The synthesis is reported of a new series of oligo(aryleneethynylene) (OAE) derivatives of up to ca. 6 nm in molecular length (OAE9) using iterative Pd-mediated Sonogashira cross-coupling methodology. The oligo-p-phenyleneethynylene cores of the molecular wires are functionalized at both termini with pyridyl units for attachment to gold leads. The molecular structures determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis are reported for OAE4, OAE5, OAE7, and OAE8a. The charge transport characteristics of derivatives OAE3–OAE9 in single-molecular junctions have been studied using the mechanically controlled break junction technique. The data demonstrate that the junction conductance decreases with increasing molecular length. A transition from coherent transport via tunneling to a hopping mechanism is found for OAE wires longer than ca. 3 nm.

We report on the structural characterization of junctions between atomically well-defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) by means of low-temperature, noncontact scanning probe microscopy. We show that the combination of simultaneously acquired frequency shift and tunneling current maps with tight binding (TB) simulations allows a comprehensive characterization of the atomic connectivity in the GNR junctions. The proposed approach can be generally applied to the investigation of graphene nanomaterials and their interconnections and is thus expected to become an important tool in the development of graphene-based circuitry.

Tunnel junctions are key for developing multijunction solar cells (MJSC) for ultra-high concentration applications. We have developed a highly conductive, high bandgap p  + + -AlGaAs/n  + + -GaInP tunnel junction with a peak tunneling current density for as-grown and thermal annealed devices of 996 A/cm 2 and 235 A/cm 2, respectively. The J–V characteristics of the tunnel junction after thermal annealing, together with its behavior at MJSCs typical operation temperatures, indicate that this tunnel junction is a suitable candidate for ultra-high concentrator MJSC designs. The benefits of the optical transparency are also assessed for a lattice-matched GaInP/GaInAs/Ge triple junction solar cell, yielding a current density increase in the middle cell of 0.506 mA/cm 2 with respect to previous designs.

In the last few decades there has been great interest in III-V multijunction solar cells (MJSC) for concentrator applications due to their promise to significantly reduce the cost of electricity. Being formed by series connection of several solar cells with different bandgaps, a key role in a MJSC structure is played by the tunnel junctions (TJ) aimed to implement such series connection. Essentially, tunnel junctions (tunnel diodes or Esaki diodes) are thin, heavily doped p-n junctions where quantum tunneling plays a key role as a conduction mechanism. Such devices were discovered by Nobel laureate Leo Esaki at the end of 1950. The key feature of tunnel junctions for their application in MJSC is that, as long as quantum tunneling is the dominant conduction mechanism, they exhibit a linear I-V dependence until the peak tunneling current (Jp) is reached. This initial ohmic region in the I-V curve is ideal for implementing low-loss interconnections between the subcells with different energy bandgaps that constitute a MJSC.

The electrical characteristics of CVD-diamond/n(+)-Si heterojunction devices are reported. Below 250 K the diodes show an unusual inversion of their rectification properties. This behavior is attributed to an enhanced tunneling component due to interface states, which change their occupation with the applied bias. The temperature dependence of the loss tangent shows two relaxation processes with different activation energies. These processes are likely related with two parallel charge transport mechanisms, one through the diamond grain, and the other through the grain boundary. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy was performed on a (15,0) single wall carbon nanotube partially wrapped by Poly(3-hexyl-thiophene). On the bare nanotube section, the local density of states is in good agreement with the theoretical model based on local density approximation and remarkably is not perturbed by the polymer wrapping. On the coiled section, a rectifying current-voltage characteristic has been observed along with the charge transfer from the polymer to the nanotube. The electron transfer from Poly(3-hexyl-thiophene) to metallic nanotube was previously theoretically proposed and contributes to the presence of the Schottky barrier at the interface responsible for the rectifying behavior.

Conflict occurs when two or more trains approach the same junction within a specified time. Such conflicts result in delays. Current practices to assign the right of way at junctions achieve orderly and safe passage of the trains, but do not attempt to reduce the delays. A traffic controller developed in the paper assigns right of way to impose minimum total weighted delay on the trains. The traffic flow model and the optimisation technique used in this controller are described. Simulation studies of the performance of the controller are given.

