A novel synthetic route for nearly monodispersed poly(methyl methacrylate)/SiO2 composite particles (PMSCP) is reported. Silica nanoparticles modified with oleic acid were used as 'seeds'. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer was copolymerized with oleic acid via in situ emulsion polymerization, in the presence of an initiator; it resulted finally in the formation of composites with core-shell morphology. The composite particles were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The number of silica particles inside the composite particles increases with an increase in the silica concentration. The effect of grafted silica concentration on the morphology of PMSCP is also reported in detail. It was found by thermogravimetric analysis that PMSCP show a potential application for fire retardance.

X-1-y(2)SiO(5):Eu3+ and X-1-Y2SiO5:Ce3+ and/or Tb3+ phosphor layers have been coated on nonaggregated, monodisperse, submicron spherical SiO2 particles by a sol-gel process, followed by surface reaction at high temperature (1000 degrees C), to give core/shell structured SiO2@Y2SiO5:Eu3+ and SiO2@Y2SiO5:Ce3+/Tb3+ particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), TEM, photoluminescence (PL), low voltage cathodoluminescence (CL), and time-resolved PL spectra and lifetimes are used to characterize these materials. The XRD results indicate that X-1-Y2SiO5 layers have been successfully coated on the sur- face Of SiO2 particles, as further verified by the FESEM and TEM images. The PL and CL studies suggest that SiO2@Y2SiO5:Eu3+, SiO2@Y2SiO5:Tb3+ (or Ce3+/Tb3+), and SiO2@Y2SiO5:Ce3+ core/shell particles exhibit red (Eu3+, 613 rim: D-5(0)-F-7(2)), green (Tb3+, 542nm: D-5(4)-F-7(5)), or blue (Ce3+, 450nm: 5d-4f) luminescence, respectively. Pl, excitation, emission, and time-resolved spectra demonstrate that there is an energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in the SiO2@Y2SiO5:Ce3+,Tb3+ core/shell particles.

Rhodamine B (RB)-doped organic-inorganic silica films and their patterning were fabricated by a sol-gel process combined with a soft lithography. The resulted film samples were characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), optical microscope and UV/Vis absorption and photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra. The effects of the concentration of the RB dye and heat treatment temperature on the optical properties of the hybrid silica films have been studied. Four kinds of patterning structures with film line widths of 5, 10, 20 and 50 mum have been obtained by micromolding in capillaries by a soft lithography technique. The RB-doped hybrid silica films present a red color, with an excitation and emission bands around 564 and 585 mum, respectively. With increasing the RB concentration, the emission intensity of the RB-doped hybrid silica films increases and the emission maximum presents a red shift. The emission intensity of the films decreases with increasing the heat treatment temperatures.

In this paper, silica-based transparent organic-inorganic hybrid materials were prepared via the sol-gel process. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) were used as the inorganic and organic precursors, respectively. The terbium complex, Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen (Tfacac = 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone, phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline) was successfully doped into organically modified silicate (ormosil) matrix derived from TEOS and GPTMS, and the luminescent properties of the resultant ormosil composite phosphors [ormosil/Th(Tfacac)(3)phen] were investigated compared with those of the Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen incorporated into SiO2 derived from TEOS (labeled as silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen). Both kinds of the materials show the characteristic green emission of Tb3+ ion. The luminescence behavior of the resultant composite products was dependent on the matrix composition. The optimized lanthanide complex concentration in the ormosil/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen was increased compared with in silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen. Furthermore, the lifetime of Tb3+ in Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen, silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen and ormosil/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen follows the sequence: onmosil/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen>silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen>pure Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen.

Poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA)/SiO2 hybrids with different compositions were prepared under different casting temperatures and pH values. Their morphology as investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that samples with different compositions have different morphologies. When the SiO2 content is lower, PEA is the continuous phase and SiO2 is the dispersed phase. At higher SiO2 content, the change in phase morphology takes place, nd PEA gradually dispersing in the form of latex particles in SiO2 matrix. Change in phase morphology depends mainly on the time the sol-gel transition occurs. At suitable casting temperature and pH value, PEA/SiO2 in 95/5 and 50/50 hybrids with even dispersion was obtained.

