Practical sessions are the backbone of qualification in engineering education. It leads to a better understanding and allows mastering scientific concepts and theories. The lack of the availability of practical sessions at many universities and institutions owing to the cost and the unavailability of instructors the most of the time caused a significant decline in experimentation in engineering education over the last decades. Recently, with the progress of computer-based learning, remote laboratories have been proven to be the best alternative to the traditional ones, regarding to its low cost and ubiquity. Some universities have already started to deploy remote labs in their practical sessions. This contribution compiles diverse experiences based on the deployment of the remote laboratory, Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR), on the practices of undergraduate engineering grades at various universities within the VISIR community. It aims to show the impact of its usage on engineering education concerning the assessments of students and teachers as well.

Current engineering education challenges require approaches that promote scientific, technical, design and complementary skills while fostering autonomy, innovation and responsibility. The European Project Semester (EPS) at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) (EPS@ISEP) is a one semester project-based learning programme (30 European Credit Transfer Units (ECTU)) for engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities that intends to address these goals. The students, organised in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real multidisciplinary problems during one semester. The EPS package, although on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). Hence, the students enrolled in this programme improve their transversal skills and learn, together and with the team of supervisors, subjects distinct from their core training. This paper presents the structure, implementation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering practices and promote internationalisation and engineering education innovation at ISEP.

This paper extents the by now classic sensor fusion complementary filter (CF) design, involving two sensors, to the case where three sensors that provide measurements in different bands are available. This paper shows that the use of classical CF techniques to tackle a generic three sensors fusion problem, based solely on their frequency domain characteristics, leads to a minimal realization, stable, sub-optimal solution, denoted as Complementary Filters3 (CF3). Then, a new approach for the estimation problem at hand is used, based on optimal linear Kalman filtering techniques. Moreover, the solution is shown to preserve the complementary property, i.e. the sum of the three transfer functions of the respective sensors add up to one, both in continuous and discrete time domains. This new class of filters are denoted as Complementary Kalman Filters3 (CKF3). The attitude estimation of a mobile robot is addressed, based on data from a rate gyroscope, a digital compass, and odometry. The experimental results obtained are reported.

This paper presents the development of a fish-like robot called Bro-Fish. Bro-Fish aims to be an educational toy dedicated to teaching mechanics, programming and the physics of floating objects to youngsters. The underlying intention is to awaken the interest of children for technology, especially biomimetic (biologically inspired) approaches, in order to promote sustainability and raise the level of ecological awareness. The main focus of this project was to create a robot with carangiform locomotion and controllable swimming, providing the opportunity to customize parts and experiment with the physics of floating objects. Therefore, the locomotion principles of fishes and mechanisms developed in related projects were analysed. Inspired by this background knowledge, a prototype was designed and implemented. The main achievement is the new tail mechanism that propels the robot. The tail resembles the undulation motion of fish bodies and is actuated in an innovative way, triggered by an elegant movement of a rotating helicoidal. First experimental tests revealed the potential of the proposed methodology to effectively generate forward propulsion.

Currently, the teaching-learning process in domains, such as computer programming, is characterized by an extensive curricula and a high enrolment of students. This poses a great workload for faculty and teaching assistants responsible for the creation, delivery, and assessment of student exercises. The main goal of this chapter is to foster practice-based learning in complex domains. This objective is attained with an e-learning framework—called Ensemble—as a conceptual tool to organize and facilitate technical interoperability among services. The Ensemble framework is used on a specific domain: computer programming. Content issues are tacked with a standard format to describe programming exercises as learning objects. Communication is achieved with the extension of existing specifications for the interoperation with several systems typically found in an e-learning environment. In order to evaluate the acceptability of the proposed solution, an Ensemble instance was validated on a classroom experiment with encouraging results.

O presente Relatório Final de Estágio concretiza-se num trabalho de reflexão crítica sobre as práticas realizadas como professora estagiária de Inglês e de Espanhol no âmbito das Unidades Curriculares de Prática Educativa I, II e III, do Curso de Mestrado em Ensino de Inglês e Francês ou Espanhol, da Escola Superior de Educação, do Instituto Politécnico do Porto. A problemática que se apresenta decorre da perspetiva de que o ensino e aprendizagem de uma língua estrangeira baseados na articulação entre disciplinas do currículo contribui para uma aprendizagem holística, desenvolvendo competências que permitem um entendimento geral e global dos fenómenos humanos proporcionando aos alunos a compreensão do saber escolar como um todo articulável, contribuindo para uma leitura lógica e completa da realidade. A sua concretização na sala de aula impõe que o professor planifique atividades e opte por estratégias de ensino e de aprendizagem diversificadas, onde convergem finalidades, conceitos e metodologias de diversas disciplinas do currículo. Assim, este trabalho descreve a planificação de práticas de ensino e aprendizagem de Inglês e Espanhol em articulação com os conteúdos e os objetivos da disciplina de Estudo do Meio no Primeiro Ciclo. A planificação de práticas de Inglês no Segundo Ciclo foi realizada em articulação com a disciplina de História e Geografia de Portugal, com base na metodologia de projeto. As opções adotadas na planificação didática são consideradas estratégicas para uma aprendizagem significativa. This paper presents a framework of competences developed for Industrial Engineering and Management that can be used as a tool for curriculum analysis and design, including the teaching and learning processes as well as the alignment of the curriculum with the professional profile. The framework was applied to the Industrial Engineering and Management program at University of Minho (UMinho), Portugal, and it provides an overview of the connection between IEM knowledge areas and the competences defined in its curriculum. The framework of competences was developed through a process of analysis using a combination of methods and sources for data collection. The framework was developed according to four main steps: 1) characterization of IEM knowledge areas; 2) definition of IEM competences; 3) survey; 4) application of the framework at the IEM curriculum. The findings showed that the framework is useful to build an integrated vision of the curriculum. The most visible aspect in the learning outcomes of IEM program is the lack of balance between technical and transversal competences. There was not almost any reference to the transversal competences and it is fundamentally concentrated on Project-Based Learning courses. The framework presented in this paper provides a contribution to the definition of IEM professional profile through a set of competences which need to be explored further. In addition, it may be a relevant tool for IEM curriculum analysis and a contribution for bridging the gap between universities and companies.

