The Kerala region which forms a significant segment of the south—western Indian shield, dominantly comprises charnockites, khondalites and migmatitic gneisses of Precambrian age. Recent investigations have revealed the occurrences of a number of younger granite and syenite plutons in this region, .spatially related to regional fault—lineaments. The granite of Ambalavayal in Wynad district of northern Kerala is a typical member of this suite of intrusives. The thesis is based on a comprehensive study in terms of geology, petrology, geochemistry and petrogenesis of the Ambalavayal granite, basement gneisses, associated pegmatites, quartz veins and related mineralization that together cover an area of about 90 sq km in wynad district of northern Kerala

Der täglich Wechsel von Hell- und Dunkelphasen führte während der Evolution zur Entwicklung innerer Uhren in nahezu allen Organismen. In der Schabe Rhyparobia maderae lokalisierten Läsions- und Transplantationsexperimente die innere Uhr in der akzessorischen Medulla (AME). Dieses kleine birnenförmige Neuropil am ventromedianen Rand der Medulla ist mit etwa 240 Neuronen assoziiert, die eine hohe Anzahl an zum Teil kolokalisierten Neuropeptiden und Neurotransmittern exprimieren. Diese Signalstoffe scheinen essentiell zu sein für die Synchronisation der inneren Uhr mit der Umwelt, der Kopplung der beiden bilateralen AME, der Aufrechterhaltung des circadianen Rhythmus sowie der zeitlichen Steuerung bestimmter Verhaltensweisen. Während die Funktion einiger dieser neuronalen Botenstoffe bereits gut untersucht ist, fehlt sie für andere. Zudem ist noch ungeklärt, wann einzelne Botenstoffe im circadianen Netzwerk agieren. Im Fokus dieser Studie lag daher die Erforschung der Funktion von SIFamide und Corazonin im circadianen Netzwerk sowie die weitere Untersuchung der Funktionen der Neuropeptide MIP und PDF. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass SIFamide auch in R. maderae in vier großen neurosekretorischen Zellen in der pars intercerebralis exprimiert wird. Varikosenreiche SIFamide-immureaktive (-ir) Fasern innervieren eine Vielzahl an Neuropilen und finden sich auch in der Hüllregion der AME. Injektionsexperimente resultierten in einer monophasischen Phasen-Antwort-Kurve (PRC) mit einer Verzögerung zur frühen subjektiven Nacht. SIFamide ist also ein Eingangssignal für das circadiane Netzwerk und könnte in der Kontrolle der Schalf/Wach-Homöostase involviert sein. Auch Corazonin fungiert als Eingangssignal. Da die Injektionsexperimente in einer monophasischen PRC mit einem Phasenvorschub zur späten subjektiven Nacht resultierten, ist davon auszugehen, dass die Corazonin-ir AME-Zelle Bestandteil des Morning-Oszillator-Netzwerkes in R. maderae ist. Darüber hinaus zeigten Backfill-Experimente, dass MIP an der Kopplung beider AMAE beteiligt ist. ELISA-Quantifizierungen der PDF-Level im Tagesverlauf ergaben Schwankungen in der Konzentration, die auf eine Ausschüttung des Peptids während des Tages hindeuten – ähnlich wie es in Drosophila melanogaster der Fall ist. Dies spiegelt sich in der vervollständigten bimodalen PDF-PRC wieder. Hier führen Injektionen zu einem Phasenvorschub, bevor maximale Peptidlevel erreicht werden, sowie zu einer Phasenverzögerung, sobald die Peptidlevel wieder zu sinken beginnen. Die PRCs erlauben somit Rückschlüsse auf den Zeitpunkt der maximalen Peptidfreisetzung. PDF-ir Neuriten findet sich zudem in sämtlichen Ganglien des ventralen Strickleiternervensystems, was eine Funktion in der Kontrolle der Prozesse impliziert, die durch die Mustergeneratoren in Thorakal- und Abdominalganglien gesteuert werden.

