Eight phenolic acids and two abscisic acid isomers in Australian honeys from five botanical species (Melaleuca, Guioa, Lophostemon, Banksia and Helianthus) have been analyzed in relation to their botanical origins. Total phenolic acids present in these honeys range from 2.13 mg/100 g sunflower (Helianthus annuus) honey to 12.11 mg/100 g tea tree (Melaleuca quinquenervia) honey, with amounts of individual acids being various. Tea tree honey shows a phenolic profile of gallic, ellagic, chlorogenic and coumaric acids, which is similar to the phenolic profile of an Australian Eucalyptus honey (bloodwood or Eucalyptus intermedia honey). The main difference between tea tree and bloodwood honeys is the contribution of chlorogenic acid to their total phenolic profiles. In Australian crow ash (Guioa semiglauca) honey, a characteristic phenolic profile mainly consisting of gallic acid and abscisic acid could be used as the floral marker. In brush box (Lophostemon conferta) honey, the phenolic profile, comprising mainly gallic acid and ellagic acid, could be used to differentiate this honey not only from the other Australian non-Eucalyptus honeys but also from a Eucalyptus honey (yellow box or Eucalyptus melliodora honey). However, this Eucalyptus honey could not be differentiated from brush box honey based only on their flavonoid profiles. Similarly, the phenolic profile of heath (Banksia ericifolia) honey, comprising mainly gallic acid, an unknown phenolic acid (Phl) and coumaric acid, could also be used to differentiate this honey from tea tree and bloodwood honeys, which have similar flavonoid profiles. Coumaric acid is a principal phenolic acid in Australian sunflower honey and it could thus be used together with gallic acid for the authentication. These results show that the HPLC analysis of phenolic acids and abscisic acids in Australian floral honeys Could assist the differentiation and authentication of the honeys. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. This study introduces the use of combined Na-23 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Na-23 NMR relaxometry for the study of meat curing. The diffusion of sodium ions into the meat was measured using Na-23 MRI on a 1 kg meat sample brined in 10% w/w NaCl for 3-100 h. Calculations revealed a diffusion coefficient of 1 x 10(-5) cm(2)/s after 3 h of curing and subsequently decreasing to 8 x 10(-6) cm(2)/s at longer curing times, suggesting that changes occur in the microscopic structure of the meat during curing. The microscopic mobility and distribution of sodium was measured using Na-23 relaxometry. Two sodium populations were observed, and with increasing length of curing time the relaxation times of these changed, reflecting a salt-induced swelling and increase in myofibrillar pore sizes. Accordingly, the present study demonstrated that pore size and thereby salt-induced swelling in meat can be assessed using Na-23 relaxometry.

Virus-like particles (VLPs) are of interest in vaccination, gene therapy and drug delivery, but their potential has yet to be fully realized. This is because existing laboratory processes, when scaled, do not easily give a compositionally and architecturally consistent product. Research suggests that new process routes might ultimately be based on chemical processing by self-assembly, involving the precision manufacture of precursor capsomeres followed by in vitro VLP self-assembly and scale-up to required levels. A synergistic interaction of biomolecular design and bioprocess engineering (i.e. biomolecular engineering) is required if these alternative process routes and, thus, the promise of new VLP products, are to be realized.

Pentameric capsomeres of human papillomavirus capsid protein L1 expressed in Escherichia coli self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) in vitro. A multifactorial experimental design was used to explore a wide range of solution conditions to optimize the assembly process. The degree of assembly was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and a high-throughput turbidity assay was developed to monitor competing aggregation. The presence of zinc ions in the assembly buffer greatly increased the incidence of aggregation and had to be excluded from the experiment for meaningful analysis. Assembly of VLPs was optimal at a pH of about 6.5, calcium and sodium ions had no measurable effect, and dithiothreitol and glutathione inhibited assembly. Tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrated that an increase in urea concentration reduced the rate of VLP formation but had no effect on the final concentration of assembled VLPs. This study demonstrates the use of the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion crystallization method to screen for conditions that promote aggregation and the use of tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy for real-time monitoring of the assembly process.
Challenges related to data collection and dynamic model validation of a fertilizer granulation plant

