As these results indicate, photo-CVD coating is a robust process that allows for the creation of core-shell nanoparticles. In the present work we demonstrated that photo-CVD can effectively coat Fe2O3 particles with silica for purposes of biological applications. TDMA results combined with TEM images indicate that all particles are effectively coated and that particle coating thicknesses can be tuned to desired thickness depending on the application. In addition, the ability to vary coating properties and to coat high concentrations of particles makes this technique of interest for industrial production where uniform properties are needed for large quantities of particles [2]. A new method is demonstrated to be effective in reducing mismatch-induced tensile stress and suppressing the formation of cracks by inserting InAlGaN interlayers during the growth of GaN upon Si (1 1 1) substrate. Compared with GaN film without quaternary interlayer, GaN layer grown on InAlGaN compliant layers shows a five times brighter integrated PL intensity and a (0 0 0 2) High-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) curve width of 18 arcmin. Its chi(min), derived from Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), is about 2.0%, which means that the crystalline quality of this layer is very good. Quaternary InAlGaN layers, which are used as buffer layers firstly, can play a compliant role to endure the large mismatch-induced stress and reduce cracks during the growth of GaN epitaxy. The mechanisms leading to crack density reduction are investigated and results show that the phase immiscibility and the weak In-N bond make interlayer to offer tenability in the lattice parameters and release the thermal stress. MnSb/porous silicon hybrid structure was prepared by physical vapor deposition technique. The structure and surface morphology of the MnSb films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, respectively. The magnetic hysteresis loops were obtained by an alternative gradient magnetometer. Based on the measurements, only MnSb phase was found and the surface morphology was rough and island-like. MnSb thin films show ferromagnetism at room temperature. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

GaN1-xPx ternary alloys with high P compositions were deposited on sapphire substrates by means of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Depth profiles of the elements indicate that the maximum P/N composition ratio is about 17% and a uniform distribution of the P atoms in the alloys is achieved. 2theta/omega XRD spectra demonstrate that the (0002) peak of the GaN1-xPx alloys shifts to smaller angle with increasing P composition. From the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, the red shifts to the bandedge emission of GaN are determined to be 73, 78, 100 and 87 meV for the GaN1-xPx alloys with the P/N composition ratios of 3%, 11%, 15% and 17%, respectively. No PL peak related to GaP is observed, indicating that the phase separation between GaN and GaP is well suppressed in our GaN1-xPx samples. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The GaNAs alloys have been grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using dimethylhydrazine (DMHv) as the nitrogen precursor, triethylgallium (TEGa) and trimethylgallium (TMGa) as the gallium precursors, respectively. Both symmetric (004) and asymmetric (1 1 5) high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) were used to determine the nitrogen content in GaNAs layers. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) was used to obtain the impurity content. T e influence of different Ga precursors on GaNAs quality has been investigated. Phase separation is observed in the < 1 1 5 > direction when using TMGa as the Ga precursor but not observed when using TEGa. This phenomenon should originate from the parasitic reaction between the Ga and N precursors. Furthermore. samples grown with TEGa have better quality and less impurity contamination than those with TMGa. Nitrogen content of 5.742% has been achieved using TEGa and no phase separation observed in the sample. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The annealing behavior of the hexagonal phase content in cubic GaN (c-GaN) thin films grown on GaAs (001) by MOCVD is reported. C-GaN thin films are grown on GaAs (001) substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). High temperature annealing is employed to treat the as-grown c-GaN thin films. The characterization of the c-GaN films is investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The change conditions of the hexagonal phase content in the metastable c-GaN are reported. There is a boundary layer existing in the c-GaN/GaAs film. When being annealed at high temperature, the intensity of the TOB and LOB phonon modes from the boundary layer weakens while that of the E-2 phonon mode from the hexagonal phase increases. The content change of hexagonal phase has closer relationship with annealing temperature than with annealing time period.

The feasibility of growing device-quality cubic GaN/GaAs(001) films by metal organic chemical vapor deposition has been demonstrated. The optical quality of the GaN films was characterized by room-temperature photoluminescence measurements, which shows a full width at half maximum of 46 meV. The structural quality of the films was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. There are submicron-size grains free from threading dislocations and stacking faults. More importantly, a cubic-phase GaN blue light-emitting diode has been fabricated. The device process, which is very simple and compatible with current GaAs technology, indicates a promising future for the blue light-emitting diode. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. The structural characteristics of gallium nitride (GaN) films grown on sapphire(0001) substrates by gas source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE) have been investigated using high-resolution synchrotron irradiation X-ray diffraction and cathodoluminescence with a variable energy electron beam. Besides the well-known GaN hexagonal structure, a small portion of cubic phase GaN was observed. The X-ray measurements provide an essential means for the structural identification of the GaN layers. Arising from the variable penetration depth of the electron beam in the cathodoluminescence measurements, it was found that the fraction of the GaN cubic-phase typically increased as the probing depth was increased. The results suggest that the GaN cubic phase is mostly located near the interface between the substrate and GaN layer due to the initial nucleation.

A numerical model that combines mass transport and surface kinetics was applied, for the first time, to the chemical vapor epitaxy of GexSi1-x. The temperature, velocity and concentration fields were calculated from the conservation equations for energy, momentum and species coupled with the boundary conditions on the growth surface which were determined by surface kinetics. The deposition rates of Si and Ge were assumed to be limited, respectively, by surface kinetics and mass transport. A theoretical relation between the initial conditions and the Ge composition in the solid was established. The calculated growth rate as well as the Ge composition in the solid and its dependence on growth temperature agree well with experimental data.

We systematically investigated the weak epitaxy growth (WEG) behavior of a series of planar phthalocyanine compounds (MPc), i.e., metal-free phthalocyanine (H2PC), nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc), copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc), iron phthalocyanine (FePc); cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), grown on a p-sexiphenyl (p-6P) monolayer film by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Two types of epitaxial relations, named as incommensurate epitaxy and commensurate epitaxy, were identified between phthalocyanine compounds and the substrate of the p-6P film.

Isotactic polypropylene in its a modification (alpha iPP) crystallises epitaxially on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and several hemiacids or salts of substituted benzoic acids via a novel contact plane, namely (110): so far, the only known contact plane involved in alpha iPP homo- and hetero-epitaxies was (010). In spite of its complicated architecture (alternation of antichiral helices with different azimuthal settings), the (110)(alpha iPP) contact plane displays well defined, if not prominent, rows of methyl side chains parallel to the crystallographic (112) direction (at 57 degrees to the c-axis) and approximate to 5.5 Angstrom apart. The matching contact planes of the substrates display linear gratings made of rows of e.g. chlorine atoms or PTFE chains with similar approximate to 5.5 Angstrom inter-row or interchain distances. Various morphologies are observed in iPP thin films crystallised at different cooling rates in the presence of PTFE; they can be analysed in terms of a succession and interplay of successive epitaxies: initial alpha iPP/PTFE heteroepitaxy, followed by alpha iPP/alpha iPP and gamma iPP/alpha iPP homoepitaxies. The contour lithography method [1] is used to improve the fabrication yield of previously demonstrated [2] microfluidic Fabry-Perot (FP) refractive index (RI) sensors. The sensors are then coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based polymers to detect vapor analytes by solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Preliminary characterization of devices coated with two different polymers and exposed to xylenes vapors yields a maximum sensitivity of 0.015 nm/ppm and a detection limit below 120 ppm.
