More than 65% (1040 species) of arthropod species alien to Europe are associated with human-made habitats, especially parks and gardens, human settlements and agricultural lands, whereas woodlands are yet colonized by less than 20% of the alien fauna, which still has a negligible representation in the other natural and semi-natural habitats. Large diff erences in habitat affi nity are observed between alien taxonomic groups. Phytophagous species are predominant among aliens, representing 47.2% of species alien to Europe.

Throughout the brain, patterns of activity in postsynaptic neurons influence the properties of synaptic inputs. Such feedback regulation is central to neural network stability that underlies proper information processing and feature representation in the central nervous system. At the cellular level, tight coupling of presynaptic and postsynaptic function is fundamental to neural computation and synaptic plasticity. The cohort of protein complexes at the pre and postsynaptic membrane allows for tight synapse-specific segregation and integration of diverse molecular and electrical signals.(...)

This study fits in the domain of in-service training of professional nurses. It was aimed to assess the impact of an educational intervention and the consequent improvement of the practice of inhalation therapy in a group of nurses from a medical service The study sample (convenience sample) was consituted by eight nurses from the medical service, Hospital Curry Cabral (aged 24-43 years) without previous special training in the field of inhalation therapy, but with prior experience with patients with respiratory diseases. The study ran in two moments of evaluation: evaluation 0 (before the educational intervention) and evaluation 1 (post-intervention). Between these two moments, a training program about therapeutic inhalation was administered to all nurses, with a double component of theory and practice. Before and after the educational intervention two evaluation tools were applied: for the assessment of theoretical knowledge, the nurses had to fill a self-assessment questionnaire and in order to evaluate their knowledge related to procedural skills as well as their performance, they were observed (and their behaviour recorded on a check-list) during a demonstration of three inhalation techniques with devices: metered dose inhaler, metered dose inhaler with a spacer device ACE® and device turbohaler® The study results showed that the group of nurses in our sample had already some knowledge of theoretical nature (general scope of the inhalation therapy) but little solid knowledge, particularly in regard to drugs used in inhalation. In fact, a relatively weaker knowledge was registerd in what concerns specific and practical knowledge about inhalation therapy, for example, the importance of certain procedures - shaking the inhaler, pause between each inhalation, maintenance care of spacer device, mouth cavity hygiene after inhalation of corticosteroids. As for the observation of the inhaler technique, it was found that the group of nurses had a poor inhalation technique, in what concerns inhalation technique with MDI or MDI with spacer device, with a performance with several incorrect steps, or even omission of steps by nurses before the educational intervention. Finally, as the observation technique of the dry powder device turbohaler ®, we were unable to analyze the observation concerning this device, since none of the nurses in our sample, wast able to handlle it correctly, before and after training. In general terms, we found that the training given on inhalation therapy had a positive impact either in the theorical or the pratical knowledge on inhalation therapy (higher number of correct answers after training). Similarly, after training, there was the considerable improvement of specific and practical skills, namely the importance of certain procedures in the practice of inhalation therapy - shaking the inhaler, pause time between each inhalation, maintenance care of spacer device, sanitizing the buccal cavity after inhalation of corticosteroids. In contrast, knowledge about drugs administered by inhalation, were slightly below expectations, showing a lower number of correct answers given by the nurses after training. The training seemed to be a factor of "confusion" for this group of nurses, whose prior knowledge in this domais was not probably very solid to begin with. After training, the group of nurses in the study improved the performance of inhalation technique with MDI and MDI with spacer device. They not only correcty performed the steps or itens for the assessment of inhalation technique, previously performed incorrectly, but also showed a better understanding of the steps or itens for assessing the inhalation technique, with fewer steps missing (after training). In contrast, training with regard to the device turbohaler ® dry powder, was also below expectations, given that none of the nurses in the sample was able to demonstrate inhaler technique with this device before and after training. This was probably due to the fact that, the nurses did not feel the need to acquire this knowledge and the related practice. In summary, we can say that, overall, the training (with updated information on the appropriate policies in this field) showed an improvement in knowledge and performance in the practice of inhalation therapy. It is however crucial to underline the importance of in-service adequate training programmes, perceived as useful by the nurses, developped in different phases, linked to the nurses’ practice and combining with professional practices. The nurses’ knowledge and skills should also be further monitorized and evaluated in order to detect deviations introduced by the rotinization of procedures and to identify new training needs.

Recently there has been a great deal of work on noncommutative algebraic cryptography. This involves the use of noncommutative algebraic objects as the platforms for encryption systems. Most of this work, such as the Anshel-Anshel-Goldfeld scheme, the Ko-Lee scheme and the Baumslag-Fine-Xu Modular group scheme use nonabelian groups as the basic algebraic object. Some of these encryption methods have been successful and some have been broken. It has been suggested that at this point further pure group theoretic research, with an eye towards cryptographic applications, is necessary. In the present study we attempt to extend the class of noncommutative algebraic objects to be used in cryptography. In particular we explore several different methods to use a formal power series ring R && x1; :::; xn && in noncommuting variables x1; :::; xn as a base to develop cryptosystems. Although R can be any ring we have in mind formal power series rings over the rationals Q. We use in particular a result of Magnus that a finitely generated free group F has a faithful representation in a quotient of the formal power series ring in noncommuting variables.

