In this paper we establish the connections between two different extensions of Z(4)-linearity for binary Hamming spaces, We present both notions - propelinearity and G-linearity - in the context of isometries and group actions, taking the viewpoint of geometrically uniform codes extended to discrete spaces. We show a double inclusion relation: binary G-linear codes are propelinear codes, and translation-invariant propelinear codes are G-linear codes. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the synthesis of zirconia microneedles by the direct nucleation of particles inside a hexagonal swollen liquid crystal (SLC) (cell parameter a = 27 nm) prepared by mixing with the proper ratio, an aqueous solution of sulfated zirconium colloids, a cationic surfactant (cetylpyridinium chloride), cychlohexane as swelling agent with an oil over water ratio of 2.5 (vol.), and 1-pentanol as cosurfactant. After a slow crystallogenesis that can be enhanced by an initial induction step under moderate temperature, particles in the centimeter range can be obtained, with a very high shape ratio (over 100). These particles are made of crystalline octahydrate zirconium oxychloride containing pores of 20 nm diameter, aligned along the main axis of the liquid crystal, as the fingerprint of the oil cylinders present in the hexagonal phase. The morphology of these particles confirms that the shaping mechanism is based on true liquid crystal templating (TLCT). Further thermal treatment of these particles, after extraction from the SLC, leads to the crystallization of zirconia with the same needlelike morphology as the zirconium oxychloride.

The three-dimensional structure of human uropepsin complexed with pepstatin has been modelled using human pepsin as a template. Uropepsin is an aspartic proteinase from the urine, produced in the form of pepsinogen A in the gastric mucosa. The structure is bilobal, consisting of two predominantly beta -sheet lobes which, as observed in other aspartic proteinases, are related by a pseudo twofold axis. A structural comparison between binary complexes of pepsin:pepstatin and uropepsin:pepstatin is discussed. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

The molar single activity coefficients associated with propionate ion (Pr) have been determined at 25 degrees C and ionic strengths comprised between 0.300 and 3.00 M, adjusted with NaClO4, as background electrolyte. The investigation was carried out potentiometrically by using a second class Hg/Hg2Pr2 electrode. It was found that the dependence of propionate activity coefficients as a function of ionic strength (I) can be assessed through the following empirical equation: log y(Pr) = -0.185 I-3/2 + 0.104 I-2. Next, simple equations relating stoichiometric protonation constants of several monocarboxylates and formation constants associated with 1:1 complexes involving some bivalent cations and selected monocarboxylates, in aqueous solution, at 25 degrees C, as a function of ionic strength were derived, allowing the interconversion of parameters from one ionic strength to another, up to I = 3.00 M. In addition, thermodynamic formation constants as well as parameters associated with activity coefficients of the complex species in the equilibria are estimated. The body of results shows that the proposed calculation procedure is very consistent with critically selected experimental data.

The existence of multiple active levels in a photorefractive Bi12TiO20 crystal is here investigated at 514.5nm wavelength. We carry out two-wave mixing experiments using symmetrically incident beams of equal intensities. A large amplitude fast phase modulation in one of the beams reduces the fringes visibility and improves the detection of the generated frequency modulated signals in both (R and S) output directions. Diffraction efficiencies of the phase (photorefractive) and the absorption (photochromic) gratings are quantitatively computed as functions of the grating period. Results show that the absorption grating has two distinct components: one associated to the photorefractive trap density modulation and another related to local light-induced effects between different levels. The photorefractive grating was also investigated at 633nm and 594nm (besides 514.5nm) and a significant quenching of the photorefractive effect was observed at these wavelengths.

The interaction between metaphosphate chains and the metal ions Ca2+ and Eu3+ has been studied in water by Eu3+ luminescence, infrared absorption, and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. Two main families of sites could be identified for the metal ions in the aqueous polyphosphate colloidal systems: (1) cagelike sites provided by the polyphosphate chain and (2) a family which arises following saturation of cagelike sites. Occupation of this second family leads to supramolecular interactions between polyphosphate chains and the consequent destabilization of the colloidal system. In the polyphosphate-Ca2+ system, this destabilization appears as a coacervation process. Equilibrium existing between colloidal species as a function of the compositions could be reasoned based on the spectroscopic measurements. The determination of coordination numbers and the correlation of the results with the observation of coacervates show that Eu3+ luminescence properties can be used to probe in a unique way the coacervation process.

