This is a part of a collection of materials developed by the HEAcademy Subject Centre for Languages, linguistics and area studies. The materials provide reflective activities designed to engage teachers with some of the key issues in working with international students and practical ideas for ways in which these can be addressed. Las relaciones internacionales, entendidas como una disciplina altamente interdisciplinaria, que estudia la relación y el comportamiento de los Estados y los diferentes actores internacionales, organizaciones internacionales y organizaciones no gubernamentales, reconoce la importancia de la existencia de una cooperación internacional para la integración y conocimiento de dichos actores. La cooperación internacional puede verse como un elemento esencial, ya que permite a países, entidades públicas y privadas compartir sus experiencias, conocimientos y capacidades en espacios donde los desafíos, oportunidades y limitaciones son similares; en el caso Latino Americano, debido a su historia, pueden identificarse necesidades y objetivos comunes en los diferentes países. Durante la primera década del siglo XXI, América Latina, al igual que el resto del mundo, está pasando por momentos de acople con el nuevo milenio. El aumento del alfabetismo, los desarrollos tecnológicos, la erradicación de enfermedades, la expansión cultural, la reducción de las fronteras entre países, son algunas de los muchos fenómenos que vemos día a día. Sin embargo, no han dejado de existir los niveles altos de pobreza, la violencia, las diferencias sociales marcadas, la discriminación y altos índices de desempleo. Muchos teóricos han propuesto soluciones para enmendar los errores que se han cometido en el pasado para sanar a la sociedad y brindarle herramientas para dicho progreso. El PNUD (Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo) manifiesta que una de las herramientas más importantes para lograr resultados reales en relación al desarrollo social, es la educación.

El presente trabajo de investigación permitirá acercar al lector a un entendimiento más completo acerca de la oferta actual de programas MBA que existen en las principales universidades del mundo. Con un enfoque más segmentado y especializado en la Escuela de Administración de la Universidad del Rosario; se pretenderá analizar el impacto profesional que ejercen estos programas, los cuales han tomado una relevancia significante en el campo laboral de las empresas, tanto nacionales como internacionales.

The instrumentality of the portfolios in the teach-learning process: study with higher education Portuguese teachers

In a time when higher education come for deep changes and if intends an education more centered in the pupil, the teach-learning portfolios appears as a tool to use, because versatile and with innumerable potentialities. This article reveals the results gotten with higher education teachers, who we looked for to know if these appeal in use the teach-learning portfolios, in the curricular units that teach. We looked for, equally, to perceive of that forms these are used. This is an exploratory study, basically descriptive, that does not have pretensions to generalize for all the teaching population. We elaborated and we applied a questionnaire, with 290 teachers of higher education public, university and polytechnic. We verify that the percentage of the teachers that uses the portfolios in the teach- learning process is not very raised.

How can strategic philanthropy contribute to innovation for companies

This investigation proposes to explore the existing link between a strategic conception of philanthropy and innovation. Indeed, the nature of the research question relies on an unexplored field in the CSR and Innovation management academic literature. It starts with the interest to know which the benefits are for a firm encouraged to invest strategically in philanthropy. In this regard, the analysis contributes in fitting this gap by following different objectives in an exploratory perspective. Throughout the research it will be analyzed the concept and the current and past contributions on the different branches of innovation (product innovation, managerial innovation, technological innovation), to accentuate the relation between an accurate strategic approach to philanthropy and the impact on the organizational value. Indeed, analyzing philanthropic innovation may provide insights about business opportunities and notions related to social investments and profit. That aspect includes the link between those strategic decisions that a firm can use to maximize those investments as it was part of their core business. It also proves the existing link between CSR and innovation, and the possibilities that the enterprises have towards this subject.

Beyond the mincer equation: the internal rate of return to higher education in Colombia

In order to present an estimation of the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) to higher education in Colombia we take advantage of the methodological approach provided by Heckman, Lochner and Todd (2005). Trying to overcome the criticism that surrounds interpretations of the education coefficient of Mincer equations as being the rate of return to investments in education we develop a more structured approach of estimation, which controls for selection bias, includes more accurate measures of labor income and the role of education costs and income taxes. Our results implied a lower rate of return than the ones found in the Colombian literature and show that the Internal Rate of Return for higher education in Colombia lies somewhere between 0.074 and 0.128. The results vary according to the year analyzed and individual’s gender. This last result reinforces considerations regarding gender discrimination in the Colombian labor market.

Do Colombian students underestimate higher education returns?

We analyze the determinants of subjective returns of higher education in Colombia. The information on expectations has been collected in categories, motivating the use of interval regression and an ordered probit approaches for modeling the relationship between beliefs and measures of ability, conditioning on individual, school and regional covariates. The results suggest that there are considerable differences in the size of the expected returns according to some population groups and a strong dominance of college against technical education. Gender gaps disappear in college education but it is found that girls tend to believe that professional wages are more concentrated into higher income categories than boys. Finally, it seems that Colombian students overestimate the pecuniary returns to education.

Evaluating An Alternative To Finance Higher Education: Human Capital Contracts In Colombia.

Se presenta un ejercicio para la valuación de Contratos de Capital Humano (CCH), siguiendo a Palacios (2004), en el cual se utilizan datos del Observatorio Laboral para la Educación y su Encuesta de Seguimiento a Graduados–2007. El análisis se hace a través de un modelo Monteriano y uno de Splines para encontrar los pronósticos determinísticos del ingreso. Se encuentra que los retornos a la educación superior proveen un incentivo para la implementación de CCHs para financiar completamente los programas de las universidades públicas y parcialmente en las universidades privadas. Financiar los programas de las universidades privadas requiere más ayudas para hacer los contratos rentables para los inversionistas y atractivos para los estudiantes.
