Mobile Cloud Computing promises to overcome the physical limitations of mobile devices by executing demanding mobile applications on cloud infrastructure. In practice, implementing this paradigm is difficult; network disconnection often occurs, bandwidth may be limited, and a large power draw is required from the battery, resulting in a poor user experience. This thesis presents a mobile cloud middleware solution, Context Aware Mobile Cloud Services (CAMCS), which provides cloudbased services to mobile devices, in a disconnected fashion. An integrated user experience is delivered by designing for anticipated network disconnection, and low data transfer requirements. CAMCS achieves this by means of the Cloud Personal Assistant (CPA); each user of CAMCS is assigned their own CPA, which can complete user-assigned tasks, received as descriptions from the mobile device, by using existing cloud services. Service execution is personalised to the user's situation with contextual data, and task execution results are stored with the CPA until the user can connect with his/her mobile device to obtain the results. Requirements for an integrated user experience are outlined, along with the design and implementation of CAMCS. The operation of CAMCS and CPAs with cloud-based services is presented, specifically in terms of service description, discovery, and task execution. The use of contextual awareness to personalise service discovery and service consumption to the user's situation is also presented. Resource management by CAMCS is also studied, and compared with existing solutions. Additional application models that can be provided by CAMCS are also presented. Evaluation is performed with CAMCS deployed on the Amazon EC2 cloud. The resource usage of the CAMCS Client, running on Android-based mobile devices, is also evaluated. A user study with volunteers using CAMCS on their own mobile devices is also presented. Results show that CAMCS meets the requirements outlined for an integrated user experience.

Cloud computing realizes the long-held dream of converting computing capability into a type of utility. It has the potential to fundamentally change the landscape of the IT industry and our way of life. However, as cloud computing expanding substantially in both scale and scope, ensuring its sustainable growth is a critical problem. Service providers have long been suffering from high operational costs. Especially the costs associated with the skyrocketing power consumption of large data centers. In the meantime, while efficient power/energy utilization is indispensable for the sustainable growth of cloud computing, service providers must also satisfy a user's quality of service (QoS) requirements. This problem becomes even more challenging considering the increasingly stringent power/energy and QoS constraints, as well as other factors such as the highly dynamic, heterogeneous, and distributed nature of the computing infrastructures, etc. In this dissertation, we study the problem of delay-sensitive cloud service scheduling for the sustainable development of cloud computing. We first focus our research on the development of scheduling methods for delay-sensitive cloud services on a single server with the goal of maximizing a service provider's profit. We then extend our study to scheduling cloud services in distributed environments. In particular, we develop a queue-based model and derive efficient request dispatching and processing decisions in a multi-electricity-market environment to improve the profits for service providers. We next study a problem of multi-tier service scheduling. By carefully assigning sub deadlines to the service tiers, our approach can significantly improve resource usage efficiencies with statistically guaranteed QoS. Finally, we study the power conscious resource provision problem for service requests with different QoS requirements. By properly sharing computing resources among different requests, our method statistically guarantees all QoS requirements with a minimized number of powered-on servers and thus the power consumptions. The significance of our research is that it is one part of the integrated effort from both industry and academia to ensure the sustainable growth of cloud computing as it continues to evolve and change our society profoundly.

Nowadays, data centers are large energy consumers and the trend for next years is expected to increase further, considering the growth in the order of cloud services. A large portion of this power consumption is due to the control of physical parameters of the data center (such as temperature and humidity). However, these physical parameters are tightly coupled with computations, and even more so in upcoming data centers, where the location of workloads can vary substantially due, for example, to workloads being moved in the cloud infrastructure hosted in the data center. Therefore, managing the physical and compute infrastructure of a large data center is an embodiment of a Cyber-Physical System (CPS). In this paper, we describe a data collection and distribution architecture that enables gathering physical parameters of a large data center at a very high temporal and spatial resolution of the sensor measurements. We think this is an important characteristic to enable more accurate heat-flow models of the data center and with them, find opportunities to optimize energy consumptions. Having a high-resolution picture of the data center conditions, also enables minimizing local hot-spots, perform more accurate predictive maintenance (failures in all infrastructure equipments can be more promptly detected) and more accurate billing. We detail this architecture and define the structure of the underlying messaging system that is used to collect and distribute the data. Finally, we show the results of a preliminary study of a typical data center radio environment.

