazing impact of two dominant grazers of the Polar Frontal Zone, Calanus simillimus and Rhincalanus gigas, and of copepods < 2 mm were investigated with incubation experiments in the course of an iron fertilized diatom bloom in November 2000. All grazers were already actively feeding in the low chlorophyll waters prior to the onset of the bloom. C. simillimus maintained constant clearance rates and fed predominantly on diatoms. R. gigas and the small copepods strongly increased clearance and ingestion of diatoms in response to their enhanced availability. All grazers preyed on microzooplankton, most steadily on ciliates, confirming the view that pure herbivory appears to be the exception rather than the rule in copepod feeding. The grazers exhibited differences in feeding behavior based on selectivity indices. C. simillimus and R. gigas showed prey switching from dinoflagellates to diatoms in response to the phytoplankton bloom. All grazers most efficiently grazed on large diatoms leading to differences in daily losses for large and small species, e.g. Corethron sp. or Thalassionema nitzschioides. Species-specific diatom mortality rates due to grazing suggest that the high feeding activity of C. simillimus prior to and during the bloom played a role in shaping diatom population dynamics

The diatom flora of three lakes in the ice-free Amery Oasis, East Antarctica, was studied. Two of the lakes are meltwater reservoirs, Terrasovoje Lake (31 m depth) and Radok Lake (362 m depth), while Beaver Lake (>435 m depth) is an epishelf lake. The lakes can be characterized as cold, ultra-oligotrophic and alkaline, displaying moderate (Radok and Terrasovoje lakes) to high (Beaver Lake) conductivities. There was no diatom phytoplankton present in any of the three lakes. While 34 benthic diatom taxa were identified from modern and Holocene sediments of Terrasovoje and Radok lakes, a 30-cm long sediment core recovered in Beaver Lake was barren. Five species (Luticola muticopsis, Muelleria peraustralis, Pinnularia cymatopleura, Psammothidium metakryophilum, P. stauroneioides) are endemic to the Antarctic region. All identified taxa are photographically documented and brief notes on their taxonomy, biogeography and ecology are provided. The most abundant diatom taxa are Amphora veneta, Craticula cf. molesta, Diadesmis spp, M. peraustralis and Stauroneis anceps. This is the first report on the diatom flora in lakes of the Amery Oasis.

Concentration of dissolved and suspended organic carbon in the Barents Sea decreases with increasing depth and in meridional direction from south to north. This fact is attributed to uneven supply of organic matter (OM) from different sources. Large amounts of OM are present in the water column of the Barents Sea, which is a result of high productivity of this water mass and slow decomposition of OM at low temperatures and lowered activity of microflora. Larger amount of OM reaches bottom sediments of the Barents Sea more than in seas, which have similar depth and productivity, but are located at low latitudes. Characteristic features of distribution of lipids and suspended matter in sea water are examined.

Concentrations of dissolved Ca2+, Sr2+, Mg2+, SO4[2-], and alkalinity were measured in pore waters squeezed from sediments taken from ODP Holes 626C and 626D in the Florida Straits; Holes 627A and 627B, 628A, and 630A and 630C north of Little Bahama Bank; Holes 631 A, 632A and 632B, and 633A in Exuma Sound; and Holes 634A and 635A and 635B in Northeast Providence Channel. These data are compared with the mineralogy and strontium content of the sediments from which the waters were squeezed. Contrasts in the geochemical profiles suggest that significantly different processes govern pore-water signatures at each group of sites. In Little Bahama Bank, strong positive Ca2+ gradients are correlated with weak negative Mg2+ profiles. These trends are analogous to those seen at DSDP sites where carbonate deposits immediately overlie mafic basement, but as the depth to basement may be in excess of 5000 m, we suggest that diffusion gradients are initiated by an underlying sedimentary unit. In contrast, Ca2+ and Mg2+ gradients in Exuma Sound are not developed to any appreciable extent over similar thicknesses of sediment. We suggest that the pore-water chemistry in these deposits is principally controlled by diagenetic reactions occurring within each sequence. The location and extent of carbonate diagenesis can be estimated from dissolved Sr2+ profiles. In Little Bahama Bank and Exuma Sound, Sr2+ concentrations reach a maximum value of between 700 and 1000 µmol/L. Although the depths at which these concentrations are achieved are different for the two areas, the corresponding age of the sediment at the dissolved Sr2+ maximum is similar. Consequently, the diffusive flux of Sr2+ and the calculated rates of recrystallization in the two areas are likewise of a similar magnitude. The rates of recrystallization we calculate are lower than those found in some DSDP pelagic sites. As the waters throughout most of the holes are saturated with respect to SrSO4, celestite precipitation may cause erroneously low Sr2+ production rates and, consequently, low calculated rates of recrystallization. We therefore encourage only the discriminate use of Sr2+ profiles in the quantification of diagenetic processes.

