Surface structures of Pt-Sn and Pt-Fe bimetallic catalysts have been investigated by means of Mossbauer spectroscopy, Pt-L-III -edge EXAFS and H-2-adsorption. The results showed that the second component, such as Sn or Fe, remained in the oxidative state and dispersed on the gamma-Al2O3 surface after reduction, while Pt was completely reduced to the metallic state and dispersed on either the metal oxide surface or the gamma-Al2O3 surface. By correlating the distribution of Pt species on different surfaces with the reaction and adsorption performances, it is proposed that two kinds of active Pt species existed on the surfaces of both catalysts, named M-1 sites and M-2 sites. M-1 sites are the sites in which Pr directly anchored on the gamma-Al2O3 surface, while M-2 sites are those in which Pt anchored on the metal oxide surface. M-1 sites are favorable for low temperature H-2 adsorption, and responsible for the hydrogenolysis reaction and carbon deposition, while M-2 sites which adsorb more H-2 at higher temperature, are more resistant to the deactivation due to less carbon deposition, and provide major contribution to the dehydrogenation reaction.

The International Roadmap for Ferroelectric Memories requires three-dimensional integration of high-dielectric materials onto metal interconnects or bottom electrodes by 2010. Here, we demonstrate the possibility of conformally coating carbon nanotubes with high-dielectric oxide as a first step toward ultrahigh integration density of three-dimensional ferroelectric random access memories.

A modification of liquid source misted chemical deposition process (LSMCD) with heating mist and substrate has developed, and this enabled to control mist penetrability and fluidity on sidewalls of three-dimensional structures and ensure step coverage. A modified LSMCD process allowed a combinatorial approach of Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 (PZT) thin films and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) toward ultrahigh integration density of ferroelectric random access memories (FeRAMs). The CNTs templates were survived during the crystallization process of deposited PZT film onto CNTs annealed at 650 degrees C in oxygen ambient due to a matter of minute process, so that the thermal budget is quite small. The modified LSMCD process opens up the possibility to realize the nanoscale capacitor structure of ferroelectric PZT film with CNTs electrodes toward ultrahigh integration density FeRAMs.

Enantiopure trans-dihydrodiols have been obtained by a chemoenzymatic synthesis from the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, obtained by dioxygenase-catalysed arene cis-dihydroxylation at the 2,3-bond of monosubstituted benzene substrates. This generally applicable, seven-step synthetic route to trans-dihydrodiols involves a regioselective hydrogenation and a Mitsunobu inversion of configuration at C-2, followed by benzylic bromination and dehydrobromination steps. The method has also been extended to the synthesis of both enantiomers of the trans-dihydrodiol derivatives of toluene, through substitution of a vinyl bromine atom of the corresponding trans-dihydrodiol enantiomers derived from bromobenzene. Through incorporation of hydrogenolysis and diMTPA ester diastereoisomer resolution steps into the synthetic route, both trans-dihydrodiol enantiomers of monohalobenzenes were obtained from the cis-dihydrodiols of 4-haloiodobenzenes.

Chiral enamides5f-i were found to react with pyrylium ylides to give cycloadducts 6d-i in good yields with an excellent level of stereoselectivity. The chiral auxiliary was successfully removed on hydrogenolysis of compound 6f in continuous flow (H-Cube) resulting in the first asymmetric synthesis of complex amine 8.

<p>Surface characterization of amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) by COads IR, pyridine(ads) IR, alkylamine temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), Cs+ and Cu(EDA)(2)(2+) exchange, H-1 NMR, and m-xylene isomerization points to the presence of a broad range of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites. Careful interpretation of IR spectra of adsorbed CO or pyridine confirms the presence of a few very strong Bronsted acid sites (BAS), typically at concentrations lower than 10 mu mol/g. The general procedure for alkylamine TPD, which probes both Bronsted and Lewis acidity, is modified to increase the selectivity to strong Bronsted acid sites. Poisoning of the m-xylene isomerization reaction by a base is presented as a novel method to quantify strong BAS. The surface also contains a weaker form of BAS, in concentrations between 50 and 150 mu mol/g, which can be quantified by COads IR Cu(EDA)(2)(2+) exchange also probes these sites. The structure of these sites remains unclear, but they might arise from the interaction of silanol groups with strong Lewis acid Al3+ sites. The surface also contains nonacidic aluminol and silanol sites (200-400 mu mol/g) and two forms of Lewis acid sites: (i) a weaker form associated with segregated alumina domains containing five-coordinated Al, which make up the interface between these domains and the ASA phase and (ii) a stronger form, which are undercoordinated Al sites grafted onto the silica surface. The acid catalytic activity in bifunctional n-heptane hydroconversion correlates with the concentration of strong BAS. The influence of the support electronegativity on the neopentane hydrogenolysis activity of supported Pt catalysts is considerably larger than that of the support Bronsted acidity. It is argued that strong Lewis acid sites, which are present in ASA but not in gamma-alumina, are essential to transmit the Sanderson electronegativity of the oxide support to the active Pt phase.</p>

