Choosing best components for an amputee: a methodology for the best decision-making

The harmony between the stump and the prosthesis is critical to allow it to fulfill its function enabling an efficient gait. A well fitted socket, with an efficient and comfortable suspension, allows the amputee to continue their daily living activities, maintaining the stump functional, making this correlation between socket and suspension very important in the functionality of the prosthesis, mobility and overall satisfaction with the device. Of our knowledge, the quantitative correlation between all of these factors as not yet been assessed. Aim of study: Verify and confirm the process of decision-making for four different trans-tibial prostheses with suspension systems: Hypobaric(A), PIN(B), Classic Suction(C) and Vacuum Active –VASS(D) according data provided by gait efficiency (mlO2/kg/m) imagiology (pistonning) and amputee perception.

Decision-making on childhood vaccination by highly educated parents

OBJECTIVE To analyze the sociocultural aspects involved in the decision-making process of vaccination in upper-class and highly educated families.METHODS A qualitative approach based on in-depth interviews with 15 couples from the city of Sao Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, falling into three categories: vaccinators, late or selective vaccinators, and nonvaccinators. The interpretation of produced empirical material was performed through content analysis.RESULTS The study showed diverse and particular aspects surrounding the three groups’ decisions whether to vaccinate their children. The vaccinators’ decision to vaccinate their children was spontaneous and raised no questions. Most late or selective vaccinators experienced a wide range of situations that were instrumental in the decision to delay or not apply certain vaccines. The nonvaccinator’s decision-making process expressed a broader context of both criticism of hegemonic obstetric practices in Brazil and access to information transmitted via social networks and the internet. The data showed that the problematization of vaccines (culminating in the decision to not vaccinate their children) occurred in the context of humanized birth, was protagonized by women and was greatly influenced by health information from the internet.CONCLUSIONS Sociocultural aspects of the singular Brazilian context and the contemporary society were involved in the decision-making on children’s vaccination. Understanding this process can provide a real basis for a deeper reflection on health and immunization practices in Brazil in light of the new contexts and challenges of the world today.

Análise estocástica com recurso a ferramentas informáticas no planeamento de empreitadas de construção

O presente trabalho, desenvolvido sob a orientação do Prof. Jaime Gabriel Silva, centra-se na procura e aplicação de metodologias de planeamento com apoio de ferramentas informáticas de análise de risco, que permitem realizar, em tempo útil, o cálculo dos prazos resultantes de inúmeras combinações possíveis associadas à incerteza das durações das atividades, recorrendo a modelos estocásticos. O trabalho aborda inicialmente o contexto da Gestão na Construção, com particular enfase na Gestão do Risco. Nessa fase inicial, fez-se também um pequeno inquérito a profissionais com diferentes níveis de responsabilidade organizacional e empresas do setor. A parte fundamental do trabalho, incide nos procedimentos a adotar na elaboração do planeamento de empreitadas. Nesta parte do trabalho, introduzem-se os conceitos da análise de risco com recurso a uma ferramenta informática de apoio, o @Risk, que permite a utilização do Método de Monte Carlo, para obtenção de resultados num contexto de uma tomada de decisão baseada no risco. Refira-se que houve vários contactos com o fornecedor do programa, que permitiram tirar partido de outro programa da Palisade, Evolver, direcionado para otimização matemática, podendo ser utilizado, por exemplo, na perspetiva da minimização dos custos, o que pode interessar pela relação destes com as opções adotadas na elaboração do planeamento de empreendimentos. Finalmente, toma-se um exemplo real do planeamento de uma empreitada em execução à data da realização deste trabalho, onde se aplicaram os conceitos desenvolvidos no trabalho, confrontando os resultados com o andamento da obra.

Making programming exercises interoperable with PExIL

Several standards have appeared in recent years to formalize the metadata of learning objects, but they are still insufficient to fully describe a specialized domain. In particular, the programming exercise domain requires interdependent resources (e.g. test cases, solution programs, exercise description) usually processed by different services in the programming exercise lifecycle. Moreover, the manual creation of these resources is time-consuming and error-prone, leading to an obstacle to the fast development of programming exercises of good quality. This chapter focuses on the definition of an XML dialect called PExIL (Programming Exercises Interoperability Language). The aim of PExIL is to consolidate all the data required in the programming exercise lifecycle from when it is created to when it is graded, covering also the resolution, the evaluation, and the feedback. The authors introduce the XML Schema used to formalize the relevant data of the programming exercise lifecycle. The validation of this approach is made through the evaluation of the usefulness and expressiveness of the PExIL definition. In the former, the authors present the tools that consume the PExIL definition to automatically generate the specialized resources. In the latter, they use the PExIL definition to capture all the constraints of a set of programming exercises stored in a learning objects repository.