Nos dias de hoje, com a evolução da tecnologia, mais propriamente com a expansão da acessibilidade à internet, os serviços online estão disponíveis em todo o lado e em várias plataformas (telemóvel, tablet, computador, televisão). Contudo as empresas e marcas têm dificuldade em manter os utilizadores/consumidores cativados e leais aos seus serviços online. Estes serviços, são claramente o futuro de todo o conteúdo que consumimos e o futuro de todos os serviços que usamos. Com tanta diversidade é necessário criar alguma forma de levar os utilizadores a querer voltar à marca uma e outra vez, de forma contínua. Foi assim, que surgiu a plataforma Kaptivate. O Kaptivate é composto por uma série de cloud services numa única plataforma de fácil integração, para os proprietários dos serviços online, com o objectivo de maximizar o envolvimento do consumidor. Para tal, é utilizado o conceito gamification, que pela sua definição, consiste na transferência de elementos de videojogos para outros contextos de forma a aumentar o envolvimento dos utilizadores. Na última década, gamification e o desenho centrado em incentivos têm sido temas bastante abordados e mais recentemente, estas técnicas começaram a ser aplicadas em diferentes áreas. A plataforma Kaptivate usa essas mecânicas e pensamentos orientados a jogos para o seu objecto, de cativar os utilizadores. Para apelar melhor e mais facilmente ao público actual, o Kaptivate incorpora também mecanismos sociais e tecnológicos da rede social Facebook. As redes sociais persuadem diariamente milhões de utilizadores a adotarem rotinas específicas, por isso, é de prever que o Kaptivate se torne numa ferramenta acessível, apelativa, familiar, persuasiva e tal como pretendido, cativadora. O propósito desta dissertação passa por apresentar o Kaptivate e mostrar uma prova conceito desta plataforma, com um caso criado para esse propósito e mencionar o caso de aplicação real.

Cloud computing has been one of the most important topics in Information Technology which aims to assure scalable and reliable on-demand services over the Internet. The expansion of the application scope of cloud services would require cooperation between clouds from different providers that have heterogeneous functionalities. This collaboration between different cloud vendors can provide better Quality of Services (QoS) at the lower price. However, current cloud systems have been developed without concerns of seamless cloud interconnection, and actually they do not support intercloud interoperability to enable collaboration between cloud service providers. Hence, the PhD work is motivated to address interoperability issue between cloud providers as a challenging research objective. This thesis proposes a new framework which supports inter-cloud interoperability in a heterogeneous computing resource cloud environment with the goal of dispatching the workload to the most effective clouds available at runtime. Analysing different methodologies that have been applied to resolve various problem scenarios related to interoperability lead us to exploit Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) methods as appropriate approaches for our inter-cloud framework. Moreover, since distributing the operations in a cloud-based environment is a nondeterministic polynomial time (NP-complete) problem, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based job scheduler proposed as a part of interoperability framework, offering workload migration with the best performance at the least cost. A new Agent Based Simulation (ABS) approach is proposed to model the inter-cloud environment with three types of agents: Cloud Subscriber agent, Cloud Provider agent, and Job agent. The ABS model is proposed to evaluate the proposed framework.

With the recent technological development, we have been witnessing a progressive loss of control over our personal information. Whether it is the speed in which it spreads over the internet or the permanent storage of information on cloud services, the means by which our personal information escapes our control are vast. Inevitably, this situation allowed serious violations of personal rights. The necessity to reform the European policy for protection of personal information is emerging, in order to adapt to the technological era we live in. Granting individuals the ability to delete their personal information, mainly the information which is available on the Internet, is the best solution for those whose rights have been violated. However, once supposedly deleted from the website the information is still shown in search engines. In this context, “the right to be forgotten in the internet” is invoked. Its implementation will result in the possibility for any person to delete and stop its personal information from being spread through the internet in any way, especially through search engines directories. This way we will have a more comprehensive control over our personal information in two ways: firstly, by allowing individuals to completely delete their information from any website and cloud service and secondly by limiting access of search engines to the information. This way, it could be said that a new and catchier term has been found for an “old” right.

L'objectiu del projecte és donar una alternativa específicament dissenyada per gestionar trobades d'esports col·lectius, creant una aplicació amb tecnologia Android que tingui una doble funció: • Gestionar l'organització d'aquestes trobades per part d'un usuari que farà d'administrador, podent donar d'alta diversos grups d'usuaris i trobades associades per a cadascun dels grups. • Consultar els grups per als que cada usuari està inclòs, consultar la informació referent als usuaris i trobades de cadascun d'aquests grups i poder respondre a les interaccions que proposi l'adminstrador del grup. • Desenvolupar tot el projecte amb eines de codi obert. Quant a l'àmbit personal, l'objectiu és fer una introducció en el món de les aplicacions per a mòbils, concretament en la tecnologia Android i també en l'ús de serveis d'emmagatzemament de dades al núvol (Cloud Services), en aquest cas de la plataforma Appcelerator.

