Abstract Bakgrund: Totalt har nästan 30 miljoner avlidit sedan första AIDS- fallet diagnostiserades år 1981. Ovissheten och hotet om sjukdom och för tidig död innebär stora psykiska påfrestningar på individen. Sjuksköterskans attityder och sätt att vara spelar en viktig roll för etablering av en terapeutisk relation. Syfte: Syftet var att belysa sjuksköterskans attityder till patienter med HIV- infektion. Metod: Genom en litteraturstudie av tidigare forskning har 16 vetenskapliga artiklar granskats. Dessa fann vi på databaserna PubMed och Cinahl. Resultat: Sjuksköterskor upplevde rädsla vid omvårdnad av patienter med HIV/AIDS på grund av dess smittrisk. De ansåg att de behövde mer utbildning och support och professionell support mellan kollegor för att orka med sitt arbete. Från forskarnas observationer sågs ett fysiskt undvikande av patienter, som att vårdpersonalen inte svarade på patientens ringningar, de undvek att gå in till patienten. Sjuksköterskestuderande som hade en rädsla för HIV/AIDS har mer homofobier, de ansåg att det var ett straff för deras oordnade sexliv och att de förtjänade sitt öde. Slutsats: Vi anser att många av dessa attityder skulle kunna undvikas om personalen får mer kunskap om smitta, sexuallitet och droger, hur sjukdomsförloppet ser ut, och vilka funderingar en HIV/AIDS smittad kan ha. Detta skulle bidra till att sjuksköterskor/vårdpersonal vågar möta patienten och utveckla en god relation till denne.

Den här artikeln är en del av ett projekt som studerar förändringar i förskollärarprofessionen i den svenska förskolan. Projektet tar avstamp i kravet på lärarna att arbeta med att dokumentera förskolans kvalitetsarbete. De övergripande frågor som ställs handlar om hur förskollärarna i relation till arbetet med dokumentation visar upp sin verksamhet och i samband med detta vilka delar som visas upp och vilka delar som tystas och osynliggörs.   Som en del av projektet studerar vi särskilt innebörder i begreppet omsorg i relation till dokumentationsarbetet. Tidigare studier inom projektet visar att omsorg är ett otydligt begrepp i dokument om förskolans verksamhet. Den här artikelns empiriska material består av observationer från personalmöten på förskolan samt intervjuer med förskolechefer och förskollärare när de diskuterar arbetet med att dokumentera kvalitetsarbetet i förskolan. Specifika analytiska redskap har hämtats dels från utbildningspolitiska teorier samt från teorier om lärarprofessionalism där mjuka värden som omsorg och närhet lyfts fram som viktiga kännetecken i förskollärares profession.   Resultaten visar att förskollärare och deras chefer inte talar om omsorg i särskilt stor utsträckning och när begreppet nämns så framhålls svårigheter med att beskriva och dokumentera innebörder av omsorg. För att hantera dessa svårigheter utvecklas skilda professionella strategier som handlar om att fly undan utmaningarna på olika vis och att omsorg som begrepp i förskolans verksamhet ges nya innebörder i termer av lärande och kunskap.

Miniaturization of analytical instrumentation is attracting growing interest in response to the explosive demand for rapid, yet sensitive analytical methods and low-cost, highly automated instruments for pharmaceutical and bioanalyses and environmental monitoring. Microfabrication technology in particular, has enabled fabrication of low-cost microdevices with a high degree of integrated functions, such as sample preparation, chemical reaction, separation, and detection, on a single microchip. These miniaturized total chemical analysis systems (microTAS or lab-on-a-chip) can also be arrayed for parallel analyses in order to accelerate the sample throughput. Other motivations include reduced sample consumption and waste production as well as increased speed of analysis. One of the most promising hyphenated techniques in analytical chemistry is the combination of a microfluidic separation chip and mass spectrometer (MS). In this work, the emerging polymer microfabrication techniques, ultraviolet lithography in particular, were exploited to develop a capillary electrophoresis (CE) separation chip which incorporates a monolithically integrated electrospray ionization (ESI) emitter for efficient coupling with MS. An epoxy photoresist SU-8 was adopted as structural material and characterized with respect to its physicochemical properties relevant to chip-based CE and ESI/MS, namely surface charge, surface interactions, heat transfer, and solvent compatibility. As a result, SU-8 was found to be a favorable material to substitute for the more commonly used glass and silicon in microfluidic applications. In addition, an infrared (IR) thermography was introduced as direct, non-intrusive method to examine the heat transfer and thermal gradients during microchip-CE. The IR data was validated through numerical modeling. The analytical performance of SU-8-based microchips was established for qualitative and quantitative CE-ESI/MS analysis of small drug compounds, peptides, and proteins. The CE separation efficiency was found to be similar to that of commercial glass microchips and conventional CE systems. Typical analysis times were only 30-90 s per sample indicating feasibility for high-throughput analysis. Moreover, a mass detection limit at the low-attomole level, as low as 10E+5 molecules, was achieved utilizing MS detection. The SU-8 microchips developed in this work could also be mass produced at low cost and with nearly identical performance from chip to chip. Until this work, the attempts to combine CE separation with ESI in a chip-based system, amenable to batch fabrication and capable of high, reproducible analytical performance, have not been successful. Thus, the CE-ESI chip developed in this work is a substantial step toward lab-on-a-chip technology.

