The precise nature of hormones and growth factors directly responsible for cartilage maturation is still largely unclear. Since longitudinal bone growth occurs through endochondral bone formation, excess or deficiency of most hormones and growth factors strongly influences final adult height. The structure and composition of the cartilaginous extracellular matrix have a critical role in regulating the behavior of growth plate chondrocytes. Therefore, the maintenance of the three-dimensional cell-matrix interaction is necessary to study the influence of individual signaling molecules on chondrogenesis, cartilage maturation and calcification. To investigate the effects of insulin on both proliferation and induction of hypertrophy in chondrocytes in vitro we used high-density micromass cultures of chick embryonic limb mesenchymal cells. Culture medium was supplemented with 1% FCS + 60 ng/ml (0.01 µM) insulin and cultures were harvested at regular time points for later analysis. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunoreactivity was widely detected in insulin-treated cultures and persisted until day 21 and [³H]-thymidine uptake was highest on day 14. While apoptosis increased in control cultures as a function of culture time, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL)-labeled cells were markedly reduced in the presence of insulin. Type II collagen production, alkaline phosphatase activity and cell size were also lower in insulin-treated cultures. Our results indicate that under the influence of 60 ng/ml insulin, chick chondrocytes maintain their proliferative potential but do not become hypertrophic, suggesting that insulin can affect the regulation of chondrocyte maturation and hypertrophy, possibly through an antiapoptotic effect.

Este trabajo de investigación, busca ofrecer al sector panelero de Colombia nuevas estrategias eco-eficientes y amigables con el medio ambiente, en pro de fortalecer las buenas prácticas agrícolas, que contribuyan con la gestión óptima de los residuos que se crean alrededor de la cadena de producción de la panela. Teniendo en cuenta que la obtención de desechos tanto orgánicos como inorgánicos, genera un impacto medioambiental negativo, se pudo identificar una de estas fuentes de contaminación, a través de un proceso de observación. Ésta es conocida como la Cachaza, la cual se genera dentro de un procedimiento denominado Limpieza del Dulce de Caña. Inicialmente, la caña se muele a través de una trituradora que exprime dulce sin tratamiento, el cual pasa por un ducto hasta regarse sobre una primera paila, donde se le aplica balso. Por medio del calor que produce una hornilla sobre la que se coloca dicha paila, se realiza un proceso de separación, el residuo consolidado en una espuma espesa, comienza a flotar por encima del dulce, siendo extraída a medida que va saliendo y depositada en otros recipientes. Considerando constantes prácticas como el vertimiento de la Cachaza sobre algunas fuentes hídricas (ríos, lagunas, etc.) y cultivos de caña ya fermentados (que elaboran nutrientes negativos sobre los mismos); se profundizará sobre los diferentes impactos ambientales que se originan en éste proceso agroindustrial. El objetivo principal del presente trabajo de investigación, consiste en la implementación de un proyecto de logística inversa, formulando estrategias para el procesamiento de la Cachaza a implementar en un trapiche de la zona de Rio negro a fin de reutilizar este residuo generando subproductos que aporten a la mitigación del impacto ambiental, dando así un valor agregado a toda la cadena. Mediante un análisis costo beneficio se evaluará qué tan fácil o difícil resulta la implementación de dicho proyecto, el cual al incluir un proceso adicional a la cadena de producción de la panela generara un suplemento alimenticio para los equinos y aprovechara el 100% de sus residuos a muy bajo costo.

The northern region of the Indian subcontinent is a vast landscape interlaced by diverse ecologies, e.g. the Gangetic plain and the Himalayas. A great number of ethnic groups are found there, displayed as a multitude of languages and cultures. The Tharu represent one of the largest and linguistically most diversified such groups, scattered across the Tarai region of Nepal and bordering Indian states. Their origins are uncertain. Hypotheses have been advanced about an Austroasiatic affinity, Tibeto-Burman origins, as well as aboriginal roots in the Tarai. Several Tharu groups speak a variety of Indo-Aryan languages, but have traditionally been described by ethnographers as representing an East Asian phenotype. Their ancestry and intra-population diversity had previously been tested only for haploid (mtDNA and Y-chromosome) markers in a small portion of the population. This study presents the first systematic genetic survey of the Tharu from both Nepal and the Indian states of Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh, using genome-wide SNPs and haploid (mtDNA and Y-chromosome) markers. The results suggest that the 'ethnic' construct of Tharu is likely to have lain in the Tarai region, with a reconstructible radiation to Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh. Despite extensive admixture with other local communities, Tharu sub-populations preserve strong genetic signatures that indicate a common ancestry.