La insuficiencia venosa superficial puede ser causa de insuficiencia venosa profunda, por tanto el manejo quirúrgico del sistema superficial puede mejorar la insuficiencia profunda En nuestro medio no se acostumbra a intervenir quirúrgicamente pacientes con insuficiencia venosa mixta bajo la creencia de exacerbar la enfermedad o generar complicaciones. METODOLOGIA: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo, tomando pacientes con insuficiencia venosa mixta, entre el año 2006 y 2010, comparando parámetros hemodinámicos por duplex, y parámetros clínicos, según la clasificación CEAP, en los pacientes sometidos a cirugía convencional y en pacientes que recibieron manejo médico conservador. RESULTADOS: Se obtuvieron 45 pacientes, 65% con manejo quirúrgico y 35% manejo médico, con características sociodemograficas y comorbilidades comparables. Sin diferencia en el número de complicaciones (p=0,64), existió una mejoría en el 77% de los pacientes del grupo quirúrgico en parámetros hemodinámicos y de ningún paciente en el grupo de manejo médico, y en mejoría de ulceras activas de 83% y de 33%, respectivamente. DISCUSION: Nuestro estudio constituye una primera aproximación en la investigación en pacientes con esta patología en nuestro medio que son llevados a manejo quirúrgico. Estos resultados sugieren un posible beneficio en cuanto a los parámetros hemodinámicos venosos profundos y en las características clínicas, especialmente cuando existen ulcera activas, cuando los pacientes con insuficiencia venosa mixta son llevados a manejo quirúrgico. Sin embargo, se requieren de estudios futuros que permitan demostrar así estos resultados en nuestro medio.

Introducción: Conocer y diagnosticar las variaciones más frecuentes de la vasculatura renal es de gran importancia para la planificación de la nefrectomía laparoscópica en el donante y para la reconstrucción vascular en el trasplante renal. De igual forma, considerar las variaciones vasculares −especialmente las del sistema venoso− es indispensable en reconstrucción vascular debido a la gran proporción de variaciones venosas asociadas a aneurismas de la aorta abdominal; además, es ideal en el estudio de condiciones clínicas tales como el síndrome de congestión pélvica y la hematuria. Metodología: Se trata de una revisión de la bibliografía sobre la proporción, diagnóstico, procedimientos quirúrgicos y síndromes clínicos asociados a las variaciones de la vasculatura renal, basada en el material encontrado con la siguiente estrategia de búsqueda: “Renal Artery/abnormalities”[Mesh] OR Renal Veins/abnormalities”[Mesh] AND “surgery”[Mesh] OR “transplantation”[Mesh] OR “radiography”[Mesh] “Kidney Pelvis/abnormalities”[Mesh] AND “Kidney Pelvis/blood supply”[Mesh]. Esta estrategia se modificó de acuerdo con las bases de datos: MEDLINE/PubMed, MEDLINE OVID, SCIENCEDIRECT, HINARI y LILACS. Desarrollo: Se revisó el origen y los tipos más frecuentes de variaciones de la vasculatura renal. Se investigó sobre las implicaciones quirúrgicas y los síndromes clínicos asociados.