Pro gradu -tutkielman aiheena on kirjeenvaihtajan työprosessi. Tutkielma kuuluu kääntämisen sosiologian piiriin. Tutkimuksen kohteena oli Helsingin Sanomien Pariisin-kirjeenvaihtaja Minna Nalbantoglu, jonka työskentelyä tutkielman tekijä havainnoi Pariisissa viiden päivän ajan syyskuussa 2006. Tutkimuksen päämetodina oli tapaustutkimus, jonka lisäksi tutkimuksessa käytettiin metodina haastattelua ja havainnointia sekä dokumenttien, tallenteiden ja työnäytteiden analysointia. Tutkimuksen aineisto muodostui havaintomuistiinpanoista, kirjeenvaihtajan haastattelusta, ääneenajatteluprotokollista, haastattelunauhoista, kirjeenvaihtajan tuottamista artikkeleista, kirjeenvaihtajan käyttämistä lähteistä ja juttupäiväkirjoista. Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli muodostaa kokonaiskuva kirjeenvaihtajan työprosessista. Tavoitteena oli vastata seuraavin kysymyksiin: 1) Miten ja millä kriteereillä kirjeenvaihtaja valitsee Helsingin Sanomien lukijoille välitettävät uutiset? 2) Miten uutinen tuotetaan? 3) Minkälaista kääntämistä tai käännöseditointia (transediting) kirjeenvaihtajan työssä esiintyy? Tutkimustulokset on analysoitu viiden käsitteen avulla, jotka ovat uutiskriteerit, uutisen tuottamisprosessi, kääntäminen, käännöseditointi ja portinvartiointi (gatekeeping). Ensimmäiseen tutkimuskysymykseen vastattiin analysoimalla kirjeenvaihtajan tutkimusviikon aikana tuottamia artikkeleita Johan Galtungin ja Mari Holmboe Rugen (1965) klassisten uutiskriteerien avulla, joita täydennettiin Judy McGregorin (2002) päivitetyillä uutiskriteereillä. Toiseen tutkimuskysymykseen vastattiin kuvailemalla uutisten tuottamisprosessia. Samalla selvitettiin, mitä lähteitä kirjeenvaihtaja oli käyttänyt jutuissansa. Kolmatta tutkimuskysymystä varten artikkelit analysoitiin Teun A. van Dijkin (1988) uutisen tuottamisprosessin tutkimista varten kehittämällä mallilla. Van Dijkin mallin avulla määriteltiin, mikä tekstinkäsittelystrategia on kääntämistä ja mitkä käännöseditointia. Analyysin perusteella todettiin, että tekstin tuottamisprosessissa esiintyy myös uuden tekstin luomista ja tuotantoa yksikielisen materiaalin pohjalta. Kääntäminen ja käännöseditointi (Karen Stetting 1989) -käsitteitä pohdittiin ennen analyysia työn teoriaosuudessa. Uutisaiheiden analyysin perusteella todettiin, että mitä enemmän tapahtuma täyttää uutiskriteereitä, sitä todennäköisemmin se valitaan uutiseksi. Niin ikään mitä enemmän tapahtuma täyttää McGregorin päivittämiä uutiskriteereitä, sitä todennäköisemmin se valitaan uutiseksi. Analysoitujen uutisten määrä oli kuitenkin pieni, eikä tuloksia voida pitää kuin suuntaa-antavina. Artikkeleiden lähteenä oli käytetty lähinnä haastatteluita, lehtiartikkeleita ja uutistoimistojen sähkeitä. Muiden lähteiden käyttö oli satunnaista. Lähteiden ja käännösstrategioiden välillä ei havaittu korrelaatiota. Eniten käytetty tekstinkäsittelystrategia oli tiivistäminen. Käännöseditoinnin osuus oli yli puolet artikkeleiden tekstistä (keskiarvo 62 %) ja kääntämisen osuus vain kahdeksan prosenttia. Tutkimuksen perusteella käännöseditointi-käsitteen käyttö on perusteltua puhuttaessa kyseisen kirjeenvaihtajan työstä. Tutkimuksen perusteella on kehitetty uusi portinvartiointimalli, joka pohjautuu van Dijkin uutisen tuottamisprosessimalliin. Mallin avulla voidaan analysoida uutisen tuottamisprosessia ja päätellä, minkä verran kääntämistä ja käännöseditointia työssä esiintyy. Mallia ehdotetaan sovellettavaksi paitsi muiden kirjeenvaihtajien niin myös monikielisen materiaalin parissa työskentelevien toimittajien työn sekä uutiskääntämisen analysointiin.

