We present a measurement of the top quark mass and of the top-antitop pair production cross section using p-pbar data collected with the CDFII detector at the Tevatron Collider at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb-1. We select events with six or more jets satisfying a number of kinematical requirements imposed by means of a neural network algorithm. At least one of these jets must originate from a b quark, as identified by the reconstruction of a secondary vertex inside the jet. The mass measurement is based on a likelihood fit incorporating reconstructed mass distributions representative of signal and background, where the absolute jet energy scale (JES) is measured simultaneously with the top quark mass. The measurement yields a value of 174.8 +- 2.4(stat+JES) ^{+1.2}_{-1.0}(syst) GeV/c^2, where the uncertainty from the absolute jet energy scale is evaluated together with the statistical uncertainty. The procedure measures also the amount of signal from which we derive a cross section, sigma_{ttbar} = 7.2 +- 0.5(stat) +- 1.0 (syst) +- 0.4 (lum) pb, for the measured values of top quark mass and JES.

We report the observation of electroweak single top quark production in 3.2  fb-1 of pp̅ collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at √s=1.96  TeV. Candidate events in the W+jets topology with a leptonically decaying W boson are classified as signal-like by four parallel analyses based on likelihood functions, matrix elements, neural networks, and boosted decision trees. These results are combined using a super discriminant analysis based on genetically evolved neural networks in order to improve the sensitivity. This combined result is further combined with that of a search for a single top quark signal in an orthogonal sample of events with missing transverse energy plus jets and no charged lepton. We observe a signal consistent with the standard model prediction but inconsistent with the background-only model by 5.0 standard deviations, with a median expected sensitivity in excess of 5.9 standard deviations. We measure a production cross section of 2.3-0.5+0.6(stat+sys)  pb, extract the value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vtb|=0.91-0.11+0.11(stat+sys)±0.07  (theory), and set a lower limit |Vtb|>0.71 at the 95% C.L., assuming mt=175  GeV/c2.

We present a signature-based search for anomalous production of events containing a photon, two jets, of which at least one is identified as originating from a b quark, and missing transverse energy. The search uses data corresponding to 2.0/fb of integrated luminosity from p-pbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. From 6,697,466 events with a photon candidate with transverse energy ET> 25 GeV, we find 617 events with missing transverse energy > 25 GeV and two or more jets with ET> 15 GeV, at least one identified as originating from a b quark, versus an expectation of 607+- 113 events. Increasing the requirement on missing transverse energy to 50 GeV, we find 28 events versus an expectation of 30+-11 events. We find no indications of non-standard-model phenomena.

Bone mass accrual and maintenance are regulated by a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Recent studies have revealed an important role for the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) in this process. The aim of this thesis study was to identify novel variants in the LRP5 gene and to further elucidate the association of LRP5 and its variants with various bone health related clinical characteristics. The results of our studies show that loss-of-function mutations in LRP5 cause severe osteoporosis not only in homozygous subjects but also in the carriers of these mutations, who have significantly reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased susceptibility to fractures. In addition, we demonstrated for the first time that a common polymorphic LRP5 variant (p.A1330V) was associated with reduced peak bone mass, an important determinant of BMD and osteoporosis in later life. The results from these two studies are concordant with results seen in other studies on LRP5 mutations and in association studies linking genetic variation in LRP5 with BMD and osteoporosis. Several rare LRP5 variants were identified in children with recurrent fractures. Sequencing and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) analyses revealed no disease-causing mutations or whole-exon deletions. Our findings from clinical assessments and family-based genotype-phenotype studies suggested that the rare LRP5 variants identified are not the definite cause of fractures in these children. Clinical assessments of our study subjects with LPR5 mutations revealed an unexpectedly high prevalence of impaired glucose tolerance and dyslipidaemia. Moreover, in subsequent studies we discovered that common polymorphic LRP5 variants are associated with unfavorable metabolic characteristics. Changes in lipid profile were already apparent in pre-pubertal children. These results, together with the findings from other studies, suggest an important role for LRP5 also in glucose and lipid metabolism. Our results underscore the important role of LRP5 not only in bone mass accrual and maintenance of skeletal health but also in glucose and lipid metabolism. The role of LRP5 in bone metabolism has long been studied, but further studies with larger study cohorts are still needed to evaluate the specific role of LRP5 variants as metabolic risk factors.

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää tilalla määritetyn hyvinvoinnin yhteyttä emakoiden tuotantotuloksiin. Hyvinvointia arvioitiin suomalaisen hyvinvointi-indeksin, A-indeksi, avulla. Maksimipistemäärä osastolle on 100. Kahden eri tuotantoaineiston avulla saadut tulokset erosivat toisistaan. Seuraavissa tutkimuksissa onkin suositeltavampaa käyttää Tilaraporttiaineistoja, joissa tuotokset ilmoitetaan vuosikohtaisina. Tämän tutkimuksen perusteella hyvinvoinnilla ja tuotoksella on yhteyksiä, joilla on myös merkittävää taloudellista vaikutusta. Erityisesti hyvä eläinten hoito ja eläinten terveys lisäävät tuotettujen porsaiden määrää ja lyhentävät lisääntymiskiertoa. Erityishuomiota tulee kiinnittää vapaana olevien joutilaiden emakoiden sosiaaliseen stressiin ja rehunsaannin varmistamiseen kaikille yksilöille.