Introducción y objetivos: El conocimiento de la anatomía de las venas pulmonares y de la aurícula izquierda es fundamental para la planeación y prevención de posibles complicaciones durante la ablación de las venas pulmonares, procedimiento realizado para el manejo de la fibrilación auricular. Este estudio pretende caracterizar la anatomía (tamaño y forma) de las venas pulmonares y determinar las variantes anatómicas más comunes de las mismas. Métodos: Se analizaron 277 estudios de angioresonancia tridimensional y tomografía computarizada realizados previo al procedimiento de aislamiento de venas pulmonares. Se evaluaron los diámetros de la aurícula izquierda, de los ostia de las venas pulmonares y se determinaron la presencia de venas pulmonares comunes, accesorias y ramificaciones tempranas. Resultados: 75% de nuestros pacientes presentaron la anatomía normal de dos venas pulmonares derechas y dos izquierdas. En un 10,1% de los casos se encontraron venas supernumerarias y en un 11,2% se encontró un tronco común. En un 61% de los pacientes se encontraron ramas ostiales, las cuales en un 39,4% de los casos se presentaron en la vena pulmonar inferior derecha. Conclusiones: La evaluación de la morfología de la aurícula derecha y las venas pulmonares por medio de angioresonancia o tomografía computarizada, es necesaria para la realización de ablación por radiofrecuencia dada la alta frecuencia de variantes anatómicas y presencia de ramas ostiales.

The Rio Tinto river in SW Spain is a classic example of acid mine drainage and the focus of an increasing amount of research including environmental geochemistry, extremophile microbiology and Mars-analogue studies. Its 5000-year mining legacy has resulted in a wide range of point inputs including spoil heaps and tunnels draining underground workings. The variety of inputs and importance of the river as a research site make it an ideal location for investigating sulphide oxidation mechanisms at the field scale. Mass balance calculations showed that pyrite oxidation accounts for over 93% of the dissolved sulphate derived from sulphide oxidation in the Rio Tinto point inputs. Oxygen isotopes in water and sulphate were analysed from a variety of drainage sources and displayed delta O-18((SO4-H2O)) values from 3.9 to 13.6 parts per thousand, indicating that different oxidation pathways occurred at different sites within the catchment. The most commonly used approach to interpreting field oxygen isotope data applies water and oxygen fractionation factors derived from laboratory experiments. We demonstrate that this approach cannot explain high delta O-18((SO4-H2O)) values in a manner that is consistent with recent models of pyrite and sulphoxyanion oxidation. In the Rio Tinto, high delta O-18((SO4-H2O)) values (11.2-13.6 parts per thousand) occur in concentrated (Fe = 172-829 mM), low pH (0.88-1.4), ferrous iron (68-91% of total Fe) waters and are most simply explained by a mechanism involving a dissolved sulphite intermediate, sulphite-water oxygen equilibrium exchange and finally sulphite oxidation to sulphate with O-2. In contrast, drainage from large waste blocks of acid volcanic tuff with pyritiferous veins also had low pH (1.7). but had a low delta O-18((SO4-H2O)) value of 4.0 parts per thousand and high concentrations of ferric iron (Fe(III) = 185 mM, total Fe = 186 mM), suggesting a pathway where ferric iron is the primary oxidant, water is the primary source of oxygen in the sulphate and where sulphate is released directly from the pyrite surface. However, problems remain with the sulphite-water oxygen exchange model and recommendations are therefore made for future experiments to refine our understanding of oxygen isotopes in pyrite oxidation. The difference between the rate of change of cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) following stimulation is thought to be due to circumferential stress relaxation in veins (Mandeville, J.B., Marota, J.J.A., Ayata, C., Zaharchuk, G., Moskowitz, M.A., Rosen, B.R., Weisskoff, R.M., 1999. Evidence of a cerebrovascular postarteriole windkessel with delayed compliance. J. Cereb. Blood Flow Metab. 19, 679–689). In this paper we explore the visco-elastic properties of blood vessels, and present a dynamic model relating changes in CBF to changes in CBV. We refer to this model as the visco-elastic windkessel (VW) model. A novel feature of this model is that the parameter characterising the pressure–volume relationship of blood vessels is treated as a state variable dependent on the rate of change of CBV, producing hysteresis in the pressure–volume space during vessel dilation and contraction. The VW model is nonlinear time-invariant, and is able to predict the observed differences between the time series of CBV and that of CBF measurements following changes in neural activity. Like the windkessel model derived by Mandeville, J.B., Marota, J.J.A., Ayata, C., Zaharchuk, G., Moskowitz, M.A., Rosen, B.R., Weisskoff, R.M., 1999. Evidence of a cerebrovascular postarteriole windkessel with delayed compliance. J. Cereb. Blood Flow Metab. 19, 679–689, the VW model is primarily a model of haemodynamic changes in the venous compartment. The VW model is demonstrated to have the following characteristics typical of visco-elastic materials: (1) hysteresis, (2) creep, and (3) stress relaxation, hence it provides a unified model of the visco-elastic properties of the vasculature. The model will not only contribute to the interpretation of the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signals from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) experiments, but also find applications in the study and modelling of the brain vasculature and the haemodynamics of circulatory and cardiovascular systems.