Tämän maisterintutkielman tutkimusalueena on liettuan kielioppi. Liettua on yksi vanhakantaisimmista yhä puhuttavista indoeurooppalaisista kielistä, joiden balttilaiseen ryhmään kuuluu sen ohella enää ainoastaan latvia. Liettuan kieli on Suomessa varsin tuntematon, vaikka valtaosa sen puhujista asuu täältä verrattain lyhyen matkan päässä. Siitä ei tätä kirjoitettaessa ole ilmestynyt suomen kielellä juuri muuta oppimateriaalia kuin yksi suppeahko asiointisanasto ja pieni sanakirja. Mitään varsinaista oppikirjaa tai kielioppia ei ole kirjoitettu. Tämän työn yhtenä tarkoituksena onkin siten paikata kielen melkoista suomeksi painetun oppimateriaalin puutetta. Työn varsinaiseksi tutkimuskohteeksi on otettu osa suomen ja liettuan kielten verbijärjestelmästä – nominaalimuodot ja niiden käyttö. Nominaalimuodoilla tarkoitetaan ei-finiittisiä verbimuotoja, jotka eivät voi yksinään esiintyä lauseen predikaattina ja joita käytetään nimensä mukaisesti nominien tavoin. Työssä luodaan ensinnä verrattain laaja katsaus suomen kielen infinitiiveihin ja partisiippeihin, minkä jälkeen siirrytään perusteellisesti tarkastelemaan liettuan kielen tärkeimpiä nominaalimuotoja: infinitiiviä, partisiippia, puolipartisiippia, adverbiaalipartisiippia ja supiinia. Tarkastelun pääpaino kohdistuu partisiippeihin. Yhtenä työn tavoitteista on esitellä, mitä eri nominaalimuotoja kielissä esiintyy, miten ne muodostetaan ja mihin tarkoituksiin niitä käytetään. Tämän lisäksi työhön sisältyy vertaileva näkökulma: siinä halutaan selvittää, millaisia tärkeimpiä yhtäläisyyksiä ja eroja kielten nominaalimuotojen välillä esiintyy. Käytetty lähestymistapa on siten kontrastiivinen eli kielten synkroniseen vertailuun perustuva. Kielten nominaalimuotojen välisten erojen ja yhteisten piirteiden valaisemiseksi työhön on sisällytetty molemmilla kielillä runsaasti esimerkkejä ja muotojen muodostamissääntöjä kuvaavia taulukoita. Suomen kielen osalta työn tärkeimpinä lähteinä ovat Nykysuomen käsikirja ja Iso suomen kielioppi. Liettuan verbimuotoja kuvaavat taulukot ja lisäksi monet esimerkkilauseista perustuvat puolestaan Liettuan kielen instituutin julkaisemaan teokseen Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos gramatika. Työn loppuosassa on laajahko liettuankielinen tiivistelmä, joka tekee työstä käyttökelpoisen myös liettuaa äidinkielenään puhuvalle, suomen kielestä kiinnostuneelle henkilölle. Tehtyjen vertailujen tärkeimpinä johtopäätöksinä voidaan todeta, että suomen kielen nominaalimuodoista infinitiivien käyttöalue on liettuan infinitiivin sovellusaluetta laajempi. Erityisesti suomen toisen ja kolmannen infinitiivimuodon eri käyttötarkoituksia kohti löytyy liettuan kielestä useita eri nominaalimuotoja. Sen sijaan suomen I ja II partisiippi sekä liettuan partisiippi ovat verrattain usein käyttötavoiltaan toisiaan muistuttavia. DRAMATURGY OF THEATRE MANAGEMENT Essential tasks, everyday problems and the need for structural changes Theatre justifies its existence only through high quality performances. Maintaining the artistic level and organizing performances are the primary tasks of a manager, even though in everyday life this often seems to be overshadowed by all the other tasks of a manager s work. How does a theatre manager design strategies and make everyday decisions if aims are to have artistically meaningful performances, financial success and a socially healthy ensemble, when not only artistic work or leadership of an organization are to be taken into consideration, but also a manpower-based art institution with long traditions? What does theatre management consist of and what kind of dramaturgical movement happens in it? Based on interviews carried out in five different city theatres in Finland in the years 2004-2008, incident stories were written within a continuous comparison theory frame. Social constructionism within a dramaturgic framework enabled versatile dialog on a manager s work and problem areas. The result is an interpretative study, where instead of common regularities, many details are collected that can be taken into consideration when similar situations occur. Based on the interviews and historical data, four factors that influence a manager s work were chosen: ownership, media, work community and programme. Within theatre management, the central problems were 1) the inconsistent use of theatre resources and problems in corporate governance caused by the administrative models; 2) the theatre s image, based on the image of its manager, as presented by the media and its influence on the wellbeing of the staff; 3) unsolved problems between the staff left behind by the previous managers and problems related to casting; 4) knowledge of the audience. These points influence how the manager plans the artistic programme and divides the resources. The theatre manager s job description has remained quite the same since the early days of Kaarlo Bergbom. In the future, special attention should be placed on why managers face fairly similar problems decade after decade. Reducing these problems partly depends on whether structural improvements are made to a theatre s close network of owners, financers and labour unions. During this study clear evidence was seen that structural changes are necessary in the production of performances and in the creation of a more versatile programme. In this process, different kinds of co-operation, experiments, development projects, continuing education and international relations have special importance, especially if the aim is to make it possible for all citizens of Finland to enjoy a vibrant and revitalized theatre.

The Gesture of Exposure On the presentation of the work of art in the modern art exhibition The topic of this dissertation is the presentation of art works in the modern art exhibition as being the established and conventionalized form of art encounter. It investigates the possibility of a theorization of the art exhibition as a separate object for research, and attempts to examine the relationship between the art work and its presentation in a modern art exhibition. The study takes its point of departure in the area vaguely defined as exhibition studies, and in the lack of a general problematization of the analytical tools used for closer examination of the modern art exhibition. Another lacking aspect is a closer consideration of what happens to the work of art when it is exposed in an art exhibition. The aim of the dissertation is to find a set of concepts that can be used for further theorization The art exhibition is here treated, on the one hand, as an act of exposure, as a showing gesture. On the other hand, the art exhibition is seen as a spatiality, as a space that is produced in the act of showing. Both aspects are seen to be intimately involved in knowledge production. The dissertation is divided into four parts, in which different aspects of the art exhibition are analyzed using different theoretical approaches. The first part uses the archaeological model of Michel Foucault, and discusses the exhibition as a discursive formation based on communicative activity. The second part analyses the derived concepts of gesture and space. This leads to the proposition of three metaphorical spatialities the frame, the agora and the threshold which are seen as providing a possibility for a further extension of the theory of exhibitions. The third part extends the problematization of the relationship between the individual work of art and its exposure through the ideas of Walter Benjamin and Maurice Blanchot. The fourth part carries out a close reading of three presentations from the modern era in order to further examine the relationship between the work of art and its presentation, using the tools that have been developed during the study. In the concluding section, it is possible to see clearer borderlines and conditions for the development of an exhibition theory. The concepts that have been analysed and developed into tools are shown to be useful, and the examples take the discussion into a consideration of the altered premises for the encounter with the postmodern work of art.

