The author's mother Alice Goldschmidt was a gifted piano player, who studied with Carl Maria Breithaupt and became his most talented student. Childhood recollections. Early musical awakening. Outbreak of World War One. Recollections of air raids and scarceness of food. Inflation and political instability in post-war Germany. Piano lessons by her mother from an early age. Heida made her debut at age fourteen with the Wiesbaden Symphony under the conductor Carl Schuricht, who became a close mentor and friend. Close relationship to her mother, who had a great influence on her professional career. Heida had a number of outstanding teachers, among them Artur Schnabel, Karl Leimer and Egon Petri. Heida was accepted as a student of Petri at the "Hochschule fuer Musik" in Berlin, where she studied between 1922-1925. Salon at her aunt's house with guests such as the playwright Georg Kaiser and Siegfried Wagner. Her sister Elsie received her Ph.D. in economics and moved to Berlin as well. Heida graduated from the "Hochschule" in 1925. Soon after she won an international piano competition in Berlin. Engagements with various conductors such as Max Fiedler and Otto Klemperer. Private lessons with Arthur Schnabel and Carl Friedberg, the co-founder of Juilliard. Due to occasional experiences of antisemitism during her music career Heida decided to change her name from Goldschmidt to Hermanns. Position at the "Hoch Conservatory" in Frankfurt. Encounter with the music critic Artur Holde, Heida's future-husband. Engagement and wedding in 1932. Move to Berlin.

Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on (Re)Creating Lively Cities Through Ambient Technology in Arts, Culture and Gastronomic Experiences

Digital and interactive technologies are becoming increasingly embedded in everyday lives of people around the world. Application of technologies such as real-time, context-aware, and interactive technologies; augmented and immersive realities; social media; and location-based services has been particularly evident in urban environments where technological and sociocultural infrastructures enable easier deployment and adoption as compared to non-urban areas. There has been growing consumer demand for new forms of experiences and services enabled through these emerging technologies. We call this ambient media, as the media is embedded in the natural human living environment. This workshop focuses on ambient media services, applications, and technologies that promote people’s engagement in creating and recreating liveliness in urban environments, particularly through arts, culture, and gastronomic experiences. The RelCi workshop series is organized in cooperation with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), in particular the Urban Informatics Lab and the Tampere University of Technology (TUT), in particular the Entertainment and Media Management (EMMi) Lab. The workshop runs under the umbrella of the International Ambient Media Association (AMEA) (http://www.ambientmediaassociation.org), which is hosting the international open access journal entitled “International Journal on Information Systems and Management in Creative eMedia”, and the international open access series “International Series on Information Systems and Management in Creative eMedia” (see http://www.tut.fi/emmi/Journal). The RelCi workshop took place for the first time in 2012 in conjunction with ICME 2012 in Melbourne, Autralia; and this year’s edition took place in conjunction with INTERACT 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. Besides, the International Ambient Media Association (AMEA) organizes the Semantic Ambient Media (SAME) workshop series, which took place in 2008 in conjunction with ACM Multimedia 2008 in Vancouver, Canada; in 2009 in conjunction with AmI 2009 in Salzburg, Austria; in 2010 in conjunction with AmI 2010 in Malaga, Spain; in 2011 in conjunction with Communities and Technologies 2011 in Brisbane, Australia; in 2012 in conjunction with Pervasive 2012 in Newcastle, UK; and in 2013 in conjunction with C&T 2013 in Munich, Germany.

Between photocatalysis and photosynthesis: Synchrotron spectroscopy methods on molecules and materials for solar hydrogen generation

Energy research is to a large extent materials research, encompassing the physics and chemistry of materials, including their synthesis, processing toward components and design toward architectures, allowing for their functionality as energy devices, extending toward their operation parameters and environment, including also their degradation, limited life, ultimate failure and potential recycling. In all these stages, X-ray and electron spectroscopy are helpful methods for analysis, characterization and diagnostics for the engineer and for the researcher working in basic science.This paper gives a short overview of experiments with X-ray and electron spectroscopy for solar energy and water splitting materials and addresses also the issue of solar fuel, a relatively new topic in energy research. The featured systems are iron oxide and tungsten oxide as photoanodes, and hydrogenases as molecular systems. We present surface and subsurface studies with ambient pressure XPS and hard X-ray XPS, resonant photoemission, light induced effects in resonant photoemission experiments and a photo-electrochemical in situ/operando NEXAFS experiment in a liquid cell, and nuclear resonant vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS). Electronic structure origin of conductivity and oxygen reduction activity changes in low-level Cr-substituted (La, Sr)MnO3

The electronic structure of the (La0.8Sr0.2)(0.98)Mn1-xCrxO3 model series (x = 0, 0.05, or 0.1) was measured using soft X-ray synchrotron radiation at room and elevated temperature. O K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra showed that low-level chromium substitution of (La, Sr)MnO3 resulted in lowered hybridisation between O 2p orbitals and M 3d and M 4sp valance orbitals. Mn L-3-edge resonant photoemission spectroscopy measurements indicated lowered Mn 3d-O 2p hybridisation with chromium substitution. Deconvolution of O K-edge NEXAFS spectra took into account the effects of exchange and crystal field splitting and included a novel approach whereby the pre-peak region was described using the nominally filled t(2g) up arrow state. 10% chromium substitution resulted in a 0.17 eV lowering in the energy of the t(2g) up arrow state, which appears to provide an explanation for the 0.15 eV rise in activation energy for the oxygen reduction reaction, while decreased overlap between hybrid O 2p-Mn 3d states was in qualitative agreement with lowered electronic conductivity. An orbital-level understanding of the thermodynamically predicted solid oxide fuel cell cathode poisoning mechanism involving low-level chromium substitution on the B-site of (La, Sr)MnO3 is presented. The electronic, chemical and electrocatalytic processes and intermediates on iron oxide surfaces during photoelectrochemical water splitting