L'obiettivo principale della politica di sicurezza alimentare è quello di garantire la salute dei consumatori attraverso regole e protocolli di sicurezza specifici. Al fine di rispondere ai requisiti di sicurezza alimentare e standardizzazione della qualità, nel 2002 il Parlamento Europeo e il Consiglio dell'UE (Regolamento (CE) 178/2002 (CE, 2002)), hanno cercato di uniformare concetti, principi e procedure in modo da fornire una base comune in materia di disciplina degli alimenti e mangimi provenienti da Stati membri a livello comunitario. La formalizzazione di regole e protocolli di standardizzazione dovrebbe però passare attraverso una più dettagliata e accurata comprensione ed armonizzazione delle proprietà globali (macroscopiche), pseudo-locali (mesoscopiche), ed eventualmente, locali (microscopiche) dei prodotti alimentari. L'obiettivo principale di questa tesi di dottorato è di illustrare come le tecniche computazionali possano rappresentare un valido supporto per l'analisi e ciò tramite (i) l’applicazione di protocolli e (ii) miglioramento delle tecniche ampiamente applicate. Una dimostrazione diretta delle potenzialità già offerte dagli approcci computazionali viene offerta nel primo lavoro in cui un virtual screening basato su docking è stato applicato al fine di valutare la preliminare xeno-androgenicità di alcuni contaminanti alimentari. Il secondo e terzo lavoro riguardano lo sviluppo e la convalida di nuovi descrittori chimico-fisici in un contesto 3D-QSAR. Denominata HyPhar (Hydrophobic Pharmacophore), la nuova metodologia così messa a punto è stata usata per esplorare il tema della selettività tra bersagli molecolari strutturalmente correlati e ha così dimostrato di possedere i necessari requisiti di applicabilità e adattabilità in un contesto alimentare. Nel complesso, i risultati ci permettono di essere fiduciosi nel potenziale impatto che le tecniche in silico potranno avere nella identificazione e chiarificazione di eventi molecolari implicati negli aspetti tossicologici e nutrizionali degli alimenti.

Purpose - Studies the implementation of lean supply and partnership relationships in the UK food and farming industry to assess if these types of interventions are effective. Design/methodology/approach - Reviews the challenges affecting the UK supply chain for red meat. Describes the initiatives that were set up to develop a lean supply chain management approach and examines their application in the UK pig and beef industries. Assesses if these changes benefited all participants in the supply chains. Uses semi-structured interviews with key actors in each stage of the supply chain to do this, identifying the power relations within the supply chains and how these affected the outcomes for those participating in the chain. Findings - Concludes that lean initiatives were appropriate for the pig industry but were of limited value for the beef industry. Even within the pig industry, highlights that benefits were not shared equally, with producers, in particular, losing out. Lastly, points out that lean supply chain management is unlikely to be appropriate operationally and commercially in all circumstances in one industry. Argues for a differentiated policy approach and sets out a framework which enables decision makers to select industrial policy options. Research limitations/ implications - Describes the analysis and the framework developed from it. Originality/value - Assesses the effectiveness of lean supply chain management.

The Future Internet is expected to greatly influence how the food and agriculture sector is currently operating. In this paper, we present the specific characteristics of the agri-food sector focusing on how information management in this area will take place under a highly heterogeneous group of actors and services, based on the EU SmartAgriFood project. We also discuss how a new dynamic marketplace will be realized based on the adoption of a number of specialized software modules, called “Generic Enablers” that are currently developed in the context of the EU FI-WARE project. Thus, the paper presents the overall vision for data integration along the supply chain as well as the development and federation of Future Internet services that are expected to revolutionize the agriculture sector.

This paper investigates the drivers of agri-food intra-industry trade (IIT) indices in the European Union (EU-27) member states during the period from 2000–2011. The increased proportion of IIT in matched two-way agri-food trade of the EU-27 member states is consistent with economic integration and economic growth. When export prices were at least 15% higher than the import prices, high-vertical IIT, increased for most member states. This finding suggests that quality improvements occurred when comparing agri-food exports to similar imports of agri-food products. The IIT indices for both horizontal and vertical IIT are positively associated with higher economic development levels, new EU membership and EU enlargement. Additionally, as higher levels of economic development decreases, the size of the economy and marginal IIT increases the effects of agri-food trade liberalization on the costs of the labor market adjustment. Understanding how improvements in agri-food trade quality impact agribusiness and managerial competitiveness reveal significant policy implications.

Schools have evolved to be providers of education as well as suppliers of ancillary services to the population that they serve. This article examines one of these ancillary services, food service, in order to provide some awareness of the political aspects of the decision-making process in choosing whether or not to contract this service, as well as the pros and cons of the situation.