The study analyses the prevention or endorsing of the crime of infanticide in Finland 1702 1807, rather than the result. Also the impacts of the female body, biology of childbirth and experiences of pregnancy are examined, together with insights from modern medical research. Circumstances are reconstructed by a critical reading of judicial records on all levels of the judicial system. In all 269 cases of infanticide and 142 accessory crimes within the jurisdiction of the Turku court of appeal are studied, with particular focus on exceptionally well recorded cases of 83 accused women and 41 women and men accused of being party to the crime. Secondary sources are medical and jurisprudential writings, the public debate on infanticide, broadsheets and letters asking the King for pardon. Infanticide was considered murder by law. Unmarried women were predetermined as the main culprits. Nevertheless, deliberate infanticides were rare and committed mostly in accomplice. The majority of the infanticides studied were cases where inexperienced and unmarried women accidentally had given birth alone and usually to a dead child. Unaware that the pain they were experiencing was in fact a labour, the accused women instinctively sought solitude to push out the child. Some misunderstood the birth as an urgent need to defecate. The unexpected delivery ended in hiding the baby without remorse. This crime was promoted by several factors in Finnish rural culture, amongst others that also married women hid their pregnancy. The immediate household members did not necessarily know about the childbirth and failed to help the woman. This typical pattern in most cases of infanticide in 18th century Finland is also recorded in modern cases of unknown pregnancies. Fear of accountability prevented witnesses testifying to the actual course of events. The truth remained elusive. With only a few exceptions, the women were sentenced to death or imprisonment. The majority of those accused of accomplice were acquitted. However, too harsh sentences for accidents affected the reporting of the crime. Criminal politics failed to curtail infanticide as the crime was unsatisfactorily addressed by law, society and the judicial system.

Luce Irigaray is a Belgian-born philosopher, psychoanalyst and linguist. Irigaray s concept of woman is crucial for understanding her own work but also for examining and developing the theoretical and methodological basis of feminist theory. This thesis argues that, ultimately, Irigaray s exploration of woman s being challenges our traditional notion of philosophy as a neutral discourse and the traditional notion of ourselves as philosophizing persons or human beings. However, despite its crucial role, Irigaray s idea of woman still lacks a comprehensive explication. This is because the discourse of sexual difference is blurred by the ideas of essentialism and biologism. --- Irigaray s concept of woman has been interpreted and criticized from the perspectives of metaphysical essentialism, strategic essentialism, realist essentialism and deconstructionism. This thesis argues that a reinterpretation is necessary to account for Irigaray s claims about the the traditional woman , mimesis, the specificity of the feminine body, feminine expression and sexual difference. Moreover, any reading should account for the differences between women and avoid giving a prescriptive function to the essence of woman. --- My thesis develops a new interpretation of Irigaray s concept of woman on the basis of the phenomenology of the body. It argues that Irigaray s discourse on woman can and must be understood by an idea of existential style. Existential style is embodied, affective and spiritual and it is constituted in relation to oneself, to others and to the world. It is temporal, it evolves and changes but preserves its open unity in its transformations. Stylistic unities, such as femininity or philosophy, are constituted in and by the singulars. -- This study discusses and analyses feminine existential style as a central theme and topic of Irigaray s works and shows how her work operates as a primary and paradigmatic example of the feminine style. These tasks are performed by studying the mimetic positions available for women and by explicating the phenomenological background of Irigaray s conceptions of the philosophical method, and the lived, expressive and affective body. The critical occupation and transformation of these mimetic positions, the inquiry into the first-person pre-discursive experience, and the cultivation of feminine expressivity open up the possibility of becoming a woman writer, a woman lover and a woman philosopher. The appearance of these new feminine figures is a precondition for the realization of sexual difference. So Irigaray opens up the possibility of sexual difference by instituting and constituting a feminine subject of love and wisdom, and by problematizing the idea of a neutral and absolute subject.

