The James-Stein estimator is a biased shrinkage estimator with uniformly smaller risk than the risk of the sample mean estimator for the mean of multivariate normal distribution, except in the one-dimensional or two-dimensional cases. In this work we have used more heuristic arguments and intensified the geometric treatment of the theory of James-Stein estimator. New type James-Stein shrinking estimators are proposed and the Mahalanobis metric used to address the James-Stein estimator. . To evaluate the performance of the estimator proposed, in relation to the sample mean estimator, we used the computer simulation by the Monte Carlo method by calculating the mean square error. The result indicates that the new estimator has better performance relative to the sample mean estimator.

No presente trabalho, investigamos o transporte eletrônico molecular em dois compostos orgânicos, o Ponceau SS (PSS) e o Oligo-(para)fenileno-vinileno (PPV) através de cálculos ab initio e função de Green de não equilíbrio (FGNE). Estes métodos demonstraram equivalência para a descrição destes dispositivos moleculares. Fizemos cálculos quânticos para o Hamiltoniano derivado de Hartree-Fock (HF) e obtivemos as propriedades de corrente-voltagem (I-V) para as duas estruturas moleculares. Com o método FGNE conseguimos modelar o transporte através de um sistema de multiníveis eletrônicos obtendo a corrente descrevendo as regiões de ressonância e a assimetria do sistema. Como resposta o PSS demonstrou assimetria para polarizações direta e reversa e a ressonância é alcançada mostrando que o dispositivo opere como um transistor molecular bi-direcional. Para o PPV investigamos também as propriedades geométricas através da conexão entre transporte eletrônico e o grau de quiralidade molecular que foi calculado usando o índice quiral que depende apenas das posições atômicas. Obtivemos que moléculas quirais e propriedades estruturais podem induzir uma assimetria no transporte eletrônico, resultando num processo de retificação. Também obtivemos que a resposta elétrica (I-V) e momento de dipolo elétrico são proporcionais ao grau de quiralidade molecular. Estes resultados sugerem que o transporte eletrônico neste sistema pode ser explorado na avaliação do seu grau de quiralidade.

Fuel cells are a very promising solution to the problems of power generation and emission of pollutant to the environment, excellent to be used in stationary application and mobile application too. The high cost of production of these devices, mainly due to the use of noble metals as anode, is a major obstacle to massive production and deployment of this technology, however the use of intermetallic phases of platinum combined with other metals less noble has been evaluated as electrodes in order to minimize production costs and still being able to significantly improve the catalytic performance of the anode. The study of intermetallic phases, exclusively done by experimental techniques is not complete and demand that other methods need to be applied to a deeper understanding of the behavior geometric properties and the electronic structure of the material, to this end the use of computer simulation methods, which have proved appropriate for a broader understanding of the geometric and electronic properties of the materials involved, so far not so well understood.. The use of computational methods provides answers to explain the behavior of the materials and allows assessing whether the intermetallic may be a good electrode. In this research project was used the Quantum-ESPRESSO package, based on the DFT theory, which provides the self-consistent field calculations with great precision, calculations of the periodic systems interatomic force, and other post-processing calculations that points to a knowledge of the geometric and electronic properties of materials, which may be related to other properties of them, even the electrocatalytic. The electronic structure is determined from the optimized geometric structure of materials by analyzing the density of states (DOS) projected onto atomic orbital, which determines the influence of the electrocatalytic properties of the material... The main purpose of this research is to raise, through lab rehearsals, the geometric properties of some oxisols from the region of Vale do Paraíba as well as comparing them to demands prescribed by Technical Specifications ESP08/05 of the Road Department of the State of Paraná, for sub-base or fine grained lateritic soil base (SAFL) and in the Technical Specification ET-DEP00/006 of the Road Department of the State of São Paulo (DER/SP) for subbase or crushed stone base. According to the results that were obtained it will be feasible to appraise the usage of these sorts of soils in structure layers of low-weight traffic pavements

The complex analysis is, in actuality, a fundamental mathematical object, given its applicability to various areas of science. This paper proposes a more interesting intertwining of mathematical content to the Visual Arts, through computer graphics. The presentation of aesthetic standards, using the “domain coloring” for viewing a complex function, shows that algebraic and geometric properties can be “colored” which makes its study more human, contextualized, pleasant and dynamic, leading to greater ability to understand, to absorb and to create concepts. This work shows the contribution to the interdisciplinarity to study of mathematics.

