Hoitotyön koulutukseen pyritään valitsemaan alalle soveltuvia, motivoituneita sekä teoreettisissa ja kliinisissä opinnoissa menestyviä opiskelijoita. Tämän seurantatutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli vertailla soveltuvuuskokeella ja kirjallisella kokeella valittujen hoitotyön opiskelijoiden osaamista ja opiskelumotivaatiota. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tehdä tutkimustulosten perusteella hoitotyön koulutuksen opiskelijavalintoihin liittyviä kehittämisehdotuksia. Tutkimuksen kohderyhmänä olivat yhteen ammattikorkeakouluun syksyn 2002 ja syksyn 2004 välisenä aikana hoitotyön koulutukseen kahdella eri valintakoemenetelmällä valitut hoitotyön opiskelijat (N=626) (sairaanhoitotyö, terveydenhoitotyö, kätilötyö). Opiskelijaryhmistä muodostettiin kaksi kohorttia valintakoemenetelmän perusteella: soveltuvuuskoe (VAL1, N=368) ja kirjallinen koe (VAL2, N=258). Seurantatutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin opiskelijoiden opintorekisteristä sekä kahdella strukturoidulla mittarilla, joilla kartoitettiin hoitotyön opiskelijoiden itsearvioitua hoitotyön osaamista (OSAA-mittari) ja opiskelumotivaatiota (MOTI-mittari). Seurantatutkimuksen aineistonkeruu ajoittui opiskelijoiden kolmannelle lukukaudella (1. mittaus, 2004‒2006, VAL1 n=234, VAL2 n=126) ja valmistumisvaiheeseen (2. mittaus, 2006‒2009, VAL1 n=149, VAL2 n=108). Ensimmäisen mittauksen vastausprosentti oli 75,0 % ja toisen mittauksen 92,4 %. Aineistojen analysoinnissa käytettiin pitkittäistutkimukseen soveltuvia monimuuttujamenetelmiä. Kahdella valintakoemenetelmällä valikoitui pienistä eroista huolimatta osaamiseltaan ja opiskelumotivaatioltaan hyvin samanlaisia opiskelijoita. Soveltuvuuskokeella valitut opiskelijat kokivat ryhmän kannustavuuden vahvemmaksi valmistumisvaiheessa kuin kirjallisella kokeella valitut. Kirjallisella kokeella valittujen opiskelijoiden kolmannen lukukauden arvosanoihin perustuva osaaminen oli parempaa kuin soveltuvuuskokeella valittujen opiskelijoiden. Suuntautumisvaihtoehto, hoitoalan työkokemus, peruskoulutus ja hakusija olivat merkittävimmin yhteydessä opiskelijoiden osaamiseen ja opiskelumotivaatioon. Valintakoemenetelmä selitti eniten opiskelijoiden osaamisessa ja opiskelumotivaatiossa ilmenneitä eroja, joskin selitysosuudet jäivät alhaisiksi. Kehittämisehdotukset kohdistuvat valintakoemenetelmien kehittämiseen ja säännölliseen arviointiin sekä alalle motivoituneisuuden määrittelyyn ja mittaamisen kehittämiseen. Jatkotutkimusaiheina ehdotetaan eri valintakoemenetelmien testaamista ja tutkimuksessa käytettyjen mittareiden edelleen kehittämistä.

CD95 (Fas/APO-1)-mediated apoptosis plays an important role in immunological regulation and is related to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. Immunoexpression of CD95 has been reported to frequently occur in low grade non-Hodgkin lymphomas, especially of post-germinal center histogenesis, among which those originating in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphomas). However, there is no report comparing in situ immunoexpression of this marker in lymphomas and the hyperplastic lymphoid reaction (chronic gastritis) related to Helicobacter pylori infection. The purpose of the present research was to compare the intensity of lymphoid CD95 immunoexpression in 15 cases of H. pylori-related chronic gastritis and 15 gastric MALT lymphomas. CD95 (anti-CD95) was detected by an immunoperoxidase technique in paraffin sections using the catalyzed amplification system. Graduation of reaction intensity (percentage of CD95-positive cells) was semiquantitative, from 1+ to 4+. Nine cases of chronic gastritis were 4+, five 2+ and one 1+. Three lymphomas were 4+, three 3+, four 2+, four 1+, and one was negative. Although 14 of 15 lymphomas were positive for CD95, the intensity of the reaction was significantly weaker compared to that obtained with gastric tissue for patients with gastritis (P = 0.03). The difference in CD95 immunoexpression does not seem to be useful as an isolated criterion in the differential diagnosis between chronic gastritis and MALT lymphomas since there was overlapping of immunostaining patterns. However, it suggests the possibility of a pathogenetic role of this apoptosis-regulating protein in MALT lymphomas.