Results of studies in two biogeochemically active zones of the Atlantic Ocean (the Benguela upwelling waters and the region influenced by the Congo River run-off) are reported in the book. A multidisciplinary approach included studies of the major elements of the ocean ecosystem: sea water, plankton, suspended matter, bottom sediments, interstitial waters, aerosols, as well as a wide complex of oceanographic studies carried out under a common program. Such an approach, as well as a use of new methodical solutions led to obtaining principally new information on different aspects of oceanology.

Thermokarst lakes are typical features of the northern permafrost ecosystems, and play an important role in the thermal exchange between atmosphere and subsurface. The objective of this study is to describe the main thermal processes of the lakes and to quantify the heat exchange with the underlying sediments. The thermal regimes of five lakes located within the continuous permafrost zone of northern Siberia (Lena River Delta) were investigated using hourly water temperature and water level records covering a 3-year period (2009-2012), together with bathymetric survey data. The lakes included thermokarst lakes located on Holocene river terraces that may be connected to Lena River water during spring flooding, and a thermokarst lake located on deposits of the Pleistocene Ice Complex. Lakes were covered by ice up to 2 m thick that persisted for more than 7 months of the year, from October until about mid-June. Lake-bottom temperatures increased at the start of the ice-covered period due to upward-directed heat flux from the underlying thawed sediment. Prior to ice break-up, solar radiation effectively warmed the water beneath the ice cover and induced convective mixing. Ice break-up started at the beginning of June and lasted until the middle or end of June. Mixing occurred within the entire water column from the start of ice break-up and continued during the ice-free periods, as confirmed by the Wedderburn numbers, a quantitative measure of the balance between wind mixing and stratification that is important for describing the biogeochemical cycles of lakes. The lake thermal regime was modeled numerically using the FLake model. The model demonstrated good agreement with observations with regard to the mean lake temperature, with a good reproduction of the summer stratification during the ice-free period, but poor agreement during the ice-covered period. Modeled sensitivity to lake depth demonstrated that lakes in this climatic zone with mean depths > 5 m develop continuous stratification in summer for at least 1 month. The modeled vertical heat flux across the bottom sediment tends towards an annual mean of zero, with maximum downward fluxes of about 5 W/m**2 in summer and with heat released back into the water column at a rate of less than 1 W/m**2 during the ice-covered period. The lakes are shown to be efficient heat absorbers and effectively distribute the heat through mixing. Monthly bottom water temperatures during the ice-free period range up to 15 °C and are therefore higher than the associated monthly air or ground temperatures in the surrounding frozen permafrost landscape. The investigated lakes remain unfrozen at depth, with mean annual lake-bottom temperatures of between 2.7 and 4 °C.

Total dissolvable iron (TDFe), particulate iron (PFe) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 measurements were performed along a N-S transect in the upper 250 m in the Southern Ocean (62°00E/66°42S - 49°00S, ANTARES II cruise, February 1994). TDFe was organically extracted (APDC/DDDC-chloroform) and analysed by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS), PFe was analysed by GFAAS following a strong mixed-acid leach, and H2O2 was analysed on board by fluorometry. The respective detection limits are equal to 0.13 nmol/kg, 0.02 nmol/kg, and 3.0 nmol/kg. TDFe concentrations vary from 0.4 to 6.2 nmol/kg and profiles are not completely depleted in the surface. PFe concentrations vary from 0.02 to 0.2 nmol/kg. Iron/carbon (Fe/C) uptake ratios for phytoplankton were calculated either from seawater or particle measurements. They are variable along the transect but are consistent when they could be compared. All the observed ratios are within the range of values proposed for the Fe/C uptake ratios by phytoplankton. Using our uptake ratio calculated in the Permanent Open Ocean Zone (4 x 10**?6 mol/mol), we estimate that the primary production which can be supported by the iron input flux into the surface waters is two times higher than the measured primary production in the same area. In the surface waters, H2O2 concentrations vary from 5.0 to 19.7 nmol/kg. Such low concentrations are due to strong vertical mixing, low dissolved organic matter concentrations and the latitude of the site.

