A real-time, in situ fixing method by use of heating with a CO2 laser beam is suggested for thermal fixing of a small local hologram in the bulk of a Fe:LiNbO3 photorefractive crystal. For heating up to 100 degrees C-200 degrees C a volume with a shape similar to that of the laser beam a heat-guiding technique is developed. On the basis of the heat-transfer equations, different heating modes with or without metal absorbers for heat guiding-obtained by use of a continuous or pulsed laser beam are analyzed. The optimal mode may be pulsed heating with absorbers. On this basis experiments have been designed and demonstrated. It is seen that the fixing process with CO2 laser beam is short compared with the process by use of an oven, and the fixing efficiency is quite high. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.

The photorefractive holographic dynamics of grating formation in photochromic doubly doped LiNbO3:Fe:Mn crystal is studied numerically and analytically in terms of the two-center model of Kukhtarev Et al. [Ferroelectrics 22, 949 (1979)]. The relations among the recorded and fixed space-charge fields and the doping densities, the oxidation-reduction states of the fields, and the intensities of UV-sensitizing and red recording beams are studied. Important conditions and effects are feued, and an optimal prescription for material doping and oxidation-reduction processing is suggested in which the crystal can be strongly oxidized and the Mn-doping density is smaller than the Fe-doping density. The absorption characteristic of lithium niobate crystals doped with chromium and copper (Cr and Cu) is investigated. We find that there are two apparent absorption bands for LiNbO3:Cr:Cu crystal doped with 0.14 wt.% Cr2O3 and 0.011 wt.% CuO; one is around 480 nm, and the other is around 660 nm. With a decrease in the doping composition of Cr and an increase in the doping composition of Cu, no apparent absorption band in the shorter wavelength range exists. The higher the doping level of Cr, the larger the absorbance around 660 nm. Although a 633 nm red light is located in the absorption band around 660 nm, the absorption at 633 nm does not help the photorefractive process; i.e., unlike other doubly doped crystals, for example, LiNbO3:Fe:Mn crystal, a nonvolatile holographic recording can be realized by a 633 nm red light as the recording light and a 390 nm UV light as the sensitizing light. For LiNbO3:Cr:Cu crystals, by changing the recording light from a 633 nm red light to a 514 nm green light, sensitizing with a 390 nm UV light and a 488 nm blue light, respectively, a nonvolatile holographic recording can be realized. Doping the appropriate Cr (for example, N-Cr = 2.795 X 10(25)m(-3) and N-Cr/N-Cu = 1) benefits the improvement of holographic recording properties. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Modulated UV light is used to increase the sensitivity of the two-centre holographic recording. Inherent mechanisms of nonvolatile holographic recording in oxidized and reduced crystals are numerically analysed based on solving the two-centre material equations modilied for UV-Iight recording. Experiments verification is performed with an oxidized crystal and a reduced crystal, and the role of UV intensity on the sensitivity is presented.

From the chemical bond viewpoint, second-order non-linear optical (NLO) tenser coefficients of KNbO3 and LiNbO3 crystals have been calculated. By using the bond-valence theory of complex crystals and the modified bond-charge model, we were able to determine contributions of each type of constituent chemical bond to the total second-order NLO susceptibility. The tenser values thus calculated are in good agreement with experimental data. From the comparison of NLO tenser coefficients of these two crystals, we found that the major NLO contributors are KO12 groups and LiO6 octahedra not the distorted NbO6 octahedra. The difference between their NLO properties arises from their different structural characters, and the high coordination number of constituent elements in KNbO3 makes its valence electrons become more delocalised compared with those of LiNbO3. Erbium-doped single crystal fibers, with low phonon energy and fairly high absorption and emission cross sections are interesting laser active media, for compact, near-infrared and/or upconversion lasers. In this work, high optical quality Er3+-doped CaNb2O6 and CaTa2O6 single crystal fibers were successfully grown by the versatile laser-heated pedestal growth technique, and characterized from the structural and spectroscopic points of view. The results indicate that these crystal fiber compositions, which had not been explored so far, offer potential applications, not only as laser active media, but also in other optical devices. LiNbO3 thin films were prepared from polymeric precursor method by dip coating. The precursor films, deposited on Si(111) substrates, were heat-treated from 400°C to 900°C in order to study the heat treatment influence on the crystallinity and microstructure of the final film. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed, in particular, that these films crystallize at low temperature (450°C) and present no preferential orientation. The scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the film microstructure is strongly influenced by the annealing temperature. © 1997 Trans Tech Publications.