Universities around the world are facing global competition and challenges to finance their main functions - research and education. This study focused on the role of graduates, alumni, in the success of a university. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of brand identification in alumni willingness to support their alma mater. The research concentrated on finding out what is the relationship between brand identification and it’s antecedents (prestige, satisfaction, interpretation of brand) to alumni willingness to promote university, participate in university activities and support financially by donating money to university’s research. The research method was quantitative and the data was collected via online survey from 569 alumni of a Finnish university. The findings suggest that there is a strong relationship between brand identification and alumni support. The stronger brand identification is, the more willing alumni were to promote university, participate in university activities and support financially. Based on the research, it is beneficial for universities to invest in brand development in order to get alumni to act as ambassadors of the university after their graduation.

Memories of historical injustices affect contemporary politics from local to global level. In East Asia, questions of commemoration and historical responsibility have turned into international and domestic controversies. The main focus has been and still is in apologies conducted by Japanese prime ministers in regards to the war, aggression and colonialism during the era of Imperial Japan. Although it is granted that state apologies are not a crucial part of reconciliation, they can be analysed as a linked but separate process within the context of memory and international relations. The purpose of this study is to examine the discourses of history in Japanese prime ministers’ commemoration speeches on Memorial Ceremony for the War Dead from 1995 to 2015 in order to analyse how the Japanese government is reflecting on its past. In particular, attention is paid on what is being commemorated and how, whether it is the war and its victims or Japan’s post-war era of peace. As an apology is a reciprocal activity, responses from Japan’s most vocal former victims, South Korea and China, were also examined. Discourse analysis was used to identify and examine the different representations of the past. In addition, the apology statements of Japanese prime ministers were analysed in the Many to Many apology framework developed by Tavuchis (1991). Primary material consisted of 21 prime ministers’ speeches from the annual Memorial Ceremony for the War Dead on August 15th and from three apology statements made in 1995, 2005 and 2015. Further international context was primarily collected from newspaper articles of The New York Times and The Times throughout the examined period. It can be concluded from the findings that in the official Japanese remembrance of the past war from 1985’s annexation of Taiwan to the atomic bombings in 1945, both discourses that reinforce apology and remorse over Japan’s past aggressions and discourses that consciously avoid doing so are used. The commemoration speeches and apology statements consistently assert that Japan has acknowledged its past and expresses regret over the acts of aggression. At the same time, the speeches and statements strengthen the narrative that Japan was a victim of circumstances as well as turn the focus on post-war peace-making or on Japan’s own victimhood.

The purpose of this study was to explore the employer brand image and its formation of a Finnish (yet international) service company in B2B sector. In the research qualitative case study method was used to explore the most preferred attributes in employer attraction, the employer brand perceptions towards the case company, and the effectors behind these brand perceptions among the prospective group of employees. The research was conducted through in-depth semistructured interviews among 23-30 undergraduate or graduate business students in Finnish universities close to their graduation. After deriving the attributes of an attractive employer, and exploring their relation to the case company, the employer brand image of the case company was determined and its attractiveness level evaluated. Moreover, the formation of the employer brand image was investigated and its sources detected. The most important factors for the target group in employer attractiveness were found to be company reputation and company culture/work atmosphere. Also career opportunities and international opportunities were seen important. The case company was found to hold a positive, attractive image on company culture and international opportunities, but failing to hold a good reputation as a fair employer. The main and most impactful source of employer brand image was former and current employees - directly or indirectly. Company’s own actions played only small part in employer brand formation as credibility is a critical factor in brand image formation and corporate communication found not to be perceived genuine. Based on the findings, suggestions for further employer branding were made.

Rather then cutting a piece of red tape with scissors, the Science students at Brock prepared a laser devise to cut through a specially made piece of metallic ribbon for the opening ceremony of the Science Complex addition. Pictured here is Robert Welch with the laser device as he attempts to 'cut' the tape. Unfortunately the device failed and Dr. Earp resorted to cutting the tape with a Swiss Army knife he had on hand.