Simple equations were derived relating stoichiometric protonation constants of several monocarboxylates and formation constants associated with 1:1 complexes involving some bivalent cations and selected monocarboxylates, in aqueous sodium perchlorate media, at 25 degrees C, as a function of ionic strength (I), allowing the interconversion of parameters from one ionic strength to another, up to I = 3.00 M. In addition, thermodynamic formation constants as well as activity coefficients of the species involved in the equilibria were estimated. Branched polyethylene/high-density polyethylene blends (BPE/HDPE) with a wide range of molecular weights, melt flow indexes (MFI), and intrinsic viscosity were prepared using the homogeneous binary catalyst system composed by Ni(alpha-diimine)Cl-2 (1) (alpha-diimine = 1,4-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-acenaphthenediimine) and {Tp(Ms*)} TiCl3 (2) (Tp(Ms*)=hydridobis(3-mesitylpyrazol-1-yl)(5-mesityl-pyrazol-1-yl)) activated with MAO and/or TIBA in hexane at two different polymerization temperatures (30 and 55 degreesC) and by varying the nickel loading molar fraction (x(Ni)). At all Temperatures, a non-linear correlation between the x(Ni) and the productivity was observed, suggesting the occurrence of a synergistic effect between the nickel and the titanium catalyst precursors, which is more pronounced at 55 degreesC. The molecular weight of the BPE/HDPE blends considerably decreases with increasing Al/M molar ratio. The melt flow indexes (MFI) and intrinsic viscosities (eta) are strongly affected by x(Ni), but the melting temperatures are nearly constant, 132 +/- 3 degreesC. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) shows the formation of different polymeric materials where the stiffness vanes according, to the x(Ni) and temperature used in the polymerization reaction. The surface morphology of the BPE/HDPE blends studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a low miscibility between the PE phases resulting in the formation of a sandwich structure after etching with o-xylene.

This work presents a review of recent developments in phase-stepping real-time holographic interferometry with photorefractive sillenite crystals. Quantitative results are shown in micro-rotation, micro-displacement, and micro-deformation measurements, and in wave-optics and surface analysis as well. The phase stepping was carried out in a four-frame process and the resulting phase map was unwrapped by applying a sin/cos filter. The experimental results are in good agreement with the ones obtained through other means, showing the promising potentialities of phase-stepping real-time holographic interferometry for in situ visualisation, monitoring and analysis in non-destructive testing.

This paper describes particle aggregation process during gelation of SnO2 hydrosols. The effect of the concentration of SnO2 colloidal particles on the kinetics of gelation of hydrosols containing PVA (poly(vinyl alcohol)) was analysed by dynamic rheological measurements. The complex viscosity and the storage and loss moduli have been measured during the sol-gel transition and the results correlated to mass fractal growth, nearly linear growth models, and scalar percolation theory. The analysis of the experimental results shows that a linear aggregation occurs in the initial step of the gelation followed by a fractal growth to form a three-dimensional network. Near the gel point this physical gel exhibits the typical scaling expected from an electrical percolation analogy. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Various properties of particles can be altered by coating them with a layer of different chemical composition. Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) particles has been coated with silica for control of their sintering, corrosion resistance, and stabilization of magnetic properties. This silica cover was obtained by hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in 2-propanol. This material was characterized by transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, (XEDS) X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometry, (XPS) X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and (VSM) vibrating sample magnetometry. YIG was heterocoagulated by silica as indicated by TEM micrographies. XPS measurements indicated that only binding energy for silicon and oxygen was found on the silica shell, which confirms that the YIG was covered. The values of the saturation magnetization differ from the heterocoagulated system to well-crystallized YIG.

This study focuses on the seasonal presence of acicular crystals in the cambial zone of Citharexylum myrianthum Chain. (Verbenaceae). Specimens collected in different months from 1996 to 2000 were examined for the abundance of acicular crystals in the cambium. This information was correlated with the phenology of the species and the climate of the region. Acicular calcium oxalate crystals were found in cambial fusiform and ray cell initials, as well as in their daughter cells. An abundance of crystals was observed during periods of water deficit and leaf fall (July). Fewer crystals were found in the beginning of the wet season and bud swelling (September). When trees were flowering and the soil was wet (November and December), acicular crystals were rarely observed. During this period, acicular crystals were found in differentiating phloem and xylem parenchyma cells, in fully differentiated phloem cells, but not in fully differentiated xylem cells.

Luminescent Eu3+-containing polyphosphate tungstate aqueous colloidal systems were prgared and studied as a function of the relative polyphosphate tungstate content. In polyphosphate-rich solutions, Eu-H- ions occupy cagelike sites composed of phosphate groups from the metaphosphate chains. In these sites, an average number of 0.5 water molecule coordinates to an Eu3+ ion and the 500 emission quantum efficiency is 0.22. Tungstatc addition leads to important modifications in neighboring Eu3+ leading to coordination sites in the aqueous medium where metal ions are completely hidden from interactions with solvent molecules. Transmission electron microscopy results clearly show \V-rich nanoparticles with sizes between 5 and 10 nm for all tungstate relative concentrations. For high tungstatc relative contents (above 30 mol %), spectroscopic results suggest the presence of Eu34- in polyoxometalate (P0M)-like sites by comparison with the well-known decatungstoeuropate [EuW10O36](9-) structure. These new aqueous colloids display surprisingly high 5llo emission quantum efficiencies of ca 80% because of the strong ligand field provided by tungstate POM ligands and the complete absence of water molecules from the Eu3+ first coordination shell.