Tutkimuksen pääkysymyksenä on selvittää, millainen musiikkifestivaalien toiminnanjohtajien ammattikuva on. Asiaa tutkitaan haastattelemalla Kuhmon Kamarimusiikin, Sysmän Suvisoiton ja Tuusulanjärven Kamarimusiikin toiminnanjohtajia sekä tekemällä verkkokysely, joka lähetettiin kaikille Finland Festivals -järjestön jäsenfestivaalien käytännön järjestelyistä vastaaville, olipa heidän työnimekkeenään toiminnanjohtaja, pääsihteeri tms. Työn teoreettisessa osassa (Luku 2) esitellään aiheeseen liittyvät teoreettiset näkökulmat ja Arto Kallioniemen määrittelemät viisi ammattikuvan osa-aluetta. Tutkimuksessa näitä osa-alueita käytetään soveltamalla ne festivaalitoiminnanjohtajien työhön sopiviksi ja liittämällä niihin Timo Rädyn objektiivinen, subjektiivinen ja funktionaalinen ammattikäsitys. Luvussa 3 tutustutaan tutkimuksessa haastateltaviin toiminnanjohtajiin ja heidän johtamiinsa festivaaleihin. Luku 4 alkaa verkkokyselyn tulosten käsittelyllä ja jatkuu perehtymällä toiminnanjohtajien ammattikuvan osa-alueisiin haastattelujen pohjalta. Molempien osien lopussa on yhteenveto. Lisäksi luvun 4 lopussa yhdistetään verkkokyselyn ja haastattelujen tulokset. Viimeisessä luvussa (Luku 5) tutkimustulokset liitetään työn teoreettisiin lähtökohtiin. Verkkokyselyn mukaan keskimääräinen suomalainen musiikkifestivaalin toiminnanjohtaja on akateemisesti koulutettu, noin 45-vuotias nainen, jolla on päätoiminen työsuhde ja joka ansaitsee 2001-2500e/kk. Lisäksi verkkokyselyssä ja haastatteluissa paljastui, että nykyiset toiminnanjohtajat pitävät työhön sopivimpana koulutuksena taiteellista ja taloudellista korkeakoulukoulutusta. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin myös toiminnanjohtajien työtehtävät, ammattirooli, tietopohja, ammatilliset arvot ja käsitys festivaalijohtajuudesta. Tutkimuksessa laajennetaan musiikkitieteellistä tutkimusta yhteiskunnallisen ja organisatorisen tutkimuksen puolelle. Siinä selvitetään ensi kertaa Suomessa kattavasti, millaisia ihmisiä suomalaisten musiikkifestivaalien johdossa toimii ja tutkitaan millainen koulutus toiminnanjohtajalle parhaiten sopisi. Työstä käy myös ilmi, että musiikkifestivaalin johtaminen vertautuu läheisesti muiden taiteenalojen tapahtumien johtamiseen, mutta myös hieman laajentaen muihinkin kulttuurijohtajuuden aloihin. Samalla tutkimus hahmottelee festivaalijohtajien ammattiyhteisöä.

The thesis studies the translation process for the laws of Finland as they are translated from Finnish into Swedish. The focus is on revision practices, norms and workplace procedures. The translation process studied covers three institutions and four revisions. In three separate studies the translation process is analyzed from the perspective of the translations, the institutions and the actors. The general theoretical framework is Descriptive Translation Studies. For the analysis of revisions made in versions of the Swedish translation of Finnish laws, a model is developed covering five grammatical categories (textual revisions, syntactic revisions, lexical revisions, morphological revisions and content revisions) and four norms (legal adequacy, correct translation, correct language and readability). A separate questionnaire-based study was carried out with translators and revisers at the three institutions. The results show that the number of revisions does not decrease during the translation process, and no division of labour can be seen at the different stages. This is somewhat surprising if the revision process is regarded as one of quality control. Instead, all revisers make revisions on every level of the text. Further, the revisions do not necessarily imply errors in the translations but are often the result of revisers following different norms for legal translation. The informal structure of the institutions and its impact on communication, visibility and workplace practices was studied from the perspective of organization theory. The results show weaknesses in the communicative situation, which affect the co-operation both between institutions and individuals. Individual attitudes towards norms and their relative authority also vary, in the sense that revisers largely prioritize legal adequacy whereas translators give linguistic norms a higher value. Further, multi-professional teamwork in the institutions studied shows a kind of teamwork based on individuals and institutions doing specific tasks with only little contact with others. This shows that the established definitions of teamwork, with people co-working in close contact with each other, cannot directly be applied to the workplace procedures in the translation process studied. Three new concepts are introduced: flerstegsrevidering (multi-stage revision), revideringskedja (revision chain) and normsyn (norm attitude). The study seeks to make a contribution to our knowledge of legal translation, translation processes, institutional translation, revision practices and translation norms for legal translation. According to the models conceptualizing work stress, increased risk of health problems arise when high job demands co-occur with low job control (the demand-control model) or the efforts invested by the employee are disproportionately high compared to the rewards received (effort-reward imbalance model). This study examined the association between work stress and early atherosclerosis with particular attention to the role of pre-employment risk factors and genetic background in this association. The subjects were young healthy