Os antioxidantes na dieta podem ter um papel importante na prevenção de algumas doenças crónicas em seres humanos resultantes da oxidação de lípidos e outros componentes celulares por radicais livres. Os mirtilos (Vaccinium sp.) são considerados, de entre os frutos frescos, uma das melhores fontes de antioxidantes. Neste trabalho foram estudados mirtilos Nothern Highbush, da cultivar Bluecrop colhidos no estado de maturação comercial em 5 localizações diferentes: Bouças -Sever do Vouga, Estarreja, Queirã – Vouzela, Oliveira do Hospital e Vila Verde. Foram avaliadas as características físico-químicas (ºbrix, acidez, humidade, calibre, firmeza, elasticidade e parâmetros colorimétricos) dos frutos. Para a determinação da composição fenólica e a atividade antioxidante os mirtilos foram submetidos a extrações sucessivas, com metanol (2x) e depois 2 vezes com uma solução aquosa de acetona (40% v/v), durante 1 h, com o auxílio de um banho de ultrassons. Os extratos obtidos foram utilizados para a determinação da composição fenólica (compostos fenólicos totais, antocianinas e taninos) e da capacidade antioxidante (utilizando os métodos ABTS, DPPH e FRAP). Foi ainda avaliada a influência da conservação durante 6 meses a -20ºC no teor de compostos fenólicos e capacidade antioxidante dos frutos. Pelos resultados obtidos, nos parâmetros de textura avaliados a amostra BBO revelou maior firmeza e elasticidade, e na avaliação da cor a amostra BES apresentou uma tonalidade azul mais acentuada. Os mirtilos provenientes de Estarreja eram os mais ricos em compostos fenólicos totais, em antocianinas e taninos, e que também apresentavam maior atividade antioxidante. O armazenamento durante 6 meses a -20ºC, originou diferenças significativas nas antocianinas e na atividade antioxidante. Em geral as amostras apresentavam diferenças significativas tanto nas suas propriedades físico-químicas, como na composição fenólica e na atividade antioxidante.

Drill cores are essential for the study of deep-sea sediments and on-land sites because often no suitable outcrop is available or accessible. These cores form the backbone of stratigraphical studies using and combining various dating techniques. Cyclostratigraphy is usually based on fast and inexpensive measurements of physical sediment properties. One indirect but highly valuable proxy for reconstructing the sediment composition and variability is sediment color. However, cracks and other disturbances in sediment cores may dramatically influence the quality of color data retrieved either directly from photospectrometry or derived from core image analysis. Here we present simple but powerful algorithms to extract color data from core images, and focus on routines to exclude cracks from these images. Results are discussed using the example of an ODP core from the Ceara Rise in the Central Atlantic. The crack correction approach presented highly improves the quality of color data and allows the easy incorporation of cracked cores into studies based on core images. This facilitates the quick and inexpensive generation of large color datasets directly from quantified core images, for cyclostratigraphy and other purposes.

An edge-colored graph is a graph H together with a function f:E(H) → C where C is a set of colors. Given an edge-colored graph H, the graph induced by the edges of color c C is denoted by H(c). Let G, H, and J be graphs and let μ be a positive integer. A (J, H, G, μ) edge-colored graph decomposition is a set S = {H 1,H 2,...,H t} of edge-colored graphs with color set C = {c 1, c 2,..., c k} such that Hi ≅ H for 1 ≤ i ≤ t; Hi (cj) ≅ G for 1 ≤ i ≤ t and ≤ j ≤ k; and for j = 1, 2,..., k, each edge of J occurs in exactly μ of the graphs H 1(c j ), H 2(c j ),..., H t (c j ). Let Q 3 denote the 3-dimensional cube. Light occlusions are one of the most significant difficulties of photometric stereo methods. When three or more images are available without occlusion, the local surface orientation is overdetermined so that shape can be computed and the shadowed pixels can be discarded. In this paper, we look at the challenging case when only two images are available without occlusion, leading to a one degree of freedom ambiguity per pixel in the local orientation. We show that, in the presence of noise, integrability alone cannot resolve this ambiguity and reconstruct the geometry in the shadowed regions. As the problem is ill-posed in the presence of noise, we describe two regularization schemes that improve the numerical performance of the algorithm while preserving the data. Finally, the paper describes how this theory applies in the framework of color photometric stereo where one is restricted to only three images and light occlusions are common. Experiments on synthetic and real image sequences are presented.

Anthocyanins are synthesized during leaf senescence in certain plants across virtually all biomes, but are most spectacular in the autumn foliage of temperate deciduous forests. The patterns of color production in senescing foliage depend at least partly upon species composition and their phenology. Both ecological and physiological explanations have been raised to explain why plants produce this pigment just before leaf fall. Physiological explanations, as photoprotection, predict that cyanic leaves would be better able to resorb nitrogen during the process of chlorophyll degradation. Ecological explanations predict better dispersal of propagules advertised by association with the brilliantly colored leaves (plausible for only a minority of species), or warning against egg-laying activity of herbivorous insects, as aphids. These hypotheses make predictions that we now can test, to help us understand this old mystery - and majestic phenomenon.