Background— T NADPH oxidase, by generating reactive oxygen species, is involved in the pathophysiology of many cardiovascular diseases and represents a therapeutic target for the development of novel drugs. A single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) C242T of the p22phox subunit of NADPH oxidase has been reported to be negatively associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) and may predict disease prevalence. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Methods and Results— Using computer molecular modelling we discovered that C242T SNP causes significant structural changes in the extracellular loop of p22phox and reduces its interaction stability with Nox2 subunit. Gene transfection of human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells showed that C242T p22phox reduced significantly Nox2 expression but had no significant effect on basal endothelial O2.- production or the expression of Nox1 and Nox4. When cells were stimulated with TNFα (or high glucose), C242T p22phox inhibited significantly TNFα-induced Nox2 maturation, O2.- production, MAPK and NFκB activation and inflammation (all p<0.05). These C242T effects were further confirmed using p22phox shRNA engineered HeLa cells and Nox2-/- coronary microvascular endothelial cells. Clinical significance was investigated using saphenous vein segments from non CHD subjects after phlebectomies. TT (C242T) allele was common (prevalence of ~22%) and compared to CC, veins bearing TT allele had significantly lower levels of Nox2 expression and O2.- generation in response to high glucose challenge. Conclusions— C242T SNP causes p22phox structural changes that inhibit endothelial Nox2 activation and oxidative response to TNFα or high glucose stimulation. C242T SNP may represent a natural protective mechanism against inflammatory cardiovascular diseases.

The aim of this study was to investigate endothelial venous function, mflammatory markers, and systemic oxidative stress after an oral lipid overload (OLO). We studied 18 healthy adults (9 men; age, 29.2 +/- 0.9 years; body mass index, 22.3 +/- 0.4 kg/m(2)). Blood samples were collected in the fasting state and 3, 4, and 5 hour after the OLO (1000 kcal, 58% fat) for metabolic variables, oxidative stress, inflammatory markers, adiponectin, and resistin. Changes in vein diameter to phenylephrine, acetylcholine, and sodium nitroprusside (dorsal hand vein technique) were measured before and after the OLO. Oral lipid overload increased triglycerides (61 +/- 6 vs 134 +/- 17 mg/dL, P <.001), insulin (7.2 +/- 0.8 vs 10.7 +/- 1.3 mu U/mL, P <.05), and resistin (5.38 +/- 0.5 vs 6.81 +/- 0.7 ng/mL, P <.05) and reduced antioxidant capacity (plasma total antioxidant capacity: 186.7 +/- 56 vs 161.8 +/- 50 U Trolox per microliter plasma, P <.01), vascular reactivity (171.3 +/- 85 vs 894.4 +/- 301 ng/mL, P <.001), and maximum acetylcholine venodilation (105.9% +/- 9% vs 61.0% +/- 7%, P <.05). No changes were observed for sodium nitroprusside. Post-OLO triglycerides were positively correlated with phenylephrine dose (rho = 0.38, P <.05) and resistin (rho = 0.43, P <.01) and negatively correlated with the maximum acetylcholine venodilation (rho = -0.36, P <.05). In conclusion, an OLO impaired venoconstriction responsiveness in healthy subjects, probably because of a reduction in the antioxidant capacity. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of cyclooxygenase (COX) in venous vascular reactivity changes after an oral lipid overload (OLO). Venous endothelial function (dorsal hand vein technique) was evaluated in fasting, 30 minutes after COX inhibition (aspirin-fasting), 2 to 4 hours after an OLO (1000 kcal, 58% fat), and again after COX inhibition (aspirin-OLO, 600 mg/200 mL water) in 10 healthy adults (age, 28.1 +/- 1.3 years; body mass index, 22.3 +/- 0.6 kg/m(2)). Fasting, 2- to 4-hour post-OLO, and 60-minute postaspirin plasma glucose, insulin, and lipids were also evaluated. The OLO increased triglycerides and insulin, reduced low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein, but glycemia and total cholesterol remained unchanged. There were no metabolic differences between OLO and aspirin-OLO. In fasting, aspirin reduced acetylcholine-induced venodilation (107.0% +/- 14% versus 57.3% +/- 11%; P < 0.001). Vascular reactivity was blunted after the OLO (phenylephrine dose: 0.3 +/- 0.2 fasting versus 1.9 +/- 0.8 nmol/min after OLO; P < 0.001) and was partially corrected by aspirin (0.4 +/- 0.2; P < 0.001). Similar changes were observed in maximum venodilation after acetylcholine (107.0% +/- 14% fasting versus 60.4% +/- 9% after OLO, P < 0.001; aspirin-OLO: 95.9% +/- 6%; P < 0.001). The responses to sodium nitroprusside remained unchanged during the study. We conclude that the OLO reduction in the endothelium-dependent venoconstruction and venodilation is partially the result of the action of COX.

We see today many efforts to quantify biodiversity in different biomes. It is very important then to develop and to apply other methodologies that allow us to assess biodiversity. Here we present an example of application of three tools with this goal. We analyzed two populations of Plebeia remota from two distinct biomes that already showed several differences in morphology and behavior. Based on these differences, it has been suggested that the populations of Cunha and Prudentopolis do not represent a single species. In order to verify the existence or absence of gene flow between these two groups, we characterized the patterns of mtDNA through RFLP, the patterns of wing venation through geometric morphometry, and the cuticular hydrocarbons through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. We used bees collected in these two locations and also from colonies which have being kept for around 9 years at Sao Paulo University. We found six different haplotypes in these specimens, of which three of them occurred exclusively in the population of Cunha and three only in the Prudentopolis population. The fact that the populations do not share haplotypes suggests no maternal gene flow between them. The two populations were differentiated by the pattern of the wing veins. They also had different mixtures of cuticle hydrocarbons. Furthermore it was shown that the colonies kept at the university did not hybridize. These two groups may constitute different species. We also show here the importance of using other methodologies than traditional taxonomy to assess and understand biodiversity, especially in bees.