<p>A number of tetraalkylammonium and tetraalkylphosphonium amino acid based ionic liquids (AAILs) have been successfully used and recycled for the reactive extraction of naphthenic acids from crude oil and crude oil distillates. Spectral studies show that the mechanism by which this occurs is through the formation of a zwitterionic complex. Therein, the amino acid anion plays a key role in the formation of this complex. <p>The electrochemical reduction of benzoic acid in the presence and absence of hydrogen (H-2) has been investigated using a 10 mu m diameter platinum microelectrode in four different room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), namely [C(4)mim][NTf2], [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], [C(4)mim][OTf] and [C(4)mim][BF4], versus Ag/Ag+. In all cases, reductive voltammetry is observed, and is suggested to occur via a CE mechanism in which dissociation of benzoic acid is followed by electron transfer to H+ ultimately forming adsorbed hydrogen. Furthermore, the adsorbed H atoms, formed from the reduction of benzoic acid, could be used to achieve the rapid hydrogenolysis of the organic compound (bis(benzyloxycarbonyl)-L-lysine) on the timescale of the voltammetric technique under moderate conditions (25 degrees C).</p>

<p>The structure, thermal stability, and catalytic behavior of a novel highly dispersed silica-supported Pd/Sn catalyst prepared by an organometallic route have been examined by X-ray photoelectron, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption, fine structure spectroscopies, the latter two measurements being carried outwith an in situ reaction cell. Additional reactor measurements were performed on a more Sn-rich catalyst and on a pure Pd catalyst. Varying the temperature of reduction induced large variations in catalytic performance toward ethyne-coupling reactions. These changes are understandable in terms of the destruction of SnO2-like structures surrounding the Pd core, yielding a skin of metallic Sn which subsequently undergoes intermixing with Pd. The overall thermal and catalytic behavior of these highly dispersed materials accords well with the analogous single-crystal model system.</p>

This research was directed mainly towards the investigation of the reactions of allylic amineimides. The work can be divided into two main sections. Section 1 of the thesis deals mainly with thermolysis studies of amineimides. Sections 1a and 1b represent a comprehensive survey of amineimide literature up to 1971. N-A1ly1-N,N-dirnethylarnine-benzirnide was prepared and rearranged at 1400 to l-allyl-1-benzoyl-2,2-dimethylhydrazine. A tentative mechanism involving an initial migration to the carbonyl oxygen was disproved by incorporating the amineimide system into a five-membered ring. N,N~Dimethyl-N-propargylamine-benzimidedid not rearrange on heating; but the hydrobromide, on heating, disproportionated to give 1-benzoyl~2,2,2-trimethylhydraziniumbromide and I-benzoyl-2,2~ dimethylhydrazine. l-Ally'l--l, I-dimethyl-2-benzoy-lhydrazinium bromide and 1~benzoy-1-2,2, 2-trimethy-lhydrazinium iodide both disproportionated to give l~benzoyl-2,2-dimethylhydrazine. Section 1 concludes with a discussion of the mechanisms of ally'lic migrations in amineimides proposed by J. E. Baldwin. Section 2 deals with the formation of five-membered heterocyclic compounds from amineimides by bromination. 1,1-Dimethyl-2benzoyl- 4-bromopyrazolidinium bromide was formed from N-allyl-N,Ndime thy-lamtne-benzimide , 1,1-dimethyl-2-benzoyl-4-bromopyrazol-3enium bromide from N,N~dimethyl-N-propargylamine~benzimidevia the unusual acetylenic "bromonium" ion. Hydrogenolysis of both heterocyclic compounds gave the same product. The preparation was extended by forming 2,2-dimethyl-4-bromoisoxazolinium bromide from N-allylN, N-dimethylamine-N-oxide. Sections 3 and 4 cover a number of unsuccessful attempts to synthesise other amineimides and l,2-dipolar species.

