Entre 1956 y 1961 Severo Sarduy publicó una importante cantidad de textos sobre literatura, plástica y teatro cubano en el Diario Libre, Lunes de Revolución, Nueva Revista Cubana, Mañana libre y Combate 13 de Marzo. Participó de la explosión que caracterizó a la prensa literaria cubana a partir de la Revolución y se inscribió en las filas de los intelectuales que trabajaron en favor de ella. Entregado a sus labores de periodista plástico, un muy joven Sarduy entrevista al famoso pintor Mariano Rodríguez (1912-1990), co-fundador junto al escultor Alfredo Lozano (1913-1997) y a los escritores José Lezama Lima (1910-1976) y José Rodríguez Feo (1920-1993) de la revista Orígenes. Esta entrevista fue publicada en La Habana el 12 de octubre de 1959 y en ella se exponen juicios estéticos y políticos sobre el régimen de visibilidad cultural del arte cubano en el nuevo orden social. Cabe destacar que, a pesar de la ruptura que se produjo entre los editores de Orígenes, Mariano Rodríguez se convirtió en el creador del "Eolo" que sirvió de ícono a la postrera revista Ciclón (1955). Por lo tanto, presentamos un recorrido por dicha entrevista profundizando el breve pero significativo vínculo-desencuentro sucedido entre ambos

The study was inspired by information on Paleozoic andesites, dacites, and diabases on the Belkovsky Island in the 1974 geological survey reports used to reconstruct tectonic evolution of the continental block comprising the New Siberian Islands and the bordering shelf. We did not find felsic volcanics or Middle Paleozoic intrusions in the studied area of the island. Igneous rocks are mafic subvolcanic intrusions including dikes, randomly shaped bodies, explosion breccias, and peperites. They belong to the tholeiitic series and are similar to Siberian traps in petrography and trace-element compositions, with high LREE and LILE and prominent Nb negative anomalies. The island arc affinity is due to continental crust contamination of mantle magma and its long evolution in chambers at different depths. K-Ar biotite age (252+/-5 Ma) of magmatism indicates that it was coeval to the main stage of trap magmatism in the Siberian craton at the Permian-Triassic boundary. The terrane including the New Siberian Islands occurred on the periphery of the Siberian trap province where magmatism acted in rifting environment. Magma intruded into semiliquid wet sediments at shallow depths shortly after their deposition. Therefore, the exposed Paleozoic section in Belkovsky Island may include Permian or possibly Lower Triassic sediments of younger ages than it was believed earlier.

Subduction related mafic/ultramafic complexes marking the suture between the Wilson Terrane and the Bowers Terrane in northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) are well-suited for evaluating the magmatic and structural evolu- tion at the Palaeo-Pacific continental margin of Gondwana. One of these intru- sions is the "Tiger Gabbro Complex" (TGC), which is located at the southern end of the island-arc type Bowers Terrane. The TGC is an early Palaeozoic island-arc related layered igneous complex characterized by extraordinarly fresh sequences of ultramafic, mafic and evolved lithologies and extensive development of high-temperature high-strain zones. The goal of the present study is to establish the kinematic, petrogenetic and temporal development of the TGC in order to evaluate the magmatic and structural evolution of the deep crustal roots of this Cambrian-aged island-arc. Fieldwork during GANOVEX X was carried out to provide insight into: (i) the spatial relations between the different igneous lithologies of the TGC, (ii) the nature of the contact between the TGC and Bowers Terrane, and (iii) the high-temperature shear zones exposed in parts of the TGC. Here, we report the results of detailed field and petrological observations combined with new geochronological data. Based on these new data, we tentatively propose a petrogenetic-kinematic model for the TGC, which involves a two-phase evolution during the Ross orogeny. These phases can be summarized as: (i) an early phase (maximum age c. 530 Ma) involving tectono-magmatic processes that were active at the deep crustal level represented by the TGC within the Bowers island arc and within a general NE-SW directed contractional regime and (ii) a late phase (maximum age c. 490 Ma) attributed to the late Ross orogenic intrusion of the TGC into the higher-crustal metasedimentary country rocks of the Bowers Terrane under NE-SW directed horizontal maximum stress and subsequent cooling.