Purpose of study: Traffic conflicts occur when trains on different routes approach a converging junction in a railway network at the same time. To prevent collisions, a right-of-way assignment is needed to control the order in which the trains should pass the junction. Such control action inevitably requires the braking and/or stopping of trains, which lengthens their travelling times and leads to delays. Train delays cause a loss of punctuality and hence directly affect the quality of service. It is therefore important to minimise the delays by devising a suitable right-of-way assignment. One of the major difficulties in attaining the optimal right-of-way assignment is that the number of feasible assignments increases dramatically with the number of trains. Connected-junctions further complicate the problem. Exhaustive search for the optimal solution is time-consuming and infeasible for area control (multi-junction). Even with the more intelligent deterministic optimisation method revealed in [1], the computation demand is still considerable, which hinders real-time control. In practice, as suggested in [2], the optimality may be traded off by shorter computation time, and heuristic searches provide alternatives for this optimisation problem.

This paper introduces an event-based traffic model for railway systems adopting fixed-block signalling schemes. In this model, the events of trains' arrival at and departure from signalling blocks constitute the states of the traffic flow. A state transition is equivalent to the progress of the trains by one signalling block and it is realised by referring to past and present states, as well as a number of pre-calculated look-up tables of run-times in the signalling block under various signalling conditions. Simulation results are compared with those from a time-based multi-train simulator to study the improvement of processing time and accuracy.

Train delay is one of the most important indexes to evaluate the service quality of the railway. Because of the interactions of movement among trains, a delayed train may conflict with trains scheduled on other lines at junction area. Train that loses conflict may be forced to stop or slow down because of restrictive signals, which consequently leads to the loss of run-time and probably enlarges more delays. This paper proposes a time-saving train control method to recover delays as soon as possible. In the proposed method, golden section search is adopted to identify the optimal train speed at the expected time of restrictive signal aspect upgrades, which enables the train to depart from the conflicting area as soon as possible. A heuristic method is then developed to attain the advisory train speed profile assisting drivers in train control. Simulation study indicates that the proposed method enables the train to recover delays as soon as possible in case of disturbances at railway junctions, in comparison with the traditional maximum traction strategy and the green wave strategy.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have excellent electrical, mechanical and electromechanical properties. When CNTs are incorporated into polymers, electrically conductive composites with high electrical conductivity at very low CNT content (often below 1% wt CNT) result. Due to the change in electrical properties under mechanical load, carbon nanotube/polymer composites have attracted significant research interest especially due to their potential for application in in-situ monitoring of stress distribution and active control of strain sensing in composite structures or as strain sensors. To sucessfully develop novel devices for such applications, some of the major challenges that need to be overcome include; in-depth understanding of structure-electrical conductivity relationships, response of the composites under changing environmental conditions and piezoresistivity of different types of carbon nanotube/polymer sensing devices. In this thesis, direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) conductivity of CNT-epoxy composites was investigated. Details of microstructure obtained by scanning electron microscopy were used to link observed electrical properties with structure using equivalent circuit modeling. The role of polymer coatings on macro and micro level electrical conductivity was investigated using atomic force microscopy. Thermal analysis and Raman spectroscopy were used to evaluate the heat flow and deformation of carbon nanotubes embedded in the epoxy, respectively, and related to temperature induced resistivity changes. A comparative assessment of piezoresistivity was conducted using randomly mixed carbon nanotube/epoxy composites, and new concept epoxy- and polyurethane-coated carbon nanotube films. The results indicate that equivalent circuit modelling is a reliable technique for estimating values of the resistance and capacitive components in linear, low aspect ratio-epoxy composites. Using this approach, the dominant role of tunneling resistance in determining the electrical conductivity was confirmed, a result further verified using conductive-atomic force microscopy analysis. Randomly mixed CNT-epoxy composites were found to be highly sensitive to mechanical strain and temperature variation compared to polymer-coated CNT films. In the vicinity of the glass transition temperature, the CNT-epoxy composites exhibited pronounced resistivity peaks. Thermal and Raman spectroscopy analyses indicated that this phenomenon can be attributed to physical aging of the epoxy matrix phase and structural rearrangement of the conductive network induced by matrix expansion. The resistivity of polymercoated CNT composites was mainly dominated by the intrinsic resistivity of CNTs and the CNT junctions, and their linear, weakly temperature sensitive response can be described by a modified Luttinger liquid model. Piezoresistivity of the polymer coated sensors was dominated by break up of the conducting carbon nanotube network and the consequent degradation of nanotube-nanotube contacts while that of the randomly mixed CNT-epoxy composites was determined by tunnelling resistance between neighbouring CNTs. This thesis has demonstrated that it is possible to use microstructure information to develop equivalent circuit models that are capable of representing the electrical conductivity of CNT/epoxy composites accurately. New designs of carbon nanotube based sensing devices, utilising carbon nanotube films as the key functional element, can be used to overcome the high temperature sensitivity of randomly mixed CNT/polymer composites without compromising on desired high strain sensitivity. This concept can be extended to develop large area intelligent CNT based coatings and targeted weak-point specific strain sensors for use in structural health monitoring.