Polymeric precursor solution was used to deposit LiNbO3 thin films by dip coating on sapphire substrates. The effects of processing variables, such as heat treatment conditions and number of deposited layers, on crystallinity and morphology of the final films were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns show the oriented growth of the films. The rocking curves, obtained around the (006) LiNbO3 peak, revealed that the shape peak and the FWHM value were influenced by the processing variables. According to these parameters, some films presented very homogeneous dense and smooth surfaces, as shown by the SEM and AFM studies.

The effects of heat-treatment temperature on LiNbO3 thin films prepared by the polymeric precursor method were investigated. The precursor solution was deposited on Si(111) substrates by dip coating. X-ray diffraction and thermal analyses revealed that the crystallization process occurred at a low temperature (420 °C) and led to films with no preferential orientation. High-temperature treatments promoted formation of the LiNb3O8 phase. Scanning electron microscopy, coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses, showed that the treatment temperature also affected the film microstructure. The surface texture - homogeneous, smooth, and pore-free at low temperature - turned into an `islandlike' microstructure for high-temperature treatments.

The elastic strain/stress fields (halo) around a compressed amorphous nano-track (core) caused by a single high-energy ion impact on LiNbO3 are calculated. A method is developed to approximately account for the effects of crystal anisotropy of LiNbO3 (symmetry 3m) on the stress fields for tracks oriented along the crystal axes (X, Y or Z). It only considers the zero-order (axial) harmonic contribution to the displacement field in the perpendicular plane and uses effective Poisson moduli for each particular orientation. The anisotropy is relatively small; however, it accounts for some differential features obtained for irradiations along the crystallographic axes X, Y and Z. In particular, the irradiation-induced disorder (including halo) and the associated surface swelling appear to be higher for irradiations along the X- or Y-axis in comparison with those along the Z-axis. Other irradiation effects can be explained by the model, e.g. fracture patterns or the morphology of pores after chemical etching of tracks. Moreover, it offers interesting predictions on the effect of irradiation on lattice parameters

We report on the operational parameters that are required to fabricate buried, microstructured waveguides in a z-cut lithium niobate crystal by the method of direct femtosecond laser inscription using a highrepetition-rate, chirped-pulse oscillator system. Refractive index contrasts as high as −0.0127 have been achieved for individual modification tracks. The results pave the way for developing microstructured WGs with low-loss operation across a wide spectral range, extending into the mid-infrared region up to the end of the transparency range of the host material.

The Raman spectra at 77 K of the hydroxyl stretching of kaolinite were obtained along the three axes perpendicular to the crystal faces. Raman bands were observed at 3616, 3658 and 3677 cm−1 together with a distinct band observed at 3691 cm−1 and a broad profile between 3695 and 3715 cm−1. The band at 3616 cm−1 is assigned to the inner hydroxyl. The bands at 3658 and 3677 cm−1 are attributed to the out-of-phase vibrations of the inner surface hydroxyls. The Raman spectra of the in-phase vibrations of the inner-surface hydroxyl-stretching region are described in terms of transverse and longitudinal optic splitting. The band at 3691 cm−1 is assigned to the transverse optic and the broad profile to the longitudinal optic mode. This splitting remained even at liquid nitrogen temperature. The transverse optic vibration may be curve resolved into two or three bands, which are attributed to different types of hydroxyl groups in the kaolinite.