O presente artigo traz uma avaliação sobre um processo de implementação do PBL que ocorreu no curso de Engenharia Informática na Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade Eduardo Mondlane em Moçambique. Por este processo ser novo no contexto de ensino de Engenharia em Moçambique foram os desafios encontrados por parte dos docentes e estudantes relativos a implementação, coordenação e adequação do currículo a metodologia do PBL, fazendo com que o processo de implementação fosse gradual. Assim no primeiro semestre de 2014 foi implementado um processo PBL piloto envolvendo as disciplinas de Programação Orientada à Objetos 1 e Base de Dados 1, que foram disciplinas escolhidas pelo facto de seus currículos terem matérias comuns, todos desafios e comentários dados pelos estudantes foram levados em conta no desenho do segundo processo PBL para o segundo semestre de 2014 que envolveu as disciplinas de Programação Orientada à Objetos 2, Base de Dados 2 e Sistemas de Multimídia fazendo com que houvesse mais informação para o terceiro processo envolvendo as disciplinas de Engenharia de Software 1 e Programação em Web. A avaliação do processo por parte dos estudantes, veio através de inquiridos onde os estudantes fizeram chegar as suas preocupações e ideias a respeito do PBL e dos moldes em que este estava a ser implementado no currículo. O processo de implementação do PBL pode ser considerado uma experiência bem sucedida e com futuro promissor e que de certeza vai ajudar a inovar os processos de ensino de engenharia em Moçambique.

This paper reports on the experience of the implementation of a new mechanism to assess individual student contribution within project work, where students work in teams to solve a large-scale open-ended interdisciplinary project. The study takes place at the University of Minho, with first year engineering students, enrolled in the Industrial Management and Engineering (Integrated Masters) degree. The aim of this paper is to describe the main principles and procedures underlying the assessment mechanism created and also provide some feedback from its first implementation, based on the students, lecturers and tutors perceptions. For data collection, a survey was sent to all course lecturers and tutors involved in the assessment process. Students also contributed with suggestions, both on a workshop held at the end of the project and also by answering a survey on the overall satisfaction with PBL experience. Findings show a positive level of acceptance of the new mechanism by the students and also by the lecturers and tutors. The study identified the need to clarify the criteria used by the lecturers and the exact role of the tutor, as well as the need for further improvement of its features and procedures. Some recommendations are also issued regarding technical aspects related to some of the steps of the procedures, as well as the need for greater support on the adjustment and final setting of the individual grades.

Sustainability-related skills are becoming more and more relevant for a proficient and professional engineering practice. Industrial engineers in particular, given their broad field of intervention and being at the heart of industrial activity, hold a great deal of potential and responsibility in providing and delivering best industrial practices, that support enhanced industrial systems and products. Therefore making a real contribution in generating wealth and income for all the companies’ stakeholders, including local communities, as well as adding up to more sustainable ecosystems. Previous work by the authors focused on studying the inclusion of this subject on the education of industrial engineers, especially through active-learning methodologies, as well as presenting results on the use of one such approach. The study conducted tried to identify the impacts on sustainability learning using a given specific activity, i.e. a workshop on industrial ecology, held in the 2014/2015 academic year on the Integrated MSc degree on Industrial Engineering and Management at the University of Minho, Portugal. The study uses content analysis of student teams’ reports for two consecutive academic years. The former did not include one such workshop, while the latter did. The Fink taxonomy was used in the discussion of results and reflection. The study outcomes aimed at supporting decision making on worthiness of investment on similar education instruments for sustainability competency development. Some results of the study highlight that: (1) the workshop seem to globally have a positive contribution on the sustainability learning; (2) a number of dimensions of the Life cycle design strategy wheel was developed, but the approach was not broadly used, (3) There was a mismatch on the workshop schedule; (4) students enjoy the workshop; (5) a clearer endorsement on relevance of this aspect is required. Suggestions for future work are also issued.

O desenvolvimento profissional dos professores de matemática, por meio de progra¬mas nacionais e formações contínuas, deve proporcionar experiências que envolvam investigação, pensamento, planeamento, prática e reflexão. No caso da tecnologia, não nos devemos focar nas ferramentas em si, mas no modo como são usadas pelos docentes em contexto de sala de aula. Existem taxonomias de atividades de apren¬dizagem baseadas no conteúdo assentes na ideia do professor como construtor do currículo, que, para integrar com sucesso a tecnologia educativa nas aulas, desenvolve o conhecimento pedagógico e tecnológico do conteúdo (TPACK), e apresenta-se a de matemática. Desse modo, reflete-se, por meio de vários estudos nacionais e internacionais, que as tecnologias deverão ser usadas pelos professores de acordo com objetivos, conteúdos e pedagogias específicas para terem um efeito positivo na aprendizagem dos alunos sobre as atividades baseadas no conteúdo que melhor se enquadram com essas tecnologias.