adults aged 24-39 who were participating in the 21-year follow-up of the ongoing prospective "Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns" study in 2001-2002. Work stress was evaluated with questionnaires on demand-control model and on effort-reward model. Atherosclerosis was assessed with ultrasound of carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT). In addition, risk for enhanced atherosclerotic process was assessed by measuring with heart rate variability and heart rate. Pre-employment risk factors, measured at age 12 to 18, included such as body mass index, blood lipids, family history of coronary heart disease, and parental socioeconomic position. Variants of the neuregulin-1 were determined using genomic DNA. The results showed that higher work stress was associated with higher IMT in men. This association was not attenuated by traditional risk factors of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease or by pre-employment risk factors measured in adolescence. Neuregulin-1 gene moderated the association between work stress and IMT in men. A significant association between work stress and IMT was found only for the T/T genotype of the neuregulin-1 gene but not for other genotypes. Among women an association was found between higher work stress and lower heart rate variability, suggesting higher risk for developing atherosclerosis. These associations could not be explained by demographic characteristics or coronary risk factors. The present findings provide evidence for an association between work stress and atherosclerosis in relatively young population. This association seems to be modified by genetic influences but it does not appear to be confounded by pre-employment adolescent risk factors.

Occupational burnout and heath Occupational burnout is assumed to be a negative consequence of chronic work stress. In this study, it was explored in the framework of occupational health psychology, which focusses on psychologically mediated processes between work and health. The objectives were to examine the overlap between burnout and ill health in relation to mental disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, and cardiovascular diseases, which are the three commonest disease groups causing work disability in Finland; to study whether burnout can be distinguished from ill health by its relation to work characteristics and work disability; and to determine the socio-demographic correlates of burnout at the population level. A nationally representative sample of the Finnish working population aged 30 to 64 years (n = 3151-3424) from the multidisciplinary epidemiological Health 2000 Study was used. Burnout was measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey. The diagnoses of common mental disorders were based on the standardized mental health interview (the Composite International Diagnostic Interview), and physical illnesses were determined in a comprehensive clinical health examination by a research physician. Medically certified sickness absences exceeding 9 work days during a 2-year period were extracted from a register of The Social Insurance Institution of Finland. Work stress was operationalized according to the job strain model. Gender, age, education, occupational status, and marital status were recorded as socio-demographic factors. Occupational burnout was related to an increased prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders and alcohol dependence among the men and women. Burnout was also related to musculoskeletal disorders among the women and cardiovascular diseases among the men independently of socio-demographic factors, physical strenuousness of work, health behaviour, and depressive symptoms. The odds of having at least one long, medically-certified sickness absence were higher for employees with burnout than for their colleagues without burnout. For severe burnout, this association was independent of co-occurring common mental disorders and physical illnesses for both genders, as was also the case for mild burnout among the women. In a subgroup of the men with absences, severe burnout was related to a greater number of absence days than among the women with absences. High job strain was associated with a higher occurrence of burnout and depressive disorders than low job strain was. Of these, the association between job strain and burnout was stronger, and it persisted after control for socio-demographic factors, health behaviour, physical illnesses, and various indicators of mental health. In contrast, job strain was not related to depressive disorders after burnout was accounted for. Among the working population over 30 years of age, burnout was positively associated with age. There was also a tendency towards higher levels of burnout among the women with low educational attainment and occupational status and among the unmarried men. In conclusion, a considerable overlap was found between burnout, mental disorders, and physical illnesses. Still, burnout did not seem to be totally redundant with respect to ill health. Burnout may be more strongly related to stressful work characteristics than depressive disorders are. In addition, burnout seems to be an independent risk factor for work disability, and it could possibly be used as a marker of health-impairing work stress. However, burnout may represent a different kind of risk factor for men and women, and this possibility needs to be taken into account in the promotion of occupational health.