Työn tavoite on ollut tutkia ja rakentaa pilvipalvelun identiteetin- ja pääsynhallinta liiketoimintapalveluksi yrityksille ja organisaatioille. Lähtökohtana on ollut valmiiden identiteetinhallintaohjelmistotuotteiden käyttäminen kehitettävän palvelutuotteen osana. Työssä on ollut tarkoitus selvittää, voiko identiteetinhallintaa ja pääsynhallintaa tuottaa ja tarjota pilvipalveluna kannattavasti. Tutkimusote on ollut konstruktiivinen ja triangulaatiossa on käytetty useaa menetelmää, jotta on saatu selvä kuva liiketoiminnan luonteesta ja tarpeista. Menetelmiä ovat olleet kyselytutkimus ja peste-analyysi. Lisäksi on tehty liiketoimintasuunnitelma ja palveluliiketoiminnan kuvaus Orsterwalderin canvas- menetelmällä. Jokainen tutkimusosa on ollut oleellinen määritettäessä palvelutuotteen ominaisuuksia, koska tavoite on ollut saada mahdollisimman luotettava ja helppokäyttöinen tuote nopeasti kasvaville pilvipalvelumarkkinoille. Tutkimuksen tuloksena on määritelty malli palveluliiketoiminnan tarpeisiin sopivasta turvallisesta palvelualustasta, joka skaalautuu hyvin pilvipalveluiden käytön lisääntyessä voimakkaasti. Liiketoimintasuunnitelman laskelmien avulla on löydetty käyttäjämäärien alarajat kannattavaan liiketoimintaan. Lisäksi on huomattu palvelun rakenteen auttavan yrityksiä ja organisaatiota suojaamaan pilvipalveluiden käyttäjätunnukset ja salasanat väärinkäytöksiltä, mikä on tarpeellista ja ajankohtaista kaikille organisaatioille, jotka harkitsevat pilvipalveluiden käyttöä ja haluavat tehdä sen tietoturvallisesti. Tutkimuksen tuloksena on pystytty määrittelemään, onko liiketoiminta kannattavaa vai ei sekä palvelun tarvitsemat liiketoimintaelementit.

Työn tarkoituksena on selvittää, mitä valmiita ohjelmistoja tarjoavat pilvipalvelut lupaavat tietoturvastaan. Työssä tutustutaan eri pilvipalveluiden palveluehtoihin ja keskitytään analysoimaan palvelun tietoturvaa ja yksityisyyden suojaa näiden ehtojen mukaisesti. Tuloksena saadaan katsaus pilvipalveluiden tietoturvaan ja voidaan samalla päätellä, kuinka palvelut vastaavat pilven ominaisiin tietoturvauhkiin.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on tutkia, miten sähköisen taloushallinnon kehitys on vaikuttanut tilintarkastukseen ja miten se näkyy ammattilehtien kirjoittelussa vuosina 2003-2013. Alatavoitteina tutkitaan, mitä sähköisen taloushallinnon kehityksen tuomia hyötyjä ja haasteita on havaittu tarkastellussa suomalaisessa sekä kansainvälisessä ammattilehtikirjoittelussa tilintarkastuksen näkökulmasta. Kyseessä on laadullinen tutkimus ja tutkimusmetodologiana käytetään sisällönanalyysia. Tietokoneavusteisten tilintarkastuksen tekniikoiden kehityksen seurauksena tekniikoita voidaan kehittää kohti jatkuvaa tilintarkastusta. Kannettavien tietokoneiden ja pilvipalveluiden seurauksena tilintarkastuksesta on tullut enemmän ajasta ja paikasta riippumatonta. XBRL:n avulla tietojen vertailtavuus, luotettavuus ja tarkkuus ovat parantuneet. Haasteina voidaan nähdä tilintarkastajien IT-taitojen kehittämisen tarve sekä asiakkaan ja tilintarkastusyhteisön tietojärjestelmien yhteensopivuus. Hyvätkin ohjelmistot voivat altistaa väärinkäytöksille, jolloin tarvitaan uusia innovatiivisia tekniikoita väärinkäytösten havaitsemiseen. Tutkielman empiirisen osion luotettavuus perustuu ammattilehtien artikkeleiden kirjoittajien näkökulmiin. Tilintarkastusalan kehittyminen tulevaisuudessa on kiinni kehittyvän tekniikan lisäksi asenteista.