Engineered grain boundary Josephson junctions in YBaCuO were formed on bicrystal Y-ZrO2 substrates. Laser deposited films were patterned into micron size microbridges. The authors obsd. a pronounced correlation between superconducting transport properties of grain boundary junctions and the misorientation angle θ between the two halves of the bicrystal. The crit. Josephson current Ic decreased about four orders of magnitude as θ was increased from 0 to 45 degrees. Clear microwave and magnetic field responses were obsd. at 77 K. At this temp., crit. current times normal resistance products, IcRn, of up to 1 mV were measured for low angle grain boundaries, and Shapiro steps were obsd. up to that voltage. DC SQUIDs were fabricated, and best performance at 77 K was obtained for θ = 32° with a 4-μm strip width. To utilize the higher IcRn value of a lower θ, submicron junctions have to be developed. This project investigated the calcium distributions of the skin, and the growth patterns of skin substitutes grown in the laboratory, using mathematical models. The research found that the calcium distribution in the upper layer of the skin is controlled by three different mechanisms, not one as previously thought. The research also suggests that tight junctions, which are adhesions between neighbouring skin cells, cannot be solely responsible for the differences in the growth patterns of skin substitutes and normal skin.

We report the direct observation of electrochemical potential and local transport field variations near scatterers like grain boundaries, triple points, and voids in thin platinum films studied by scanning tunneling potentiometry. The field is highest at a void, followed by a triple point and a grain boundary. The local transport field near a void can even be four orders of magnitude higher than the macroscopic field, indicating that the void is the most likely place for an electromigration induced failure. The field build up for a particular type of scatterer depends on the grain connectivity. We estimate an average grain boundary reflection coefficient for the film from the temperature dependence of its resistivity.

Two beetle-type scanning tunneling microscopes are described. Both designs have the thermal stability of the Besocke beetle and the simplicity of the Wilms beetle. Moreover, sample holders were designed that also allow both semiconductor wafers and metal single crystals to be studied. The coarse approach is a linear motion of the beetle towards the sample using inertial slip–stick motion. Ten wires are required to control the position of the beetle and scanner and measure the tunneling current. The two beetles were built with different sized piezolegs, and the vibrational properties of both beetles were studied in detail. It was found, in agreement with previous work, that the beetle bending mode is the lowest principal eigenmode. However, in contrast to previous vibrational studies of beetle-type scanning tunneling microscopes, we found that the beetles did not have the “rattling” modes that are thought to arise from the beetle sliding or rocking between surface asperities on the raceway. The mass of our beetles is 3–4 times larger than the mass of beetles where rattling modes have been observed. We conjecture that the mass of our beetles is above a “critical beetle mass.” This is defined to be the beetle mass that attenuates the rattling modes by elastically deforming the contact region to the extent that the rattling modes cannot be identified as distinct modes in cross-coupling measurements.