Diese Arbeit besch"aftigt sich mit algebraischen Zyklen auf komplexen abelschen Variet"aten der Dimension 4. Ziel der Arbeit ist ein nicht-triviales Element in $Griff^{3,2}(A^4)$ zu konstruieren. Hier bezeichnet $A^4$ die emph{generische} abelsche Variet"at der Dimension 4 mit Polarisierung von Typ $(1,2,2,2)$. Die ersten drei Kapitel sind eine Wiederholung von elementaren Definitionen und Begriffen und daher eine Festlegung der Notation. In diesen erinnern wir an elementare Eigenschaften der von Saito definierten Filtrierungen $F_S$ und $Z$ auf den Chowgruppen (vgl. cite{Sa0} und cite{Sa}). Wir wiederholen auch eine Beziehung zwischen der $F_S$-Filtrierung und der Zerlegung von Beauville der Chowgruppen (vgl. cite{Be2} und cite{DeMu}), welche aus cite{Mu} stammt. Die wichtigsten Begriffe in diesem Teil sind die emph{h"ohere Griffiths' Gruppen} und die emph{infinitesimalen Invarianten h"oherer Ordnung}. Dann besch"aftigen wir uns mit emph{verallgemeinerten Prym-Variet"aten} bez"uglich $(2:1)$ "Uberlagerungen von Kurven. Wir geben ihre Konstruktion und wichtige geometrische Eigenschaften und berechnen den Typ ihrer Polarisierung. Kapitel ref{p-moduli} enth"alt ein Resultat aus cite{BCV} "uber die Dominanz der Abbildung $p(3,2):mathcal R(3,2)longrightarrow mathcal A_4(1,2,2,2)$. Dieses Resultat ist von Relevanz f"ur uns, weil es besagt, dass die generische abelsche Variet"at der Dimension 4 mit Polarisierung von Typ $(1,2,2,2)$ eine verallgemeinerte Prym-Variet"at bez"uglich eine $(2:1)$ "Uberlagerung einer Kurve vom Geschlecht $7$ "uber eine Kurve vom Geschlecht $3$ ist. Der zweite Teil der Dissertation ist die eigentliche Arbeit und ist auf folgende Weise strukturiert: Kapitel ref{Deg} enth"alt die Konstruktion der Degeneration von $A^4$. Das bedeutet, dass wir in diesem Kapitel eine Familie $Xlongrightarrow S$ von verallgemeinerten Prym-Variet"aten konstruieren, sodass die klassifizierende Abbildung $Slongrightarrow mathcal A_4(1,2,2,2)$ dominant ist. Desweiteren wird ein relativer Zykel $Y/S$ auf $X/S$ konstruiert zusammen mit einer Untervariet"at $Tsubset S$, sodass wir eine explizite Beschreibung der Einbettung $Yvert _Thookrightarrow Xvert _T$ angeben k"onnen. Das letzte und wichtigste Kapitel enth"ahlt Folgendes: Wir beweisen dass, die emph{ infinitesimale Invariante zweiter Ordnung} $delta _2(alpha)$ von $alpha$ nicht trivial ist. OBJECTIVES:: Metacarpal juxta-articular bone is altered in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). However, a detailed analysis of disease related geometrical adaptations of the metacarpal shaft is missing. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of RA disease, forearm muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), age and sex on bone geometry at the metacarpal shaft. METHODS:: In 64 RA patients and 128 control subjects geometric properties of the third metacarpal bone mid-shaft and forearm muscle CSA were measured by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). Linear models were performed for cortical CSA, total bone CSA, polar stress-strain Index (polar SSI, a surrogate for bone's resistance to bending and torsion), cortical thickness and Metacarpal Index (MI=cortical CSA/total CSA) with explanatory variables muscle CSA, age, RA status and sex. RESULTS:: Forearm muscle CSA was associated with cortical and total metacarpal CSA, and polar SSI. RA group status was associated with all bone parameters except cortical CSA. There was a significant interaction between RA status and age, indicating that the RA group had a greater age-related decrease in cortical CSA, cortical thickness and MI. CONCLUSIONS:: Bone geometry of the metacarpal shaft is altered in RA patients compared to healthy controls. While bone mass of the metacarpal shaft is adapted to forearm muscle mass, cortical thickness and MI are reduced but outer bone shaft circumference and polar SSI increased in RA patients. These adaptations correspond to an enhanced aging pattern in RA patients.