Diplomityössä tutkittiin Microsoftin pilvipalveluiden käyttöä pk-yrityksen päätelaitteiden hallinnassa sekä yrityksen tiedonhallinnassa. Kohdeyrityksenä oli pk-yritys, jolla on ollut Microsoftin pilvipalveluita käytössä jo useamman vuoden ajan. Pilvipalveluiden nopean päivitystahdin myötä uusimpien ominaisuuksien hyödyntäminen on suurelta osin jäänyt tekemättä. Tutkimus päädyttiin rajaamaan kohdeyrityksessä tehdyn vaatimusmäärittelyn mukaisiin tapauksiin, joihin pyrittiin etsimään vastauksia Microsoftin pilvipalveluiden tämän hetken ominaisuuksien avulla. Tutkimus toteutettiin tutustumalla kirjallisuuden avulla pilvitoimintamallin perusteisiin ja Microsoftin tarjoamiin pilvipalveluihin. Työn käytännön osuus toteutettiin useilla eri päätelaitteilla Office 365:den ja Windows Intunen muodostamassa testiympäristössä, jota laajennettiin Microsoft Azuren mahdollistamilla lisäominaisuuksilla. Pilvitoimintamallin yritykset taistelevat jatkuvasti käyttäjien luottamuksesta ja NSA:n vakoilutapauksen jälkeen palveluissa on tapahtunut paljon parannuksia. Tutkimuksessa todettiin erityisesti tiedon suojaamiskäytäntöjen ja hallintaominaisuuksien kehittyneen viime vuosina pilvitoimintamallin yritysten keskinäisen kilpailun myötä. Microsoftin pilvipalvelujen uudet ominaisuudet tarjoavat pk-yritysten käyttöön tehokkaita päätelaite- ja tiedonhallintaratkaisuja, joita on tähän asti ollut saatavilla vain suuryritysympäristöissä.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, millä tavoin viestintäteknologian kehitys, globalisaatio sekä organisaatiomuodot ovat suhteessa keskenään sekä miten ne vaikuttavat esimiestyöhön hajautuneessa organisaatiossa. Tutkimuskohteena olivat kymmenen eri asiantuntijaorganisaatiossa esimiesasemassa työskentelevää henkilöä. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisin tutkimusmenetelmin. Tutkimusaineisto hankittiin puolistrukturoitujen teemahaastattelujen sekä avoimien haastatteluiden avulla. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys rakennettiin hajautuneen organisaation määrittelyn ohella johtamisteorioista sekä organisaation viestinnän teorioista. Tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella hajautuneet organisaatiomuodot yleistyvät uusille toimialoille ja työaika ja –paikka käsitteet muuttuvat. Esimiestyö on sosiaalinen prosessi. Vuorovaikutteinen ja päätösvaltaa jakava esimiestyö on tehokkaan ja joustavan organisaation edellytys. Verkostoituminen on yleistynyt ja on organisaatioiden kannalta järkevämpi tapa saada tarvittava osaaminen käyttöön kuin rekrytoiminen. Tutkimuksen mukaan organisaatiot pyrkivät edesauttamaan verkostoitumista mahdollistamalla työajasta ja –paikasta riippumattoman työn tekemisen. Useimmat organisatioissa käyettävät sovellukset ja järjestelmät toimivat tietoliikenneverkon kautta tai pilvipalveluissa. Työntekijöitä kannustetaan voimakkaasti muodostamaan sekä löytämään omaa ja organisaation osaamista tukevia osaamiskeskuksia. Lisäksi tutkimus vahvistaa aiempien tutkimustulosten mukaisesti, että nykymuotoinen esimiestyö ei toimi työaikaja työpaikkarajoituksista vapautuneessa, hajautuneissa organisaatioissa. Tämän vaikutuksesta myös alaisten rooli muuttuu hajautuneissa organisaatioissa.

Leveraging cloud services, companies and organizations can significantly improve their efficiency, as well as building novel business opportunities. Cloud computing offers various advantages to companies while having some risks for them too. Advantages offered by service providers are mostly about efficiency and reliability while risks of cloud computing are mostly about security problems. Problems with security of the cloud still demand significant attention in order to tackle the potential problems. Security problems in the cloud as security problems in any area of computing, can not be fully tackled. However creating novel and new solutions can be used by service providers to mitigate the potential threats to a large extent. Looking at the security problem from a very high perspective, there are two focus directions. Security problems that threaten service user’s security and privacy are at one side. On the other hand, security problems that threaten service provider’s security and privacy are on the other side. Both kinds of threats should mostly be detected and mitigated by service providers. Looking a bit closer to the problem, mitigating security problems that target providers can protect both service provider and the user. However, the focus of research community mostly is to provide solutions to protect cloud users. A significant research effort has been put in protecting cloud tenants against external attacks. However, attacks that are originated from elastic, on-demand and legitimate cloud resources should still be considered seriously. The cloud-based botnet or botcloud is one of the prevalent cases of cloud resource misuses. Unfortunately, some of the cloud’s essential characteristics enable criminals to form reliable and low cost botclouds in a short time. In this paper, we present a system that helps to detect distributed infected Virtual Machines (VMs) acting as elements of botclouds. Based on a set of botnet related system level symptoms, our system groups VMs. Grouping VMs helps to separate infected VMs from others and narrows down the target group under inspection. Our system takes advantages of Virtual Machine Introspection (VMI) and data mining techniques.