Graphite powder-supported cupric hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) nanoparticles were dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane based gels to produce a conducting carbon ceramic Composite, which was used as electrode material to fabricate surface- renewable CuHCF-modified electrodes. Electrochemical behavior of the CuHCF-modifled carbon ceramic composite electrodes was characterized using cyclic and square-wave voltammetry. Cyclic voltammograms at various scan rates indicated that peak currents were surface-confined at low scan rates. In the presence of glutathione, a clear electrocatalytic response was observed at the CuHCF-modified composite electrodes. In addition, the electrodes exhibited a distinct advantage of reproducible surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing on emery paper, as well as ease of preparation, and good chemical and mechanical stability in a flowing stream.

The different poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) /SiO2 hybrids were prepared through sol-gel method involving PMMA emulsion (emulsion method) and PMMA/THF solution (solution method). The samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that PMMA/SiO2 composites in nanoscale were prepared by emulsion method, and its size of phase heterogeneity was less than that of solution method. Meanwhile, the polymer emulsion as the reactive medium was more suitable for the formation of SiO2 network.

A surface-renewable tris (1,10-phenanthroline-5, 6-dione) iron (II) hexafluorophosphate (FePD) modified carbon ceramic electrode was constructed by dispersing FePD and graphite powder in methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) based gels. The FePD-modified electrode presented pH dependent voltammetric behavior, and its peak currents were diffusion-controlled in 0.1 mol/L Na2SO4 + H2SO4 solution (pH = 0. 4). In the, presence of iodate, clear electrocatalytic reduction waves were observed and thus the chemically modified electrode was used as an amperometric sensor for iodate in common salt. The linear range, sensitivity, detection limit and response time of the iodate sensor were 5 x 10(-6)-1 x 10(-2) mol/L, 7.448 muA.L/mmol, 1.2 x 10(-6) mol/L and 5 s, respectively. A distinct advantage of this sensor is its good reproducibility of surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing.

In this article, we report on an approach of using an emulsion polymerized polymer in preparing organic-inorganic nanocomposites through a sol-gel technique. By mixing a polymer emulsion with prehydrolyzed tetraethoxysilane transparent poly(butyl methacrylate)/SiO2, nanocomposites were prepared as shown by TEM. AFM, FTIR, and XPS results show that there is a strong interaction between polymer latex particles and the SiO2 network. Comparison of the emulsion method with a traditional solution method shows that nanocomposites can be prepared by both methods, but there is some difference in their morphology and properties.

An amperometric tyrosinase enzyme electrode for the determination of phenols was developed by a simple and effective immobilization method using sol-gel techniques. A grafting copolymer was introduced into sol-gel solution and the composition of the resultant organic-inorganic composite material was optimized, the tyrosinase retained its activity in the sol-gel thin film and its response to several phenol compounds was determined at 0 mV vs. Ag/AgCl (sat. KCI). The dependences of the current response on pH, oxygen level and temperature were studied, and the stability of the biosensor was also evaluated. The sensitivity of the biosensor for catechol, phenol and p-cresol was 59.6, 23.1 and 39.4 muA/mM, respectively. The enzyme electrode maintained 73% of its original activity after intermittent use for three weeks when storing in a dry state at 4 degreesC. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Novel ceramic-carbon electrodes (CCEs) containing 1:12-phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) were constructed by homogeneously dispersing PMo12 and graphite powder into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gel. Peak currents for the PMo12-doped CCE were surface-controlled at lower scan rates but diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates and peak potentials shifted to the negative potential direction with increasing pH. In addition, the electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The PMo12-modified CCE presented good chemical and mechanical stability and good surface renewability (ten successive polishing resulted in less than 5% relative standard deviation). Silica xerogels prepared by sol-gel method show blue emission under UV excitation with a smaller Stokes shift. The luminescent properties have been investigated under various preparation conditions and compositions. The silica xerogels show similar luminescent properties when using C2H5OH and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvents, which are very different from those when using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent, i.e., a red shift of excitation and emission has been observed in the latter case. The emission intensity of the silica xerogels also depends on the water content and pH of the starting reaction solution. The introduction of organic group (-CH3) in the silica xerogel modifies the network structure and further changes their luminescence properties. Heat treatment results in the decomposition of the organic (-SiCH3) groups, which eliminates the old luminescent centers and produces new luminescent centers in longer wavelength simultaneously. Terbium complexes with benzoic acid and its derivatives o-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were in situ synthesized in sol-gel derived silica matrix via a two-step sol-gel process. The formation process of the complex was characterized by fluorescence spectra, absorption spectra and IR spectra. The gels that contain in situ synthesized complexes exhibit the characteristic emission bands of terbium ion. The fluorescence lifetimes of Tb3+ in the silica gels are longer than those in the pure complexes and in the solutions that contain the corresponding complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
