Probability and Statistics were included in the Basic General Education curricula by the Ministry of Public Education (Costa Rica), since 1995. To analyze the teaching reality in these fields, a research was conducted in two educational regions of the country: Heredia and Pérez Zeledón. The survey included university training and updating processes of teachers teaching Statistics and Probability in the schools. The research demonstrated the limited university training in these fields, the dissatisfaction of teachers about it, and the poor support of training institutions to their professional exercise.

ABSTRACT: The imagetic process in Pablo Neruda's work is built through the creation of images resulting from life experiences kept in memories. It is also an existential questioning of the poet based upon the critical look on the historical and personal moment. In this creative process, Neruda's imagetic world strongly references Temuco's natural aspects, the everyday setting of his childhood and adolescence, part of the scenery that remained in his memory and crystalized in his works. The ascertainment that Neruda, in the transition from province to metropolis, does not reach his emotional final destination, remaining in a long transitory state (threshold), allowing us to highlight the emergence of a "border subject", situated between the provincial universe and the urban universe. In Neruda, the concept of border does not only references a territorial boundary between two regions that are politically and culturally different, but also temporal boundaries, since in his stay in the city the poet turns into a body that experiences the location and establishes a critical relationship towards it: he describes it poetically and develops a temporal mobility from the city to the province. This border state shows an intermediary position in individuals that by moving within his/her own country feel in the margins of his/her own culture. In neruda, the notion of border is a recurring issue in the subject of cities, in which the border is related to the geographical space (country, city and harbor) with the time space (present and past), and with cultural space in which concerns the regional identity differences of a certain country. Thus, it is important to approach the analysis of border overcoming regarding the geographical and cultural issues, but above all to the subjective formulations as a result of interpersonal processes. In this present work attempts have been made to study the glass transition temperature of alternative mould materials by using both microwave heating and conventional oven heating. In this present work three epoxy resins, namely R2512, R2515 and R2516, which are commonly used for making injection moulds have been used in combination with two hardeners H2403 and H2409. The magnetron microwave generator used in this research is operating at a frequency of 2.45 GHz with a hollow rectangular waveguide. In order to distinguish the effects between the microwave and conventional heating, a number of experiments were performed to test their mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strengths. Additionally, differential scanning calorimeter technique was implemented to measure the glass transition temperature on both microwave and conventional heating. This study provided necessary evidences to establish that microwave heated mould materials resulted with higher glass transition temperature than the conventional heating. Finally, attempts were also made to study the microstructure of microwave-cured materials by using a scanning electron microscope in order to analyze the morphology of cured specimens.

Over the years, people have often held the hypothesis that negative feedback should be very useful for largely improving the performance of information filtering systems; however, we have not obtained very effective models to support this hypothesis. This paper, proposes an effective model that use negative relevance feedback based on a pattern mining approach to improve extracted features. This study focuses on two main issues of using negative relevance feedback: the selection of constructive negative examples to reduce the space of negative examples; and the revision of existing features based on the selected negative examples. The former selects some offender documents, where offender documents are negative documents that are most likely to be classified in the positive group. The later groups the extracted features into three groups: the positive specific category, general category and negative specific category to easily update the weight. An iterative algorithm is also proposed to implement this approach on RCV1 data collections, and substantial experiments show that the proposed approach achieves encouraging performance.

Multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), first identified in the bone marrow, have subsequently been found in many other tissues, including fat, cartilage, muscle, and bone. Adipose tissue has been identified as an alternative to bone marrow as a source for the isolation of MSCs, as it is neither limited in volume nor as invasive in the harvesting. This study compares the multipotentiality of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) with that of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) from 12 age- and sex-matched donors. Phenotypically, the cells are very similar, with only three surface markers, CD106, CD146, and HLA-ABC, differentially expressed in the BMSCs. Although colony-forming units-fibroblastic numbers in BMSCs were higher than in AMSCs, the expression of multiple stem cell-related genes, like that of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), the Wnt pathway effectors FRAT1 and frizzled 1, and other self-renewal markers, was greater in AMSCs. Furthermore, AMSCs displayed enhanced osteogenic and adipogenic potential, whereas BMSCs formed chondrocytes more readily than AMSCs. However, by removing the effects of proliferation from the experiment, AMSCs no longer out-performed BMSCs in their ability to undergo osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation. Inhibition of the FGF2/fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 signaling pathway demonstrated that FGF2 is required for the proliferation of both AMSCs and BMSCs, yet blocking FGF2 signaling had no direct effect on osteogenic differentiation. Disclosure of potential conflicts of interest is found at the end of this article.

Although numerous genetic and acquired factors are appreciated as risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) [1,2], only recently have male gender [3,4], dyslipoproteinemia [5], and silent atherosclerotic vascular disease [6] been linked to VTE. We recently found that high-density lipoprotein (HDL) deficiency is a key feature of a pattern of dyslipoproteinemia that is associated with VTE in males, and we found that the common TaqI B1 variation in the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene is significantly linked to VTE [5]. However, the TaqI B1/B2 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) itself is unlikely to affect directly CETP activity, but it is linked to nonsynonymous CETP SNPs Ala373Pro and Arg451Gln [7–9]. Here, we demonstrate that these two CETP variations are associated with VTE and low plasma HDL levels in males.

The influence of cholesterol on activated protein C (APC) anticoagulant activity in plasma and on factor Va inactivation was investigated. Anticoagulant and procoagulant activities of phosphatidylcholine/phosphatidylserine (PC/PS) vesicles containing cholesterol were assessed in the presence and absence of APC using factor Xa-1-stage clotting and factor Va inactivation assays. Cholesterol at approximate physiological membrane levels (30%) in PC/PS (60%/10% w/w) vesicles prolonged the factor Xa-1-stage clotting time dose-dependently in the presence of APC but not in the absence of APC. APC-mediated cleavage of purified recombinant factor Va variants that were modified at specific APC cleavage sites (Q306/Q679-factor Va; Q506/Q679-factor Va) was studied to define the effects of cholesterol on APC cleavage at R506 and R306. When compared to control PC/PS vesicles, cholesterol in PC/PS vesicles enhanced factor Va inactivation and the rate of APC cleavage at both R506 and R306. Cholesterol also enhanced APC cleavage rates at R306 in the presence of the APC cofactor, protein S. In summary, APC anticoagulant activity in plasma and factor Va inactivation as a result of cleavages at R506 and R306 by APC is markedly enhanced by cholesterol in phospholipid vesicles. These results suggest that cholesterol in a membrane surface may selectively enhance APC activities. © 2005 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