Although ponds make up roughly half of the total area of surface water in permafrost landscapes, their relevance to carbon dioxide emissions on a landscape scale has, to date, remained largely unknown. We have therefore investigated the inflows and outflows of dissolved organic and inorganic carbon from lakes, ponds, and outlets on Samoylov Island, in the Lena Delta of northeastern Siberia in September 2008, together with their carbon dioxide emissions. Outgassing of carbon dioxide (CO2) from these ponds and lakes, which cover 25% of Samoylov Island, was found to account for between 74 and 81% of the calculated net landscape-scale CO2 emissions of 0.2-1.1 g C/m**2/d during September 2008, of which 28-43% was from ponds and 27-46% from lakes. The lateral export of dissolved carbon was negligible compared to the gaseous emissions due to the small volumes of runoff. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon in the ponds were found to triple during freezeback, highlighting their importance for temporary carbon storage between the time of carbon production and its emission as CO2. If ponds are ignored the total summer emissions of CO2-C from water bodies of the islands within the entire Lena Delta (0.7-1.3 Tg) are underestimated by between 35 and 62%.

Sampling was conducted during RV Meteor cruise M93 in austral summer 2013 in an area from 11ºS to 14ºS and approximately 120 km offshore to within 10 km of the Peruvian coast. Specimens were collected using a Hydrobios Multinet Maxi (0.5 m2 mouth opening, 330 µm mesh size, 9 nets) and a WP-2 net (Hydrobios, 0.26 m2 mouth opening, 200 µm mesh size). P. monodon were identified according to http://researchdata.museum.vic.gov.au/squatlobster/delta/deltakey.html. Specimens were transferred into filtered, well-oxygenated seawater immediately after the catch and maintained for 4 to 16 hours prior to physiological experiments. Maintenance and physiological experiments were conducted at 13°C as the temperature observed at 100 to 200 m depth in the OMZ ranged from 13.7 to 12.7°C.

Parameters in the photosynthesis-irradiance (P-E) relationship of phytoplankton were used to calculate daily production at weekly to bi-weekly intervals for 20 years at 6 stations on the Rhode River, Maryland (USA). The objectives of this work were to determine the patterns and controls on the P-E parameters and primary production of phytoplankton in a shallow eutrophic estuary. Additional measurements that are components of calculated daily rates of primary productivity are given: the light-saturation irradiance, photoperiod, maximal noon incident irradiance, optical depth, dimensionless depth integrals, and a correction for spectral selectivity of light absorption. P-E parameters and chlorophyll a concentrations were given in a related dataset, Gallegos (2012, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.816494).

The biogeochemistry of iodine in the waters of the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean was investigated during the Polarstern cruise ANTXXIV-3 ZERO&DRAKE. The speciation and distribution of iodine (iodate and iodide) in seawater was examined across gradients of iron concentrations and phytoplankton abundance, ranging from an open ocean region along the Zero Meridian to the Weddell Sea and Drake Passage. Iodine cycling in high latitudes differs from that in low latitudes due to differences in the plankton community composition and the physicochemical characteristics. Iodate concentrations ranged between 400 and 450 nmol/L from the surface to the bottom. Surface concentrations of iodide (17 to over 60 nmol/L) were about an order of magnitude higher than below the pycnocline. The peak values of iodide lay nearly always within the euphotic zone and showed a weak, positive correlation with nitrite concentrations in the upper 200 m. In all vertical profiles a pronounced sub-surface maximum in iodide appears between 50 and 200 m depth indicating an iodide drawdown at the near surface. Iodide distribution in the Weddell Sea showed elevated levels in Weddell Sea Bottom Water (WSBW) indicating slow oxidation kinetics and the potential for iodide as a tracer of WSBW formation.

Parameters in the photosynthesis-irradiance (P-E) relationship of phytoplankton were measured at weekly to bi-weekly intervals for 20 yr at 6 stations on the Rhode River, Maryland (USA). Variability in the light-saturated photosynthetic rate, PBmax, was partitioned into interannual, seasonal, and spatial components. The seasonal component of the variance was greatest, followed by interannual and then spatial. Physiological models of PBmax based on balanced growth or photoacclimation predicted the overall mean and most of the range, but not individual observations, and failed to capture important features of the seasonal and interannual variability. PBmax correlated most strongly with temperature and the concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (IC), with lesser correlations with chlorophyll a, diffuse attenuation coefficient, and a principal component of the species composition. In statistical models, temperature and IC correlated best with the seasonal pattern, but temperature peaked in late July, out of phase with PBmax, which peaked in September, coincident with the maximum in monthly averaged IC concentration. In contrast with the seasonal pattern, temperature did not contribute to interannual variation, which instead was governed by IC and the additional lesser correlates. Spatial variation was relatively weak and uncorrelated with ancillary measurements. The results demonstrate that both the overall distribution of PBmax and its relationship with environmental correlates may vary from year to year. Coefficients in empirical statistical models became stable after including 7 to 10 yr of data. The main correlates of PBmax are amenable to automated monitoring, so that future estimates of primary production might be made without labor-intensive incubations.