The geological map shows the northeastern part of the polyphase deformed Sivorg Terrane in the Heimefrontfjella/Dronning Maud Land. The basement was affected by late Mesoproterozoic and Cambrian deformation and metamorphism. Geological mapping was carried out during the Antarctic Expedition 2000/01 of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. Topographic data were obtained through stereoscopic aerial photo interpretation. The photogrammetric photo flights were undertaken in 1986 by the Institut für Angewandte Geodäsie, Frankfurt/M. Horizontal ground control points required for aerial photo interpretation were determined by means of Doppler satellite observation during the 2nd German Neuschwabenland Expedition 1985/86. Vertical ground control points were taken from unpublished map drafts at 1:100 000 scale by Norsk Polarinstitutt, Oslo. The elevation above mean sea level was transferred to Heimefrontfjella barometrically. For this reason assertions concerning the absolute elevation (referred to sea level) are uncertain. Contours and spot heights presented on the map were obtained from the photogrammetric evaluation of the photography taken in 1986; relative elevation data (height differences) are accurate to approximately ±10 m. Two silicate-rich dust layers were found in the Dome Fuji ice core in East Antarctica, at Marine Isotope Stages 12 and 13. Morphologies, textures, and chemical compositions of constituent particles reveal that they are high-temperature melting products and are of extraterrestrial origin. Because similar layers were found ~2000 km east of Dome Fuji, at EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica)-Dome C, particles must have rained down over a wide area 434 and 481 ka. The strewn fields occurred over an area of at least 3 × 10**6 km**2. Chemical compositions of constituent phases and oxygen isotopic composition of olivines suggest that the upper dust layer was produced by a high-temperature interaction between silicate-rich melt and water vapor due to an impact explosion or an aerial burst of a chondritic meteoroid on the inland East Antarctic ice sheet. An estimated total mass of the impactor, on the basis of particle flux and distribution area, is at least 3 × 10**9 kg. A possible parent material of the lower dust layer is a fragment of friable primitive asteroid or comet. A hypervelocity impact of asteroidal/cometary material on the upper atmosphere and an explosion might have produced aggregates of sub-µm to µm-sized spherules. Total mass of the parent material of the lower layer must exceed 1 × 10**9 kg. The two extraterrestrial horizons, each a few millimeters in thickness, represent regional or global meteoritic events not identified previously in the Southern Hemisphere.

Long-term evolution is thought to take opportunities that arise as a consequence of mass extinction (as argued, for example, by Gould, 2002) and the following biotic recovery, but there is absolutely no evidence for this being the case. However, our study shows that eutrophication by oceanic mixing also played a part in the enhancement of several evolutionary events amongst marine organisms, and these results could indicate that the rates of oceanic biodiversification may be slowed if upwelling becomes weakened by future global warming. This paper defines three distinct evolutionary events of resting spores of the marine diatom genus Chaetoceros, to reconstruct past upwelling through the analysis of several DSDP, ODP and land-based successions from the North, South and equatorial Pacific as well as the Atlantic Ocean during the past 40 million years. The Atlantic Chaetoceros Explosion (ACE) event occurred across the E/O boundary in the North Atlantic, and is characterized by resting spore diversification that occurred as a consequence of the onset of upwelling following changes in thermohaline circulation through global cooling in the early Oligocene. Pacific Chaetoceros Explosion events-1 and -2 (PACE-1 and PACE-2) are characterized by relatively higher occurrences of iron input following the Himalayan uplift and aridification at 8.5 Ma and ca. 2.5 Ma in the North Pacific region. These events not only enhanced the diversification and increased abundance of primary producers, including that of Chaetoceros, other diatoms and seaweeds, but also stimulated the evolution of zooplankton and larger predators, such as copepods and marine mammals, which ate these phytoplankton and plants. Current thinking suggests new evolutionary niches open up after a mass extinction, but our study finds that eutrophication can also stimulate evolutionary diversification. Moreover, in the opposite fashion, our results show that as thermohaline circulation abates, global warming progresses and the ocean surface becomes warmer, many marine organisms will be affected by the environmental degradation.