Abstract Right hemispheric stroke aphasia (RHSA) rarely occurs in right- or left-handed patients with their language representation in right hemisphere (RH). For right-handers, the term crossed aphasia is used. Single cases, multiple cases reports, and reviews suggest more variable anatomo-clinical correlations. We included retrospectively from our stroke data bank 16 patients (right- and left-handed, and ambidextrous) with aphasia after a single first-ever ischemic RH stroke. A control group was composed of 25 successive patients with left hemispheric stroke and aphasia (LHSA). For each patient, we analyzed four modalities of language (spontaneous fluency, naming, repetition, and comprehension) and recorded eventual impairment: (1) on admission (hyperacute) and (2) between day 3 and 14 (acute). Lesion volume and location as measured on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were transformed into Talairach stereotaxic space. Nonparametric statistics were used to compare impaired/nonimpaired patients. Comprehension and repetition were less frequently impaired after RHSA (respectively, 56% and 50%) than after LHSA (respectively, 84% and 80%, P = 0.05 and 0.04) only at hyperacute phase. Among RHSA, fewer left-handers/ambidextrous than right-handers had comprehension disorders at second evaluation (P = 0.013). Mean infarct size was similar in RHSA and LHSA with less posterior RHSA lesions (caudal to the posterior commissure). Comprehension and repetition impairments were more often associated with anterior lesions in RHSA (Fisher's exact test, P < 0.05). Despite the small size of the cohort, our findings suggest increased atypical anatomo-functional correlations of RH language representation, particularly in non-right-handed patients.

Inflammasomes are crucial actors of the innate immunity. They consist of cytoplasmic multiprotein complexes controlling the biological activities of the inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß and IL-18. Inflammasome assembly depends on protein domain interaction. In this chapter, we focus on the biochemical aspects characterizing the components of the inflammasomes and their assembly into a high moelcuar weight protelytic complex.

Polyphosphate (polyP) occurs ubiquitously in cells, but its functions are poorly understood and its synthesis has only been characterized in bacteria. Using x-ray crystallography, we identified a eukaryotic polyphosphate polymerase within the membrane-integral vacuolar transporter chaperone (VTC) complex. A 2.6 angstrom crystal structure of the catalytic domain grown in the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) reveals polyP winding through a tunnel-shaped pocket. Nucleotide- and phosphate-bound structures suggest that the enzyme functions by metal-assisted cleavage of the ATP gamma-phosphate, which is then in-line transferred to an acceptor phosphate to form polyP chains. Mutational analysis of the transmembrane domain indicates that VTC may integrate cytoplasmic polymer synthesis with polyP membrane translocation. Identification of the polyP-synthesizing enzyme opens the way to determine the functions of polyP in lower eukaryotes.

In the PhD thesis “Sound Texture Modeling” we deal with statistical modelling or textural sounds like water, wind, rain, etc. For synthesis and classification. Our initial model is based on a wavelet tree signal decomposition and the modeling of the resulting sequence by means of a parametric probabilistic model, that can be situated within the family of models trainable via expectation maximization (hidden Markov tree model ). Our model is able to capture key characteristics of the source textures (water, rain, fire, applause, crowd chatter ), and faithfully reproduces some of the sound classes. In terms of a more general taxonomy of natural events proposed by Graver, we worked on models for natural event classification and segmentation. While the event labels comprise physical interactions between materials that do not have textural propierties in their enterity, those segmentation models can help in identifying textural portions of an audio recording useful for analysis and resynthesis. Following our work on concatenative synthesis of musical instruments, we have developed a pattern-based synthesis system, that allows to sonically explore a database of units by means of their representation in a perceptual feature space. Concatenative syntyhesis with “molecules” built from sparse atomic representations also allows capture low-level correlations in perceptual audio features, while facilitating the manipulation of textural sounds based on their physical and perceptual properties. We have approached the problem of sound texture modelling for synthesis from different directions, namely a low-level signal-theoretic point of view through a wavelet transform, and a more high-level point of view driven by perceptual audio features in the concatenative synthesis setting. The developed framework provides unified approach to the high-quality resynthesis of natural texture sounds. Our research is embedded within the Metaverse 1 European project (2008-2011), where our models are contributting as low level building blocks within a semi-automated soundscape generation system.

The molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of gene expression by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) have been analyzed. We show that TGF-beta specifically induces the activity of the proline-rich trans-activation domain of CTF-1, a member of the CTF/NF-I family of transcription factors. A TGF-beta-responsive domain (TRD) in the proline-rich transcriptional activation sequence of CTF-1 was shown to mediate TGF-beta induction in NIH-3T3 cells. Mutagenesis studies indicated that this domain is not the primary target of regulatory phosphorylations, suggesting that the growth factor may regulate a CTF-1-interacting protein. A two-hybrid screening assay identified a nucleosome component, histone H3, as a specific CTF-1-interacting protein in yeast. Furthermore, the CTF-1 trans-activation domain was shown to interact with histone H3 in both transiently and stably transfected mammalian cells. This interaction requires the TRD, and it appears to be upregulated by TGF-beta in vivo. Moreover, point mutations in the TRD that inhibit TGF-beta induction also reduce interaction with histone H3. In vitro, the trans-activation domain of CTF-1 specifically contacts histone H3 and oligomers of histones H3 and H4, and full-length CTF-1 was shown to alter the interaction of reconstituted nucleosomal cores with DNA. Thus, the growth factor-regulated trans-activation domain of CTF-1 can interact with chromatin components through histone H3. These findings suggest that such interactions may regulate chromatin dynamics in response to growth factor signaling.
