The MRMAX chart is a single chart based on the standardized sample means and sample ranges for monitoring the mean vector and the covariance matrix of multivariate processes. User's familiarity with the computation of these statistics is a point in favor of the MRMAX chart. As a single chart, the recently proposed MRMAX chart is very appropriate for supplementary runs rules. In this article, we compare the supplemented MRMAX chart and the synthetic MRMAX chart with the standard MRMAX chart. The supplementary and the synthetic runs rules enhance the performance of the MRMAX chart. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Weight records of Brazilian Nelore cattle, from birth to 630 d of age, recorded every 3 mo, were analyzed using random regression models. Independent variables were Legendre polynomials of age at recording. The model of analysis included contemporary groups as fixed effects and age of dam as a linear and quadratic covariable. Mean trends were modeled through a cubic regression on orthogonal polynomials of age. Up to four sets of random regression coefficients were fitted for animals' direct and maternal, additive genetic, and permanent environmental effects. Changes in measurement error variances with age were modeled through a variance function. Orders of polynomial fit from three to six were considered, resulting in up to 77 parameters to be estimated. Models fitting random regressions modeled the pattern of variances in the data adequately, with estimates similar to those from corresponding univariate analysis. Direct heritability estimates decreased after birth and tended to be lowest at ages at which maternal effect estimates tended to be highest. Maternal heritability estimates increased after birth to a peak around 110 to 120 d of age and decreased thereafter. Additive genetic direct correlation estimates between weights at standard ages (birth, weaning, yearling, and final weight) were moderate to high and maternal genetic and environmental correlations were consistently high.

The regional ocean off southeast Brazil (20 degrees S-28 degrees S) is known as a current-eddy-upwelling region. The proximity of the Brazil Current to the coast in the Cape Sao Tome vicinities, as well as of its quasi-stationary unstable meanders, suggests the possibility of background eddy-induced upwelling. Such phenomenon can intensify the prevalent coastal upwelling due to wind and topographic effects. In this paper, with the help of a numerical simulation, we provide evidence that eddy-induced upwelling in the absence of wind is possible in this region. The simulation was conducted with a regional configuration of the 3-D Princeton Ocean Model initialized by a feature-based implementation of the Brazil Current and Cape Frio eddy, blended with climatology. The Brazil Current (BC) originates with the arrival and bifurcation of the southernmost branch of the South Equatorial Current (sSEC) between 10-20 degrees S. Previous climatological studies showed a stratified sSEC bifurcation and that the resulting southern branch formed a shallow BC - a weak western boundary current. The analysis of three recent synoptic surveys and global model outputs challenge the description of a continuous BC. The sSEC bifurcation signal near the continental margin was unclear in the analyses, and the velocity fields were dominated by mesoscale eddies. Recurrent anticyclones that seemed to be related to the meandering BC led us to construct a picture of a flow strongly influenced by topography and probably very unstable. Given this new emerging scenario, we hypothesize that the Brazil Current is eddy-dominated to the north of 20 degrees S. Citation: Soutelino, R. G., I. C. A. da Silveira, A. Gangopadhyay, and J. A. In this article, we present a new control chart for monitoring the covariance matrix in a bivariate process. In this method, n observations of the two variables were considered as if they came from a single variable (as a sample of 2n observations), and a sample variance was calculated. This statistic was used to build a new control chart specifically as a VMIX chart. The performance of the new control chart was compared with its main competitors: the generalized sampled variance chart, the likelihood ratio test, Nagao's test, probability integral transformation (v(t)), and the recently proposed VMAX chart. Among these statistics, only the VMAX chart was competitive with the VMIX chart. For shifts in both variances, the VMIX chart outperformed VMAX; however, VMAX showed better performance for large shifts (higher than 10%) in one variance.

[EN]Oceanic eddy generation by tall deep-water islands is common phenomenon. It is recognized that these eddies may have a significant impact on the marine system and related biogeochemical fluxes. Hence, it is important to establish favourable conditions for their generation. With this objective, we present an observational study on eddy generation mechanisms by tall deep-water islands, using as a case study the island of Gran Canaria. Observations show that the main generation mechanism is topographic forcing, which leads to eddy generation when the incident oceanic flow is sufficiently intense. Wind shear at the island wake may acts only as an additional eddy-generation trigger mechanism when the impinging oceanic flow is not sufficiently intense. For the case of the island of Gran Canaria we have observed a mean of ten generated cyclonic eddies per year. Eddies are more frequently generated in summer coinciding with intense Trade winds and Canary Current.

[EN]The lagrangian evolution of 4 months old anticyclonic intrathermocline eddy of the Canary Eddy Corridor is investigated from the trajectories of 5 satellites tracked drifting buoys. Buoys were drogued below and above the Ekman depth at 15 m and 100 m, respectively. One buoy remained inside the eddy during almost 4 months being thus a long lived coherent feature with a life span of at least 8 months. The eddy consisted in a central core rotating in solid body rotation with a rather constant periodicity of 4 days and in an outer ring rotating much more slowly with periodicities between 8 and 12 days…

Sub-grid scale (SGS) models are required in order to model the influence of the unresolved small scales on the resolved scales in large-eddy simulations (LES), the flow at the smallest scales of turbulence. In the following work two SGS models are presented and deeply analyzed in terms of accuracy through several LESs with different spatial resolutions, i.e. grid spacings. The first part of this thesis focuses on the basic theory of turbulence, the governing equations of fluid dynamics and their adaptation to LES. Furthermore, two important SGS models are presented: one is the Dynamic eddy-viscosity model (DEVM), developed by \cite{germano1991dynamic}, while the other is the Explicit Algebraic SGS model (EASSM), by \cite{marstorp2009explicit}. In addition, some details about the implementation of the EASSM in a Pseudo-Spectral Navier-Stokes code \cite{chevalier2007simson} are presented. The performance of the two aforementioned models will be investigated in the following chapters, by means of LES of a channel flow, with friction Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau=590$ up to $Re_\tau=5200$, with relatively coarse resolutions. Data from each simulation will be compared to baseline DNS data. Results have shown that, in contrast to the DEVM, the EASSM has promising potentials for flow predictions at high friction Reynolds numbers: the higher the friction Reynolds number is the better the EASSM will behave and the worse the performances of the DEVM will be. The better performance of the EASSM is contributed to the ability to capture flow anisotropy at the small scales through a correct formulation for the SGS stresses. Moreover, a considerable reduction in the required computational resources can be achieved using the EASSM compared to DEVM. Therefore, the EASSM combines accuracy and computational efficiency, implying that it has a clear potential for industrial CFD usage.