In central Antarctica, drainage today and earlier back to the Paleozoic radiates from the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (GSM). Proximal to the GSM past the Permian-Triassic fluvial sandstones in the Prince Charles Mountains (PCM) are Cretaceous, Eocene, and Pleistocene sediment in Prydz Bay (ODP741, 1166, and 1167) and pre-Holocene sediment in AM04 beneath the Amery Ice Shelf. We analysed detrital zircons for U-Pb ages, Hf-isotope compositions, and trace elements to determine the age, rock type, source of the host magma, and "crustal" model age (T(C)DM). These samples, together with others downslope from the GSM and the Vostok Subglacial Highlands (VSH), define major clusters of detrital zircons interpreted as coming from (1) 700 to 460 Ma mafic granitoids and alkaline rock, epsilon-Hf 9 to -28, signifying derivation 2.5 to 1.3 Ga from fertile and recycled crust, and (2) 1200-900 Ma mafic granitoids and alkaline rock, epsilon-Hf 11 to -28, signifying derivation 1.8 to 1.3 Ga from fertile and recycled crust. Minor clusters extend to 3350 Ma. Similar detrital zircons in Permian-Triassic, Ordovician, Cambrian, and Neoproterozoic sandstones located along the PaleoPacific margin of East Antarctica and southeast Australia further downslope from central Antarctica reflect the upslope GSM-VSH nucleus of the central Antarctic provenance as a complex of 1200-900 Ma (Grenville) mafic granitoids and alkaline rocks and older rocks embedded in 700-460 Ma (Pan-Gondwanaland) fold belts. The wider central Antarctic provenance (CAP) is tentatively divided into a central sector with negative ?Hf in its 1200-900 Ma rocks bounded on either side by positive epsilon-Hf. The high ground of the GSM-VSH in the Permian and later to the present day is attributed to crustal shortening by far-field stress during the 320 Ma mid-Carboniferous collision of Gondwanaland and Laurussia. Earlier uplifts in the ~500 Ma Cambrian possibly followed the 700-500 Ma assembly of Gondwanaland, and in the Neoproterozoic the 1000-900 Ma collisional events in the Eastern Ghats-Rayner Province at the end of the 1300-1000 Ma assembly of Rodinia.

Extensive high-grade polydeformed metamorphic provinces surrounding Archaean cratonic nuclei in the East Antarctic Shield record two tectono-thermal episodes in late Mesoproterozoic and late Neoproterozoic-Cambrian times. In Western Dronning Maud Land, the high-grade Mesoproterozoic Maud Belt is juxtaposed against the Archaean Grunehogna Province and has traditionally been interpreted as a Grenvillian mobile belt that was thermally overprinted during the Early Palaeozoic. Integration of new U-Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe and conventional single zircon and monazite age data, and Ar-Ar data on hornblende and biotite, with thermobarometric calculations on rocks from the H.U. Sverdrupfjella, northern Maud Belt, resulted in a more complex P-T-t evolution than previously assumed. A c. 540?Ma monazite, hosted by an upper ampibolite-facies mineral assemblage defining a regionally dominant top-to-NW shear fabric, provides strong evidence for the penetrative deformation in the area being of Pan-African age and not of Grenvillian age as previously reported. Relics of an eclogite-facies garnet-omphacite assemblage within strain-protected mafic boudins indicate that the peak metamorphic conditions recorded by most rocks in the area (T = 687-758°C, P = 9·4-11·3?kbar) were attained subsequent to decompression from P > 12·9?kbar. By analogy with limited U-Pb single zircon age data and on circumstantial textural grounds, this earlier eclogite-facies metamorphism is ascribed to subduction and accretion around 565?Ma. Post-peak metamorphic K-metasomatism under amphibolite-facies conditions is ascribed to the intrusion of post-orogenic granite at c. 480?Ma. The recognition of extensive Pan-African tectonism in the Maud Belt casts doubts on previous Rodinia reconstructions, in which this belt takes a pivotal position between East Antarctica, the Kalahari Craton and Laurentia. Evidence of late Mesoproterozoic high-grade metamorphism during the formation of the Maud Belt exists in the form of c. 1035?Ma zircon overgrowths that are probably related to relics of granulite-facies metamorphism recorded from other parts of the Maud Belt. The polymetamorphic rocks are largely derived from a c. 1140?Ma volcanic arc and 1072 ± 10?Ma granite.