We re-assess experimental soft X-ray absorption spectra of the oxygen K-shell which we recorded operando from iron oxide during photoelectrochemical water splitting in KOH electrolyte. In particular, we refer to recently reported transitional electron hole states which originate within the charge carrier depletion layer of the iron oxide and on the iron oxide surface. For the latter we find that an intermediate oxy-peroxo species is formed on the iron oxide with increasing bias potential, which disappears upon further polarization of the electrode, concomitantly with the evolution and disappearance of the aforementioned surface state. The oxygen spectra contain also the spectroscopic signatures of the electrolyte water, the position of which changes with increasing bias potential towards lower X-ray energies, revealing the breaking and formation of hydrogen bonds in the water during the experiment. Combined with potential dependent impedance spectroscopy data we are able to sketch the molecular structure of chemical intermediates and their charge carrier dynamics. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Relatores Adjuntos da Comissão de Sistematização cumpriram o prazo e entregaram a revisão final das emendas ao anteprojeto de Constituição ao Presidente da Comissão Afonso Arinos (PFL-RJ). José Ignácio Ferreira (PMDB-ES) explica como foi minuciosa a análise das emendas. O PMDB, o PFL e o PDT fecharam acordo para aprovar o parecer sobre as emendas, sem admissão de destaques. Adolfo Oliveira (PL-RJ) diz que o anteprojeto receberá milhares de contribuições e vai merecer um estudo criterioso por parte do Relator Bernardo Cabral para o preparo de um projeto que some as propostas das comissões temáticas com as do Plenário. Vivaldo Barbosa (PDT-RJ) ressalta que, durante os próximos trinta dias, a sociedade como um todo e os constituintes poderão enviar suas emendas e espera que desse trabalho conjunto se possa produzir uma Constituição capaz de promover a democracia e a justiça social no país. Na sessão O Povo Pergunta, cidadão quer saber como os constituintes estão fazendo para a melhoria dos transportes públicos. Átila Lira (PFL-PI) responde que a Constituição tratará de princípios em relação ao sistema de transporte, como um serviço público de responsabilidade do Estado, podendo ser explorado diretamente ou por concessão à iniciativa privada. A Comissão de Sistematização da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC) reuniu-se extraordinariamente para votar dois projetos de decisão. O primeiro sobre a dívida externa e o outro sobre a transmissão obrigatória de todas as votações plenárias pelo rádio e televisão. Artur da Távola (PMDB-RJ) não considera que impor ao telespectador a transmissão obrigatória de todas as sessões seja a melhor solução, mas sugere que o tempo do programa Diário da Constituinte possa ser ampliado, de tal forma que seja transmitido o resumo dos trabalhos. Plínio de Arruda Sampaio (PT-SP) defende o projeto de decisão.

Começa a primeira sessão dedicada ao debate dos temas mais polêmicos na Constituinte. O Líder do PMDB Mário Covas (PMDB-SP) fez o sorteio dos debatedores do partido que vão ficar encarregados de cada sessão. O primeiro assunto é o regime de governo, presidencialismo ou parlamentarismo. O Conselho de Comunicação também é tema polêmico na Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC). A Deputada Rita Furtado (PFL-RO) informa que seu grupo não aceita a figura do Conselho. O Deputado Bernardo Cabral (PMDB-AM), Relator da Comissão de Sistematização, opta pela existência do Conselho, previsto no substitutivo do Deputado Artur da Távola (PMDB-RJ). O Deputado Arolde de Oliveira (PFL-RJ) informa que o Conselho é desnecessário, pois o Congresso tem função fiscalizadora. Armando Rollemberg, Presidente da Federação Nacional dos Jornalistas, defende o controle público para a concessão de canais de rádio e de televisão. O Deputado Roberto D`Ávila (PDT-RJ) declara que é favorável ao Conselho de Comunicação, com pessoas representativas da sociedade brasileira, de tal forma que o poder de outorga de canais de comunicação não seja mais prerrogativa apenas do Presidente da República. Histórico da ideia de criação do Conselho de Comunicação. O Deputado Jorge Maluly Neto (PFL-SP) declara que a opinião pública há de ser pública e não uma opinião publicada por poucos, porque isso leva a um problema de segurança do país. O Deputado Arolde de Oliveira (PFL-RJ) considera que não tem havido alternância do poder porque, se houvesse, também a distribuição de canais de rádio e de tv seria absolutamente democrática. O Deputado Carlos Alberto Oliveira Caó (PDT-RJ) afirma ser necessário pensar em mecanismos que assegurem a pluralidade de informações, que garanta a qualquer grupo social o acesso aos meios de informação. O Deputado Antônio Brito (PMDB-RS) declara que é certo que nada nesta matéria será da forma como é hoje, o que já significa um avanço.
