Estimados: HV.SN = 8,24° (sexo feminino) e 3,44° (sexo masculino); HV.BaN = 24,65°; HV.PoOr = -2,47°. Grupo II Reais: M.SN = 102,59°; M.BaN = 121,29°; M.PoOr = 93,13°. Estimados: HV.SN = 5,86°; HV.BaN = 24,55°; HV.PoOr = -3,43°. Grupo III Reais: M.SN = 104,38°; M.BaN = 122,25°; M.PoOr = 95,99°. Estimados: HV.SN = 7,65°; HV.BaN = 25,51°; HV.PoOr = -0,56°. Grupo IV Reais: M.SN = 104,63°; M.BaN = 123,63°; M.PoOr = 94,80°.

The teaching-learning process requires a constant search on the part of educators for didatic innovations aimed at improving learning. Among these are technological innovations our students are familiar with. In human anatomy teaching, these innovations are increasingly important, since the need for “mechanizing” many structures may make learning tiresome and nonstimulating for students. The search for new technologies may make this process simpler. Another important issue is the need to constantly emphasize applying the knowledge in question, in order for students to better understand the meaning of learning. Accordingly, this project aims to develop an interactive tablet application for neck anatomy. This application will function as a guide to dissection, containing text, photographs, drawings and videos, distributed systematically, with a script emphasizing the clinical and surgical importance of neck anatomy.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are non-hematopoietic multipotent stem cells capable to self-renew and differentiate along different cell lineages. MSCs can be found in adult tissues and extra embryonic tissues like the umbilical cord matrix/Wharton’s Jelly (WJ). The latter constitute a good source of MSCs, being more naïve and having a higher proliferative potential than MSCs from adult tissues like the bone marrow, turning them more appealing for clinical use. It is clear that MSCs modulate both innate and adaptive immune responses and its immunodulatory effects are wide, extending to T cells and dendritic cells, being therapeutically useful for treatment of immune system disorders. Mechanotransduction is by definition the mechanism by which cells transform mechanical signals translating that information into biochemical and morphological changes. Here, we hypothesize that by culturing WJ-MSCs on distinct substrates with different stiffness and biochemical composition, may influence the immunomodulatory capacity of the cells. Here, we showed that WJ-MSCs cultured on distinct PDMS substrates presented different secretory profiles from cells cultured on regular tissue culture polystyrene plates (TCP), showing higher secretion of several cytokines analysed. Moreover, it was also shown that WJ-MSCs cultured on PDMS substrates seems to possess higher immunomodulatory capabilities and to differentially regulate the functional compartments of T cells when compared to MSCs maintained on TCP. Taken together, our results suggest that elements of mechanotransduction seem to be influencing the immunomodulatory ability of MSCs, as well as their secretory profile. Thus, future strategies will be further explored to better understand these observation and to envisage new in vitro culture conditions for MSCs aiming at distinct therapeutic approaches, namely for immune-mediated disorders.

Cabeça de xara is a ready-to-eat meat product, whose production is very characteristic in Alentejo, a particular region of Portugal. It is a galantine usually moulded into parallelepiped shape made with various meats obtained from the Alentejano pig breed reared in the same region, namely deboned pork heads, tongue and connective tissue to which a number of condiments like salt, parsley, wine and pepper, are added. This work intended to test the feasibility of adding vinegar in order to increase the shelf-life of cabeça de xara, by reducing the contaminating microbiota responsible for spoilage, as well as controlling the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. Three independent batches were produced and proximate composition, pH, aw, microbiological parameters and biogenic amines content evaluated. A sensory analysis was also performed throughout the storage period. No significant differences between control and vinegar samples was found regarding the proximate composition of cabeça de xara. As expected, pH is lower in the vinegar samples, however no differences in aw were observed between the two treatments. L. monocytogenes was present from the first month on only in one batch in the control treatment. However, it is inhibited by the addition of vinegar until the third month of storage, where L. monocytogenes is present but below the limit established in the 2073/2005 regulation. The presence of vinegar significantly decreased the content in biogenic amines, particularly cadaverine, putrescine and tyramine, throughout the storage period. Concerning sensory evaluation, no vinegar taste was reported by the panellists in a depreciating way.

We estimated the prevalence of chronic diseases and other health problems reported by adolescents in relation to social and demographic variables and nutritional status. This cross-sectional population-based survey analyzed data from the Health Survey in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil, 2008. We used descriptive statistics and associations between variables with the chisquare test. Prevalence of chronic diseases among adolescents was 19.17%, with asthma showing the highest prevalence (7.59%), followed by heart disease (1.96%), hypertension (1.07%), and diabetes 0.21%. Prevalence rates were 61.53% for health problems, 40.39% for allergy, and 24.83% for frequent headache or migraine. After multivariate analysis using Poisson regression, the factors associated with chronic disease were age 15 to 19 years (PR = 1.38), not attending school (PR = 1.46), having children (PR = 1.84), and obesity (PR = 1.54). Female gender (PR = 1.12) was statistically associated with health problems. The study illustrates that adolescence is a life stage in which chronic disease and health problems can occur.

This research intended to investigate the use of diazepam in conjunction with behavioral strategies to manage uncooperative behavior of child dental patients. The 6 participants received dental treatment during 9 sessions. Using a double-blind design, children received placebo or diazepam and at the same time were submitted to behavior management produces (distraction, explanation, reinforcement and set rule and limits). All sessions were recorded in video-tapes biped in 15 seconds intervals, in which observers recorded child's (crying, body and/or head movements, escape and avoidance) and dentist's behavior. The results indicated that diazepam, considering the used dose, was only effective with one subject. The other participants didn't permit the treatment and showed an increase in their resistance. The behavioral preparation strategies for dental treatment should have been more precisely planned in order to help the child to face the real dental treatment conditions mainly in the first sessions avoiding to reinforce inappropriate behaviors.