Les cyclopropanes sont des motifs dâune grande importance puisquâils sont présents dans plusieurs molécules biologiquement actives en plus dâêtre de puissants intermédiaires dans la synthèse de molécules complexes. Au cours de cet ouvrage, nous avons développé une nouvelle méthode générale pour la synthèse dâylures dâiodonium de malonates, soit dâimportants précurseurs dâesters cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxyliques. Ainsi, à lâaide de ces ylures, une méthode très efficace pour la synthèse dâesters cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxyliques racémiques a été développée. Des travaux ont aussi été entrepris pour la synthèse énantiosélective de ces composés. Par ailleurs, les esters cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxyliques ont été utilisés dans le développement de deux nouvelles méthodologies, soit dans une réaction de cycloaddition (3+3) avec des imines dâazométhines et dans la formation dâallènes par lâaddition-1,7 de cuprates. Nous avons aussi poursuivi lâétude synthétique du cylindrocyclophane F impliquant lâutilisation de cyclopropanes pour le contrôle des centres chiraux. Ainsi lâaddition-1,5 dâun cuprate sur un ester cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylique a été utilisée comme lâune des étapes clés de notre synthèse. Lâautre centre chiral a pu être contrôlé par lâhydrogénolyse sélective dâun cyclopropylméthanol. Ces études ont, par ailleurs, mené au développement dâune nouvelle réaction dâarylcyclopropanation énantiosélective utilisant des carbénoïdes de zinc générés in situ à partir de réactifs diazoïques. Cette méthode permet dâaccéder très efficacement aux cyclopropanes 1,2,3-substitués. De plus, nous avons développé la première réaction de Simmons-Smith catalytique en zinc menant à un produit énantioenrichi.

Lâapplication des métaux de transition à la fonctionnalisation directe a ouvert la voie à une nouvelle classe de réactions pour la formation de liens carbone-carbone. De par l'omniprésence des liaisons CâH, lâintroduction de nouvelles fonctionnalités chimiques par voie directe et pré-activation minimale sâimpose comme une stratégie de synthèse très attrayante. Ainsi, il est envisageable de préparer de manière rapide et efficace des supports complexes menant à des molécules complexes, qui pourraient être utiles dans divers domaines de la chimie. L'objectif principal de la présente thèse vise la fonctionnalisation directe des arènes hétérocycliques et non hétérocycliques et, plus précisément, les techniques dâarylation. Dans un premier temps, nous allons aborder le thème de lâarylation directe tout en mettant lâaccent sur les pyridines (Chapitre 1). Ces molécules sont à la base d'une multitude de composés biologiquement actifs et jouent un rôle important dans le domaine des sciences des matériaux, de lâagrochimie et de la synthèse des produits naturels. Dans un deuxième temps, nous discuterons de nos travaux sur lâarylation directe catalysé par un complex de palladium sur des ylures de N-iminopyridinium en soulignant la dérivatisation du sel de pyridinium après une phénylation sp2 (Chapitre 2). Lâétude de ce procédé nous a permis de mettre en lumière plusieurs découvertes importantes, que nous expliquerons en détails une à une : lâarylation benzylique directe lorsque des ylures N-iminopyridinium substituées avec un groupement alkyl à la position 2 sont utilisés comme partenaires dans la réaction; les allylations Tsuji-Trost catalysée par un complex de palladium; et lâalkylation directe et sans métal via une catalyse par transfert de phase. Plusieurs défis restent à relever pour le développement de procédés directs utilisant des métaux de transition peu coûteux, dâautant plus que la synthèse par transformation directe des pyridines 2-alcényles, lesquelles sont pertinentes sur le plan pharmacologique, nâa pas encore été rapportée à ce jour. Avec cette problématique en tête, nous avons réussi à mettre au point une alcénylation directe catalysé par un complex de cuivre sur des ylures de N-iminopyridinium. Nous discuterons également dâune nouvelle méthode pour la préparation des iodures de vinyle utilisés dans les couplages. Ces réactions sont non seulement remarquablement chimiosélectives, mais sont aussi applicables à plusieurs substrats (Chapitre 3). En optimisant ce procédé direct, nous avons découvert une façon unique de synthétiser les pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridines 2-substituées (Chapitre 4). Le mécanisme global met en jeu une séquence tandem de fonctionnalisation-cyclisation directe et un procédé direct en cascade, qui nâavais jamais été rapporté. Cela simplifie ansi la synthèse autrement compliquée de ces substrats en y apportant une solution à un problème de longue date. Dans les deux derniers chapitres, nous examinerons en détail les techniques dâarylation directe qui n'impliquent pas les partenaires de couplage hétérocycliques. Entre autres, au Chapitre 5, nous soulignerons notre découverte dâun umpolung dirigé et catalysé par un complexe de palladium du benzène et de quelques autres dérivés arènes. Il sâagit là du premier cas de fonctionnalisation directe dans laquelle le groupe directeur se trouve sur le partenaire halogène et il sâajoute à la courte liste dâexemples connus dans la littérature rapportant une arylation directe du benzène. Finalement, au Chapitre 6, nous passerons en revue une nouvelle arylation directe catalysée au fer, qui se veut un procédé peu coûteux, durable et présentant une économie dâatomes. Nous discutons des substrats possibles ainsi des études mécanistiques réalisés.