Currently, the Specification for Aluminum Structures (Aluminum Association, 2010) shows thin-walled aluminum plate sections with radii greater than eight inches have a lower compressive strength capacity than a flat plate with the same width and thickness. This inconsistency with intuition, which suggests any degree of folding a plate should increase its elastic buckling strength, inspired this study. A wide range of curvatures are studied—from a nearly flat plate to semi-circular. To quantify the curvature, a single non-dimensional parameter is used to represent all combinations of width, thickness and radius. Using the finite strip method (CU-FSM), elastic local buckling stresses are investigated. Using the ratio of stress values of curved plates compared to flat plates of the same size, equivalent plate-buckling coefficients are calculated. Using this data, nonlinear regression analyses are performed to develop closed form equations for five different edge support conditions. These equations can be used to calculate the elastic critical buckling stress for any curved aluminum section when the geometric properties (width, thickness, and radius) and the material properties (elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio) are known. This procedure is illustrated in examples, each showing the applicability of the derived equations to geometries other than those investigated in this study and also providing comparisons with theoretically exact numerical analysis results.

The objective of this research was to develop a high-fidelity dynamic model of a parafoilpayload system with respect to its application for the Ship Launched Aerial Delivery System (SLADS). SLADS is a concept in which cargo can be transfered from ship to shore using a parafoil-payload system. It is accomplished in two phases: An initial towing phase when the glider follows the towing vessel in a passive lift mode and an autonomous gliding phase when the system is guided to the desired point. While many previous researchers have analyzed the parafoil-payload system when it is released from another airborne vehicle, limited work has been done in the area of towing up the system from ground or sea. One of the main contributions of this research was the development of a nonlinear dynamic model of a towed parafoil-payload system. After performing an extensive literature review of the existing methods of modeling a parafoil-payload system, a five degree-of-freedom model was developed. The inertial and geometric properties of the system were investigated to predict accurate results in the simulation environment. Since extensive research has been done in determining the aerodynamic characteristics of a paraglider, an existing aerodynamic model was chosen to incorporate the effects of air flow around the flexible paraglider wing. During the towing phase, it is essential that the parafoil-payload system follow the line of the towing vessel path to prevent an unstable flight condition called ‘lockout’. A detailed study of the causes of lockout, its mathematical representation and the flight conditions and the parameters related to lockout, constitute another contribution of this work. A linearized model of the parafoil-payload system was developed and used to analyze the stability of the system about equilibrium conditions. The relationship between the control surface inputs and the stability was investigated. In addition to stability of flight, one more important objective of SLADS is to tow up the parafoil-payload system as fast as possible. The tension in the tow cable is directly proportional to the rate of ascent of the parafoil-payload system. Lockout instability is more favorable when tow tensions are large. Thus there is a tradeoff between susceptibility to lockout and rapid deployment. Control strategies were also developed for optimal tow up and to maintain stability in the event of disturbances.
