Results of the Austrian-Ceylonese hydrobiological mission 1970 of the 1st Zoological Institute of the University of Vienna (Austria) and the Department of Zoology of the University of Ceylon Vidyalankara Campus, Kelaniya. Pt. 12. Contributions to the ecology of the larvae of some Odonata from Ceylon

The Austrian-Ceylonese hydrobiological mission studied 38 biotopes; 28 of which contain Odonata. From the Zygoptera the Calopterydoidea seem to be the dominant form (22 habitats), while the Coenagrionoidea are scarcer (11 habitats). The most frequent species was Euphaea splendens (Epallagidae - 16 habitats) followed by Vestolis apicalis nigrescens (Calopterygidae, 8 habitats) and Neurobasis chinensis (Calopterygidae, 6 habitats). From the Anisoptera Zygonyx ceylanica (Libellulidae: Zygonictinae) was the dominant form (8 habitats), but some Libellulinae remain undescribed. The number of species varied greatly between different biotopes. The biotopes containing Odonata are small brooks, in which the pH was mostly on the limit between acid and alkaline reaction. They are fast running waters, situated in most cases on lower or middle elevations, only three species being found in higher elevations (1800-2000 m). Adaptations to fast currents and other factors are described.

Electron diffraction and photoemission studies of clean and water-covered Si(5,5,12) and Si(112) surfaces

The structure of silicon surfaces in the orientation range (113)-(5,5,12)-(337)-(112) has been investigated using high resolution LEED and photoemission both on a spherical and on flat samples. We find that Si(5,5,12) [5.3 degrees from (113) and 0.7 degrees from (937)] is the only stable orientation between (113) and (111) and confirm the result of Baski et al. [Science 269, 1556 (1995)] that it has a 2 x 1 superstructure with a very large unit cell of 7.68 x 53.5 Angstrom(2). Adsorption measurements of water on Si(5,5,12) yield a mobile precursor kinetics with two kinds of regions saturating at 0.25 and 0.15 ML which are related to adsorption on different sites. Using these results, a modified structure model is proposed. Surfaces between (113) and (5,5,12) separate into facets of these two orientations; between (5,5,12) and (112), they separate into (5,5,12) and (111) facets. (337) facets in this range may be considered as defective (5,5,12) facets.

Half-Lives of Superheavy Nuclei in Z=113 Alpha Decay Chain

The generalized liquid drop model (GLDM), including the proximity effects and centrifugal potential, and the cluster model with Cosh potential are used to study the half-lives of some Z=113 isotopes and their alpha-decay products.The experimental half-lives of (284)113, (283)113, (282)113and their alpha-decay products are well reproduced by the two models when zero angular momenta transfer is assumed. For (278)113 and its alpha-decay products, both the GLDM andthe cluster model could provide satisfactory results if we assume the alpha particle carry five units of angular momenta, which indicates that possible non zero angular momenta transfer and need further experimental measurements with high precision. Finally, we show that half-lives of alpha-decay are quite sensitive to the angular momentum transfers, and a formula could be used to describe the correlation between alpha-decay half-life and angular momentum transfer successfully.

Estructura especiológica de los subsistemas dermesal costero y pelagial costero. Prospección E/E Huamanga 9611-12

Se analiza la composición especiológica y distribución de las capturas obtenidas en la Prospección Pesquera Costera efectuada entre Punta Malpelo (03°30,32 'S; 80°33,36 'W), sur de Puerto Pizarro, y bahía Grande (11°12,46 'S; 77°43,20 'W), al norte de Huacho. Se capturaron 115 especies: 86 peces, 17 crustáceos, 6 moluscos, 3 equinodermos, un cnidario, un sálpido y un poliqueto. Los recursos demersales, con lances de arrastre de fondo, efectuados entre las Puntas Malpelo y Malabrigo (07°43,05 'S, 79°38,75 'W), tuvieron la mayor diversidad (113 especies) y la mayor captura (11 639,4 kg de pesca) destacando por sus volúmenes, tres especies que representaron el 74% de la pesca de arrastre: la merluza (Merluccius gayi peruanus con 6.508,1 kg) seguida del falso volador (Prionotus stephanophrys con 1.603,85 kg) y la anchoveta blanca (Anchoa nasus con 499,85 kg). Los recursos pelágicos se capturaron en menor volumen (581,2 kg), y dos especies constituyeron el 95,3% del total: la anchoveta (Engraulis ringens con 251,95 kg) y el bagre con faja (Galeichthys peruvianus con 301,7 kg).

Letter - E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon, 12 June 1918

Eleanore Celeste mentions the Xmas leave that Arthur Schmon will take. The next part of the letter mentions a couple of friends. One friend is suffering from inflammatory rheumatism and the other friend wants to serve in the military, but his eyesight requires him to stay back in the US. The final portion of the letter appears to be a poem. This letter is labelled number 113.

Gonzalo Menéndez-Pidal y Goyri (12.4.1919-11.12.2008).

Se realiza una biografía de Gonzalo Menéndez-Pidal y Goyri fallecido en Madrid el 11 de diciembre de 2008. Persona difícil de encasillar dado lo original, variado y extenso del contenido de su obra y de su propio carácter. La influencia familiar y los inicios escolares le aproximan a la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, por la cual siente amor y admiración. Se le considera un científico humanista o como un historiador analítico interesado en el estudio y la comprensión de cualquier tema o cualquier época. Lo grande y lo pequeño despertaban igualmente su curiosidad y eran objeto de estudio.