Approximately 18,400 km**2 of seagrass habitat has been mapped within the coastal waters (<15 m) of Queensland (Australia) between November 1984 and June 2010. The total seagrass meadow distribution was calculated by merging maps from 115 separate mapping surveys (varying locations and dates). Due to tropical seagrass dynamism, meadow distribution can change seasonally and between years, and as a consequence, the composite represents the maximum area of seabed where seagrass has been observed/recorded. Mapping survey methodologies followed standardised global seagrass research methods (McKenzie et al. 2001) where the presence of seagrass was determined from in situ visual assessment of the seabed by either divers or drop cameras at GPS marked positions. Seagrass meadow boundaries were determined based on the positions of survey sites and the presence of seagrass, coupled with depth contours and remote sensing (e.g. aerial photography) where available. The merged meadow boundary accuracy was dependent on the original survey maps and varied from 10-100 m. The resulting composite seagrass distribution was saved as an ArcMap polygon shapefile, and projected to Geocentric Datum of Australia GDA94.

Novel flavivirus isolates from mosquitoes collected in northern Australia were analysed by partial genomic sequencing, monoclonal antibody-binding assays and polyclonal cross-neutralization tests. Two isolates were found to be antigenically distinct from, but related to, viruses of the Kokobera virus complex, which currently contains Kokobera (KOKV) and Stratford (STRV) viruses. Nucleotide sequence comparison of two separate regions of the genome revealed that an isolate from Saibai Island in the Torres Strait in 2000 (TS5273) was related closely to KOKV and STRV, with 74-80 and 75-76% nucleotide similarity, respectively. This thesis examines the gaps between health care services aimed at Aboriginal queer individuals living in St. John’s, Newfoundland and their health care needs. I used a multi-methods research design that includes interviews and demographic surveys, unobtrusive observation and qualitative content analysis. I conducted semi-structured interviews with institutional representatives from selected health related organizations – Eastern Health, Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador, the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador, and St. John’s Native Friendship Center; as well as a transgender activist and three people who identify as Aboriginal and queer. I conducted observational research at two public seminars on Aboriginal people and health. Finally, I carried out qualitative content analysis of organizational reports and webpages of the selected community organizations. Using a postcolonial queer framework that analyzes how Newfoundland and Labrador’s colonial history is reflected in current health care realities I argue that the lack of appropriate services and culturally insensitive delivery of services reproduce the historical marginalization of an already vulnerable group.

The Gulf of Carpentaria is an epicontinental sea (maximum depth 70 m) between Australia and New Guinea, bordered to the east by Torres Strait (currently 12 m deep) and to the west by the Arafura Sill (53 m below present sea level). Throughout the Quaternary, during times of low sea-level, the Gulf was separated from the open waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, forming Lake Carpentaria, an isolation basin, perched above contemporaneous sea-level with outlet channels to the Arafura Sea. A preliminary interpretation is presented of the palaeoenvironments recorded in six sediment cores collected by the IMAGES program in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The longest core (approx. 15 m) spans the past 130 ka and includes a record of sea-level/lake-level changes, with particular complexity between 80 and 40 ka when sea-level repeatedly breached and withdrew from Gulf/Lake Carpentaria. Evidence from biotic remains (foraminifers, ostracods, pollen), sedimentology and geochemistry clearly identifies a final marine transgression at about 9.7 ka (radiocarbon years). Before this transgression, Lake Carpentaria was surrounded by grassland, was near full, and may have had a surface area approaching 600 km-300 km and a depth of about 15 m. The earlier rise in sea-level which accompanied the Marine Isotopic Stage 6/5 transgression at about 130 ka is constrained by sedimentological and biotic evidence and dated by optical- and thermoluminescence and amino acid racemisation methods.

