To permit the tracking of turbulent flow structures in an Eulerian frame from single-point measurements, we make use of a generalization of conventional two-dimensional quadrant analysis to three-dimensional octants. We characterize flow structures using the sequences of these octants and show how significance may be attached to particular sequences using statistical mull models. We analyze an example experiment and show how a particular dominant flow structure can be identified from the conditional probability of octant sequences. The frequency of this structure corresponds to the dominant peak in the velocity spectra and exerts a high proportion of the total shear stress. We link this structure explicitly to the propensity for sediment entrainment and show that greater insight into sediment entrainment can be obtained by disaggregating those octants that occur within the identified macroturbulence structure from those that do not. Hence, this work goes beyond critiques of Reynolds stress approaches to bed load entrainment that highlight the importance of outward interactions, to identifying and prioritizing the quadrants/octants that define particular flow structures. The relation between the equivalent roughness and different grain size percentiles of the sediment in gravel-bed rivers was determined under the hypothesis that the vertical distribution of the flow velocity follows a logarithmic law. A set of 954 data points was selected from rivers with gravel size sediment or larger, with a non-sinuous alignment and free of vegetation or obstacles. According to the results, the ks roughness is equivalent to approximately 2.4D90, 2.8D84, and 6.1D50. No correlation was detected between the sediment sorting and the sediment mobility index on one hand, and, on the other, the coefficient of proportionality of each grain size percentile.

A study of the angular distributions of leptons from decays of J/ψ"s produced in p-C and p-W collisions at s√=41.6~GeV has been performed in the J/ψ Feynman-x region −0.341 GeV/c a significant dependence on the reference frame is found: the polar anisotropy is more pronounced in the Collins-Soper frame and almost vanishes in the helicity frame, where, instead, a significant azimuthal anisotropy arises.

The aim of this thesis is to study the mixing of fuel and, also to some extent, the mixing of air in a circulating fluidized bed boiler. In the literature survey part of this thesis, a review is made of the previous experimental studies related to the fuel and air mixing in the circulating fluidized beds. In the simulation part of it the commercial computational fluid dynamics software (FLUENT) is used with the Eulerian multiphase model for studying the fuel mixing in the two and three-dimensional furnace geometries. The results of the three-dimensional simulations are promising and, therefore suggestions are made for the future simulations. The two-dimensional studies give new information of the effects of the fluidization velocity, fuel particle size and fuel density on the fuel mixing. However, the present results show that three-dimensional models produce more realistic representation of the circulating fluidized bed behavior.

Tässä työssä selvitettiin heliumjäähdytteisellä kuulakekoreaktorilla tuotetun sähkön hinnan muodostumista. Saatuja tuloksia vertailtiin hiilidioksidin erotuksen savukaasuista mahdollistavilla laitteilla varustettuihin hiili- ja maakaasuvoimalaitoksiin sekä kevytvesitekniikalla toteutettuun ydinvoimalaan. Työssä käytiin lyhyesti läpi kuulakekoreaktorin tekniikkaa ja mahdollisia sovelluskohteita, joissa voidaan käyttää hyväksi reaktorin jäähdytteen korkeaa lämpötilaa. Kuulakekoreaktorin kustannustietoja arvioitiin eri lähteissä esitettyjen lukujen perusteella. Ominaisinvestointikustannukseksi saatiin 1722 €/kWe. Sähköntuotannon polttoainekustannukseksi laskettiin 5,4 €/MWh ja käyttö- ja kunnossapito-kustannuksina käytettiin 7 €/MWh. Laitoksen sähköntuotantokustannusten laskenta suoritettiin annuiteettimenetelmällä käyttäen 5 % reaalikorkoa ja 40 vuoden taloudellista pitoaikaa sekä 90 % käyttökerrointa. Laskuissa käytettiin vuoden 2002 hintatasoa. Laskelmien perusteella kuulakekoreaktorin sähköntuotantokustannukseksi saatiin 25,1 €/MWh. Tämän todettiin olevan samalla tasolla kuin kevytvesireaktorilla tuotetun sähkön hinta. Hiilidioksidin erotuslaitteilla varustetun hiilivoimalaitoksen sähköntuotantokustannukseksi saatiin 44,0 €/MWh ja maakaasukombivoimalaitoksen 36,3 €/MWh.

This study evaluated the chemical composition of peeled and unpeeled green banana Cavendish (AAA) flour obtained by drying in spouted bed, aiming at adding nutritional value to food products. The bananas were sliced and crushed to obtain a paste and fed to the spouted bed dryer (12 cm height and T = 80 ºC) in order to obtain flour. The flours obtained were subjected to analysis of moisture, protein, ash, carbohydrates, total starch, resistant starch, fiber. The green banana flours, mainly unpeeled, are good sources of fiber and resistant starch with an average of 21.91g/100g and 68.02g/100g respectively. The protein content was found in an average of 4.76g/100g, being classified as a low biological value protein with lysine as the first limiting amino acid. The results showed that unpeeled green banana flour obtained by spouted bed drying can be a valuable tool to add nutritional value to products in order to increase their non-digestible fraction.

Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli löytää keinoja erään leijukerroskattilan typenoksidipäästöjen vähentämiseksi. Koska päästöt olivat jo alunperin alhaiset leijukerrostekniikan ja hybridin SNCR/SCR –typenpoistolaitteiston ansiosta, päätettiin päästöjä lähteä vähentämään parantamalla ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätöä. Alkuperäinen ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätö oli liian hidas, jotta satunnaisten häiriöiden aiheuttamat typenoksidipiikit olisi pystytty poistamaan. Ammoniakkiruiskutusta parannettiin lisäämällä jokaiseen ammoniakkilinjaan mäntäpumput, joiden avulla ammoniakkia voidaan syöttää sinne, missä sitä eniten tarvitaan. Ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätöön kehitettiin uusi sumeaan logiikkaan perustuva säätäjä. Myös muita kehittyneitä säätömenetelmiä kuten neuroverkkoa hyödynnettiin säätäjän kehityksessä. Ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätäjää testattiin menestyksekkäästi Ruotsissa Brista Kraftin Märstassa sijaitsevalla voimalaitoksella

The aim of this thesis was to develop a model, which can predict heat transfer, heat release distribution and vertical temperature profile of gas phase in the furnace of a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler. The model is based on three separate model components that take care of heat transfer, heat release distribution and mass and energy balance calculations taking into account the boiler design and operating conditions. The model was successfully validated by solving the model parameters on the basis of commercial size BFB boiler test run information and by performing parametric studies with the model. Implementation of the developed model for the Foster Wheeler BFB design procedures will require model validation with existing BFB database and possibly more detailed measurements at the commercial size BFB boilers.

Työn tavoite oli kehittää karakterisointimenetelmät kalkkikiven ja polttoaineen tuhkan jauhautumisen ennustamiselle kiertoleijukattilan tulipesässä. Kiintoainekäyttäytymisen karakterisoinnilla ja mallintamisella voidaan tarkentaa tulipesän lämmönsiirron ja tuhkajaon ennustamista. Osittain kokeelliset karakterisointimenetelmät perustuvat kalkkikiven jauhautumiseen laboratoriokokoluokan leijutetussa kvartsiputkireaktorissa ja tuhkan jauhatumiseen rotaatiomyllyssä. Karakterisointimenetelmät ottavat huomioon eri-laiset toimintaolosuhteet kaupallisen kokoluokan kiertoleijukattiloissa. Menetelmät kelpoistettiin kaupallisen kokoluokan kiertoleijukattiloista mitattujen ja fraktioittaisella kiintoainemallilla mallinnettujen taseiden avulla. Kelpoistamistaseiden vähäisyydestä huolimatta karakterisointimenetelmät arvioitiin virhetarkastelujen perusteella järkeviksi. Karakterisointimenetelmien kehittämistä ja tarkentamista tullaan jatkamaan.

Objectives : This study compares three methods to forecast the number of acute somatic hospital beds needed in a Swiss academic hospital over the period 2010-2030. Design : Information about inpatient stays is provided through a yearly mandatory reporting of Swiss hospitals, containing anonymized data. Forecast of the numbers of beds needed compares a basic scenario relying on population projections with two other methods in use in our country that integrate additional hypotheses on future trends in admission rates and length of stay (LOS).

Despite the low biodegradability of seawater NOM, problems associated with biofouling are common in facilities that handle seawater. In this work, a fixed-film aerobic biofilter is proposed as an effective unit for preventing biofouling in such facilities. A packed-bed biofilter with an EBCT = 6 - 11 min was employed. The results demonstrated that the DOC is reduced by 6% and the BOD7 is reduced up to 15%. The LC-OCD analysis revealed that biofiltration abates the LMW neutrals and biopolymer fractions by 33 and 17%, respectively. However, the fractionation with UF membrane showed that the biofiltration process is able to degrade the more biodegradable compounds that have molecular weights that are greater than 1 kDa and compounds with molecular weights of less than 1 kDa. After biofiltration, the biological activity measured in terms of ATP removal was reduced by 60%. Finally, a test to evaluate the biofilm formation capacity of a water sample revealed reductions of ~94% when comparing biofiltered and non-biofiltered seawater. Therefore, a fixed-film aerobic biofiltration process could be a useful treatment for the removal of biodegradable organic matter from seawater and for improving the water quality in terms of less biofilm formation capacity.

Independently, both inactivity and hypoxia augment oxidative stress. This study, part of the FemHab project, investigated the combined effects of bed rest-induced unloading and hypoxic exposure on oxidative stress and antioxidant status. Healthy, eumenorrheic women were randomly assigned to the following three 10-day experimental interventions: normoxic bed rest (NBR;n= 11; PiO2 = 133 mmHg), normobaric hypoxic bed rest (HBR;n= 12; PiO2 = 90 mmHg), and ambulatory hypoxic confinement (HAMB;n= 8: PiO2 = 90 mmHg). Plasma samples, obtained before (Pre), during (D2, D6), immediately after (Post) and 24 h after (Post+1) each intervention, were analyzed for oxidative stress markers [advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitrotyrosine], antioxidant status [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and uric acid (UA)], NO metabolism end-products (NOx), and nitrites. Compared with baseline, AOPP increased in NBR and HBR on D2 (+14%; +12%;P< 0.05), D6 (+19%; +15%;P< 0.05), and Post (+22%; +21%;P< 0.05), respectively. MDA increased at Post+1 in NBR (+116%;P< 0.01) and D2 in HBR (+114%;P< 0.01) and HAMB (+95%;P< 0.05). Nitrotyrosine decreased (-45%;P< 0.05) and nitrites increased (+46%;P< 0.05) at Post+1 in HAMB only. Whereas SOD was higher at D6 (+82%) and Post+1 (+67%) in HAMB only, the catalase activity increased on D6 (128%) and Post (146%) in HBR and HAMB, respectively (P< 0.05). GPX was only reduced on D6 (-20%;P< 0.01) and Post (-18%;P< 0.05) in HBR. No differences were observed in FRAP and NOx. UA was higher at Post in HBR compared with HAMB (P< 0.05). These data indicate that exposure to combined inactivity and hypoxia impairs prooxidant/antioxidant balance in healthy women. Moreover, habitual activity levels, as opposed to inactivity, seem to blunt hypoxia-related oxidative stress via antioxidant system upregulation.