Although angiotensin II-induced venoconstriction has been demonstrated in the rat vena cava and femoral vein, the angiotensin II receptor subtypes (AT(1) or AT(2)) that mediate this phenomenon have not been precisely characterized. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize the pharmacological receptors involved in the angiotensin II-induced constriction of rat venae cavae and femoral veins, as well as the opposing effects exerted by locally produced prostanoids and NO upon induction of these vasomotor responses. The obtained results suggest that both AT(1) and AT(2) angiotensin II receptors are expressed in both veins. Angiotensin II concentration-response curves were shifted toward the right by losartan but not by PD 123319 in both the vena cava and femoral vein. Moreover, it was observed that both 10(-5) M indomethacin and 10(-4) M L-NAME improve the angiotensin II responses in the vena cava and femoral vein. In conclusion, in the rat vena cava and femoral vein, angiotensin II stimulates AT(1) but not AT(2) to induce venoconstriction, which is blunted by vasodilator prostanoids and NO. Inside the `cavernous sinus` or `parasellar region` the human internal carotid artery takes the shape of a siphon that is twisted and torqued in three dimensions and surrounded by a network of veins. The parasellar section of the internal carotid artery is of broad biological and medical interest, as its peculiar shape is associated with temperature regulation in the brain and correlated with the occurrence of vascular pathologies. The present study aims to provide anatomical descriptions and objective mathematical characterizations of the shape of the parasellar section of the internal carotid artery in human infants and its modifications during ontogeny. Three-dimensional (3D) computer models of the parasellar section of the internal carotid artery of infants were generated with a state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction method and analysed using both traditional morphometric methods and novel mathematical algorithms. We show that four constant, demarcated bends can be described along the infant parasellar section of the internal carotid artery, and we provide measurements of their angles. We further provide calculations of the curvature and torsion energy, and the total complexity of the 3D skeleton of the parasellar section of the internal carotid artery, and compare the complexity of this in infants and adults. Finally, we examine the relationship between shape parameters of the parasellar section of the internal carotid artery in infants, and the occurrence of intima cushions, and evaluate the reliability of subjective angle measurements for characterizing the complexity of the parasellar section of the internal carotid artery in infants. The results can serve as objective reference data for comparative studies and for medical imaging diagnostics. They also form the basis for a new hypothesis that explains the mechanisms responsible for the ontogenetic transformation in the shape of the parasellar section of the internal carotid artery.

The Pinguino deposit, located in the low sulfidation epithermal metallogenetical province of the Deseado Massif, Patagonia, Argentina, represents a distinct deposit type in the region. It evolved through two different mineralization events: an early In-bearing polymetallic event that introduced In, Zn, Pb, Ag, Cd, Au, As, Cu, Sn, W and Bi represented by complex sulfide mineralogy, and a late Ag-Au quartz-rich vein type that crosscut and overprints the early polymetallic mineralization. The indium-bearing polymetallic mineralization developed in three stages: an early Cu-Au-In-As-Sn-W-Bi stage (Ps(1)), a Zn-Pb-Ag-In-Cd-Sb stage (Ps(2)) and a late Zn-In-Cd (Ps(3)). Indium concentrations in the polymetallic veins show a wide range (3.4 to 1,184 ppm In). The highest indium values (up to 1,184 ppm) relate to the Ps(2) mineralization stage, and are associated with Fe-rich sphalerites, although significant In enrichment (up to 159 ppm) is also present in the Ps(1) paragenesis associated with Sn-minerals (ferrokesterite and cassiterite). The hydrothermal alteration associated with the polymetallic mineralization is characterized by advanced argillic alteration within the immediate vein zone, and sericitic alteration enveloping the vein zone. Fluid inclusion studies indicate homogenisation temperatures of 308.2-327A degrees C for Ps(1) and 255-312.4A degrees C for Ps(2), and low to moderate salinities (2 to 5 eq.wt.% NaCl and 4 to 9 eq.wt.% NaCl, respectively). delta(34)S values of sulfide minerals (+0.76aEuro degrees to +3.61aEuro degrees) indicate a possible magmatic source for the sulfur in the polymetallic mineralization while Pb isotope ratios for the sulfides and magmatic rocks ((206)Pb/(204)Pb, (207)Pb/(204)Pb and (208)Pb/(204)Pb ratios of 17.379 to 18.502; 15.588 to 15.730 and 38.234 to 38.756, respectively) are consistent with the possibility that the Pb reservoirs for both had the same crustal source. Spatial relationships, hydrothermal alteration styles, S and Pb isotopic data suggest a probable genetic relation between the polymetallic mineralization and dioritic intrusions that could have been the source of metals and hydrothermal fluids. Mineralization paragenesis, alteration mineralogy, geochemical signatures, fluid inclusion data and isotopic data, confirm that the In-bearing polymetallic mineralization from Pinguino deposit is a distinct type, in comparison with the well-known epithermal low sulfidation mineralization from the Deseado Massif.