Sur quoi fonder une éthique de responsabilité et quelle place accorder aux cultures et aux traditions dans un contexte nouveau caractérisé par la mondialisation? Pour répondre à cette question, posée à partir de l’Afrique, nous avons pris un long chemin de réflexion. À partir de l’évaluation faite par Fabien Eboussi de la crise multiforme actuelle qui frappe l’Afrique, où l’auteur cherche et désigne les coupables et les responsables que sont, selon lui, les cultures africaines, la colonisation européenne et le christianisme, nous nous sommes concentré sur le sujet humain comme tel. La responsabilité est d’abord, à nos yeux, une question de conscience morale. Les approches anthropologiques utilisées dans leurs théories éthiques par Xavier Thévenot, Paul Ricoeur et Emmanuel Levinas nous ont permis de bâtir une définition du sujet comme une « liberté précédée ». L’antécédence est à la fois un principe anthropologique et éthique dans la relation et dans l’existence. Nous avons appliqué ce principe de précédence à la notion africaine d’ancestralité conçue comme le temps éthique hiérarchisé et orienté. Pour échapper à l’étroitesse tribale ou ethnique dans laquelle se vit cette ancestralité africaine, nous l’avons étendue aux dimensions de l’humanité, comme le fondement d’une éthique de responsabilité universelle. On est ancêtre de l’humanité. Sous le néologisme d’ancestrogenèse, nous avons proposé une éthique fondée sur le recrutement de ces ancêtres ou bienfaiteurs de l’humanité. L’ancestrogenèse est donc la construction d’une communauté humaine où chaque membre soit responsable de ses actes devant sa communauté locale – naturelle ou historique – en lien avec toute la communauté humaine dont la facilité de la communication accélère la convergence. À la suite de Bénezet Bujo, et pour fonder cette communauté sur le roc et la faire survivre aux fluctuations de l’esprit humain, nous avons placé le Christ à la tête des ancêtres, comme proto-ancêtre. En lui, nous avons le Verbe créateur unique, le sauveur unique et le rassembleur unique de l’humanité de tous lieux et de tous temps. Voilà qui suscite une multitude de questions d’ordre pédagogique, biblique, christologique, ecclésiologique, éthique, anthropologique, politique et sociologique, questions relatives à la formation morale du sujet-ancêtre telle qu’ébauchée dans le cadre limité de cette recherche.

‘¡Porque ni putas, ni peluqueras, ni nada… somos ciudadanas!’. Se pregunta por cómo se puede entender la ciudadanía desde las acciones comunitarias que llevaron a cabo un grupo de mujeres trans en la ciudad de Bogotá . Según informes nacionales y a nivel Latinoamérica son las mujeres trans pertenecientes al sector LGBT las que dijeron sentir, en mayor número, vulnerados sus derechos entorno a trabajo, salud y educación en la capital del país en comparación a la población LGB. La causa de tal vulneración pareció coincidir con su identidad de género, por ejemplo, al no poder encontrar trabajo por las expresiones de género que utilizaban. Por ende era necesario abordar cómo se entiende la ciudadanía desde corporalidades que no han tenido un óptimo acceso a la ciudad teniendo como referencia sus experiencias personales. Siendo el tránsito un proceso que se hace a lo largo del tiempo.

This article aims at discussing the contributions of the Bakhtinian Circle theories to foreign language teaching and learning (HALL et al., 2005), as far as the first years of formal education in Brazil are concerned. Up to the present moment, foreign languages, including English, are not officially part of the National Curriculum of the first five schooling years. Due to the importance of English in a globalized world and despite all the controversial socio-educational impacts of such an influence, there has been an increase in the interest in this discipline at the beginning years of Brazilian public education (ROCHA, 2006), which has been happening at an irregular pace and without official parameters. Therefore, the relevance of this work lies on the possible guidelines it may offer to support a more effective, situated and meaningful teaching-learning process in that context. Standing for a pluralistic approach to language education, we take the bakhtinian speech genres as organizers of the educational process. We strongly believe that through a dialogic, pluralistic and trans/intercultural teaching (MAHER, 2007), whose main objective is the development of multi (COPE e KALANTZIS, 2000) and critical (COMBER, 2006) literacies, the hybridization of genres and cultures, as well as the creation of third spaces (KOSTOGRIZ, 2005; KUMARAVADIVELU, 2008) can happen. From this perspective, foreign language teaching and learning play a transformative role in society and English is seen as a boundary object (STAR e GRIESEMER, 1989), in and by which diversity, pluralism and polyphony can naturally find their way.