Be/X-ray binary pulsars have wide eccentric orbits and hence the angle of periastron of the orbit is very well defined in these sources. The presence of an X-ray pulsar allows for accurate measurements of orbital elements. A Be star usually is a rapidly rotating star and hence will deviate from spherical geometry. The tidal interaction between the neutron star and the Be star will add to the distortion of the Be star and alter its mass distribution. Thus a measurable rate of apsidal motion is expected from these systems. In this paper, we present the first conclusive detection of apsidal motion of the binary 4U 0115+63. We also present new and accurate orbital parameters of the Be/X-ray binaries V0332+53 and 2S 1417-624.

The unfolding of the chicken egg white riboflavin carrier protein by disulfide reduction with dithiothreitol led to aggregation with concomitant loss of ligand binding characteristics and the capacity to interact with six monoclonal antibodies directed against surface-exposed discontinuous epitopes. The reduced protein could, however, bind to a monoclonal antibody recognizing sequential epitope. Under optimal conditions of protein refolding, the vitamin carrier protein regained its folded structure with high efficiency with simultaneous complete restoration of hydrophobic flavin binding site as well as the epitopic conformations exposed at the surface in a manner comparable to its native form.

Vapour adsorption refrigeration systems (VAdS) have the advantage of scalability over a wide range of capacities ranging from a few watts to several kilowatts. In the first instance, the design of a system requires the characteristics of the adsorbate-adsorbent pair. Invariably, the void volume in the adsorbent reduces the throughput of the thermal compressor in a manner similar to the clearance volume in a reciprocating compressor. This paper presents a study of the activated carbon +HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) system as a possible pair for a typical refrigeration application. The aim of this study is to unfold the nexus between the adsorption parameters, achievable packing densities of charcoal and throughput of a thermal compressor. It is shown that for a thermal compressor, the adsorbent should not only have a high surface area, but should also be able to provide a high packing density. Given the adsorption characteristics of an adsorbent-adsorbate pair and the operating conditions, this paper discloses a method for the calculation of the minimum packing density necessary for an effective throughput of a thermal compressor. Social, economic and political development of a region is dependent on the health and quantity of the natural resources. Integrated approaches in the management of natural resources would ensure sustainability, which demands inventorying, mapping and monitoring of resources considering all components of an ecosystem. The monitoring of hydrological and catchment landscape of river resources have a vital role in the conservation and management of aquatic resources. This paper presents a case study Venkatapura river basin in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka State, India based on stream hydrology and landuse analyses. The results revealed variations in dissolved oxygen and free carbon dioxide according to the flow nature of the water, and increased amount of phosphates and coliform contamination in streams closer to anthropogenic activities.

In the present investigation, various kinds of surface textures were attained on the steel plates. Roughness of the textures was varied using various grinding or polishing methods. The surface textures were characterized in terms of roughness parameters using an optical profilometer. Then experiments were conducted using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding apparatus to identify the role of surface texture and its roughness parameters on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. In the experiments, a soft polymer (polypropylene) was used for the pin and hardened steel was used for the plate. Experiments were conducted at a sliding velocity of 2 minis in ambient conditions under both dry and lubricated conditions. The normal load was varied from 1 to 120 N during the tests. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of a transfer layer on the steel plate surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Based on the experimental results, it was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely adhesion and plowing, were controlled by the surface texture of the harder mating surfaces and were less dependent of surface roughness (R(a)) of the harder mating surfaces. The effect of surface texture on the friction was attributed to the variation of the plowing component of friction for different surfaces. Among the various surface roughness parameters studied, the mean slope of the profile, Delta(a), was found to most accurately characterize variations in the friction and wear behavior. Thermoacoustics is the interaction between heat and sound, which are useful in designing heat engines and heat pumps. Research in the field of thermoacoustics focuses on the demand to improve the performance which is achieved by altering operational, geometrical and fluid parameters. The present study deals with improving the performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover, which has gained the significant importance in the recent years for the production of high amplitude sound waves. The performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover is evaluated in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude of the acoustic waves by varying the resonator length and charge pressures of fluid medium nitrogen. DeltaEC, the free simulation software developed by LANL, USA is employed in the present study to simulate the performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover. Experimental and simulated results are compared and the deviation is found to be within 10%.

Electrical switching studies on amorphous Si15Te74Ge11 thin film devices show interesting changes in the switching behavior with changes in the input energy supplied; the input energy determines the extent of crystallization in the active volume, which is reflected in the value of SET resistances. This in turn, determines the trend exhibited by switching voltage (V-t) for different input conditions. The results obtained are analyzed on the basis of the amount of Joule heat generated, which determines the temperature of the active volume. Depending on the final temperature, devices are rendered either in the intermediate state with a resistance of 5*10(2) Omega or the ON state with a resistance of 5*10(1) Omega. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.