Pyrroles are found in various natural products and in the chemical composition of certain drugs because of their interesting biological properties. Lipitor, Tolmetin and Amtolmetin are examples of drugs with 1,2,5-substituted pyrroles in their composition, in which biological activities have been certified. Moreover, pyrroles are used as precursors of semiconductor polymers, oligomers and dendrimers useful for the synthesis of electroluminescent materials used in devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, solar and organic photovoltaic cells. We are interested in conjugated polymers based on pyrrole due to their optical properties, electrochemical and the conductivity produced by electron delocalization along their carbon chains. The overall objective of the work presented in this thesis is the synthesis of new molecules based on pyrrole for studying their electronic and electrochemical properties as well for the synthesis of conjugated polymers. Initially, we performed the synthesis of 1,3,5-tri-(1-alkyl-5-methylpyrrol-2-yl)benzenes, which may serve as precursors for the synthesis of conjugated dendrimers. Their synthesis was made in three steps starting from trimethyl 1,3,5-benzene-tricarboxylate which was converted to 1,3,5-tri-(pent-4-enoyl)benzene using vinylmagnesium bromide in a Grignard reaction catalyzed by copper cyanide. The olefins of 1,3,5-tri-(pent-4-enoyl)benzene were oxidized to produce 1,3,5-tri-(4-oxopentanoyl)benzene using a modified protocol of the Tsuji-Wacker reaction. Subsequent, Paal-Knorr condensation reactions on 1,3,5-tri-(4-oxopentanoyl)benzene with different amines were used to synthesize 1,3,5-tri-(1-alkyl-5-methylpyrrol-2-yl)benzenes with different N-substituents in yields between 44 and 60%. Incomplete reaction of vinylmagnesium bromide with trimethyl 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate gave the methyl-3,5-di(pent-4-enoyl)benzoate, which was converted to methyl-3,5-dipyrrolylbenzoate following the reaction of Tsuji- Wacker and Paal-Knorr with yields between 30 and 60%. The photochemical and electrochemical properties of the 1,3,5-tri-(1-alkyl-5-methylpyrrol-2-yl)benzenes and methyl-3,5-dipyrrolylbenzoates were studied in collaboration with the research group of professor William Skene. The results have shown that both types of pyrrole have potential for the synthesis of conjugated polymers and dendrimers used in the manufacture of electroluminescent materials. Following these encouraging results, we performed the synthesis of 6,12-dimethyl-1,5-dipyrrolediazocane. Methyl N-(Boc)-β-alaninate was converted to its corresponding homoallylic ketone, which was oxidized to N-(Boc)aminoheptan-3,6-dione. The Paal-Knorr condensation between N-(Boc)aminoheptan-3,6-dione and aminoheptan-3,6-dione hydrochloride gave 6,12-dimethyl-1,5-dipyrrolediazocane in 17% yield. In sum, we have synthesized and characterized seven new molecules, six of them having photochemical and electrochemical properties interesting for the synthesis of conjugated polymers and dendrimers. The latter offering potential as precursor for the conception of compounds of therapeutic interest.

Introducción: la contaminación atmosférica no solo tiene efectos sobre el sistema respiratorio sino también sobre el cardiovascular. El objetivo de este estudio es generar evidencia que permita establecer una asociación entre el infarto agudo del miocardio y la concentración de PM10 en el ambiente como un estudio preliminar para un grupo de pacientes en Bogotá. Metodología: la asociación entre la concentración del material particulado (en este caso PM10 medido en la estación más cercana del lugar reportado por el paciente) y el infarto agudo del miocardio se estableció utilizando el diseño case crossover. Se utilizó información de las historias clínicas de los pacientes con infarto agudo del miocardio que ingresaron al Servicio de Urgencias de la FSFB, y las concentraciones de PM10 medido en la estación más cercana al lugar de inicio de los síntomas de síndrome coronario agudo, reportado por el paciente. Resultados: se encontró que la asociación entre la concentración de PM10 y el diagnóstico de infarto agudo del miocardio es estadísticamente significativa teniendo en cuenta tres momentos de control: 2 horas antes del evento, 24 horas antes del evento y 48 horas antes del evento. Discusión: este estudio sugiere que las altas concentraciones de material particulado en el ambiente son un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de infarto agudo del miocardio especialmente en personas con enfermedad coronaria subyacente. Con esta investigación se demuestra la importancia de generar acciones que disminuyan la contaminación de la ciudad y de esta forma proteger la salud de las personas.
